An incredible purifier lacking one basic feature

I live near a busy road and have had several air purifiers through the years to try and keep the air circulating in my house as clean and fresh as possible. The majority of those that I’ve used in the past have been manufactured by Honeywell, and I had not previously heard of Blueair. If you’re in the same boat and the brand Blueair is unfamiliar to you, don’t be deterred because this unit is about as good as purifiers get.
Given the size of the unit, and its coverage square footage wise, I opted to plant this thing right in my home office which is a smaller-sized room. It looks so much more modern and far less utilitarian than the two Honeywell purifiers I have in other rooms, and ties together nicely with the rest of my furniture. It’s slightly taller but about the same circumference as a small trashcan. The whole base of the unit comprises the replaceable filter and cover (which is machine washable), while the top of the unit houses all the touch controls.
Of course, this unit has all the basic fan speed adjustments you’d find on other purifiers. But what sets this apart from others I’ve used and currently own is the phone app integration. Using the Blueair companion app, you can add the purifier to your account and control all the functionality of the unit from your phone. In addition to all the basic features you can also set custom schedules for the unit to automatically turn on or shut off, and you can set up a geofencing feature that turns the unit on or off when you arrive or leave home. Plus, it has a really cool graph to show you your air quality history (it’s a little underwhelming if your air is always pure and blue, but hey, that means it’s doing its job then!).
The unit itself has an LED indicator that will change colors depending on the air quality detected, with blue being the cleanest and red indicating polluted air. I could visually see it working as it turned from yellow to red a few moments after blowing out a candle in the room, creating a small amount of smoke from the wick.
A feature that’s on here that I haven’t seen on other units is the night mode which essentially turns this thing on the lowest fan setting and is virtually silent. My Honeywell does have an “auto” fan feature that will get fairly quiet, so long as no major pollutants kick that fan speed up, but for that reason, it’s not comparable to the night mode on the Blueair… especially when the Blueair also includes an “auto” fan feature.
One pretty big omission to me is that there’s no simple way to set a sleep timer for the unit. I don’t like my purifier constantly running especially if I’ve left the room, so I regularly set a 2 to 4-hour sleep timer on my Honeywell units to ensure they turn off after an appropriate amount of time. While the Blueair does let you set schedules and set up geofencing for location, that doesn’t help much for day-to-day use if you aren’t on a set schedule or aren’t leaving home.
Pros:
- It’s paired with an awesome smartphone app with basic and advanced features including scheduling, geofencing, and providing air quality data.
- It’s very modern looking and isn’t an eyesore.
- The night mode feature of the unit is extremely quiet.
- This unit can capture airborne particles down to 0.1 microns while the various Honeywells I own only capture down to 0.3 microns, so you know this thing is packing a punch.
Cons:
- There is no sleep timer on this unit, though you can set up recurring schedules.
Overall, this is a solid unit to pick up if you’re in the market for an exceptional small-room air purifier with all the bells and whistles. It looks good and keeps your house fresh. The only complaint I have is that I wish it had a basic sleep timer function. I would rate this 4.5 stars if I could, but since I can’t (and given my slight annoyance with the lack of a sleep timer), I’m rating this unit 4 stars. But let me say, those four stars exceed any rating I’d give my Honeywell purifiers I own because the Blueair is just flat-out better: it cleans better, it looks better, and it has smart features I haven’t seen on other purifiers. Just add a sleep timer and it’s the perfect unit.

