Magnificent Sound and Touch/Gesture Controls!

The Beoplay H9 headphones by Bang & Olufsen are nothing short of amazing. The sound is even throughout the whole audible spectrum with strong bass and sparkling highs. All the music I have listened to has had such strength and clarity and presence that it was startling.
But Bang & Olufsen took things even further by designing the exterior of the right headphone so that all functional commands are controlled by touch/gesture. Power and bluetooth are controlled using a traditional (physical) switch; starting, stopping, volume up and down, track forward and reverse, phone answering and release, and active noise cancellation are all controlled by intuitive swiping. Alas, like so many other things, these headphones are right-handed - the left headphone is not touch-sensitive.
The headphones can also be used with a mini-jack cable if you want to connect to a source without using bluetooth (or if the batteries are low on the headphones). A shortish mini-jack cable is included along with an adapter for airplane use.
Surely the noise-canceling feature of the headphones is very desirable for people who fly. Bang & Olufsen did a great job with physical isolation from external noise with soft padding on the earpieces and with the active noise canceling (ANC) feature which removes a lot of external sounds electronically from the music you hear. I used a vacuum to check the difference in sound with the ANC on/off and neglected to switch-off the vacuum because I forgot it was running.
Flawless sound combined with isolation from external noise can add a sense of intimacy with your music (e.g. in some of my recordings of piano music, you can actually hear the sound of the physical movement of the damper pedal - insane). But it can also point out recording or digitalization flaws and problems with equalization (e.g. some pop music is equalized with increased bass and treble and might sound OK on a dance floor with thumping bass but in these headphones, the missing midrange makes it sound hollow and artificial - FYI).
The only complaints I have are superficial: (1) the headphones come with a nice soft carrying pouch which would do little to protect them in a backpack or if they were dropped - I would prefer more substantial protection for this investment, & (2) I wish the shape of the earpieces was slightly more oval (not perfectly circular) - I think a longer earpiece would be a little more comfortable (but that might affect the the physical noise isolation).
Bose headphones with noise-canceling technology were always the ones to beat and these Beoplay H9 headphones by Bang & Olufsen outperform the Bose in every way. These are stellar.

Fantastic High-End Headphones

These high-end B&O headphones impress from the moment you unbox them and never let up.
Starting out, the B&O H9 headphones are highly attractive, solidly built, and exceedingly comfortable. I've tried other high-end headphones, all of which eventually hurt the top of my head after wearing for a while. These never because uncomfortable to me.
Overall performance is equally impressive. Long battery life, fantastic sound, and noise cancellation all make these a great choice for any situation.
The touch gestures are the only point that are a bit of blessing and curse. There is great functionality built into various swipes to the right-hand can: Volume up and down, next or last, play and stop. The only down side is, its very easy to trigger some of the gestures just putting on or taking off the headset.

For the price I don't like this headphone. B&O sound signature is not what I like. When I bought this new it is around 500 to 600. It looks cool and it feels cool. The material use on the headphone and the carry bad is top quality but I just don't like the sound. It has horrible micrphone as well.

These B&O’s headphones make a clear luxury statement; that they are cut above the rest.
The B&O Play Headphones by Bang and Olufsen are some really nice headphones. The most difficult and frustrated part about the headphones is saying the name, lol, therefore I refer to them as the B&O’s. Everything else relating to these headphones are smooth sailing; once you’re able to pronounce the name or begin using the short B&O version. The B&O’s are presented to you in premium packaging. Everything within the box is easy to locate and items seemed to be where they “are supposed” to be which makes removing and replacing items easy. Everything about the B&O’s from the box and other packaging to the unit itself screams Quality. One thing that was not mentioned in the description of what’s included is that they provide a nice carrying bag that looks eloquent and classy. All of the included accessories match nicely and it is clear that everything goes together. Everything you need is included (charging cable, audio cable, conversion adapters, carrying bag, etc.). It is quite evident that B&O cut no corners when making these headphones and it shows.
All of the controls are on one side of the headphones (the right side speaker) and you can control full functions with taps and motions (which is very responsive). You are able to download an easy start up app. for connecting your headphones via bluetooth; however, I didn’t find that it was necessary considering the easy to read instructions. B&O provides easy to read instructions with logical gestures to make your listening experience easier. The app, which is free to download is useful, but it would be great if you could see what was playing on your headphones via the app. The sound is great, I just wish that I had the option of increasing the sound to make the headphones a little louder. The sound volume is decent and if I had to rate it, I would give it an 8 out of 10. However, B&O has the BEST Noise Canceling I’ve had on headphones. You can see the noise canceling difference by just putting them on; even when you’re not listening to music. You’re able to listen to your sounds with or without ANC (noise canceling) and if the battery runs down, you can still listen to music without a charge and if you decide to charge them, you are able to listen to your sounds while charging. The headphones have easy to understand LED lights, but I wasn’t able to see a battery percentage view so I am not sure how long the charge lasts and how much charge my headphones actually have left. The bluetooth range is standard, but consistent. Another great feature is that it comes with a removable battery; which is a first for headphones of this caliber. They are a comfortable fit with soft cushions, they adjusts easily and quickly with little effort. The headphones are made of quality materials including the metal and cushions. I mean the B&O’s looks great with a combination of Black, Titanium and Smoke Gray. When wearing the B&O’s, you make a clear statement that you are representing the finer things of life and a cut above the rest. The B&O’s H9’s is Luxury at its best.

