Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the excellent performance, impressive build quality, and long battery life of the ROG Zephyrus 15.6" QHD Gaming Laptop. Many also praise its powerful GPU, lightweight design, and vibrant display, along with the keyboard. However, some users mention that the laptop can get hot, and the fan noise can be noticeable. Other criticisms include the soldered RAM, less-than-stellar speakers, and the absence of a built-in webcam.

Love this laptop. screen is beautiful, and computer runs very fast. It does run hot when playing demanding games, so I would recommend a laptop cooler pad

While this worked, it worked great. I bought it for my home office and to play World of Warcraft with the family. There were some funky issues like the integrated HDMI port not running off the RTX 3070, so I had to use a USB-C adapter to get my external monitor driven by the selling point of the laptop. However, there would occasionally be an issue where the fans would go into turbo mode for no reason (on startup, never go down). Now, it can't even get past the boot screen if any accessories are plugged into the ports and even when it does, it won't go to the login screen. So, started out great, loved it, but now it's a stinker.

Please do your own research before purchasing. There are a lot of complaints about this laptop on the NoteBookReview forums but I will sum them up here: *Speakers have a pop that occurs with some low frequency (bass) sounds. The only fix it to adjust EQ to drop bass. It's disappointing because this actually has the best sound I have heard on ANY gaming laptop, ever, until you have to adjust the EQ. Then it's terrible *There is no hardware mux (no Optimus in any form). This means you are limited to your 3070 feeding into the iGPU (AMD) which feeds into the LCD. This actually severely limits the FPS to the display due to utilizing CPU cycles for displaying. Hardware mux allows you to feed the dGPU (your 3070) directly to the display bypassing the iGPU and CPU. This is MOST noticeably on eSports games and competitive games which are usually CPU-bound. *The HDMI output is tied to the AMD GPU which means no HDMI 2.1 output, limited to 2.0b. However, one of the Type-C connectors is actually DisplayPort-Alt which IS tied to the GPU so you can output that directly to a monitor and bypass the previous issues with lack of Optimus. *The AMD Freesync option is a much worse implementation than I have seen in the past. I run a desktop 3090 connected to an OLED LG CX and the Freesync built-in to that works very well and is 100% smooth. The implementation on the laptop is smooth but unfortunately hard to describe, it does look different and slightly worse. The positives: *Finally QHD gaming laptop screens! It's been a long time coming, you definitely see the difference. The color reproduction is very great as well *AMD finally entering the laptop game with the 5000-series Ryzen CPUs. I personally have been Intel all my life until Zen 3 released and was really impressed with the performance. This generation of gaming laptops seems cheap, mainly because it is. It seems a lot of corners were cut in order to get these out the door as quickly as possible. My suggestion is to hold off for the next gen release IF you want to go with a major retailer. I personally can deal with the speaker issue but the lack of mux is what is really killing it. Also, this would be considered a Max-Q variant in that the TGP is max 100W. The manufacturers are making it VERY difficult to get numbers these days. I have purchased two of these and will be returning them soon. I would put these into a budget gaming category. There are previous gen options that are actually faster and with options like G-Sync are cheaper as well. Again, please do your research before purchasing.

This is pretty much a perfect machine in theroy, it's specs are great and runs every game smoothly even on maxed settings. It was even relativity smooth playing cyberpunk on maximum settings while livestreaming. It's main drawback is the build quality. The chassis and screen creak if flexed, you've probably seen the reviews about speaker popping so that's apparently a common problem. That's only happened to me once for a split second and I haven't heard it any time else so it hasn't been a problem for me. The lid if the laptop is metal, but the bottom half is made of some combination of plastic and metal or something. I can't find any reliable information on what it really is, but when the device is left somewhere cold the lid will be cold to the touch when you touch it but the rest doesn't do the same. And it really doesn't feel like metal even if it is some kind of metal. Overall though it's fast, and for the hardware inside it's a great deal. If you're willing to risk the possible quality control issues and don't mind the cheap build quality it's absolutely worth it.

This is the best laptop i have ever owned. It boots up stupid fast and can handle anything i throw at it. The battery is reasonably good too, though I don't use it much unplugged. The only concern I have with it is it does get hot, but not to such an extent that it affects my ability to use it.

