The Asus TUF 15.6" Gaming Laptop is a decent choice for any gamer that is starting to get into gaming on their PC and wants the portability of a laptop. The first thing I noticed about this laptop when it arrived was the care with which it was packaged, which tells me that Asus really cares about their product. Inside the outer box was an inner box that was wrapped with 2 layers of protective wrap. The inner box is like a briefcase and opens up to reveal the laptop and power cord. The laptop I have is colored Mecha Grey, and is embossed with the Asus TUF symbol on the top of the lid. It doesn't scream that it is a gaming laptop which is nice for users that may choose to use it for other purposes or in an office setting. The laptop weighs just under 5 pounds which is quite nice for a gaming laptop. The screen has a thin bezel on three sides with a larger bezel on the bottom side. The screen is a 144Hz LED IPS Full HD screen that has a nice brightness to it before any adjustments are made. The keyboard is backlit, with the WASD keys being emphasized for gaming purposes. The Aura app is used to control the backlighting configuration and presents the typical options. The keyboard has a full 10 key number pad, which is a requirement for me. There is a row of 4 media buttons that sits above the F1-F4 function keys. The Escape key is just slightly set off from the function keys which is nice for hitting it without taking my eyes off the screen. The touch pad is a decent size and is slightly offset to the left of center. I didn't use the touchpad much, but when I did it seemed to respond how I would expect. There is a 720p webcam in the top screen bezel; for some reason it does not have a privacy slide, but I taped over it. For ports, the laptop has 1 HDMI 2.1 and 2 Thunderbolt 4 display connectors. It has 2 USB-A 3.2 and 2 USB-C 3.2 ports. I started it up and went through the usual Windows Account linking and Driver Updates. The laptop booted very quickly and ran quietly. I was able to start downloading my favorite game platforms and games in no time at all. This laptop has a 1 TB SSD which seemed to read and write at a good speed but fills up very quickly the large game file size of today's games. There was some noticeable heat that came through the keyboard, but that is typical of every gaming laptop. The heat wasn't particularly bad. When it came to performance, many of the specs for this laptop make this Asus TUF a tier above entry level, specifically the amount of RAM and the video card. It comes with 16GB of DDR5 4800Mhz memory which has room to expand to 32GB. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 is a very nice discreet graphics card for a laptop and has 8GB of VRAM. Those options alone are significant and make a huge difference in the performance of the laptop. However, this laptop is throttled by the CPU. The laptop comes with an Intel 13th Generation Core i7-13620H which underperforms based on GPU benchmarks on popular benchmarking sites. The result of this combination of good and bad is that I had a mixed bag of real world results while gaming. In Fortnite, which can be CPU intensive, I experienced some startlingly bad stuttering, especially during any combat encounters. I had to double check that my drivers were all updated. In other games, like Call of Duty Warzone and the brand new XDefiant, I had great results and didn't see much stuttering. This laptop, based on price and specs, is not meant to be a top-tier gaming laptop. There are more expensive gaming laptops out there with better specs, but the price point gets high very quickly. I didn't run across a game that this laptop couldn't attempt to play, but I did have to adjust the graphical settings down at times for a smooth playing experience. This wasn't unexpected given all of the above. The laptop claims to have an 8 hour battery life. I would highly recommend having this laptop plugged in while using it except for the lightest of use cases. This applies to any gaming laptop. A gaming laptop often throttles down significantly while unplugged to save battery life, which makes gaming performance terrible. I did get to use the laptop for work purposes as well, and it performed very well. For office work it is overpowered, so that it can multipurpose with many apps open at once, handle large spreadsheets with ease, and perform conference calls all at the same time. So this laptop is professional enough to use for work while powerful enough for gaming later in the day. Overall, this is a good gaming laptop at the price point. It is versatile, has a nice GPU, and handles most games (sometimes with a slightly reduced graphics setting to get a smooth experience). The CPU is underpowered in comparison, which can lead to some uneven gaming performance. I would recommend this laptop for a gamer that is new to PC gaming or is moving up from a beginner gaming laptop setup.
