Do noise cancelling headphones really exist?

The salesman showed me several brands (including some very expensive ones - but he wasn't pushing the higher priced ones) and none of them really did what I thought they would do unless you turn them up really loud. So, as far as noise cancelling headphones go, these worked as well as any of them.