Great headphones for some study or alone time

These headphones really do a great job of separating yourself from your surroundings. They have some great sound, for sure above average but not as good as some really high end headphones.
They fit nicely over the head and have a little weight to them to help them stay in place, but that can be a curse sometimes. For instance, wearing them around the house doing chores they can start to move if you bend over and etc. The most ideal setting is when you are just wanting to sit and read, study, or travel.
The touch controls are very handy and pretty responsive too. It takes a little bit to get used to especially the fact that the controls only work on the very inside of the right ear. I find myself wanting to swipe around the edge of the hard shell to turn volume up and down, but it's only the inner circle that is sensitive.
The noise cancellation is superb, you absolutely feel separated from the rest of the world. Sitting in a moderately busy coffee shop I didn't hear anyone around me.
Battery life has been pretty close to the as advertised life, I have only charged it a couple of times so far and I don't really worry about it dying on me while out and about.
They also have a ability to answer calls and it really does a great job of picking up your voice and people on the other end have no idea that you are talking to them through another device.

Beutiful Build Quality with Balanced Sound

As with all B&O products the aesthetics and build quality are the first things noted. These H9s are no exception. The overall design is simplistic and sleek. Lambskin, aluminum, cow leather and premium fit and finish together serve to ensure the H9s are of premium quality and glorious to behold.
Sound/music reproduction was well balanced with bass being reproduced with the appropriate amount of “punch” relative to mids and highs. Overall, I would characterize the H9s as mellow; a good thing as far as I am concerned. No need to worry about bright highs or muddy overpowering mids drowning out other components of your music.
To push the H9s I listened to a number of my classical music albums and was thoroughly impressed with the H9’s ability to maintain the separation of instruments and nuances of orchestral works. Current pop music selections sounded exceptional with the H9’s bass capabilities clearly demonstrated.
Overall, the H9s are a high quality set of headphones. The H9’s face some stiff competition at this price point but are definitely worth a listen.

Really Nice Headphones

These are really nice headphones. They look nice, and the fit was good, not too tight. The earphones and headband are soft and light, you can wear them for long periods. My current set of noise cancelling headphones is an old Bose 3 set. The B&O really blow the older headphones away. The noise cancelling was superb, didn't feel any pressure or hear any hissing when it's turned on.
Using them isn't hard to get used too. Once connected by Bluetooth, the right ear piece has the controls on it. Just laying a finger on the metal and making the appropriate motion can play/pause, select the next/previous song, adjust volume, turn noise cancelling on/off and pick up phone calls. The motions are intuitive, I was using the motions quickly and the headphones always correctly received the inputs. Without Bluetooth (plugged in), you can still use noise cancelling.
The app lets you see the current status of the headphones in a nice layout. The battery charge, noise cancelling setting, volume, and play/pause/next/previous are all available here. Also, if firmware updates come out later, the app will update the headphones.
The headphones come with a soft plush case/bag, a 3.5mm male to male jack, a plane adapter, and USB cord for charging. The USB cord is really short, only one foot, but it uses a standard USB micro port, so any micro cable will do. The box it comes in is nice and makes a good opening presentation.
The sound is not muffled and clear. Highs and lows were good. Excellent sound quality with a variety of different music styles. You can set the type of sound characteristics in the app by 4 presets (warm, excited, relaxed, and bright), or set your own. The adjustments are slight, but can set the tone to your personal preference for listening.
I had one issue which was easy to remedy. When I got the headphones, the Bluetooth and noise cancelling didn’t work, and I couldn’t get them to charge. I popped open the battery case and figured out the battery was a little lose. The metal “springs” on the battery door that put pressure on the battery were to flat. I pried them up a bit and this added enough pressure to keep the battery on place. Once that was done, they worked perfectly, so if you have a power issue, check the battery compartment.
Overall the headphones look and sound great. The noise cancelling and headphones are not fatiguing. The touch controls are nice and easy to learn. They are expensive, but you get some nice features in addition to the sound for the money.

