If I could it would probably be 3.5 stars instead of 4 but I rounded up the way we all wish our teacher would have with our grades.
I have owned A LOT of high end audio gear over the years so I know what quality sound is like. I also have heard Bang and Olufsen at its finest with some of their speaker systems and they are sublime and can transport you away with their fidelity and beauty. With all my time with high end gear, I have become both incredibly picky as well as incredibly realistic in what can and can't be done sonically at different price points. I have listened to everything from old $25 Koss PortaPros (that sound remarkably good BTW) to Audeze LCD-4s which are $4,000 (which is quite frankly too much money for a headphone - but does sound phenomenal with some kinds of audio). Sometimes I value faithful sound reproduction and other times I want convenient tunes that may not sound perfect but are 'good enough for government work' as my father used to say.
I'm going to start our with the cons for the Bang and Olufsen H9 because they are few, but important, and I want to end this review on a high note (no pun intended, ok maybe just a little). The first con is the B&O 'sound'. If you have listened to enough headphones you quickly begin to realize that each manufacturer has a certain 'sound' to their products sometime a few different sounds depending on if they have a wide variety of different lines. Some of this is due to construction elements (using wood vs. plastic for the housing, real leather vs protein leather or fabric) or it can be a design element (open vs. closed back, diaphragm design, diaphragm material,) or any of a hundred little design elements that change the way sound eventually gets from your source to your ear drum. It is incredibly complicated but eventually boils down to sound signatures that people either love or hate. And that love or hate is very, very subjective and in many cases makes headphone reviews (such as this one) a very personal one and may not be perceived in the same way by everyone else so please take this with an entire salt lick not not a few grains of salt.
The B&O headphone 'sound' to me as well as to quite a few friends who are also 'phone heads can feel almost 'gauzy' or like something nebulous is just between you and the music. For some music it can make things sound almost etherial while others it can mute or leech some of the punch out of certain frequencies. Again, this is from someone who is looking for the sonic signature of these headphones and if you are not quite as in tune (some may say crazy) to the headphones or your music, or don't really care, then this is not an issue. 95% of purchasers would listen to the H9s and think they are wonderful. They may notice a few differences in some of their favorite songs that don't sound *quite* the way they have heard them before but they will shrug their shoulders and be on their merry way.
The second and final nit-pick really isn't a problem for me because I'm not finding it to be a problem, but if you are buying the H9s for their noise canceling ability, you might find them to be a problem especially if you have experienced the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) features of some other manufacturers. First off, ANC changes the sound signature of any headphone and I have always shied away from them for that particular reason, I cared more about the quality of the sound rather than the noise cancelation feature and for that reason have always preferred passive noise cancellation over active. My favorite headphones for an airplane or train ride are my custom fit in-ear monitors that were built from molds of my ear canal and fit in my ears perfectly and don't let a bit of sound in. These are the type of headphones that musicians wear to monitor their own sound and keep out the blasting sound of the amps all around them. You would be hard pressed to find a better sound/noise cancellation combo in ANY other headphone but you are going to pay for it. They are, and always will be, my 'gold standard'. The other reason that I avoid ANC is they produce a known phenomenon of ear pressure that for some people (such as myself) find maddening. It almost feels like you are constantly coming down from altitude and have some air pressure pushing on your ears that you can never clear. This pressure would seem to be related to the quality of noise cancellation provided by the headphones. The industry leader who shall remain unnamed but you probably know who they are, make headphones that are almost startling in their sound isolation but I can't wear them for more than 10-15 minutes before wanting to rip them off my head due to that eardrum pressure. Many people it doesn't bother or doesn't bother them enough to counter their desire/need for absolute top-of-the-line noise cancellation. The H9s do a good job of noise cancellation from both their active components as well as the passive kind from the supple leather and memory foam of the ear cups. They do not provide top-of-the-line noise canceling but they provide GOOD noise cancelling and do not make me want to rip them off my head. If you are primarily looking for headphones to put you in a noise free bubble, look elsewhere.
