Customers are saying

Customers commend the ROG Zephyrus M16 for its impressive performance, stunning display, and crisp graphics. However, some users report experiencing significant fan noise and heat generation, particularly during gaming. Concerns were also raised regarding battery life and the keyboard's design. While the lightweight design is appreciated, potential buyers should consider these trade-offs.

I own the 2020 G14 and mostly love it and was really looking forward to the new Alder Lake processor. However, I didn't make it past the Windows logon as the 'E' key worked about half the time. What's up with Asus and their keyboards? The G14 launch had horrible back-lighting and now this M16 can't reliably type the single most used letter in the English language! :) I suppose I'm lucky it wasn't a lesser used key. Test your keyboards well! Will return tomorrow and I will update this review IF I decide to try a replacement.

First one worked for 2 days. Upon first startup, the laptop immediately shut off after 1-2 seconds. Had to perform 40s hard reset with power button for it to come back on. After that it worked fine for a couple days, then at one time I happen to start it up, logged in to windows and it immediately shut off without warning. Would not power on even with hard reset after this incident - completely dead. I have another one on the way to replace it. Let's hope it was a fluke. I have found 1 or 2 others with the same issue though, so be warned of unexpected deaths.

Gaming laptops are great for those who like portability and the freedom to game anywhere. The Asus ROG Zephyrus is a solid contender for one of the best gaming laptops, albeit with some issues. As with any new Windows computer, the set-up process is relatively painless. The Zephyrus is running Windows 11 and, once logged in, there were many updates. Windows Update did its thing and the laptop was ready to go. Asus software is everywhere to control fan speed and overclocking, as well as RGB on the keyboard. The computer itself features a variety of ports. Thunderbolt 4, Ethernet, HDMI, USB-A. In terms of build quality, its a very solid machine. The 165 Hz display is awesome. Colors look great and gets pretty bright. Speakers are ok, not the best. Keyboard is very mushy. I felt that sometimes it wouldn’t register my clicks, which was very annoying. Trackpad is very nice, smooth and accurate. WiFi speed is extremely fast if you have a network capable of WiFi 6. Games download at steady 770 Mbps on 1Gb Fiber network. Overall a well-built laptop. With a 12th Gen i9, RTX 3070 Ti, and 16GB of RAM packed into such a slim laptop, performance on the Zephyrus packs a punch. I tested a few games with the Fan/Overclock Settings set to Turbo. On this mode, you get the most performance with the trade off being the fan noise. Below are the results: Overwatch: High Quality - 120-170 FPS RDR2: High Quality with DLSS (Auto) - 60-75 FPS GTA V: High Quality - 75-90 FPS Fortnite: High Quality with DLSS (Quality) - 90-120 FPS 3DMark TimeSpy: 10685 For being in a laptop, I was impressed with the results. Compared to my gaming desktop with a RTX 3080, of course it won’t reach the same performance, but it is still great for some high action gaming. The Asus ROG Zephyrus really surprised me. With the awesome display and powerful internals, it’ll make a great gaming experience for anyone looking for a high performing laptop.

