Customers are saying

Customers commend the ROG Zephyrus M16 for its impressive performance, stunning display, and crisp graphics. However, some users report experiencing significant fan noise and heat generation, particularly during gaming. Concerns were also raised regarding battery life and the keyboard's design. While the lightweight design is appreciated, potential buyers should consider these trade-offs.

Best gaming laptop I've had so far. Especially for the discounted price this is an absolute machine. Would recommend to anyone looking for a reliable and fast laptop. It also has overclocking settings if needed. ASUS never disappoints me.

Coming from a G14 and moving to this, it has been the best choice I've made. Hands down, the improvement not just in my games, but the increased performance in my productivity with the larger screen is tenfold. Hands down would come back and recommend over and over. I have added a second 1TB M.2 storage and upgraded the RAM to 40GB and this one will be the one for me for a while.

Coming from the previous generation of the Asus ROG Zephyrus m16" laptop. Personally, I define performance as when hardware and software work seamlessly without any issues that impede the device from running smoothly. This ASUS - ROG Zephyrus 16" WQXGA 165Hz Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i9 - 16GB DDR5 Memory - NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti - 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD is a powerhouse machine equipped with a ton of I/O. The screen bezels are remarkably thin, housing a gorgeous 2560x1600 resolution at a 156Hz refresh rate, which is a must for gaming and even smoother screen refreshing. Playing games is fluid and has no lag or screen tearing and no backlight bleed. The combination of Intel Core i9-12th generation (Alder Lake) with 15Gb DDR5 memory and Nvidia 3070ti provides high performance, to me, is incredible. I can't demand more than that! Unlike my previous generation Model: GU603HM-211.ZM16, this new Asus ROG, has a hybrid GPU, the dGPU (dedicated), and iGPU (integrated from the CPU) for performance balancing purposes. With that being said, I can freely bypass the iGPU by disabling it through the MUX switch from the pre-installed Asus Armory Crate and keep only the dGPU enabled. I found this feature beneficial since it allows me to choose between higher or lower performance. The speakers are crystal clear with Dolby Atmos; I was blown away by the sound clarity. Keyboard typing is smooth, and the trackpad is very responsive. I like the updated login method using its stunning webcam for Windows Hello compared to the integrated fingerprint into the power button from its predecessor. Startup and Login are amazingly fast. The laptop feels premium and powerful for gaming, video editing, productivity, and office work. I would like to see two things in Asus's next update: Managing the fans as they become loud when running and the laptop bottom gets hot. In addition, to move the charging port further down instead of being in the middle. All in all, personally, I'm completely satisfied with my Asus ROG laptop regardless of how the RAM is configured onboard as long as I experience peak performance with no lag!! I tried it in gaming and office work, and the results are exceeded my expectations. So try it, and you won't regret it!!!!!

The M16 is the total package. The keyboard is great to type on, the screen is bright and beautiful, and the gaming performance is worth every penny. I only have two cons. The black finish they put on the M16 becomes gross looking even with minimal use. You practically have to wear gloves while using it just to keep it clean. The second con is that this thing uses 47% of its ram while idle. I’ve done everything I can to bring this down but nothing works. Sometimes when I run a game it will warn me that I need more than 7.5 gigs of available ram to run this game. That being said once the game kicks on, the M16 sorts it’s self out and is able to run the games flawlessly. I’ve had zero issues multitasking or gaming for long instances. I was able to work around the ugly stains everywhere by installing a skin on the lid and on the keyboard. It changed the look of the M16 and made it more resistant to stains. Overall great laptop!