Now the good, and there is a lot of good with the H9s. First off, they are beautiful both inside and out. B&O did not skimp on the quality of these headphones. They are solid, well constructed, and meant to last a lifetime. They are very comfortable. I was worried about these because the headband has a lot less padding than I am used to with headphones of this type (and I don't normally worry about headbands with my in-ears) but surprisingly I can wear the H9s for quite some time before they begin to feel uncomfortable. That is mostly due to the shape of my head (think Captain Picard) and the pronounced 'point' I have that makes a lot of headphones of this type uncomfortable for me. The fact that I can go though hours long sittings without these hurting is a serious positive point for me.
The removable battery is another serious positive for me. Many, if not most, of these wireless headphones have sealed batteries and when those go out you are forced to either used them with their cable (defeating the purpose of wireless) or you throw them in the trash and go buy another. Here, when you wear down the battery and that will happen in a few years, you can throw a fresh $40 battery in them and not lose your investment. You can also have an extra one on hand to extend your wireless listening session for an extra-long flight if need be. I have yet to run into the H9s 15 hour run time so I don't need that extra battery now but it is nice to know that these don't have a 'lifetime' to them dictated by the battery.
The controls both on the headphone and on the app are easy to use and not as 'wonky' and many other reviews have made them out to be. Do they use some different gestures than are commonly used, sure both those are dictated a bit by the circular design of outer shell. Those are also made moot if you have the app available or better yet, an Apple Watch like I do and can just control the volume and tracks through my watch. Either way, once you get used to the controls, they really aren't a problem.
OK, bottom line here. These are beautifully constructed, comfortable, headphones that do a good job with noise cancellation and will last you a very long time all while giving you the signature gauzy B&O headphone signature. If you are good with spending $500 for that, then you will be eminently please with the H9s. If you want to change any of those features (price, sound signature, ANC quality, build quality), you can find others out there that would probably make you happier than the H9s. I encourage you to go to your local Best Buy, and try on some of the headphones there and make your choice based on actually trying them on rather than listening solely to my review or others on here. Use us as a guide to figure out which ones you want to listen in store.
BTW, I'm going to check 'No - I would not recommend this to a friend' because I know my friends and they are just as picky as me, but I am being literal with that statement and perhaps not the figurative way that Best Buy intends it to be.

These B&O H9 headphones are AMAZING! They are beautiful to look at, extremely comfortable to wear and sound absolutely fantastic!! They are very lightweight and the ear cups are made of lamb skin so they are extremely soft. They come with a micro usb for charging and a cloth bag for storage.
As for the sound, I am not a techy person, so I can just say the sound blows me away. Very crisp and clear. I could listen with these for hours and hours and be very happy.
They can be used wired or wirelessly and I had no problem pairing them with my iPhone 7. Download the Beoplay app and you’ve got more control.
The controls are on the side of one cup and are done with simple taps and swipes and circular movements for forward/back, pause/play, volume up/down. Very easy to remember. You can answer the phone and transfer the call to your phone. They are noise canceling but they don’t tune everything out completely, but enough, so you can still hear some things and you can turn that feature off if you choose.
The battery is replaceable. That is a great feature and let’s me know I will be enjoying these headphones for a good long time.
Highly recommend!!

This I my review of the Beoplay H9 Wireless Over-the-Ear Noise Canceling Headphones.
These headphones first look great and are very sturdy. They are, however, very light and comfortable fitting and are suitable for wearing for extended periods of time like a long flight. The headband is aluminum wrapped with genuine leather and the replaceable ear cups are also genuine leather, which is why these things are so darn comfortable to wear.
As soon as you remove them from the box you will also see a cord with a 3.5 jack on each end for wired listening even though they are Bluetooth wireless. There is also a short USB cord for charging which takes about 2 hrs. if completely drained and you can get as much as 14 hrs. of use on one charge. Along with those is a flight adaptor for use during a flight. There is a soft bag with a heavy duty closing cord to store everything in, again giving a look of luxury.
There is an instruction manual also in the box that explains how to operate the touch controls which are incorporated into the right earpiece in the metal. The only control that is like most headphones is the on/off switch on the outside of the right earpiece that you slide up and hold to connect via Bluetooth. The instruction manual also guides you to download the B&O app to get started.
