Customers are saying
Customers often highlight the excellent performance, impressive build quality, and long battery life of the ROG Zephyrus 15.6" QHD Gaming Laptop. Many also praise its powerful GPU, lightweight design, and vibrant display, along with the keyboard. However, some users mention that the laptop can get hot, and the fan noise can be noticeable. Other criticisms include the soldered RAM, less-than-stellar speakers, and the absence of a built-in webcam.

A personal preference on a fantastic product
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I liked the laptop a lot, but certain things I didn't like in particular. I ended up returning this laptop for a Macbook Air. I hated having to change certain settings that weren't normal for average users - keep in mind, I'm not one of those average users, but having to change any settings for a premium product is a statement all in itself. Secondly, the cost of this laptop is a little to high in comparison to the market, specially when a new G15 model will be coming soon. There is not denying it's a premium feel and look, and maybe even the software, but it depends on what you are looking for. Finally, the battery life is abysmal. This isn't a laptop, it's more like a portable gaming desktop. It last around 10 hours with casual usage (like web-browsing), but with gaming usage it goes down to a bare 2.5 hours. I ended up getting the Macbook air for half the price of this, with a lot more battery life, and a more premium feel. The Mac can play quite a bit of games for casual and even the heavier hitters, and still do everything as good or better than the G15. That doesn't mean that if you are a "gamer" you shouldn't go with this, it just defeats the purpose of being a laptop. Hopefully in the next architecture revision, they will increase battery longevity, and maybe the pricing will be more on part with the competition.

Bought because multiple reviews stated it's the best price for features. Wanted a work & light-medium gaming laptop and this fits the bill with good battery life, weight and beautiful screen options

Great QHD performance in a smaller footprint
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first gaming laptop in quite some time. Decided to go for it since it's the first thinner model that has a QHD screen, 3070, and ryzen...and under 2K like some of it's competitors. Honestly it has exceeded all expectations. Runs all my favorite games to match FPS at the 165hz refresh rate (remember to tweak video quality settings per game). Screen picture quality is also insanely good, it beats out some gaming IPS monitors i've previously owned by both Acer and ASUS. I've not had any overheating issues - and for a gaming laptop the fans aren't too out of control. They do get loud at times at full load, but that's to be expected. I got a cooling dock and that has greatly helped. Overall i'm extremely happy to have a great portable gaming machine.

Great laptop. No camera though.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Nice laptop. Not a gamer purchased but I purchased it for the graphics card and Ryzen 9 so I could easily run Adobe programs with ease. Everything was great until I tried to get on a zoom call and discovered it didn’t have a camera. Never thought a new laptop wouldn’t have a camera. Then after further looking I also noticed no dvd/cd slot. Yes you can purchase an external camera but who wants to remember to grab the camera every time you have to take the laptop on the go. The picture was pretty average nothing spectacular, but it ran really nicely. The following week I purchased the Lenovo Legion Ryzen 9, 16gb w/4K. Picture is awesome and it has a camera. I put them side by side, watched movies and opened different programs and the Lenovo had a much better picture, it was fast and it had a decent camera. So I returned it and kept Lenovo. If you are a gamer I think it’s a good buy. Buy the $200 a year Total Tech protection plan they offer. It allows you to keep it for 60 days vice 2 weeks without it. I also didn’t know that it covers anything else you purchase and gives you free installs. Ex. Security systems, appliances and tv mounting. Who would’ve thunk! Being allowed to keep a laptop for 60 days to figure all the little in and outs is awesome.

Not Bad for the price
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using it for the past 2 years. It runs fast and plays any game. The screen got some bad pixels and the video cards looses its performance over time. Built quality could be better. I'm a Asus consumer and will continue to do so. However, will consider other brands in the future.

