I have about a dozen small, portable bluetooth speakers that I've acquired over the years. My most recent addition, the Marshall Emberton, displaced my (at the time) favorite speaker, the Bose SoundLink Mini II. The Mini II is one of my oldest bluetooth speakers, and not many speakers have been able to stand up to it in terms of design or overall performance. The SoundLink Flex from Bose is another in the SoundLink product line, sitting near the bottom in terms of price. Its design is reminiscent of modern portable speakers, with a slightly rugged look and completely black in color. The buttons atop the speaker have the same layout as the other speakers in the SoundLink series, including power, volume, play/pause and a dedicated bluetooth pairing button. A strap on one side allows for additional carrying options (for instance, hanging from a backpack on a hike). The Flex is also waterproof and dustproof, so it's pool and beach safe. If dropped in water it floats; it's ruggedness is one of the big upsells versus the Mini II. Sound performance is right in line with many other Bose products. Highs and mids come across clear and undistorted at all volume levels. Due to its size bass performance is going to be limited, but Bose does an acceptable job making the most of the space; the speaker certainly "sounds" bassier than its size suggests it should. Battery life was good--far better than my Mini II. Bose says you should get 12 hours of playback, although your mileage will vary based on volume. During testing, I didn't charge it...the charge it came with out of the box was sufficient and lasted intermittent use over the course of several days. The Bose Connect app is basic at best, allowing for simple device management, the ability to connect multiple SoundLink speakers and display the audio currently being played. It does not offer any sort of EQ settings. So while the sound is good, if you don't like the out-of-box tuning of the Flex, it will take a third-party app to adjust the curve. I don't have a lot of bad things to say about the Flex. The front and rear grills are powder-coated steel, but the rubberized matieral on the back readily shows dirt and grease. This may be a trade-off for the rugged design. Additionally, it feels somewhat unstable when sitting on a table; this is not something that Bose wants you to worry about, thanks to Position IQ technology that adjusts playback based on its orientation. I really think the price is right, at least for what you're getting. Yes, you're paying to some degree for the name--but a good-performing, durable, rugged speaker for $140 is a no-brainer for me.

It's a little pricey for a bluetooth speaker, but the sound quality can't be beat. The carmine red color looks pretty slick too.

I've grown to love Bose products, however this does not compete with similar sets. Claims that a full charge can last up to 12 hours of listening. So far the most I've been able to get is 2+ at a moderate volume. Very disappointed.

Hello Jeffrey, I am glad to hear that you have been a long-time fan of our products. The soundlink flex will provide 12 hours at typical listening volume. Use of the speaker at higher volumes will reduce its playback time.

The charge time to a full battery will be 4 hours, if you are still not getting the full battery life span, please view our best troubleshooting suggestions on our product support page here: https://bose.life/3uzKSlf. Should you need any additional support, please feel free to reach out to our technical support teams, who will be more than happy to assist you further: bose.life/3rykPZR. Simply awful! Will not charge past 20% Bose app is just another confusing detail to deal with. Sound is mediocre compared to others in it’s price class. Obviously this particular Bose product is a complete letdown for those who own vintage Bose speakers. Will be returning.

      Hi Robert.
Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear that you are having a charging issue with the speaker. Please follow the simple steps here to address the issue. https://bose.life/424EoWp. With the sound, different media types might produce different quality sound. For example, Podcasts, music stored locally on your phone, MP3s, streaming music services (Spotify, Pandora), videos on your device or stored in the cloud, etc. can all vary in quality. Try different media to determine if the issue is specific to certain media. If you require further assistance, please contact us here. https://bose.life/3BgUIIU. We would love to help.

    Another Great Speaker from Bose

I believe that when it comes to speakers, Bose is definitely on the top. They make some of the best sounding and high quality speakers on the market. I personally own a few of them and the SoundLink Flex is just another great speaker from Bose. I will start off talking about the sound quality since it is a speaker. The speaker is a midsize speaker. It is not the smallest but also not the largest on the market. However, that does not stop it from packing a large sound. This speaker gets extremely loud but also does not sacrifice quality. Even with it on the highest volume the sound still sounds extremely crisp. It does an amazing job of balancing the base, treble and overall sound. I prefer the sound of Bose speakers over anything else. Next we will talk about the design of the speaker. As previously mentioned, this is not the smallest speaker. Although it is decently portable it is pretty hefty. You could put it in a backpack however if you are worried about weight I would definitely think twice. Part of the reason it is heavy is because it is made out of a high quality metal and silicone material which is a fair trade off. These materials make this speaker feel extremely high quality but also offer great durability which means you do not have to worry about beating it up. The speaker has two position it can either be laid on its back or standing straight up. It uses USB-C to charge which I was glad to see since that is becoming the new standard. It also has a loop on the end which you can throw a carabiner through and hook it to a bag or a molly strap system. This speaker is waterproof which allows you to take it just about anywhere such as to the pool or the beach. The battery life is more than enough in my opinion. I think it is rated at 12 hours and it seemed to last this long or longer in my testing. When you turn on the speaker it tells you how much battery percentage is left which I believe is convenient so you know if you need to charge it before use or not. There is also the Bose connect app which you can connect the speaker and there are more setting you are able to adjust within the app. This has become one of my new favorite Bluetooth speakers it is a good size, sounds amazing, and its decently portable. I would highly recommend this speaker to anyone who is looking at a mid size Bluetooth speaker that has superior sound quality, premium build quality, and durability/waterproof.

Not good! In the past I’ve stayed away from Bose products as in my experience they are just a well marketed brand but in reality not any better than a ton of their competitors. However when purchasing a portable speaker I thought I’d give Bose another chance. Due to its relatively good reviews and competitive pricing. Unfortunately, Bose has not wooed me back. I want to preface I purchased this speaker to listen to podcasts at work. I do not listen to loud music or anything that would tax the drivers in this speaker. I have probably listened to 20-30 hrs total time in the past 6 months. To my surprise the speakers have blown and it sounds awful. I’m not sure how this is possible but I can’t even listen to dialogue through this thing anymore. It is a giant paperweight now. Sorry Bose, just not worth it with all the other great options out there.