The B&O app not only walks you through the setup, but it also has a battery meter showing the amount of power remaining. There is also a series of frequently asked questions that are broken down in steps within the app. What I found most useful is a page in the app that you can use to expand the soundstage and vary the tonal quality of whatever you are listening to; you also could use the 4 presets B&O set up or you have the option to create and save your own.
The sound that the H-9’s generate is very good. I find it to be rich and distinctive with a very strong bass response. One of the first songs I listened to sounded so good that I was hearing instruments playing that I had never heard before. Widening the soundstage seems to increase the stereo effect, especially when listening to a movie or video playback with a soundtrack. It's almost like surround sound. The active noise canceling is effective and can be turned off and on with a simple stroke of the finger up or down on the metal outside of the right earphone. In fact, as I mentioned above, a single touch will pause or restart whatever you are listening to and a circular motion will increase or decrease the volume. One thing I noticed though is that it is sensitive and sometimes when I wanted to turn the volume up or down it would pause at the touch which meant I had to touch it again and then make another attempt. I found it frustrating at times. Plus, my finger tips are not as sensitive as they once were, making it even more challenging. Fortunately, I can use the B&O app or the player (Spotify, Amazon Music, etc.) that I am using to control the volume, etc.
I mentioned that the battery is replaceable. The left ear cup contains a Lithium battery which can be replaced when it no longer will charge. I think the more practical application would be to have a spare battery charged that can be used while the other battery is being charged if you run out of power. I'm not sure what the replacement battery costs.
There is one thing that to me is not a big deal, but to some it may matter. You have to reconnect to a new device each time you switch devices. In other words, earlier I was connected to my computer, and now I am listening to my iPad. I own a set of headphones which will always keep 2 devices ready to connect to as soon as I turn the device and the headphones on. With the H-9's they will reconnect to one device like your phone when you turn them on, but you have to go through the pairing process again if you use something else and come back to the phone.
Now, if catching phone calls is important to you, then you would probably want to stay connected to a phone receiving device like an iPhone and/or an iPad or a MacBook where the calls can be received and shared with another device. When a call comes in you tap the right cup to answer. The microphone is excellent, no need to yell. If you tap the ear cup twice while listening to something, it will redial the last number called. It works well.
Overall, I think the B&O Play H-9's are a superb set of headphones, but I would expect that for the price being charged. You would have to decide for yourself if there are enough positives that outweigh any negatives to justify the investment. I think it is worth it to at least try them, and if you are unhappy return them. I think you will be pleased.

Sometimes you purchase high end products simply because you just want to stand out from the crowd. When the stand out looks are matched by equally perfect performance the expression is simply WOW. The carton of this product is velvety to feel. Packaging is simple and really nice. The sound is what you expect from B&O. I love the headphones . Highly recommended.

The B&O Beoplay H9 is objectively a good headphone, but it simply doesn't deliver the features that a lot of other Active Noise Canceling headphones have at lower prices.
First, build & design. I enjoy the look of the H9—a lot more than I thought I would. This is why B&O is considered a luxury brand, and the H9 has that aesthetic. It doesn't seem bulky and has premium durable materials to let it stand the test of time. Heck, even the smooth sliding mechanism for the headband is nice—it doesn't click unlike many others, so if you're OCD, you might not like that.
Comfort: The H9 is not as comfortable for me as some of my other cans. The lambskin pads are really comfortable, but the headband padding is really hard and causes fatigue at the apex of my scalp—an issue that I'm sure others may encounter, as well. I can probably use these headphones for a couple hours at a time before I absolutely need to take them off. It's unfortunate, as I have more affordable options that I can wear on an international flight without taking them off as often as these.
Sound: At this price, I'd like to see more codecs supported with higher bitrate, but the sound is still pleasant. It is V-shaped, so expect elevated bass and treble, but not overwhelming.