If you go back through reviews for this product you may see that there was some controversy early on when it was released. If you understand what you're getting into this is an amazing gaming laptop. First off, know that there is 16GB of RAM, but 8GB is soldered to the motherboard. This means you can only upgrade the one stick. That said, I find 16GB is fine and don't feel the need to upgrade at this point. Also, yes the fans run high when playing, but not any more than any of the other gaming laptops I've used. In Turbo mode they can be distracting, but most of the time I wear a headset anyway. Other than that, this machine is a beast. I've spent the past few days trying out a variety of games on the amazing built in 2560x1600 monitor and my Samsung Neo G9 Ultrawide gaming monitor. The built in screen is amazing. The 2560x1600 is a good sweet-spot for gaming, sharper than full HD, but easy for the RTX3070ti (With 8GB) to drive at high frame rates. The first thing I tried was Microsoft Flight Simulator. With the settings all up at their highest I'm getting around 40FPS on both the laptop monitor and the Neo G9. At this point everything is photo-realistic and the game runs smoothly. Horizon Zero Dawn runs at nearly 80FPS with all settings all the way up and Mass Effect Legendary Edition maxes out at around 165FPS at full settings. All of these look amazing on the internal screen, which runs at 165Hz! I've tried a few others like Guardians of the Galaxy, Forza Horizon, Madden 22, Jedi Fallen Order and Doom, all with their setting all the way up, and they've all performed amazingly with good frame rates. This thing is a beast and will definitely lend itself to a great experience regardless of what you throw at it. I did have considerable challenges getting the laptop to work correctly with the Neo G9, but did get it to work. HDMI seems to be a no-go, even with a high-speed 8K cable. I can't seem to get it to work at full resolution. I was finally able to get it to work with a Thunderbolt to Displayport cable. There is a mux switch that allows for direct output from the RTX card, which I believe works through the HDMI port, so I'm likely taking a very slight performance hit this way. It should be noted the Neo G9 is a finnicky monitor to work with. There's a pre-installed app called Armoury Crate (with it's own dedicated function button for quick access) which has some pre-defined performance curves. The Turbo mode slightly overclocks the video card and turns up the fans. I was able to see a few FPS improvement between that and Performance mode. Speaking of overclocking, the laptop comes with a huge 290W power brick. It can also be powered by USB-C power delivery (Not included) if you want to stick with the internal Intel XE video card. The keyboard is a nice tenkeyless chicklet style with single zone RGB lighting. I do wish it was set up in zones like my older ROG laptop, but I'm easily amused by lots of RGB. The trackpad is amazing and is similar to those on MacBooks with the large, glass top. The lid has a cool design with tiny holes over a surface that has a rainbow appearance in good light. It looks like a lighting effect but isn't. Very cool! The inside has a soft-touch rubber coating that looks terrible as soon as you put your hands on it. It looks oily right away and I find myself cleaning it with a microfiber rag a lot. I worry about how it will hold up over time. The built in speakers are very impressive and have very rich sound for a laptop. I would not hesitate to use them for light gaming and have even witched a couple movies on here with just the built in speakers. Speaking of movies, the screen does support HDR streaming and looks great for movies and games. The chassis is sturdy and I can't find any creaking noises when handling it. The keyboard has no give to it when typing; the top is nice and rigid. Overall the case is thin and fairly light considering how powerful the hardware is. My only minor complaint is where the power jack is located. It's in the middle of the left side around other ports and is a right-angle plug that is tricky to work around. I wish it was on the end. I would also like 1-2 more legacy USB ports, but I do like that there are two USB-C/Thnderbolt ports included. There's also a slot for a MicroSD card, and the card sits flush when inserted, so it can be left in permanently. Right now with the price of video cards through the roof, a laptop may be the best choice for gaming. I can't recommend this guy enough. I feel like it's future proof for at least 3-4 years and comes out of the box ready to play!

Alot going for it but with little margin for error

So the Zephyrus M16 is receiving a lot of hate for some issues regarding the RAM. I think the M16 has so much going right for it. Unfortunately, when you get into this price range, you have little margin for error. Last year, the 2021 M16 just did not impress. Especially when compared to the Zephyris G15, it just did not seem like good value. 11th gen Intel hardware just was not up to par in either performance, efficiency, or value. Also, the graphics card was capped at a 3060Ti. This year, that changed a little bit with 12th gen Intel Alder Lake hardware and allowed upgrade to RTX 3080 Ti. This model specifically came with the 3070 Ti. In terms of design, I think it looks sleek for a gaming laptop. It doesn't look too flashy and I honestly didn't feel awkward using it in the office. I think The build quality is decent although there do seem to be some quality control issues when it comes to the lid. The coating is a fingerprint magnet, especially the arm-rest rubberized coating. Not the biggest fan of the coating and the smudging you constantly have to clean. Another thing that I don't' like is the fact that the fans blow directly onto the screen. The vents are placed between the body and screen so it blows hot air directly into the screen. That was a very poor design choice in my opinion and is sure to reduce the lifespan of the screen. In addition, another poor design choice is the fact that the status LEDs are also placed between the body and the screen. They shine off the display if you angle it right which is absolutely annoying, especially when watching movies. I actually placed electrical tape over them as I kept oscillating between getting used to them and noticing them and getting annoyed all over. In terms of specs, this really is a beast. A gorgeous 16 inch 16:10 non-touch matte panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and runs up to 165 Hz. 12th gen Alder Lake i9. RTX 3070Ti. 16 GB DDR5 RAM. 1 TB SSD. It's got all the ports you need with USB-A, HDMI, headphone jack (luxury!), microSD slot, USB-C. Much of the negative reviews come from the fact that ASUS mistakenly reported that there was 16 GB of RAM soldered on when in fact that is 8 GB soldered on with a 8 GB RAM stick. Now the 8 GB RAM stick can be removed and swapped with a higher RAM stick so it's not the end of the world but this definitely caused some negative feelings. The keyboard is excellent. I really enjoyed typing it on. It has good key travel with good tactile feel. The RGB backlight is also cool. The trackpad is a nice large glass pad. I had no complaints about. The display is gorgeous. Unfortunately it does not have GSync. It also doesn't get too dim which I do not know why laptop makers just don't allow a wider range of brightness. In terms of performance, it is a BEAST. You have the use Turbo mode to really take advantage of what this computer can offer, and unfortunately it sounds like a jet engine. You can look up all the benchmarks and performance stuff online. You can solidly run all the games you want. I would just make sure to wear headphones and also stay plugged in. Other than the fan noise, heat is also an issue. It can run really hot. I think that is a sacrifice that has to be made if you are going to make a thin and light device this powerful. Battery life is awful. You obviously should not game without being plugged in. Even on Silent mode, battery saving mode, 70% brightness, keyboard backlight turned off, and just web browsing/watching videos, I was getting about 4-5 hours of use. All in all, there is alot to like with this device but at the premium you are paying, there is just less room for error. There were some questionable design choices that caused just enough annoyance for me. I do think you get great performance in a sleek and light design but that comes with the tradeoff of noise and heat.

