The only thing, the mic volume needs to be turned up much higher than the guitar. Haven’t used it out side yet, I hope the vocals are loud enough.

      Hi Rkickles,
Thanks for your review. Go ahead and turn up the volume level on the microphone channel. You should be able to get it as loud as the guitar. We have an article with more information about this.

Flexible, Versatile and Portable PA System

Summary: The Bose S1 is one of the best-sounding portable PA systems out there, with Bluetooth connectivity as an added bonus. Background: While I'm not currently in the music industry, I supported musical performances (including rock bands, jazz bands, and musical theater) through college and well into my adult life. I've used a variety of PA and monitor systems from a number of companies, miked singers and guitar cabinets and pianos, and helped record and master audio for college bands. I would not call myself an expert, but I know my way around a mixing console and understand the headaches of live performance audio. Introduction: The Bose S1 is an interesting piece of gear, because it fits a couple of niches really well: it makes a great portable, battery-powered PA system for busking or impromptu performances, and it can serve as a monitor speaker for a vocalist or acoustic guitarist as part of a house PA system. I've used other portable PA systems, and they were almost universally heavier without being as loud or as clear as the Bose. I've been using this primarily as a PA system for outdoor presentations with a wireless microphone. The Good: Flexibility - it supports three inputs, two of which can take either a 1/4" guitar/bass/keyboard input or an XLR connector from a microphone. The third input takes either line level signals or Bluetooth. The first two inputs have treble, bass and reverb controls, as well as a couple of pre-set eq settings for direct-in guitar or microphone that work surprisingly well...and it all sounds *good*. Versatility - it's shaped so it can lay on the floor angled up like a floor monitor, it can stand on end like a "normal" speaker, and it has a mounting holes on the bottom for a standard 35mm speaker stand, letting you use this one speaker for multiple applications. It has a line out connection, so you can connect it to a second S1, an audio recorder, or the house PA system. The built-in battery lets you go for several hours in a location without power. Portability - it has a carrying handle built-in on the top, and it's lightweight and easy to move from your house to your car to the performance. The Bad: Bluetooth volume is controlled only by the device connected to it - while I normally regard this as a good thing, the minimum volume setting on your phone may still be a little high for your audience. Would be nice to have a battery gauge, rather than having to double-tap the Bluetooth connection button and count the number of times the LED flashes.

This is an excellent portable speaker! It is just the right size for providing music to a small to moderate sized public space, such as a coffee house, small auditorium, or private home. Equipped with the rechargeable battery, it is also good for 6-8 hours of performance without any access to AC power. Larger speakers may have a more compelling bass, but at the expense of much heavier weight and difficulty in transport. I have also been using this speaker as a music player in my home, and it handily fills 2000 square feet with sound via Bluetooth streaming from my computer or phone. I have not tried to set this speaker up in tandem in an attempt to simulate stereo sound, but one could do this if desired. Set up of this speaker is easy; just plug in or pair with Bluetooth, and play. It took me a while to learn that there is a fast charging feature, but the battery seems to reach full power with only a few hours of conventional charging. I have always been impressed with the ability Bose has of creating booming sound out of small speakers, and the S1 is no exception. I have heard that some guitar players are not happy with the sound quality, but I have nothing but good to say about the way it projects my keyboard. I can strongly recommend this speaker for any musician who needs a capable and convenient portable sound system.

Upon receiving it, I opened the box to find that the AC plug was missing!? Literally went back to Best Buy after 20 minutes and letting them know that it was missing the plug and I can't even use it. I heard it at another competitor store and I wasn't blown away. Sounds like it clips as it gets louder.

Sony-level sound quality for a PA speaker

I was provided a unit in exchange for writing an unbiased review. Sony's S1 Portable Pro Speaker packs a lot of punch and functionality in a portable and smaller case that is sure to get your audience's attention. An added bonus is the included lithium-ion battery that provides several hours (not quite sure exactly how long) of playing time on a charge. The sound is Sony sound reproduction -- so no surprise there. And that sound is thunderous, so there is no problem in filling any room, certainly at 50% dialed-up volume. Admittedly, if you want to go the stereo route, you're probably going to do better with two of these things. Physically, they do weigh a reasonable 15 lbs. It has an integrated carry handle on its top, and the speaker can be either mounted on a pole (there's a pole indent at its bottom corner) or sat straight up on a table or at an angle in a "monitor" position. Aside from a line out, the Sony S1 Portable Pro has three mixer inputs -- two for a mic or instrument, replete with their own Reverb, Bass and Treble dials, and a third for a combined Bluetooth/3.5mm jack input. While each line in has its own volume control, the only negative I found was that some of the sound level adjustments weren't very fine-tuned (then again, this isn't a sound board that would allow the biggest audiophile to finely tune every aspect of sound). In other words, the sound would go from 0% to 7%, then steadily up to about 35% or so, then a jump to something like 40%. Besides this very minor detail, this is a great speaker for any occasion or special event you're hosting.