Active Noise Canceling: The H9 simply cannot compete with the likes of the top players. It simply isn't a strong point of the H9. Don't get me wrong, the ANC isn't bad—I've experienced much worse, but it isn't strong enough to compete with the top offerings out there (which are still less expensive). In my office environment, I can hear my office mate speaking decently well. I can't always understand what he's saying, though—it's like a loud mumble, as ironic as that sounds. Additionally, there has been construction going on just outside my door, and the H9 doesn't suppress the sound of drills and other power tools nearly as well as my other noise canceling headphones.
Controls: The touch controls are pretty good and intuitive. I don't like the fact that double tap will redial your latest contact, but aside from that, there is little to complain about. Keep in mind, that the touch controls work with gloves and other materials, so if you have the headphones on and lay down with the touch controls against a pillow or something, it will probably trigger the controls. The controls are only on the right earcup, so this shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Additionally, it should be mentioned that this headphone has a removable battery. If you purchase a secondary battery, you will be able to swap out the battery for another, but it doesn't come with a separate standalone battery charger, so you won't be able to charge your unused battery without putting it into the H9 unless you are able to find a third party charger.
Overall, the H9 has a nice, premium aesthetic, but doesn't deliver the features that I'd expect for the premium price.

The Beoplay H9’s B&O’s new premium wireless headphones. They offer some interesting features, including active noise cancellation, audio adjustments via app, wired or wireless operation and touch sensitive controls.
My experience with headphones is fairly wide range on the lower side of the budget spectrum. I have everything from $20 no-name Bluetooth earbuds, to super-aerial wired Klipsch. What are unique to me about the H9’s is active noise cancellation. I’ve had plenty of noise isolating headphones, which either attempt to use foam or direct contact with the ear canal to seal out other noises. If you’ve never had an active noise cancelling headphone on before, the effects at first are disorienting. Immediately it is quieter than you ever thought possible. Once you get past the disorientation though, you start to appreciate the silence. In fact I found myself putting on the H9’s just to enjoy some quiet time without so much ‘white noise’ around me.
Now, the H9’s are pricey. Retailing for half a grand is quite an ask for many, but rest assure you get a premium product. The construction of the H9’s is amazing. Most moving parts in headphones have a tendency to be made of composite material. The problem with most composites is that they have a tendency to be somewhat brittle over time and crack. I’ve lost a couple good sets of headphones simply because the mechanism has broken. That led me to vmoda cans a few years ago, which are amazing, but somewhat flawed. These make the vmoda look like paper mache. Parts you expect to be plastic are anodized aluminum. I’m not even sure how these were assembled, as even the hinges seem to be milled as one piece. The housing of the speakers themselves are composite, but a type that seems extremely durable. The biggest thing is that no metal appears to attach to plastic, anywhere. So if you are concerned about longevity of this set, don’t worry about it - these are a tank. The headband feels quite solid as well, if just a bit more eclectic than the rest of the headphone’s aesthetic (there is leather sown to the top in one layer, with portions of leather wrapping around and inset fabric).
The H9 also sport one of the best sound quality I’ve heard. They blow the Sony MDR-XB950’s I have out of the water (seriously back to back listening was laughably bad). The sound is crisp, clear, and dynamic. Bass is offered up in loads without sacrificing highs. Bass notes flow, and never boom. Mid’s are also quite crisp. I’d still lump the H9’s in with headphones that follow a ‘power’ curve instead of being neutral. That said, these are no Beats. Subtle details of songs, textures of drums, faint percussion or chimes stand out. Bluetooth audio is the best I’ve heard on any set. There are definitely points where the wire help, but for all but the most picky listeners these are a great Bluetooth set. The soundstage (or sense of depth) is narrow, but such is life in the world of cans (closed back headphones). If you try a nice set of open backed headphones, you’ll know what I’m talking about, but I can’t fault a semi-compact set of cans for having an audio profile of cans.
The touch controls are hard to get at first. It’s easy to make a joke that the volume control makes you look like you’re calling someone coo-coo (you circle your ear), but in all reality controlling it is a subtle art. I’ve been using them for over a week now and are still getting the hang of it. Play pause is pretty easy (just a tap), and volume just takes an understanding of where the sensor edges are. It could be a bit clearer, but you get used to it.