Amazing price to performance numbers on this thing. I can run VR sim racing and all sim racing titles at 60 frames onto my sim rigs TV. Only down side is when travelling and using it for work there is no web cam, but I can kinda live with out that. Could use some more ports though

I’m a big OLED guy and ended up selling my Oled 15 inch RaZer Blade for this. This 2k 165hz display is so smooth and beautiful. Ryzen 9 is perfect and paired with the 3070, this is the best laptop for the price IMO. No regrets. Also keyboard and mouse are a million times better than Razer Blades, there’s no comparison.

Was looking for a portable device with enough power to play some games and edit photos. I've had no issues with this laptop in either regard - though expectations need to be tempered when gaming. It's not gonna rock titles at ultra graphics settings, but it's good enough for gaming on the go. I wish the ports weren't front-oriented, but that's a minor ergonimics gripe. The trackpad and keyboard are fantastic, and the sound quality out of the speakers is impressive though not quite Dell XPS or Macbook quality.

Best gaming laptop I've ever had. The strange thing is it is also the best overall laptop I've had too. Unlike most gaming laptops before, this one is relatively light and compact. The keyboard is very nice. The touchpad is massive and great to use. 1440p 165hz screen is perfect for this level of hardware. Speakers are not the best, but are fine. Battery life is excellent as long as you are doing normal tasks. Lots of ports for a laptop this size too. Overall this is a great package.

Great product, customer service was initially good when I needed help making a selection and just ok on collection. Have had no problems with the product to date even though bing an open box item, satisfied with the speed and power of the laptop. Yes, the fans will kick in when under heavy use but it's not like a jet engine blast...merely some background noise.

The Ryzen 5900HS in this bad boy reaches almost 5500 during the all-core stress test in CPU-Z. By comparison, my desktop's freakin' Ryzen 7 5800x scores about 6800 with all-core at 4.7ghz. Single-core performance is about 50 points behind on the Asus laptop, but it also draws less than 20 watts versus my desktop's near 100 Watt -- and that's after I carefully set the voltage curve for optimal TDP and performance. Oh, and this laptop has an RTX 3070. TDP is only 95 watt I believe, but for 1080p gaming on any title that supports DLSS 2.x, you're set for the next 5 years at least. Personallly, I use it for both productivity as well as gaming. Adobe CS and Ableton run like a dream, at least, considering the portable form factor. For serious musicians, this bad boy, a Push, a nice interface, and some instruments/pedals/whatever othher fun noisemakers you have on hand are all you need for a solo performance at a nice venue. You might wanna bounce some of your samples in place after you've pushed their pitch envelope into outer space and smashed them together like a PBJ before mapping them onto a drumkit -- ya know, before you start layering those clips and adding live instrumentation -- but seriously, the Ryzen 9 in this is, well... it's a Ryzen 9. For video editors, you've got Nvidia NVENC, thanks to the RTX 3070. Graphic designers, illustrators, or more serious photographers will want an external display as the color accuracy and overall display quality are a bit... dismal. But again, it's a laptop -- you can't just bring your triple-display, RTX 3090, I9-12900K, 64 gig DDR5-ram powered beast on a cross-continental flight, can you?) Unfortunately, the followed up does NOT have an Nvidia Card, so get this year's model if you can. You won't regreg it.

I upgraded from my desktop GTX ROG STRIX 1080TI in hopes of having a just as powerful but portable computer. I was not disappointed! What I love most about it are: 1. The screen comes “calibrated” and looks way better than standard 1440p screens. 2. Speakers are phenomenal for a laptop, way better than any other windows laptop. 3. Even not being a G Sync screen it’s still VERY fast and smooth with the 3070. 4. Battery life in this GAMING laptop is insane! 5. Keyboard feels great! 6. Integrated Asus software is very easy to navigate.

Battery life is actually incredible seeing as how it is a gaming laptop. I have searched for laptops for a while and after finding this one and using it for about a month its perfect. Its thin, light-weight and the sleek design is a pretty good aspect. Runs game pretty well for example warzone gets about 120 fps on average with setting on high. The only down side is that when gaming is that the fans are loud but that is expected for any gaming laptop of this caliber. Overall great buy.

This laptop is amazing! Better build quality than I thought, top tier CPU and good GPU (80W TGP + 20W Dynamic Boost). It's good enough for me since I only do casual gaming and this laptop is mainly a working laptop for me. No broken speaker as I tested it out, so it's all good.

