Maybe this part isn't engineered for my situation. The Apple branded headphone adapter has excellent audio in this same situation (but doesn't charge the phone).

The length makes it difficult to stash the phone in typical places in the car and the cord tends to bend at the base with regular use, making me wonder when it’s going to snap or fray. A bit expensive for all of the negatives.