very comfortable, high end headphones

First off, you can tell right away that these are high end headphones. Lets get to it.
In the box: The box is well designed, and has the high end feel that it should. There are the headphones, a soft carrying bag, a USB cable, and 3.5mm cable, and a 2 prong airline adapter. I LOVE the airline adapter, as the next time I fly I'll be able to use these headphones rather than the airline supplied headphones. The supplied USB cable for charging is very short though, around 8 inches. I use a different cable to charge. I wish it came with a hard case rather than a bag for more protection though.
Quality: Very high end. Super soft ear cups, soft head band, and metal construction. Has very nice feel, and feels like it will last for a while.
Features: Active Noise Cancellation. It is noticeable, but only reduces outside noise it does not completely "erase" it. You are able to turn it on and off, in both bluetooth and wired mode. The right headphone has a touch sensitive metal plate with controls music and phone calls. Tap to play and pause, swipe to skip or go backwards with songs. Swipe up and down to turn on/off ANC, spin in a circle to adjust volume. It works about 90% of the time, and seems a little glitchy at times, but over all works well. You can answer a phone call while wearing the headphones, and I was told that I am able to be heard, but sound like I'm on speakerphone. You can swipe forward on the headphone control to transfer the call to your phone and take off the headphone. Battery life is acceptable for a wireless headphone.
Cons: The on/off switch is confusing. You use it to turn on or off the ANC when in wired mode, but you have to go "past" the on position for amount to turn on bluetooth to use it wirelessly. You can also use the gestures to turn on/off ANC, So I'm not sure why they made it a multi-function switch like this. They don't fold up, so they are a bit bigger to transport with you. Like I said, there is no hard case included, just a bag.
Overall: they are very comfortable, and the top of my head does not hurt when wearing them. I love that they are infinitely adjustable, rather than with "clicks" for head size.

The sound quality and construction on these are second to none. I've tried many on-ear and over-the-ear headphones and these are the best out there. The clearest and sharpest listening that I've experienced. Very clean and professional looking and very comfortable. Can easily be worn for hours without any issues (planes, work, etc.). They can be connected via bluetooth (with decent battery life) or with the supplied cord. You won't be disappointed!

Opening the box on these B&O's, you immediately recognize they're something special. I was first drawn to the look of the leather. Run your fingers over the plush memory foam and you know they're going to feel good. And that they do.
I'll put it out there that I'm a vinyl guy. A high end vinyl guy. The first time i put these over my head with the noise cancellation turned on, it sort of set an atmosphere. A bit difficult to explain, but while i had Heart's "Crazy on you" cued on the turntable, I pulled it off. I wanted to listen to Petty's "Wildflowers" instead; something i could be immersed in without any outside distraction.
For those of you audiophile vinyl fans out there, you know the subtle difference between various pressings/masterings of a particular recording. Some round out the sound for a softer listening experience; others focus on crispness & immediacy. Maybe it's a psychological effect that the comfort of this headset had on me, but I wanted to hear things conducive to closing your eyes, relaxing, and being absorbed into the music. I've tried high end Bose & Audio Technica, and i can't really say that the overall sound is better. Yes, they all have their own "flavor", and that's a very subjective thing. But i can definitively say that these were the most comfortable.
One thing that stood out to me is that the battery is replaceable; and that's not the case with other high end phones. A dead or weak battery is either an end of life experience, or cause to send it back to the manufacturer for replacement. This makes a statement that this headset is built to last and not a throwaway. That's what you want to see at this price point.
I'm not crazy about the touch controls - swipe up/down for noise cancellation; circular motion to raise/lower volume, the only one i'm really comfortable with is the simple tap to mute. Then again, i'm old school, and was always more comfortable with a mouse than a touchpad. My children would have a different opinion.
The way i look at these is, if you're willing to spend this much on a set of headphones; well, let me put it this way. I'll put a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, and a Bentley in front of you. They all go 0-60 in 3 seconds. Which one do you want? The B&O's are the Bentley with the seats you sink into. Good choice.

Fantastic Build Quality, But...

These are very nice looking headphones. The build quality is fantastic. They are very stylish, and are the most comfortable set of headphones I've tried on to date, with or without glasses. I personally love touch controls, but the controls on the H9's could use some refining. They can be a bit quirky. When pausing and playing music, there is an odd delay. On a couple occasions I started a phone call with the last person I talked to by double tapping the touch pad thinking the first tap didn't register. Skipping tracks is a gamble too. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There is an app you can download to control the pause/play/track function, noise canceling, and even try to fine tune the headphones with B&O's version of an EQ.
Now onto the sound part, and this is why I had to subtract one star. Let's keep in mind that this is a $500 set of headphones. The H9's have to much "boomy" bass. It's not tight, it doesn't hit hard. It's just "boomy", muddy if you will, and bleeds into the midrange. If B&O had a better EQ feature in their app, you might be able to tune them better. A circle with an option to point it to "WARM, EXCITED, RELAXED, or BRIGHT", just doesn't cut it for me.
Now for the noise canceling. I had to make sure I had this feature enabled via the app because it didn't work as I expected. It does cut a little bit of background noise out, but I could still hear plenty of background noise. I'm my past experience, other headphones I tested would completely block out background noise, with and option to adjust just how much noise canceling you want. The H9's must be setup to have just a medium level of noise canceling with no way to adjust otherwise. This is why I subtracted another star.
Again, keep in mind this is a $500 set of headphones. I've tested headphones around half the price with better sound and noise canceling.
