Not what I expected. Poor battery life, even with the dedicated graphics turned off, 50% screen brightness and battery saver turned on. Game play was not great either, with lots of stutters on several different games. On DoomE, FPS would drop to ~15, for a second, and then ramp back up to 140. It was light and build quality was nice.

      Dear ChrisC,

We do understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused.

The battery life is approximately 10 hours of light to medium workload. In order to improve or prolong the battery charged time, please try to do a battery calibration manually. To start with, please drain it completely then charge it fully without using the system. Once fully-charged, please use the laptop, without the AC adapter connected, and drain let the battery drain completely again. Please repeat the charging process thereafter. Also, please verify if the unit is running with the most current system update and third-party battery draining applications are not running if not in used. If you are experiencing slow system speed or performance while playing games, please check if Windows, drivers and BIOS are up to date. Drivers and BIOS are posted at: https://rog.asus.com/ph/laptops/rog-zephyrus/rog-zephyrus-g14-2022-series/helpdesk_download/. Also, if accessing online games or web applications, please check if the unit has access to an established router and internet service is working properly since poor and unstable internet connection will definitely affect system speed and performance. If these steps were already performed to no avail, please try to run a diagnostics or optimization test using the "My ASUS" utility software or application. If this is not pre-installed on the laptop, please download the application at the Microsoft Store. For details on how to use "My ASUS", please go to: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1041686/.

If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

I have several devices all located in the same room and they all get really good wifi connection. This laptop is the only devices that has issues staying conmected to wifi. There has not been a day since Ive had it that the wifi was reliable. I am currently looking into updating the wifi card or buying an extender for just this laptop. Why a gaming laptop would have such terrible wifi connection is beyond me.

Best laptop for college and recreation. Period

I am a college student, so I wanted to get a laptop for both study and gaming. If you are in college, your laptop should have a decent battery, it should not be too heavy for carrying around on campus, and it ought to have enough power for occasionally playing games. This laptop is an absolute beast. Here is why. First, it can last more than six hours of continuous use in a college setting. I highly doubt that it can work ten hours or more, especially if you use it not as a typewriter. But be sure that it will last longer than most other gaming laptops, helping you to get through your typical day in college. Second, it is extremely thin and light. It easily fits into my backpack, it is comfortable to carry around, and, most importantly, to travel with. If you are highly mobile, as most young people are, this form-factor is amazing. My previous laptop was an eight-pound monster, so this one is shockingly light and portative. Third, it delivers amazing performance in games and productivity. The only suggestion is to drop the in-game screen resolution to Full HD (1920x1200). There is absolutely no reason to use a WQXGA (2560x1600) on a 14" display, 215 pixels per inch is an overkill for such a small screen, especially in games (it is different with graphic design, video editing, or reading textbooks). The increased framerate, conversely, will be more noticeable in games. I have played Jedi: Fallen Order, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the Witcher 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, as well as other demanding games on the highest possible setting in 1920x1200. To hit 120 FPS, you might want to drop settings from ultra to very high in some games. The difference is barely noticeable. Other things, such as the display, touchpad, and materials make this laptop feel really premium. In short, everything feels amazing. The display is sharp, smooth, and bright, although not bright enough for outdoor use. The touchpad is huge and precise, I do not even need a mouse. Actually, I do not even have it, mainly because of how good the touchpad is. Finally, the materials are great, and the laptop feels sturdy and expensive, as it should at this price point. Some things about this laptop could be a bit controversial. Let's talk about them. AMD software is not so omnipresent in games and it does not work as well but it does not matter to me personally. I still enjoy games without RTX, and I am not willing to exchange framerate for a barely noticeable visual improvement. Heat management is not the laptop's strongest part. It can and will get really hot, which could be a con for keyboard and mouse players. I had been aware of this issue before I ordered it, so I bought it with an Xbox One controller with a Bluetooth adapter and this was the best decision ever. There were some speculations about the bottom of the screen getting too hot because of how the cooling system works. I have played more than 200 hours on this laptop already and I have not noticed any change in its screen. There is little evidence that such a design might cause any issues with a laptop's screen. In general, this laptop is amazing. I bought it open-box two months ago for $1500 and I have been enjoying it since, every day. I see that now you can get it in excellent condition for $1284. If you have money, please do it. It was a great purchase for $1500, and it holds up even better for $1284. If your use case is similar to mine, it will serve you well. Do not forget to grab a controller with it and... enjoy!

      Dear Sidh,

It's unfortunate to hear that the temperature is high and the touchpad is finicky. This is not the kind of experience we want our customers to have. Have you updated the Windows OS? While gaming, please ensure no resource-hungry applications are running in the background, this will definitely spike the temperature. The heat or temperature does decrease or normalize once system resource utilization goes down. Please refer to the FAQ below. This little machine is an absolute beast! I am a college student studying engineering, and I do a lot of Matlab & Simulink, AutoCAD, and Solidworks. I also do photo editing and play some games in my free time. This machine has a super compact size, an excellent display, a super-efficient CPU that can easily last 6-8 hours of work ( depending on the type of task, 3d modeling can drain the battery fast, but light tasks like MS office work can last super long). I do also have a more powerful setup so this thing is for me to work on the go, and I'm very happy for the choise I made.

