Great Specs with bad customer support and cooling.
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve had a lot of problems with it. Not on Best Buy’s end, but I keep having overheating problems with it. I ended up repasting it and it seems to be doing much better. Just be weary and know that Asus customer support doesn’t respond to you if they don’t like you.

Great specs but bad quality & poor ASUS service
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I purchased this laptop, I was excited about the great specs for a reasonable price compared to similar laptops from other manufacturers. However, after owning the laptop for just over 2 months and one week outside of Best Buy's return window, the screen now has several light cloudy areas. When I contacted ASUS customer service about the defect, they would not do an exchange and told me the only option was to send it in for repair. This is unacceptable especially considering the laptop is still basically new and after only having had it for just over two months. If you are able to spend a little more, it would be worth it to buy a different brand and stay away from ASUS.

Really great besides a couple nitpicks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Had for a little less than a month now. So far I’m loving it. Coming from a 2018 Huawei Matebook X Pro but switched because the trackpad was starting to not work anymore and I wanted a bit more power to run Solidworks for my engineering classes. Screen is great, can’t complain about power, and battery life is also *now* great. I say “now” because the laptop shipped with an older bios version that apparently killed battery life (I think 313) and I was getting maybe 2 hours just using it for web browsing and stuff. Flashed it to the latest bios (317 at this time) and those issues were solved. I limited it to 80% to preserve the battery and still have plenty of battery to get through a long school day away from the plug. I will say, however, that I like to keep it on eco mode when not plugged in. This mode shuts off the 6700s and uses the 6900hs’s integrated gpu. However, when using apps like Matlab or Solidworks, it automatically switches back to standard mode so that the 6700s can be used. While the performance of these apps is probably better using the dgpu over the igpu, it would be nice to have the choice of staying in eco mode to preserve battery. I will also probably upgrade from 16gb to 24gb of ram since Solidworks tends to push the limits of 16. Also might swap the Wi-Fi card for a faster one while I have it open, but can’t complain much about the current card, just not THE fastest. I don’t have a ton of time for gaming, but it’s been plenty fast for what I’ve tried on it. I’ve also found that 1200p looks almost the same to me on this small 14 inch screen as the native 1600p, and all the games I tried run well above 60fps at that 1200p with high settings. Overall, besides the few nitpicks, I really have no other complaints about this laptop. Highly recommend, especially at its current discounted price. I got it for $1099 and I’ve seen others get it even cheaper. I was considering waiting for the 2023 model with a 4000 series gpu, but with this things battery and performance, I don’t really see that waiting would be worth it.

Great laptop, could be better after updates.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great specs, but has some "raw" software. Boot process is buggy. After disabling POST audio in UEFI, the laptop took 6 minutes until it started showing anything on screen. Otherwise great combo of AMD cards - way easier for not tech-savvy people to maintain a decent battery life out of it.

Powerful and Sleek
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Im used to nvidia graphics cards and was unsure of how this would perform, but it was definitely worth it. Performance weakened when it wasnt plugged in to the charger but overall a 10/10 would recommend.

Working now, but major overheating out of box
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There is a ton to like about this year's iteration of the G14. The 6900HS is very power efficient, and the 6700S GPU falls between a 3060 and 3070, and performs as expected. The screen is bright and colorful, and the 16:10 aspect ratio is a welcome upgrade. Backlight bleed seems to vary between units: mine isn't so bad, but I've seen examples of it being pretty awful. This seems to be a trend among the Zephyrus line. The M16 and G15 had this same issue in 2021. But the heat issues with this laptop are real, and they're real enough that I'm not sure I feel comfortable keeping this laptop. For context, I think I'm quite knowledgeable of hardware, and it is reasonable for a gaming laptop to exceed 90C on the CPU under heavy loads, or even many gaming loads. That's not necessarily alarming, as long as the thermal solution is capable enough to keep temps under control without too much throttling. Unfortunately, the G14 doesn't seem to have that sort of thermal solution. Out of the box, with BIOS version 305, this machine was a mess. Initially it would take 10-15 minutes to boot. Once I finally got into Windows, the machine shut off. I suspect thermals, but I wasn't monitoring it. I restarted the laptop, and the keyboard lights came on, but the monitor was blank and the fans weren't spinning. After a couple of minutes, the laptop started making noise like an egg frying. I thought it was the speakers at first, but no - it wasn't. I'm assuming that the small amount of water in the vapor chamber cooling solution was quite literally boiling. The laptop deck was EXTREMELY hot to the touch. Not typical-laptop-hot. It was hot enough that I believe I would have had a minor burn if I kept my hand there too long. Easily had to be above 135F on the deck. Once I finally got into the BIOS, I saw the CPU at 97C before it abruptly shut down again. After a few attempts, I was able to update the BIOS to version 309. If you're in this position, don't use Windows Update for this firmware update. It will fail. Go to the ASUS support page for this laptop, manually download the BIOS and choose "Extract Files" on installation. Put the BIOS file on a USB drive, go into the BIOS, and use EZ Flash to manually update. As of this writing, on BIOS v309, things have been fine. Temps aren't bad; idle is around 45-55C, gaming load peaks around 88-92C on a core or two. But I'll be keeping an eye on this machine. Looking through reviews, I'm not the only one with the "frying egg" sound and head problem. ASUS: what are you doing? Is there QC over there? How do you let a machine ship with a BIOS that a) can't control fans and b) allows runaway CPU thermals without shutting down? This is dangerous, and I could absolutely see CPUs getting literally fried in this machine. There is a lot to like about this form factor and this laptop, but I can't recommend it as long as its shipping with a terribly faulty BIOS. If you bought it and you're having similar issues, use another machine to download the latest BIOS update and install it manually, and hopefully that solves your issue. But buyer beware. Hopefully a few manufacturing runs will result in a newer BIOS being shipped out of the box.