Easily Best Bang for Buck w/ a Few Limitations
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Asus Zephyrus G15 503R is the perfect balance of power and speed for anyone looking at a slim mid-tier gaming laptop but it has its limitations as a result. At this price point, it punches well above its weight class and this level of performance dollar for dollar is unequaled. With that being said, decisions were made. Aesthetics are slightly more aggressive. Reminiscent of last year's G15, with nicer angles and better venting for cooling. A lot of the issues from last years model have been addressed and improved. Build quality is good with a hybrid magnesium and aluminum chassis resulting in minimal flex in the body but the lid is flimsy and mostly plastic. The ergoLIFT hinge is the best in the business and allows for better ventilation and more ergonomics with keyboard tilt without questionable resistance or slippage. The keyboard is as close to perfect as one can get and easily one of my favorite laptop keyboards used to date. It is quiet and tactile with a nice click and single zone RGB lighting (all colors and effects but one color at a time) which is an added bonus. It has above average sounding top firing speakers, a gaming panel offering up to a WQHD 165Hz/3ms, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD storage, and a 90WH battery that supports fast charging in under 1.5 hours using the supplied power brick. Under the hood, you get an AMD Ryzen™ 9 5900HS 3.3ghz 8-core CPU and GeForce RTX™ 3070 MaxQ 8GB GPU! I/O offers an excellent selection of ports from USB-C 3.2 with Display Port 1.4 and power delivery, and USB-A 3.2 GEN2 ports. RJ45 for LAN, WiFi6, HDMI 2.0b, 3.5mm headphone jack, and micro SD to round things out. You can expand storage via a PCIe GEN3 M.2 slot as well. LIMITATIONS I will also say this powerhouse laptop is handicapped by a few decisions made by Asus in the design department though. As a gaming PC, this has lots of promise and can handle game you throw at it. However, for powerful professional tasks like video editing and 3D rendering, it will work but you cannot upgrade it like you would think. You will quickly come across the first limitation being the RAM and the decision to solder 8GB to the MoBo. Anything over 16GB, you will lose dual channel and take a hit in the performance department. I/O is quite excellent but if you are left handed you will not like it since everything is on the left side but lefties are used to being forgotten, we just adjust. I would have like to see USB 4.0 and PCIe 4.0, but for this price I understand. I don't know why we don't get HDMI 2.1 in 2021 but just another decision that limits your ability to connect better monitors. The display is a matte 15.6” LED with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 a refresh rate of 165Hz @ 3ms! This display is excellent and it easily has one of the best panels on a laptop but only offers barely over 350nits. It is color accurate to 100% of sRGB and D3 Pantone certified. You can calibrate it as well using the Armory Crate software. The touchpad is impressive as well with a larger glass area that is responsive but this could be a negative for people with larger hands. GAMING Playing games, the onboard RTX 3070 MaxQ easily handles any game I tried on their highest settings. Everything I tried was over 90fps. A tremendous amount of heat is given off during gaming. Below is my temperature readings after just 30 minutes of gaming but thermals are not an issue with the new cooling pipes and fan array. Rarely did the CPU or GPU go over 82 degrees. Below are a few of my framerate results. o Fortnite = 93fps o Shadow of Mordor = 123fps o Call of Duty: WarZone = 91fps BATTERY LIFE While gaming at 75% brightness, fans on performance mode and keys backlit on the first setting, I got about an hour and a half of battery life. While having the screen at minimum brightness, no backlit keyboard, fans on silent and web-surfing and word-processing, I was able to get about 10 hours and 37 minutes with iGPU mode on. Total recharge time was impressive at about 1 hour and 25 minutes. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES FOR GREATNESS o 8GB soldered RAM. This was a TERRIBLE decision but in line with their history in the ROG Zephyrs lineage. This decision limits your laptop performance to 16GB in dual channel but you can add up to 32GB for a total of 40GB RAM in single channel mode. As a content creation laptop this may cause you to look elsewhere in the lineup for more expensive options with dual removable slots, but as a gamer you should be just time in most cases. It could be a choice to save money, space saving for the slim chassis, or planned obsolescence on Asus's part. o No Full SD Card Slot (micro SD instead). There are many cameras out there using full size SD cards and you can get some pretty fast speeds these days, but microSD was chosen. Most phones do not support these anymore so I don't know who Asus had in mind here when they made this call. Content creators could use their camera cards to edit from directly. Another missed opportunity by Asus to stand out. It is a gaming laptop but it is a video editing beast also. o No webcam. I can see the case for both sides here as a business professional and a gamer. If you are a gamer, you will probably have a dedicated camera setup you use and the decision was probably made to cut the web cam for cost savings. There is plenty of space in the bezel so I can't see that was the reason. If you are looking for a business/work laptop, you will need a webcam for teleconferencing during these times. I have to carry a webcam in my bag and not having a web cam during these times could be a deal breaker for some. Including one would have made this the perfect laptop and it was a missed opportunity for this laptop to shine. o No touch integration. Again, I can understand the reasoning here but it would be nice to have. As a gamer, I wouldn’t want to be cleaning fingerprints all the time. It would probably mean either a more expensive laptop or a sacrifice in the display panel quality so things are just fine the way they are in my opinion. It isn't a big deal for me even though I have been using touch display in all my laptops for the past 5 years. I often find myself touching the screen but that quickly changed and I adjusted. This could also be a deal breaker for some since some people require it for work to allow for signing documents or just want the convenience of not using a mouse. o Dicey fingerprint reader performance. The power button fingerprint integration in theory is a great idea but the execution is erratic at best. When it does work, it is fast and streamlines the login process using Windows Hello. Until now, it usually didn't work well but after a few firmware updates since owning the PC, performance has improved but still not perfect. I get about 75% reads now but 25% or so prior to the updates from Asus. o Speaker response at low frequencies. The speakers sound great for ANY Windows option out there but the lows and bass feels hollow and weak. Sound profiles need to be reworked but I think the drivers are just not capable of deep full "subwoofer" performance. They have a 6 speaker array with "subwoofers" but I don't feel they are the best in class. o PCIe Gen 3.0 rather than PCIe Gen 4.0. Asus could have been wowed the crowd by including PCIe Gen 4.0 on this laptop. Releasing new tech in 2021, I would expect Gen 4 for M.2 drives. Nevertheless, the included M.2 drive from SK Hynix is fast enough for anything you need to do. THE VERDICT The ROG Zephyrs G15 503 is THE SWEET SPOT between performance and bang for your buck. You could pay $800 more for higher RAM and an RTX 3080 but it isn't going to give you the returns due to the power limitation of 100W on the GPU. Whether you plan on using this for gaming, work, video editing, or all three, you’re going to very very happy with this purchase. It is priced appropriately at $1799 for all you are getting. With the impressive build quality, impeccable screen with high-refresh rate and resolution, almost perfect RGB keyboard, incredible processing power, the amazing RTX 3070 GPU, and the best hinge in the business… THIS IS A BUY! Meet my new DAILY DRIVER.