The right ear includes most of the controls and ports. These consist of a on off switch with a Bluetooth moment toggle for turning the Bluetooth on and pairing. Ostensibly if you use the headphones with a wire, you could just use the switch to turn on the noise cancellation and keep Bluetooth off. The headphones charge with micro-usb located under the toggle switch. Further under that near the bottom of the can is the 3.5 mm headphone jack. While on the chopping block of 2017 phone designers, this still offers the best sound quality and the ability to bring your own amplifier. The built in microphone seems quite good to those I’ve talked to, so no concerns there.
Interestingly, on the left can you’ll find a switch that will release a removable battery. Inside you find a 750mah li-ion battery which keeps the headphones powered like a champ. I’ve listened for a few days now (admittedly a couple hours here and there) without needing a charge and they’re not even down to 65%. A removable battery is definitely counter cultural these days, but I can appreciate it. It’s unobtrusive and honestly adds to the longevity of the headphones (a non-removable might call it quits after a few years, while this most likely is a 20 spot away from having a brand new battery without any disassembly).
Comfort wise, these are very comfortable. Not quite as luxurious as some I’ve owned, but the important thing is that they are relatively compact and offer this level of comfort. While these are full sized headphones they’re not as large as the aforementioned sony model I have as well.
All in all I can appreciate the B&O H9’s for their focus on not just providing a great sonic experience today, but also 10 years from now. While pricy, they make their case by being non-disposable, durable, and maintainable. Their audio quality can probably be matched by cheaper headphones, but their build quality is several levels beyond what I’ve experienced. The biggest criticism I can leverage is the lack of a hard case (such as what my vmoda came with). I suppose you could say a tank doesn’t need more armor, but I doubt most $500 headset owners want to risk throwing these in a bag 365 days a year. It does come with a double lined soft cloth bag with a elastic tie.
If you’re looking for an amazing set of wireless headphones and have the pocket-change for these, go for them. They’re a great set of ANC cans that will last you for years to come.

Amazing Sound and Noise Canceling at a price

It's apparent from the moment you slip the wrapper off the box that these are meant to be B&Os flagship headphones in the Beoplay line. I actually expected just a little more out of the box... but that serves no real function other than to deliver you the headphones.
The build is exceptional, with a tight feel to assembly and the plastics, fabric and leather combining in a very plush feel. I love that the oversized ear cups are removable for both cleaning and replacement. The new fad of having the L and R silkscreened into the cups is not lost on me either, especially when touch controls come into play on these headphones and it's only on one side. Ear tension was adjustable with the headband and I was easily able to find a comfortable position. the cups themselves cradle your ears and are made of soft supple leather.
Also a plus, and showing that they have a mind towards long term ownership, is the removable battery pack, one feature that sets these apart from their competitors. Speaking of competitors, I line these up with other B&O headphones and the Bose Quiet Comfort 35s, which make them a little hard to compare with vastly varying differences in features and price ranges, but all having wonderfully working noise cancelling.
Noise cancelling on these works amazing, and you are always shocked at the amount of ambient noise that is being canceled/filtered when you take them off.
The controls are where this particular pair of headphones get a little wonky, and B&O tried something new/borrowed from another pair in their line. The outside of the right ear is a flat surface that is essentially a touch pad. one tap to pause or play, swipe up or down to turn off noise canceling, old school ipod clickwheel spins on the ear cup result in vol up or down. I found this scheme infuriating to no end, and the only detractor to keep me from rating these at 5 stars. It was unresponsive and annoying. I was aching for a manual volume control and often resorted to my phone to do just that.
Sound quality is difficult to put up against any other pair of headphones. Clarity and cleanliness as well as full range were all apparent and amazing. I've seen some other reviews that found the H9s sound quality to be muted or overlaid, but I think that may have something to do with the kind of music they were listening to and perhaps they were simply surprised at what the music ACTUALLY sounded like. I tried these in both wired and wireless modes, with and without noise cancelling and I enjoyed the sound in all settings.
