It serves my purpose, and I am happy with this purchase. Although there are volume buttons on the unit, you can also control it with your linked device. When turned on, the speaker announces the battery percentage.

Thank you for posting. Different media types might produce different quality sounds. Try different media to determine if the issue is specific to certain media. Battery life is 12 hours at a typical listening volume. The use of the speaker at extreme volumes will reduce its playback time to as little as a few hours.