It's a beast, and you can get your hands on it too
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is excellent. The keys, which I'm typing on right now, are smooth, the screen is beautiful, the fans aren't absurdly loud, the speed is great, the boot up time is short, and the 1TB hard drive would've been a deal breaker for me if it was anything less. The RGB keys are nice too, and the Best Buy variant is the only one to include them, which was a pleasant surprise when it came in the mail. If you're struggling to get your hands on one in-store, I'd recommend routinely checking this website, because although I signed up to be emailed when it came back into stock, I didn't get an email when I found it here. I was told to check the website by an employee when I visited my local store and can't thank him enough.

Great price to performance ratio. Small issues.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this laptop and have been playing on it for about 2 hours so far. I'll update this review if anything changes but so far it is a great laptop for what I need it for. To preface this, I have a powerful gaming desktop (i7 10700k, 2080ti pushing to a 49" 32:9 gaming monitor) all of my serious gaming is done on that, but also so is my work thanks to COVID-19. After a year of working at home (and the announcement that we'd be transitioning to WFH full time) I decided I wanted a way to play some games while hanging out in the living room watching TV and away from the desk I spend 8 to 10 hours working a day on. I originally was going to get a Razer Blade Advanced 15 with the QHD screen, but they are constantly sold out. I did try the 2020 model with the 4k screen and it was alright, but the metal casing meant the keyboard (especially the WASD keys) got SUPER warm during gameplay. This got returned. I figured the QHD screen models would also have the same problem with heat on the keyboard so I decided to look elsewhere. I also tried out a Surface Book 3 because it looked interesting and having it turn into a tablet was enticing for Civilization 6. That also got returned due to an issue with the CPU never dropping below 90 degrees no matter what was being done on it. Enter this laptop. I managed to snag it when it came back in stock (seems to come back in stock every day for an hour or two). This is exactly what I was looking for. For a sub $2k laptop, this is a great deal. It plays the games I care about extremely well. QHD screen is perfect for gaming. It is crisp but not so graphics intensive so the 3070 can power it just fine. Pros: - QHD screen in a laptop (surprised it took this long for this to happen) - 165Hz screen is a joy to use in games and just general browsing - Snappy AMD 8 core processor - 3070 is plenty of power, even if it is the Max-Q variant with less TPD - Large mouse pad. - Keyboard feels decent, a little cheap, but it is not the worst keyboard I've used on a laptop. - No webcam. This is a pro for me. I don't need one, I don't want one. This'll likely be a con for anyone else. Cons: - Screen is pretty dull. It doesn't get anywhere near as bright as the Razer laptops I've played with and the contrast is nothing to write home about. - Back light bleed is present, not awful, but noticeable in dark scenes and at startup. - Keyboard feels a little cheap compared to some of the other ~$2k laptops out there. - Fans have a slight whistle when at full bore. It isn't awful, but it is noticeable. - 8GB of soldered ram to the motherboard sucks, but I don't think I'll need more than 16GB for the games I play right now. - I don't enjoy the "edgy" gamer font on the keyboard, but this is really nitpicky. Bottom Line: This is a great laptop for the price. There are definitely better options out there, but not at this price point. ASUS definitely decided to cut some corners to keep the price down and I get it. The cons are very nitpicky and not a deal breaker for me personally. A similarly powered laptop from Razer costs several hundred more and I'm not sure it is worth it. To be honest, I likely would have gone with the 2021 Razer Blade Advanced for $2,499.99 just because it had a better screen with higher refresh rate and more RAM, but that is also $700 more and both Razer and Best Buy seem to be having stock issues with it.

Best Gaming Laptop I've owned
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is a 100% recommend for gamers out there that has been spoiled by the consoles the last few years. I grew up playing on consoles and everyone tells me how pc gaming is so much better but what they fail to tell you is just how much money you need to spend to even match the quality of the most recent consoles. I will say however, having QHD along with a 3070 GPU this brings almost every game available at a ultra setting and runs on 60FPS+. I'll say this, what I look for in a gaming PC or Laptop is that it can run everything at least 60FPS at high settings and this laptop definitely knocks it out the park! Get it!