Overall I love the quality of these phones, noise cancelling and bluetooth wireless are top notch. The value is lacking a little bit in the price and the touch control scheme are going to scare some buyers away and would make me caution anyone to really familiarize yourself with them before purchasing. Once you do, however, you'll be extremely pleased.

Where Headphones meet Luxury

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Pros:
-Well-built with luxurious look and feel - memory foam ear pads wrapped in luxurious lambskin make for a very comfortable wear
-Sleek aluminum and leather accents and minimalist design
-Left and right stereo channels are marked by large “L” and “R” symbols inside each earphone - very helpful, no need to look for a tiny "L" or "R" indicator like on most other headphones
-A removable lithium-ion battery is located on the bottom of the left earcup - you can replace it as you like
-Pairing with the headphones is fast and easy. Move the power switch on the bottom of the right earphone up towards the Bluetooth symbol, wait for the LED to flash blue, and find it in your device’s Bluetooth menu to pair
-Dedicated smartphone app available to fully utilize the headphones
-Ideal for casual, work, or travel use
-Noise canceling
-Built-in microphone
Cons:
-If you are a colorful person, you may be out of luck as currently the headphones only come in 2 colors (black and brownish gray)
-Price tag can be intimidating
-While battery life is good (see below in Notes section), it is slightly lower than similar models of competitors' headphones
-Not made for athletic use
-No multipoint Bluetooth pairing, which means you’ll have to manually pair and unpair the headphones with every device you use
-Touchpad mentioned below in notes can be quirky (slow to respond or interprets your movement incorrectly). I compare it to a lot of the touchscreen infotainment centers you see it in cars nowadays.
-I think audiophiles will be disappointed with the sound quality, it is good but not exceptional.
-I wouldn't give this to someone who is not technically savvy (like a parent or senior citizen) as the the touchpad can be hard for them to use
Notes:
-Sliding power switch and small LED on the bottom of the right earphone, next to the micro USB charging port and 3.5 mm cable input
-Externally, there are no buttons on the headphones. Playback, noise canceling, and volume are all controlled via the right earcup’s touchpad.
-For optimum use, a smartphone is recommended
-Battery life:
Up to 14 hours with Bluetooth and Noise Canceling
Up to 16 hours with Bluetooth

Let me start by saying, I've always lusted after B&O gear. It doesn't just sound amazing, it has a sexiness to it as well. Everything has just the right look and just the right feel.
When I was approached with the opportunity to audition their latest test of noise cancelling headphones, I jumped at the chance. I'm not an audiophile - I enjoy music for the overall experience.
In typical B&O fashion, these look at feel awesome. The build quality is top notch. The ear pieces are covered in leather and have nice thick memory foam creating an excellent, comfortable fit. The headpiece adjusts easily, without any preset detents. It just slides effortlessly and holds the position once set. There aren't any odd pieces of material or leftover threads - just excellence in design and craftsmanship.
Bluetooth pairing with my iPhone was effortless - as expected.
Let's talk about sound quality. I've been a hold out against noise cancelling headphones as like to be aware of what's happening around me. I can forego degradation in music quality in favor of that. That all changed once I tried these. They do such an amazing job filtering out ambient noise, I'm able to forget all that's happening around me. Maybe not the best walking on the streets of Chicago, but it's perfect for the train.
I played a number of songs and all were just delightful to listen to. The lows were extremely pronounced, without being muddy. A kick drum sounded like a kick drum. Other manufacturers seemingly add low end and it seems to change the sound of the music. I have a frequency generator app on my phone and was able to hear/feel down to 18Hz - which is quite impressive. Midrange frequencies were nice and balanced - vocals were extremely clear. High frequencies were also very balanced without being harsh.
My favorite part of these is the controls on the headphones. They use gesture control - which I didn't think I'd use because most other manufacturers aren't intuitive. The H9s work exactly as expected. Fast forward a song - swipe forward. Repeat a song - swipe back. Turn the volume up - swipe clockwise. Turn the volume down - swipe counterclockwise.
I've worn these everyday for the last week and absolutely love them. The noise reduction works so well, when you disable it, it's as if B&O is piping the sound in, but they're not. It's just that noisy in the world around us.