Beast mode gaming specs and performance

I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous before getting the new ASUS ROG Zephyrus 16” gaming laptop because of the reviews I had read online. However, after getting the laptop, setting it up, testing it and gaming on it, my reservations were relieved and at ease fairly quickly. I will address some of these issues that I ran across from online reviews and forums throughout my review. I have owned several ASUS gaming laptops in the past and have always relied on them to manufacture a solid product with the latest technology and never having to worry about any issues for the life of my ownership. I still use the one I have had for the past couple years and recently even upgraded to a newer 2021 gaming laptop, not ASUS, with similar specs including a NVIDIA GeForce 3070 graphics card, high end processor (not Intel) and 64GB of DDR4 memory so that’s somewhat of what I’ll be comparing it to. After the initial unboxing, plugging it in for its inaugural charge, performing an expected massive amount of update, and downloading, setting up and syncing all my software user accounts, I was finally able to start enjoying this gaming powerhouse. The look of the laptop is very discreet compared to some other gaming laptop manufacturers with RGB on the outside, I assume to flex your nerd muscles. You would honestly never know this was a gaming laptop and what was inside the beast at first glance which is not necessarily a bad thing. I immediately noticed the feel of the laptop’s chassis near the trackpad as it is almost cushiony to the touch versus a hard, cold metallic feel. The other thing I noticed right off the bat is the size of the trackpad; measuring relatively large at 6” diagonal, or 5” by 3 ¼”, versus the smaller 4 ½”-5” trackpads I was accustomed to. I was a little concerned at first as I thought I would be rubbing my palms across the trackpad while typing but, surprisingly, this hasn’t been an issue at because the outside of my hands rest comfortably on both sides of the trackpad while I’m typing and I try to use my wireless mouse as much as possible. The backlit mechanical RGB keyboard is also soft and quiet to the touch and very responsive. Now for the gamers. I’ll start off with the beautiful 16” full HD 2560 x 1600 165Hz screen. Yes, it’s quite large and not so portable but why else would you even be in this market if you didn’t want the bigger, better screen. It is very bright, crystal clear and beautiful color. Plus, it pairs well with extended monitors if you have that set up. Maybe it’s just me but I just can’t imagine plugging in a 14” laptop to a 27”+ monitor and expecting it to look right. I would like to mention there were no dead pixels or burn in on the screen I received as I have read in other reviews. The screen looks incredible when running any games or video, but especially on high end AAA games. You might think that a laptop with these specs might pair better with a 4k screen however if you’re gaming straight off this screen and not an external screen, you won’t notice too much on a 16” screen. Regarding the hardware ASUS managed to pack into this gaming laptop, which surprisingly only weighs about four pounds considering the specs, I think most gamers would be extremely happy with the set up. The new Intel i9 12th generation 14 core processor paired with 16GB of DDR5 4800 MHz RAM is blazing fast; I was multitasking running a AAA game and multiple other apps on three separate screens with no noticeable slowdown at all. The one major downfall, which I’m not going to sugarcoat because it is a pretty big flub by ASUS, is the fact that 8GB of the DDR5 RAM is on the motherboard paired with a separate 8GB of DDR5 RAM in the slot. This makes upgrading the RAM impossible and could be pretty frustrating for those that need the additional RAM. I will say the RAM included did handle everything I threw at it during the initial testing but I also don’t do much video editing or any computer automated drafting which adding more RAM could be beneficial. Needless to say, this was still frustrating for many, including myself, considering I upgraded my last laptop to 64GB DDR5 RAM (probably overkill for what I use the laptop for) but doesn’t leave me with any other options as far as I know. The laptop does have two M2 slots to add or upgrade the SSD so at least they didn’t nix that from this build. Regarding the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 TI 8GB graphics card with ROG boost at 100 watts, or 120 watts with Dynamic Boost 2.0, this is where the “beast” in “beast mode” comes from. This graphics card handled any AAA game I threw at it a high-resolution settings including ray tracing and variable rate shading. Using the included ASUS Armory Crate software to bump up the settings, gaming looked, felt and handled incredible. Using 3rd party software, I ran several benchmarks on the laptop with pretty impressive results. I was clocking over 100 FPS on some of the benchmarks but averaging about 60FPS most of the time without missing a beat. The overall scores compared to others running and uploading benchmark results online were also very impressive. There were some concerns raised from other reviews and forums I ran across online before I tested the ASUS Zephyrus laptop regarding the noise from the fan. Compared to the other newer gaming laptops I have reviewed, the fan noise was similar and I didn’t notice it being any louder than those other laptops when running side by side. There was also some mention of “bloatware” or software that is unnecessarily installed on the OS however, as we should all know at this stage, this is very common especially for a well-known company such as ASUS to include with their rigs. It wasn’t any software I wasn’t accustomed to seeing on any of my other laptops upon delivery and it didn’t not make a bit of difference to the performance or storage in the long run. I swear these same complaints about the bloatware that takes up a .01% of storage compared to the 150GB AAA games these same people end up installing anyways make no sense to me. Hence why some are referred to as internet “trolls” because they have nothing better to do than complain I suppose. I also heard some mention and make not of the laptop getting extremely hot near where the screen meets the keyboard but I didn’t notice this one being any hotter than the other laptops I was using with similar specs however I also wasn’t gaming more than an hour or two at a time so perhaps that was the difference. While running the benchmarks and playing AAA games, I never had the temperature go over the 100-degree mark. Also, considering the hardware and specs this rig has, you can imagine they had to put some pretty legit cooling fans in it to pump out all that heat the processor and GPU put out. I don’t want to discredit them so perhaps these folks did receive a faulty device. Perhaps a software update was done between then and now that I’m unaware of to resolve some of these issues. Or, perhaps I received a fantastic gaming laptop from a well known and reputable manufacturer as promised and those folks were just unlucky… I’m not sure in any case and I digress. Rest assured, that’s what warranties are for. You are also considering purchasing a high-end gaming device from an authorized, well-known, retailer and shouldn’t have any issue resolving what may, or may not be, wrong with said device. This is a gamble we all take with technology and new devices. I get a reminder of this every time I walk past a reputable cell phone, tablet, computer, etc. manufacturer in the mall when the line is 100 people deep that, not surprisingly, all have issues with their devices. Overall, I have been very pleased with the new ASUS Zephyrus gaming laptop and you really can’t go wrong considering the hardware they packed into this beast. For the next update, I just wish ASUS would just include two RAM slots so you can upgrade the memory if you prefer.