Great Air Purifier for Small to Mid-Size Rooms

Having not owned any air purifiers since the sharper image ion filter purifier craze of the 90s, I was skeptical of the Blueair filter. Would it be effective? Would I even notice a difference? Blueair is a brand name I’ve seen and associated with filtration for a while now, but was it just hype? Thankfully, I’m happy to report that my worry was entirely misplaced. This is indeed a great air purifier.
Starting off with appearances, this is not a small machine, but not huge either. It’s about the same footprint as a wastepaper basket, although taller at around 19 inches. It’s relatively light and most of the weight comes in the top portion of the unit – in pictures that would be the white area above the gray filter mesh. Below that head unit is mostly empty space occupied by the filters. The packaging clearly states its proud Swedish origin, and the design is what I’d call Swedish modern influenced. To me, it doesn’t stand out any more than it blends it. It calls just enough attention to itself that one could just as easily ignore it as they would be intrigued by what this object is.
Functionally, the power cord feels long enough to accommodate being placed nearly anywhere. The controls are on the top of the unit, where the fan unit resides. There are two touch sensitive buttons: power and fan. The fan button cycles through 5 modes: Auto, Night Mode, and 3 different levels of fan strength. As the fan strength increases, so does the volume. At the third and highest level it is definitely loud enough to notice, but not anymore so than any other room fan would be.
Night Mode is specifically designed to run at the lowest fan speed (lower than level 1) and dim all the lights fully. Speaking of lights, there’s not many. On top there’s one to indicate which mode and a small dot to indicate if you are connected to wifi. On the front of the top portion of the unit is a slender light that changes color to indicate air quality status (Blue for excellent, green for good, yellow for moderate, yellow for polluted, red for very polluted). The lights, even at their brightest, aren’t very obtrusive.
The filter itself, comprising the larger part of the unit, has two parts: the replaceable filter and the pre-filter. The replaceable filter, depending on your air quality level, should need to be replaced every 6-9 months, which feels very reasonable to me. The pre-filter is the gray fabric you see surrounding it. This can be vacuumed or even washed. This can also be bought in other colors, too.
The phone app is the other part of this air purifier. It was very easy to set up, using Bluetooth for the initial connection to the unit, allowing the unit to connect to your wifi. From that point on, all functions of the air purifier can be controlled remotely from the app. This includes adjusting the modes, a child lock to prevent changes from the touch buttons on the unit itself, adjusting the LED brightness, seeing your filter life status, and two very cool features: scheduling and welcome home. Scheduling lets set everything from mode to LED brightness on any recurring schedule you’d prefer. Welcome Home is a geofencing feature. This allows you to have it go into standby when leaving your home and automode when you return (unless you return between 9pm and 8am, where it goes into night mode), all without having to do anything but have your phone with you when you leave and return.
As a stats nerd, my favorite features are the air quality graphs. On the main screen of the app, after putting in an address, you’ll see the air quality index for outdoors. On the screen for your purifier, of which you can add several, you see the same air quality graph for that particular unit. It’s interesting to see how the indoor air quality can be affected by the outdoor, and how the Blueair purifier works to correct this.
My air quality in my work from home office that I share with my dog was good initially upon starting the unit and has remained on auto mode and excellent air quality after about the first two hours or so. My office is a smaller space, doesn’t have the greatest HVAC circulation, and when occupied for hours upon hours by both adult male and dog is not terrible smelling, but there IS a smell. With his air purifier running the stale smell of being occupied has been non-existent. On rainy days, I’ve often noticed a cat urine odor from my yard that enters my room. I’m happy to say it’s been rainy for two days and I’ve not noticed that odor at all!
My experience so far with the Blueair 411i Max has been fantastic. I’m a complete convert and will be looking at more units for other areas of my home. If you, like me, were unsure of air purifiers but have considered a purchase, I’m happy to say that this is the real deal and definitely works as advertised.

Came nicely packaged and was protected during shipping. Box was easy to open and the purifier was easy to remove from box. There was no assembly for the filter it’s plug and go. We wanted this in our bedroom which is on the larger side so I was a little concerned that this wouldn’t be enough for a few reasons.. one it’s lightweight and on the medium size range from others we own. Another main reason was because this thing is quite! It only has four speeds and on max speed four it’s not nearly as loud as the other ones we own and on speed one two and three I don’t even hear it all and it’s about five feet from where I sleep. Anyways I had my doubts but this air purifier more then gets the job done. The first night I plugged it in and left it on speed two all night. In the morning before I went to work I turned it down to speed one bit left it on. When I came home from work and went in my bedroom I immediately noticed that the air seemed fresher and cleaner! It just felt better to breathe. On top of that I had a sinus surgery a year ago and still have some issues and now after some use I notice my congestion is going down. I recommend this purifier to anyone

