Blade Runner (which, coincidentally, takes place in what is now the very near future) is an ambitious sci-fi film which delves into the meaning of humanity in the context of a story of a "blade runner" whose job it is to find and destroy human-like robots known as replicants who have infiltrated earth. Its world is realized in amazing detail, and the film is suspenseful and full of shots and moments that will make deep impressions. The plot and characterizations are solid but somewhat take a back seat to the creation of the world, along with an overall scenario designed to provoke thought. This isn't a popcorn movie and Harrison Ford's performance is quite different from his then just-completed Star Wars and Indiana Jones roles. I don't have clear memories of the older cuts, but the Final Cut presented here holds together well and feels like a cohesive whole, even as it resists explicit messages and a conclusive ending. The 4K presentation is quite good overall. Obviously given the age it's not as sharp or clean as something like Planet Earth II, but for the most part it's quite sharp and shows beautiful detail. The grain can get pretty heavy at times, especially in foggy shots, but I found it tolerable even at its worst, and most of the time it wasn't a distraction at all. I also noticed a number of soft shots, presumably due to camera focus. The HDR is fairly subtle a lot of the time, but shows off bright colors and lights when appropriate. If I wanted to show someone one demo of 4K, it wouldn't be this, but it does seem like a good demo of what 4K can do with an older, 35mm film (I don't have others to compare to when I say this).

Being a movie from the 1980s, and shot on film, be prepared for some film grain in the image. You won't see the ultra-pristine look of many films which are shot digitally, but this is a noticeable upgrade from earlier incarnations. The Atmos soundtrack (or 7.1 if you don't have Atmos) is the best I've ever heard Bladerunner sound. It's amazing that the soundtrack of a movie originally released in 2 channel can be re-mixed to all these discrete channels so superlatively. The live-action footage was scanned in 4K and the optical special effects sequences were mastered in 8K and then scaled down to 4K. Knowing this, you may notice that the film grain on the special effects footage is slightly less apparent than in the rest of the film. Now I want ALL 4K blurays mastered in 8K and down-converted! The set also includes regular bluray discs of a couple of other versions, including the original theatrically released version. If you are a Bladerunner fan, this is the best version you will find!

Great HDR in this one, a very welcome improvement to the standard blu-rays of old.

This is a great movie and is a must for your collection. Highly recommend.

Older movies can be a mixed bag when it comes to looking ok in 4k. Close Encounters looks fairly grainy and even Starship Troopers shows its age, but Blade Runner was made for 4k. The definitive edition of this film looks absolutely stunning in UHD HDR and the effects hold up extremely well. I had a bit of confusion with my copy as the discs I received were the 4k movie, a disc labeled Disc 1 that was the Blu-ray version of the movie, and then 2 DVDs labeled Disc 3 and Disc 4 that had special features. I wondered where Disc 2 was, especially after looking at unboxing videos of this set and seeing others received Disc 2, which is a Blu-ray containing alternate versions of the film, but not Disc 4. I contacted Warner Brothers and within minutes they told me I had the correct discs and the other earlier released discs contained the wrong discs. Just and FYI for those that purchase this and wonder if they're missing something.