    Gaming laptop with superb performance

Gaming on laptops used to not be that great of an experience because you were always sacrificing something in order to play games such as quality or performance. In the past few years gaming laptops have become so great that that worry is a thing of the past. Another problem that gaming laptops have always had due to their form factor was heat. With new designs and more power efficient chipsets this has also allowed the performance to increase and compete with other high end gaming computers. Design I am a huge fan of the design of this laptop. It is a rubberized plastic material on the keyboard side. On the top of the laptop, it is metal, and the bottom is just plastic. Overall, all the materials feel very premium and durable. From my experience so far, you can see a few fingerprints, but it could be a lot worse, and I think it is just fine. When you open the screen, it raises the laptop up in the back which I believe helps with ventilation underneath. However, this design covers the vents on the back of the laptop but I have not noticed it to cause any issues. The is a heavier laptop which is to be expected but as for gaming laptops I would put in on the average to lighter weight laptops. The screen is beautiful. It has very thing bezels and a 16:10 aspect ratio which in my own opinion make it look much better than other laptops I have used. It has a high resolution 2560 x 1600 and 165ghz refresh rates which provides an amazing gaming experience. One thing that ASUS has done which gives it a huge advantage is packing a large screen into a small package. It is the same size as most 15 in laptops with a 16 in screen. The only sacrifice is that since it is a small package you do not get a 10 key or any extra keys. The keyboard and trackpad are both decent. My only wish for the keyboard was that it was a little bigger and had fully size arrow leys. They keys do have good travel to them, and I love that they have rgb customizable back lighting. The trackpad is nice and large and has good feedback to it. When unplugged and just using for normal day to day task this computer stays quiet and does not get to warm. When playing games or doing anything graphic intensive, the fans will kick in high. Fan noise does not bother me, and I would rather it be able to keep itself cool rather than be quieter and get extremely hot. Even after hours of gaming it was able to stay cool the entire time. It did get a little warm but overall, the ventilation is great. The speakers are good enough for what they will most likely be used for. They sound good and can get loud enough for watching videos or movies. Or even listening to music. I believe that most people will be using a headset when playing games anyway. I did play a few games just off the internal speakers and they were not bad at all. It does include a webcam with not that great of quality. But it does work if you need it to. To my surprise the webcam also includes infrared which allows you to use Windows Hello. This is one of my favorite features because I hate having to type in my password. In my testing the facial recognition works fast, and I never had any issues with it. Ports One of the most important things to me as a gamer is ports because I have a lot of accessories to plug in. It has all the normal ports you would expect from a full-size laptop. The only negative thing I can say about the ports is that it only has 2 USB-A ports. It also has 2 USB-C ports which is probably a smart move but personally I would have rathered 2 USB-A and 1 USB-C. It is not a huge deal it just means you must use an adapter if you need 3 full size ports. The one bonus to this setup is that it can use both legacy and future accessories. It includes a micro-SD card slot instead of a full-size slot. Although I would have liked a full-size SD it is not a big deal to just plug in a card reader. I believe that people who might use this computer for video or photo editing would have preferred a full-size slot. Performance Performance is what most people care about when it comes to a gaming laptop. The design and other aspects can help enhance your experience, but performance is ultimately what you are paying for. Starting off with the CPU, it is a beast. With 14 cores this CPU can handle just about anything. One thing that Intel has gotten pretty good at is making efficient chips that can perform smaller tasks and prioritize battery life but then when needed use the full potential to render videos extremely fast or have high FPS in games on high settings. The dedicated graphics in combination with the CPU make playing any of the biggest games a breeze for this machine. This computer comes with 16 GBs of ram and only one stick is upgradable. I am not a huge fan of this setup and I wish it came with 32gbs of ram. However, currently 16gbs of ram is plenty for any of my tasks and gaming. I believe the future of gaming is where this could become more of an issue but only time will tell. My favorite games to play are first person shooters. I tested out all the recent call of duty games on this machine and it was able to get 120 and higher fps running high settings. To me this is amazing and is owed to the high-end CPU and GPU combination. ASUS does include something called Armory Crate which allows you monitor performance, CPU temperature as well as CPU/GPU usage. I am still learning everything this program has to offer but overall, it seems to be useful. I was able to squeeze about 3.5-5 hours of battery life out of this when doing everyday tasks. Although this is on the low end of laptops, I believe it is plenty especially from a machine with such a powerful CPU. I prefer to be plugged int whenever doing anything graphic intensive anyway. When the laptop is left turned off it does not drain the battery as fast as some other laptops I have used. Upgradability Something I always include in my laptop reviews is how easily can it be upgraded. Most gamers want to be able to upgrade their laptops because new games come out and sometimes might require you to upgrade certain parts of your computer. One example of this is how large games have become. Being able to upgrade to a larger SSD can be crucial. There are two m.2 SSD slots in this laptop. One of the first things I did was add an additional 1 tb of storage which gives me now a total of 2TB. Removing the bottom panel is not extremely hard. One thing that I have never seen before was how long the screws were. If you have ever lost a small screw this is a miracle because they are much larger and easier to find if you drop one. There are three screws in the middle which have sticky covers over them. These covers are hard to put back on and easy to lose but do not matter all that much. One of the screws on the bottom corner starts lifting the cover off which makes it super easy to remove the rest of the way. This design really had people who want to upgrade in mind. As already mentioned only one stick of RAM can be upgraded which is not the end of the world but it would have been nice to be able to upgrade both. Conclusion Although I knit picked a little when it comes to the design, I still believe this is one of the best gaming laptops on the market. Most of the development was clearly put into the performance and for a gaming laptop that is what matters. The ability to pack that much power into such a small package is truly amazing. If you are looking for a ready out of the box laptop that can play any game you throw at it than this is the laptop for you.