First off the over look and design of the ROG Zephyrus M16 is very nice with the rainbow sparkle lid and the great feeling rubberized keyboard surface top. The screen is bright and beautiful and really responsive. While it does come with 16 GB of RAM, it comes with 8 soldered in and 8 in expendable memory, and really at this price point I would have preferred to have both sticks soldered in with additional expandable memory. Everything performs great gaming wise, load times are super quick, and with most games I tested able to run Ultra settings at 60 fps or higher, and High in the 120+ range. But with all the power they've packed into this small frame, it creates a ton of heat, and by no means should you play this in your lap. The fans do a good job to dispel the heat but they are ridiculously loud. You're going to need some headphones if you want to game on the M16 because you're not going to hear anything but these fans when playing. The battery depletes super fast, so you're going to need to run this plugged in when playing games. Among the other things that I did not like were the position of the notification lights, where it was constantly reflecting on the screen, or when connecting my wireless xbox controller adapter I found the USB port to be extremely tight, and I was afraid I was going to break the port or my adapter. Overall it does everything it's supposed to do, but I just get the feeling that there's more to be desired.

      Dear Valued Customer,

We're sorry to hear about the overheating issues you're having with this model. Rest assured we will take a note of this review and passed it on to our development team. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full throttle. Please ensure the air ventilations are free from obstructions in order to have an efficient airflow for better heat dissipation. While gaming, please ensure no resource-hungry applications are running in the background, this will definitely spike the temperature. The heat or temperature does decreases or normalizes once system resource utilization goes down.
For more information send us an email at customerloyalty@asus.com and provide the link of this review for reference. We’ll do our best to provide a quick resolution to your case. A Hot Rod Gaming Laptop

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 is an awesome and powerful gaming laptop. Its a gorgeous QHD display, 165hz refresh rate, 16gb of RAM, 1Tb SSD hard drive, and a powerful 3070 series graphics card, all in a sleek and stylish design. All the stats and features of this laptop can be found in the details for the laptop so I wont bore you with repeating what is already available, ill just get to my experience with the Zephyrus M16. The laptop is great, I ran all my favorite games with no issues, from older games that dont require heavy GPU usage like Dead Space 1&2 and Fallout: NV to newer heavy GPU using games like Halo Infinite. They all ran buttery smooth and looked so good. Now lets get to the biggest issue with this impressive machine, and that is the heat. Heating is always gonna be an issue with gaming laptops since the sleeker designs means faster temperature build-up, but I found my Zephyrus M16 got uncomfortably hot pretty quick when running Halo Infinite. The high heat means the fan kicks on to cool down the laptop and the fan can get pretty loud. So when I call this laptop a "Hot Rod" I'm being a bit facetious about the whole thing. Overall, the Zephyrus M16 is a powerful gaming laptop that looks great and runs even better, the heat is a noticable issue, but its something that anyone who's owned a gaming laptop already has experience with. I still love the laptop and would still recommend this as a gaming laptop option.