Out of the box you get the air purifier.
The setup is extremely easy. You can simply plug it in, and use it in the most basic and manual of ways. There's a control panel on the top of the unit which has buttons for auto, night mode, and three separate fan settings.
The outer covering of the air purifier is this nice mesh fabric. Most of the intakes are behind the mesh. This is another layer of filtering. It's a nice touch.
You can download the Blueair app. The app let's you control the unit from your smartphone, as well as see the life of the filter. You'll have to create an account and connect the unit model to the app so it will pair properly.
I put it in my basement/gym area to see how it would change the air quality in there, and I'm happy to say that after about 2 hours, I did notice a change in air quality.
Even on the highest setting, it wasn't loud. I wouldn't recommend this for a large living room, or any type of space that size, this is more for a smaller room, or maybe even a mid sized den.
All in all, this is a nice little air purifier. The only challenge like with most other air purifiers is finding a good supply of the filters.

The Blueair - Blue Pure 411i Max is a great choice for someone wanting to start off with an affordable, small room air cleaner. Being an existing Blueair customer, adding one or more of these to one's home is even a cooler option, as multiple units can be scheduled & monitored from one information packed mobile app. That's what I do.
The Blueair - Blue Pure 411i Max is rated between 18 and 46 dBa which is probably pretty meaningless to most folks. What I can tell you from personal experience is that the unit is pretty darned quiet no matter if you have it on Auto or manual speed settings. The sound it does produce at higher speeds is very smooth & pleasant sounding White Noise. At the lower speeds it is - for all intents & purposes - silent in operation. So this unit should not bother most people while sleeping. I have mine in my spare room/Office and it has made a huge difference during this current Spring allergy season. It also is very beneficial in keeping the air fresh in the same space with the addition of an active little dog hanging around.
The touch controls on the top of the unit are simple and straightforward. The LED indication in that panel and from the front facing status indicator are clear yet soft in illumination.
I really find the machine washable exterior filter ingenious and convenient to maintain a good working & good looking gizmo. I also like the fact that you can buy additional ones to have around so your machine can keep running while you tend to another cover filter in the laundry. Those covers come in several different colors - so that's a nice bonus too. Flare is fun.
All-in-all, I am strong believe in the range of Blueair products. We use a much larger and more sophisticated "Protect" model in our home and these "Pure" nodes offer a nice solution to expanding the boundaries of your clean home environment to bedrooms, offices and even the kitchen - while costing little to nothing to operate daily.
Pros:
Compact
Easy to maintain
Super quiet operation
Very energy efficient
Filters are relatively inexpensive and easy to change
The exterior filter fabric is machine washable and can be replaced at will, including the ability to color coordinate with room décor and/or mood
The Blueair mobile app is cool, easy to navigate and from what I've observed over a several years, pretty much bug-free. The app will alert you to the status of your filter performance too.
Cons:
None

I recently purchased the Blue Pure 411i Max for my bedroom, and it has exceeded my expectations! The sleek and minimalist design blends seamlessly with my decor, and the compact size makes it perfect for smaller rooms without taking up too much space.
The air quality improvement was noticeable within hours of use. Dust, pet dander, and odors are significantly reduced, and the air feels fresher overall. It runs so quietly that I barely notice it, even on higher settings. It's perfect for overnight use, and I’ve been sleeping better knowing the air is cleaner.
Overall, I highly recommend the Blue Pure 411i Max for anyone looking for an efficient, quiet, and smart air purifier for their home. It’s worth the investment for cleaner, healthier air!