    Almost a Perfect Gaming Laptop

Almost perfect. This laptop is amazing for the price considering companies like Razer and MSI have laptops with almost identical priced at $2,200 USD+ while this one is priced at $1,800 USD. They keyboard and trackpad are amazing and good quality. It is very quite for a thing & light gaming laptop with such a powerful GPU and CPU. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because for two reasons, the model which I received has extremely noticeable light bleed on the top right corner. The second reason is that I am unable to use my Oculus Quest 2 VR headset with it due to the computer trying to use the integrated AMD Radeon GPU and no the RTX 3070 GPU. I have contacted, AMD, Oculus, NVIDIA, and Asus about this. Oculus told me to contact Asus and he rest couldn't help me. Asus has been trying to help me but the last time they emailed me was almost a month ago and they haven't emailed me back. Other than those two things this laptop is pretty much perfect.

    The Real Deal

TL:DR - It's pretty much perfect. If you're looking for a thin and light laptop perfectly suited for both productivity and gaming. Look no further. The absence of a webcam may be a deal breaker if you're doing a lot of video conferencing, but it's not for me. The arrival of Ryzen 5 CPUs and Nvidia 3000 GPUs in laptops is a big deal. If you're in the market for a new laptop for school, work, gaming, video/photo editing, drafting ... really anything - you need to pay attention to this one. The new zephyrus G15 is an absolute performance beast. I'm coming from a desktop i7 9700 and 2080 super, to this, and the G15 puts it to shame. Design and build quality The chassis is very well built. Asus states that it's a magnesium alloy and I don't doubt it. There is some flex on the keyboard deck, but nothing outrageous, very sturdy feeling overall. Of note, the bottom of the chassis is made of a plastic, still looks good, but would've been nice to have the metal all around. Still, I have no fear about tossing this in a bag and taking it with me, it's rock solid. And light! This weighs about 4 pounds, a bit more with the charger. I'm not fussed about laptop weight for the most part, but this feels just right to me. The laptop lid has these tiny perforations running across half its surface. Behind the little holes is some sort of ... I don't know what, but it makes for a subtle prismatic shimmering when viewed from different angles. Maybe divisive, but I really like it. The other half has a matte finish, just like the keyboard deck. The only "gamer" branding is a glossy rectangular badge in the corner that says "republic of gamers EST 2006" and has the Asus ROG logo. It's a glossy metal accent that just looks good. That's the overall impression when you unbox this thing. It's beautiful. I really love the matte finish as it looks cleaner and resists fingerprints, BUT the surface does still discolor slightly from regular handling. A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth is all it takes to keep it looking clean. The keyboard is a laptop keyboard, but a surprisingly good one. The keys have more travel than any laptop that I've used before which makes typing feel more natural to someone, like me, who types everything on an MX blue mechanical keyboard. It doesn't feel as nice and as natural as that, which is why I'm typing this review on my desktop, but it's easily the most comfortable laptop keyboard I've ever used. There's also RGB lighting which looks very nice, though it's not per-key lighting if that's something you're looking for. It's a laptop so no number pad, which isn't a big deal for me, but the removal of the print screen key is something that I'll miss. I take a lot of screenshots and I use dropbox + print screen to instantly save them. This means I've had to remap that function on the laptop. Not a deal breaker by any means, but maybe something you should know. Overall the keyboard is very well built, perfectly functional, and it looks nice. Well done asus. The touchpad on this thing .... glorious. It's big, it's smooth as silk, super responsive, and .... uh what else is there to say. It works, flawlessly. Every time. Two finger swiping up and down through web pages, right and left click, it's all perfect. I'm shocked that more companies don't put touchpads this large on their devices. It makes the user experience so much better. It's perfect. I/O There's a total of 4 usb ports (2 good ones) on this laptop, which isn't bad for it's small size. I'd really like to see USB C across the board with these, but type A is still very useful. We've also got HDMI 2.0b out, ethernet, headphone jack, and a micro sd card reader. The 2 type C ports are USB3.2 Gen 2 with displaport 1.4 support and power delivery. So that's a lot, what's it mean. It means your type c ports can charge the laptop (not fast charge) with a sold-separately 100 watt usb-c charger. You can also charge phones/tablets/bluetooth headsets and whatnot from them (that's the power delivery). You can ALSO connect up to two monitor's through USB C to drive up to a 4k display at 120hz or 1440p at 165hz. This is what my laptop will be doing for the forseeable future. There's also an added benefit in terms of performance when using an external monitor over these type c connectors. The other nice thing about the type C on these machines is that they have