Burns Bread

I don't know what type of bread others put in, but I use standard bread from the market, and when I turn the dial higher than 1 then my toast burns. Also, the inside half cooks faster than the outside half. A toaster should cook evenly. Also, there is a burning smell throughout my house due to the toaster.
