I’d recommend running it in a ventilated space and don’t put bread in until it no longer gives off the smell! It took me like 4-5 times. I mostly use it to toast bagels and have noticed anything higher than the 2 setting will start to burn. It also toasts inconsistently so some areas of the bagel (or bread) get much darker than the others - which is why the highest setting I use is 2. I’m disappointed in the purchase but am outside the return window. I wouldn’t recommend this toaster or buy it again.