I’ve had a few units before as I suffer from allergies and although I’ve liked them and enjoyed the benefit there are some things I disliked. The look, the size sometimes would be too big and cleaning or keeping them clean. Also the app and connection has been a struggle with some ones that I’ve used/owned (not Blue air but won’t mention or criticize the manufacturers).
I love the blue air! Here is why;
Size: moved in an apartment that is around 800sf and wants something for the bedroom and closet area which is also where our cats do their business… The 411i (different from the 411a because of Wi-Fi connection from my understanding) is PERFECT. It works so well… I’m sitting near it now while writing this because my wife was using hair spray and it is bright red (led display) and working hard at cleaning the air! Size is perfect complements the room instead of looking like a boulder in it.
App: love it. I set it on auto and can see the health of the filter and also how it’s working through out the day. Easy to use and a breeze to set up!
Cleaning: everything is so easy to clean from taking the fabric out and putting it the wash or just vacuuming it when you think it’s needed they made it very easy and very simple.
Honestly my sleep is better, my allergies are so much less of an issue and my wife says that it made the room have a fresh “fancy hotel” scent.
This is fantastic and really do recommend.

So the most interesting thing about this filter is the column filter is on the exterior of the unit and the grey exterior surface is actually a stretchy cover reminiscent of a fitted sheet. Obviously that’ll make it fairly easy to wash as a pre filter but definitely an interesting note if you’re used to an enclosure that the filter fits in. The nice thing with the column design is that the exhausted /filtered air exits the top of the unit and has a fairly uniform dispersion in all directions. When I first setup the air filter I had considered whether turning it would adjust the air flow I felt but it was pretty consistent in all directions.
Now the nice thing with this air filter versus my other system is that even in the highest setting it was fairly quiet. It certainly wasn’t anything close to silent but similar to running a sleep noise app at a lower setting just to get to sleep. In comparison my computer fans under a slight load were louder in comparison.
Functionally the purifier worked well. I felt like after several days of use that the area I had it setup in definitely smelled cleaner and fresher. As a secondary test I had recently dusted and as I generally use a fan in there, it usually makes sense to dust every week. After seeing this unit up there wasn’t really much to dust so I definitely feel like it’s recirculating the air well.

High Quality Filter - App Needs Work

New to air purifiers? From everything I've seen, Blueair is one of the top brands out there. As someone who doesn't NEED an air purifier, but lives with someone who has cat allergies, I was very curious to see how good this was. I was almost certain it would make a difference for my friend, especially for shared living spaces and for him to use in his room at night.
The results? Plain and simple, he is able to breathe in his room, and in shared spaces, without feeling attacked by cat dander and allergens. No more endless sneezing and red eyes. He really likes it and the fan is whisper quiet at 1 - it's even quieter in night mode. After about 3 days of usage, the filter is still at 97% health, and the app told me that the filter had 99% life left in it when I first set it up. According to the app, the air quality in his room was poor. And that's not surprising, his room was a little bit dusty too. But my goal with this product was to answer, "Will this product make a tangible difference for someone with allergies?", and it absolutely does. The Blueair app says the air is "Good" quality now due to the filter running almost all day. I think it would be excellent if he didn't open his windows periodically. For the record - it only took about 20 minutes for his 220 sq. ft. room to be purified, and again, this is according to the app since I can't test it myself.
A quick bit of advice for everyone - this product is MUCH more enjoyable to use and setup when you download the Blueair app for iOS or Android. Be sure to do this when setting up your device so you can see the air quality index (AQI) for the room and remotely control all functions of the device. You'll need the app to see the filter status as well.
So why did I rate this product 4 stars? Because the app 20 minutes to setup. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app twice and I had to move my phone and the air filter SUPER close to my WiFi access point. Connecting the device to WiFi was not a great experience. I've worked in cell phone sales for 5 years. I have also worked in IT for the last 5 years. I can't expect for someone to set this up easily when it gave me setup issues on a Pixel 7 Pro, with a modern home WiFi setup, and a dedicated 2.4ghz WiFi network. Please do your best to be patient when setting up this device. Beyond that, this product works wonderfully and I do recommend it to anyone who needs pure air in their living space.

These look great--I've had friends ask if they are speakers!--and as far as I can tell function great too. They're super quiet in auto mode and only get loud when they need to go to work, which luckily hasn't been often, usually when cooking or making popcorn. (Who knew how bad popcorn is for air quality?) I've had them 8 months and still have some good filter life left. App is easy to use and set up. Being able to dim the monitor light is a plus too.