massive bandwidth which will support virtually any usb dongle/hub/dock you could imagine. BUT you should really only drive a monitor directly from the port, not from a hub. More on external displays later. Speakers They're not great, which isn't surprising. They get reasonably loud, and are very clear which is nice, but this is one area where you'll probably want a headset. The woofer's underneath the laptop don't really do much of anything, offering a bit of a sad thump to music and movies. It's enough to get you by, and some people may even find these to be great, but .... nah not me. My iPad Pro speakers destroy the G15 in a side-by-side comparison. But again, they're fine. Perfectly acceptable, but not at all remarkable, laptop speakers. The Mics The mics are actually far more impressive than i would have expected. I have zero intentions of using them, but doing a few quick tests with audacity and fiddling with the included audio software - it's quite impressive. The mics do a great job of catching and isolating your voice against background noises, though I don't know how well that will work to muffle game sounds if you're using these for discord. Still, very nice. The Display It's amazing. Big, bright, and bold, with that 165hz refresh rate, everything looks good here. It's also pantone validated and meets various color/brightness standards, which I don't fully understand, but man. Fantastic display. Odds and ends - - 90 watt hour batter, seems good so far for light productivity, schoolwork, streaming media etc. - fast charging, and yes it is actually fast, love to see this on laptops now - wifi6 which my router doesn't support, but still has a rock solid connection from any room in the house. - fingerprint reader, works fast and unlocks every time - micro sd card slot - sure I guess, but why? I'll never use this - the software - it's not good. the asus stuff needs to be streamlined. there's a lot of control you have over clocks/fans/power etc. so that you can fine tune your machine's performance to suit any situation, but man is it clunky. a lot of bloat here, but this is traditional asus if you've ever used their stuff before. they need to pump some more money into their software development. but it works, which is more than I can say for some other system builders Performance - GPU I've only run a few games on here so far, but they've all run very well. Control on max settings including RTX runs smooth as silk. Cyberpunk doesn't fare quite as well but still runs ultra smooth, but you're looking at fps in the 40s-50s. Still amazing performance considering my desktop class 2080 super is offering me nearly identical performance at much higher power draw. I'm impressed. Some things to note though which you may not be familiar with. Nvidia's GPU switching tech (that is software that smartly switches between the integrated GPU and the discrete GPU without requiring a windows restart) can have a significant impact on performance. I don't know why and the tech reviewers are speculating, but the sad reality is that this quality of life feature will rob you of some performance. How much? Depends on the game and your setup. You can disable optimus, but without some tinkering windows will re-enable it after a restart, and frankly having to choose which GPU to use at any given time is annoying. While nobody wants to leave gaming performance on the table in the name of convenience, there is thankfully some good news. If you're connecting an external monitor via USB-C (like I am) and using the laptop on ac, you will get the full performance that this 3070 can offer you. For whatever reason when using this setup the IGPU is completely bypassed, which takes optimus out of the equation. This can yield substantial performance gains from what I've seen (10-13% and up). Since this is replacing my bulky gaming rig, this is very good news for me, but still an annoyance for many. Nvidia needs to optimize optimus to prevent these kinds of performance drops. Still no complaints from me whether using the laptop plugged in on it's on display, an external display, or even on battery. Esports titles like CSGO and League run perfectly on battery, better plugged in, but still. Impressive stuff. CPU The CPU is a straight beast, no caveats. I ran an encode test in premiere where I was outputting a 10ish minute video to 1440p and the laptop finished more than three minutes faster than my desktop (i7 9700). Now this is anecdotal of course and the number of layers, effects, and whatnot will impact performance, but man. The CPU is just a monster. It'll handle anything you can throw at it for some time to come. No complaints here, I just feel embarrassed for my desktop (and intel) for how poorly it looks by comparison. both GPU and CPU temps are good, fans are decently quiet under load, no complaints here Final thoughts? I've never been a laptop guy, I don't like the idea of taking a pc out into the world where things are unpredictable and everyone is trying to spill water, food, or who knows what on my electronic devices ... probably. And yet here we are. My desktop PC is being relocated beneath the desk, condemned to life as a second-class "work" device. I never would have expected an 1800 dollar laptop to outperform a 2 year old 2k desktop, but here we are. The Zephyrus G15 is compact, beautifully designed, and has exceptional performance. Asus wins this round