As an overall package, this is the best Windows laptop under 15". Overall - The striking design and form factor makes it feel effortless to move around a space, carry in a bag for walkable distances, and travel with, without compromising on sturdiness and build quality. With a versatile display, best-in-class battery life, outsized performance, and phenomenal inputs, the 2022 G14 allows you to feel almost unrestricted by the laptop in whatever you wish to accomplish. Detailed Review: Display - This has a 16:10 2560x1600 display that gives 1440p sharpness plus extra vertical space to work with. While it may seem overkill for a 14" display, consider the closer viewing distance compared to an external monitor as this can be used all around the house. With the extra sharpness for text, the UI, and even some high-res media consumption, the resolution is perfect as 4k would give an undiscernible distance while sucking unneeded power. There are very thin bezels along the sides and top that feel modern, and there is little to no chin depending on the angle the panel is at thanks to the 16:10 aspect ratio. The display also runs up to 120Hz with a panel overdrive option to make the response times extremely tight that makes the display great for gaming as well. With 500 nits of sustained brightness, this can be used in almost any type of light environment as well. A truly do-it-all display. Trackpad - Comes with a MASSIVE smooth glass-top trackpad with windows precision drivers and great click mechanics that make it so I don't feel the need for a mouse almost at all when I am not gaming. Matches or even beats the usual best-in-class macbook trackpads. Keyboard - In this smaller form factor, the absence of a number pad was an excellent choice by Asus. It makes the keyboard feel as though it is part of a much larger laptop. I was able to get up to speed instantly with the perfectly sized keycaps, tactile feedback, and solid travel distance. It also is not obnoxiously loud like some switches can be, and in my opinion sounds great and quiet. There is single-zone RGB lighting that can be easily customized in the Armory Crate software that comes with the laptop. It gets the job done to view keys in the dark although more light spills from under the keys to the side than I would like. Not quite Razer class level RGB but still tasteful and nice to have. Battery Life - I love that Asus includes a massive 76W-hr battery even in this smaller size laptop. This is by far the best performance laptop when it comes to battery life, giving me 10 hrs of use streaming media or doing office work/browsing. Great standby and idle times thanks to the improvements AMD made this generation. This reaches ultrabook levels of battery life even without the much more expensive LPDDR memory or low power version CPUs that those notebooks (think XPS or ThinkPad) use to achieve their battery life. Gaming on battery is TBD as I don't expect to do that much, but reports show 1-2 hours being expected, which is not exciting but not unexpected. Sound - Great sound quality, almost up there with the best Windows laptops regardless of size. Likely best speakers in the under 15" category. Macbooks still dominated in this aspect though. Comes with a solid headphone jack that can drive quite a few high-end headphones. Microphone - Haven't gotten a lot of time to test the Mic, but is much better than most gaming laptops. Comes with some AI noise-cancelling features and pickup patterns that can be customized in the Armory Crate software that work decently well. Camera - Finally Asus has realized people who game may also need a webcam (duh). They have included a 720p30fps webcam that gets the job done. While it would have been nice to have 1080p at this price point, maybe it helped keep the bezels thinner and reduce cost. As far as 720p webcams go, its actually quite good. Design/Build quality - The design is extremely elegant that catches people's eyes without being obnoxious like some other gaming laptops. There is a prismatic film behind the machined holes in the lid that when it catches the light just right at certain angles, gives a rainbow effect on the lid. The all white chassis looks great while rejecting fingerprints and actually being really easy to clean. In fact, it is easier to keep looking new and clean compared to many grey and black laptops which is unexpected. The magnesium alloy used for the build makes it incredibly sturdy while still being very light. Performance - Performance is a strong point for the price and size. They have maximized the efficiency of AMD using TSMC manufacturing to maximize the possible performance out of this small, thin, and light of a laptop. The 6700S variant beats out the 80W 3060 that most other sff laptops include. With about ~100W potential TGP and AMD optimizations (SAM, Smart Shift) and the new CPU, this laptop can match the 80-100W 3070 that was in the 2021 G15. In the games that you would really need 120Fps for an advantage this laptop can easily achieve that in all of them at least at 1080p or with lower details. FSR at ultra quality also feels great to use if you want to get a solid FPS at the native 1600p in slower eye-candy games. Also handles Switch emulation excellently in all the games I have tried. Performance will not be a bottleneck in games or creative applications now, but in ~3 years, it may struggle to meet AAA demands. About all you can ask for at this form factor, and much cheaper than the Razer 14" options. Thermals/Noise - This laptop gets hot, but everything is within spec, and if you have owned a performance laptop before, it won't be unexpected. There are three 'modes' that are quite well tuned included with the laptop in the Armory Crate software. On battery, Silent mode makes the fans essentially never even turn on during regular office work, media consumption. When plugged in and gaming, Silent mode and Performance mode offer similar performance with Silent mode sacrificing thermals for less fan noise. Performance mode plays all the non bleeding edge AAA titles at great quality and fps, while Turbo mode maximizes the thermal headroom to be able to play anything. The fans at performance and turbo levels are actually relatively quiet for the form factor, and maybe Asus did leave some lower temps or higher performance possible to keep a relatively quiet experience. Cost - As somewhat referenced before, it is important to analyze the cost of this laptop against the competition. In that sense it is much cheaper while offering great performance. While it is 100$ more expensive this year compared to 2021 if you were to get the equivalent spec, it is still a steal compared to other performance laptops at this size. At 1650$ launch this is already a solid deal, and in the future with Best Buy and Asus plentiful sales, I suspect this will be a great deal to get at discount later this year and next year as well.
