Not for every head, but could be perfect for you.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After my original AirPods lost their ability to hold a meaningful charge over three years of heavy daily use (to be expected, naturally), I decided to pivot away from the ultra convenience of truly wireless earphones to something that would have far more longevity, better sound, with many of the H1 chip + ANC/Transparency mode, portability benefits the current AirPods Pro offer. That brought me to the one and only Beats Solo Pro. I already happily own a pair of Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 for a variety of reasons like longer listening sessions, though we’ll see how happily once Apple announces their long-awaited over-ears in the comings days or months. Important to note I was able to snag the Solo Pro for almost half off their original $300 asking price. They are certainly more of a value below $200. LOOK: As is true with Beats cans, these carry on and amplify the tradition of being a fashion statement. I chose the Gray colorway, or more accurately the Gray colorway chose me. The combination of copper gold + earthy gray hypnotized me. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. Reminded me of a Yeezy color swatch. You can definitely sport these in ways you could never do with other bland, generic, awkward-looking headphones. I would get an iPhone that matched this colorway. Build quality on these is excellent too. COMFORT: I’ll briefly echo what others have said here. It’s true; the Solo Pro have a strong clamping force. I definitely could not wear these and watch a film all the through without taking a short break. They did feel much better after a couple of weeks of use, but I still favor them for shorter, more portable listening sessions. I would say you’ll need the full return period to tell if they’re too tight for you. Don’t go off the first couple days to determine the fit. They do, however, work well for workouts like HIIT and weight training. I find the clamping force is like wearing Nike compression on your head. It helps my workouts. I wipe them down after each workout with baby wipes to keep them fresh. As my first ever pair of on-ears, they come with some sacrifices in comfort, but that surprisingly strengthens their use case. SOUND: Though I wouldn’t say these have a wide soundstage, they do deliver that low bass rumble often found with the best headphones in the market. The rumble you might feel when listening to the “2049” track from the Blade Runner 2049 or “Recognizer” from Tron:Legacy or “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. The bass is not overdone on these at all. The sound signature is balanced, but you do get a micro sub woofer effect for quality tracks that have been mixed well. The sound quality works for my tastes. I listen to mostly synth heavy electronic, classical music, some rock. But let’s be honest, virtually all of us are listening to compressed audio. We are not getting the whole sound, thus I don’t suspect it’s fair to compare these to true audiophile headphones listening to lossless or near lossless tracks via other means. I think as bandwidth and storage constraints loosen, the streaming services will unlock lossless streaming, then things will get interesting. Not enough people use services like Tidal, or more accurately, use them correctly to experience the audio quality benefits. ANC/TRANSPARENCY: The ANC on these is solid. They block out and automatically adjust to your surroundings. I think the Bose 700 still has the best ANC I’ve ever tried, but the Bose 700 made me dizzy, gave me an instant headache with a scoop of nausea. The Solo Pro did none of this to me. Thus, it wins. I also don’t know how I feel about ANC that automatically adjusts based on your surroundings versus ANC that you manually adjust on your own. I own cans that do both and like both setups. The Solo Pro transparency mode may be the best in the industry. I especially like it for phone calls since it pumps in a bit of your voice to make it feel like you’re not wearing headphones. I’m unsure if transparency mode + phone call still blocks unwanted ambient noise for the person on the other end of the call. In my limited testing, I think it does, which is great. INTERFACE: Not the biggest fan of the tactile click pressure for the center “b” button. My BeatsX nailed the perfect click pressure. The Powerbeats Pro also nailed it when I tried those at the Apple Store. But, sometimes I press and miss the sweet spot on the Solo Pro. It requires more pressure than it should. Triple clicking is a chore. Can we eliminate triple clicks or at least make it a true triple click that actually goes to the previous track rather than restarts the track you’re on? The directional left and right clicks are unused here, and they shouldn’t be. Would’ve also been great to have playback controls on both ear cups, especially at this retail price. Volume up and down work, but you also need to make sure you are pressing true up and true down, otherwise it results in missing the mark. The click is loud too. “Hey Siri” is the star of the show for simple commands, and often works well, especially when my hands are unavailable to switch between ANC/Transparency modes, etc. If the kitchen sink is running (or some other ambient noise is strong enough), it can sometimes block “Hey Siri” from activating, otherwise it just works. I am digging the folding mechanism that acts as the on/off. Even bending one arm breaks the power circuit and allows them to rest turned off in a pleasing way. They power on quickly and connect by the time I’ve placed them back on my dome. We’ll see how long this lasts over the years, but I’m certain Apple has tested these over thousands of folds for durability/reliability. It’s nice to just look at them and know whether or not they are powered. Resting around your neck they do drain, but I’ve heard they’ll enter a low power mode if nothing is streaming through them. Sometimes, I’ll double click the mode button to turn off the ANC stuff for extra power conservation before I rest them around my neck. BATTERY: Incredible, long battery life. They sip power. All the efficiency gains provided by the H1 chip are the real deal. Plus, you can turn off the ANC/Transparency with a double press of the mode button on the bottom of the left ear cup to double the battery for those times when you don’t need all the bells and whistles or need to stretch your session. CONNECTIVITY: The two devices I most often connect my Solo Pro to still have Bluetooth 4.2, and yet I experience incredible signal range and quality. I have put these through the rigors and have to really push it through twists, turns, distance and thick walls to ding these. They are outstanding. Many people don’t know this, but any W1/H1 eqipped headphone from Apple or Beats has a simultaneous pairing function too, but it only applies to the iPhone-Apple Watch relay. In all other instances, one must manually select which device to use. What’s nice now with Siri Shortcuts is that you can create a shortcut that will connect any W1/H1 headphones using Siri or tapping the Shortcut. This is my first pair of headphones with the new H1 chip. I’ve noticed it connects far faster than the W1 chip does during device swaps. What used to take 3-4 seconds has been reduced to about 1 second. This matters to those of us who constantly hop to different devices. CONCLUSION: If you’re looking for an AirPods Pro experience in an on-ear design and you can either live with some clamping force or you know your use cases will be limited, the Solo Pro are good buy, especially now that they seem to be perpetually on sale. $300, despite superior build quality was way too much. The Solo Pro has its shortcomings, but the total package fits my particular needs. They are a better overall value than AirPods too, if you can live without the AirPods Pro killer ultra convenience feature. I think the Solo Pro, for the right person with the right use cases, can be their all-in-one headphones.
