I've purchased several Atlantic media centers in this same exact style and design in the past. They've always been a great value for the money, provided a solid product, and looked good enough on a wall to blend in with my other furniture. The capacity is hard to beat without spending hundreds of dollars. Where this item falls short is in the shelves. As recently as a year or two ago, the adjustable shelves provided with this unit were built in the same size and thickness as the middle built-in shelf, and made of the same materials (MDF). However, sometime recently, the company has decided that it wanted to save some money by making the adjustable shelves thinner, shallower, and out of plywood as opposed to the MDF of the rest of the unit. This is a disappointing turn of face that, in my opinion, makes the unit undesirable, and hardly usable. The shelves are so shallow now that your DVDs, video games, books, and CDs all protrude out a good inch or two from the edge of the shelf. Everything looks like it's going to fall off at any moment, and that a good bump will send everything flying. The construction is no longer quite as good either. The pre-drilled holes aren't as accurate as they used to be, the locking nuts don't work if you screw down the screws all the way. You have to intentionally leave the screws loose to allow enough room for the nuts to tighten down over them. I give the original ones I bought a 5 out of 5. This new one gets about a 2. It no longer looks stylish and sturdy. Instead it looks like a bookcase from childhood that you outgrew and never replaced with a larger one. Really disappointing. Buyer beware.