FIRE HAZARD and Terrible Paint quality

Two words to describe this laptop after my experience with it: "FIRE HAZARD". I had to send in the laptop to the manufacturer to get the heating issue resolved and they brushed off the images attached to this review as cosmetic damages(An Asus technician sent me these photos of the issue). It wasn't until I contacted an Asus representative that they disclosed that the CPU had melted and was burned, they mentioned that it had failed both their “adt” and “aging” test. With their testing they also found that the laptop would reach 98C and shutdown as it would get extremely hot. I was clearly sold a faulty unit that BestBuy decided was up to standard of their company. I was unaware of how drastic the issue at hand was until I saw the images of the issues. For the damage to have reached the thermal block (damage in the first pic) seems like it was more than just cosmetic damage. The CPU its self will eventually cause its self more damage as shown through their test that it couldn't pass. This isn't the quality I was expecting from a $2000+ laptop. Especially the "support" on both ends with BestBuy and Asus/ROG has been disappointing as this issue has been in progress for almost a total of three weeks with no one wanting to take responsibility of the issue at hand. For an issue that can become a fire hazard to be only "cosmetic damage" is unbelievable, If you want to save yourself the stress of having to deal with something like this just get any other laptop from any laptop company that will help you solve the issue in a timely manner and from a store that will take your concerns of your laptop heating up to high temperatures seriously, unless your fine with your new top of the line three month old laptop CPU giving out and Failing. Also the paint on the laptop plate that covers the keyboard and runs onto the edges of the laptop has a clear coat of a rubbery material that will rub off and start to unstick from the rest of the laptop. the quality of that wasn't good either since the rest of the laptop is made of quality material yet that portion of the chassis is terrible, I've included pictures of that as well. They will blame you for user damage even though you can clearly see that it is peeling under the paint on its own. This issue was all over the area of the laptop that was mentioned, even though the rest of the laptop had no actual cosmetic damage and was taken care of, they still claimed it to be "out of warranty". Within the pictures of the paint damage you can zoom in and there is no damage done to the hard plastic since if it was user damage then the underside of the paint should have been damaged yet its not. For having it for three months and the paint peeling on its own I cant imagine how it would continue to deteriorate and peel off later on down the line. The estimate that Asus gave me totals to almost $2,000 which at that point its almost the same price to buy a whole other new laptop. I hope this review helps you take a good decision on your next laptop. On the broken down review portion of this review covering the battery, speed, and display I will give it credit for when it actually worked before all of this.

Admittedly I was hesitant to purchase this laptop due to all the Q/A issues I’ve seen in other reviews but I decided to buy it anyway. I could not be happier! This machine is so powerful and versatile. The display is so beautiful and bright. Yes the fans are very loud but only when gaming and I use a headset anyway so it’s no big deal. Back light bleed is very minimal on my unit and battery life is decent. Overall I would recommend buying this new when it’s on sale. Avoid open box because quality varies drastically.
