Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the ROG Zephyrus 14" gaming laptop's impressive performance, long battery life, and portable design. Many appreciate its lightweight nature and the vibrant display, although some users note that the device can get warm under heavy use and that the fan can be noisy at times. The lack of a built-in webcam and limited storage are also frequently cited drawbacks. Overall, the laptop receives positive feedback for its combination of power and portability, despite some minor issues.

The best budget gaming laptop on the market

I moved from an Alienware laptop and CyberPowerPC Desktop with the 3060 in it to this laptop and I have been so pleasantly surprised by the way that this laptop performs. For such a small laptop you really are getting a fantastic amount of performance, the Ryzen processor included in this model also just sips power throughout the day on battery life (as long as you make sure to put it in eco mode disabling the 3060). A lot of laptop manufacturers will claim that their powerful gaming/"creator" laptops will have "all day battery life" and this is true if your day is 2 hours long. (Looking at you, Alienware) but I have pushed my Zephyrus G14 to the limits running VMWare Workstation Pro, various Microsoft applications, streaming spotify and doing other day-to-day tasks on battery and have seen upwards of 8-10 hours on the battery, truly amazing. When you use the display on the laptop the 144hz display feels crisp and responsive, not as responsive as the higher end gaming displays, but if you're using the display to try to compete with opponents in tactical shooters such as Counter-Strike or VALORANT you may notice you're being seen before you see them. However, you can use the Type C to DisplayPort adapter available at Best Buy and hook up an external display with all your desktop peripherals and you may be shocked at how impressive this laptop is. I have consistently chugged out 240FPS+ in WarZone on a 1080P samsung monitor with ease. For thermals, there's not too much to say, it's still a very powerful laptop so heat is GOING to be generated, it's not nearly as bad as the Razer laptops or Alienware laptops, but there is definitely heat. The way the heat is dissipated does keep your hands pretty comfortable, the trade off is that the heat blows directly onto the panel, I haven't had any issues with this but the laptop spends the majority of its time on the stand so the heat shoots off the back not onto the display. The keyboard feels nice, I definitely prefer the Razer switches to whatever is in this laptop, but it's never double-input on me so I can't complain too much, I do a lot of typing on the keyboard in the office and feel that it outperforms most of the standard keyboards you will find in an office setting. The trackpad is nice and accurate, standard touchpad stuff for modern laptops so again there's not too much to talk about there. For the fingerprint sensor, being on the power button is a super convenient location, I had to change some power settings to get it to work after the laptop resumes from sleep, this is something ASUS could change on their standard deployments but choose not to for whatever reasons. Overall the laptop feels super premium, build quality is nice, the machine is extremely snappy and responsive I have noticed no slowdown after about 6 months of intense use, the upgradability isn't super good as one of the RAM slots are soldered so if you upgrade you no longer have dual channel, this will hinder the performance of the Ryzen processor, however, for most gamers 16GB will suffice and at this price point there's really nothing to complain about. I would most certainly recommend this laptop to parents wanting to get their child something portable that won't break the bank and is good in build quality, while allowing them to play most games, or people like myself that want a virtualization/research machine on the go that don't play super intense games, this machine typically sees GTA V, VALORANT, CS:GO and a few other variety games at 1080P through an external display, and has never given me problems.

Honestly, I would stay away from this computer until the next revision is released. I purchased 2 of these and both of them had parts of the computer that were not functioning. The first one, the backlit keyboard and LCD backlight were not working right out of the box. The second one the Speakers were damaged and the maximum volume was little to nothing. Something is being missed in the Quality Control of these computers, and it is sad because they are good computers for a low price. At a regular retail price of $1,399.99 this is completely unacceptable.

      Dear Cain,

We sincerely apologize for the poor experience you have had with the battery life on this laptop. We recommend keeping it plugged especially while gaming. The AMD Ryzen 7 processor and RTX 3060 GPU require a lot of power, which why the battery drains so fast. As long as it is kept plugged in while gaming you should have no stuttering issue or battery life problem. Super portable for a gaming laptop

My first impression of this laptop was good. The white cover looks great and sets it apart from other laptops I have. The screen resolution and refresh rate has worked well on the few games that I've played so far. The sound quality from the built-in speakers was surprisingly great. I love how compact and portable it is for a gaming computer. Now for the things that I don't like. The 512GB drive (453GB usable) is pretty skimpy for games. Games only seem to be getting larger, so I feel like I'm going to run out of space before long. A full 1TB would have been a lot more comfortable. I also am not loving the keyboard. While the keys are spaced out pretty well, they made the arrow keys quite a bit smaller. I have some games that use those keys and it's a little awkward at times. In normal light conditions, it's also very difficult to read the letters/numbers on the keys. Even though they're backlit, in normal light they just sort of disappear. In darker conditions, though, they stand out and are readable. Unfortunately, most of the time I prefer some light in the room. Not that it impacts my gaming, but I was surprised it didn't come with a built-in camera. Most of my machines pull double duty, so it would be very useful to have a camera for Zoom sessions or Teams work calls without having to lug around a USB camera. The fingerprint sensor usually works pretty well to unlock, however one time it stopped working after the laptop went on standby. A reboot fixed the problem, so hopefully that was just a fluke. Overall, I'd say it's a good laptop. If you can live with the limitations then you'll probably like it. I'm happy with it--I just know it could be a little better.

I got the opportunity to get this laptop to review and since I was in the market for a gaming laptop this actually was the right timing. Looking at the pictures and the spec sheet you can tell this is the 2021 model not the 2022 model with the 16:1 ratio, web cam and etc but the 16:9 screen ratio, no web cam and with the older Ryzen 7 5800HS and nividia graphics , the 3060 and not the AMD graphics in the new 2022 model. Ok it's a parts bin from last year's parts but it doesn't make it a bad computer. It still have 16GB of DDR4 ram, 512GB SSD and plenty fast CPU and GPU that can play any title at it at 1080P. The screen is a 1080P screen at 144hz and it's pretty much what you expect from a laptop in this budget. It's bright enough at around 300 nits. For I/O you have 2 USB Type A ports 2 USB Type C ports 1 HDMI port , combo headphone/microphone jack , the power plug and that's about it I have mostly older titles but it has played every game I have tried like World of Warcraft, civ 5, halo wars 2, Sims 4 and other titles from the mid 2010's . All ran with ultra or high settings and got solid frame rates All in all if you're fine with not getting the newest model with the latest hardware and you want a good laptop for the less $$ spent this is a good choice
