Big sound from a portable package

The Bose SoundLink Max is the latest iteration to the SoundLink family, a well respected line up of portable Bluetooth speakers. Does this one live up the name, and as its own name suggests, provide the Maximum experience? Lets take a listen and find out. The packaging is clean and straightforward, with an emphasis on minimal use of plastic or Styrofoam. Refreshingly, the speaker comes with both a USB-C cable and a high wattage charger, bucking a recent trend of not including chargers with products. Other than those two items, some basic documentation, and the speaker, there is nothing else in the box. The speaker itself looks like a grown up version of the SoundLink Flex. It has side grilles for the passive radiators, a set of buttons on the top, and the carrying handle. It’s an understated design with no flashing lights or other gimmicks, which is what a speaker should be, in my opinion. The Blue Dusk color is very on trend and looks great. Inside, the speaker features two woofers and a tweeter, and does support stereo sound, which is nice to not have to link two smaller speakers together. It also supports Bluetooth 5.4, finally moving the line away from the older Bluetooth 4 standards. Another nice include is an analog audio input, letting you connect it to any number of devices, like a turntable if you are hopping on the vintage audio trend of late. You can also use the battery in the speaker to reverse charge your phone or other device by plugging it into the USB-C port. I do wish there were dust covers on the ports to keep sand and liquids out of them, especially the aux input port. If you are going to take it outside you might want to get a couple of dust plugs for the ports to keep stuff out of there. After charging the speaker the recommendation is to connect it and use the Bose app to configure things like the EQ, apply any product updates, and customize the shortcut button. Weirdly, the shortcut button right now has just two options – configure it to switch to the line in input, or be kind of an oddly hacked up interface only for Spotify. I left it at input switching. You don’t have to use the Bose app if you don’t want to, but a few controls do require connecting it to the app from time to time. After connecting, it’s time for a listen. It’s immediate that this by far has the most bass of any SoundLink speaker to date. It’s not room shaking, as there are limits to the size and power of a portable speaker, but it is present for sure. It also has a very wide stereo sound stage, remarkably so for a smaller speaker, especially at the sweet spot of about 4-5 feet away. Bose is claiming they are using some of their virtual surround enhancements normally reserved for a soundbar in here, and there is kind of an uncanny depth to some audio tracks that does sound more like a surround sound setup than just stereo. It may also lead to kind of an overprocessed sound on occasion, with Charle Puth’s “Left and Right” (which I used to test the stereo separation) having an oddly distorted sound at some moments in the drums. This could either be an issue with the track’s encoding or how the speaker is processing it, and Bose may still be working the kinks out of how their sound processing works with this specific speaker. I found the speaker with the default EQ to be a little bright and actually a little lacking in bass when used outside. I tuned the EQ to +5 bass and -2 treble to find what I found to be a more balanced sound. It can get SUPER loud at full volume. Overall, it sounds good, which at this premium price point, it should. As anyone with other SoundLink speakers know, one feature of the SoundLink family is the ability to link SoundLink speakers together in a “party mode” to spread sound around a space. Sadly, this speaker, despite the name SoundLink, does not actually link to any of its SoundLink cousins. In fact, it uses the Bose app, not the Bose Connect app, so it sits outside of the SoundLink line and only seems to share the name and the look. That said, this speaker is quite capable of filling a space with sound on its own, and having stereo means you don’t need two speakers linked together for stereo sound. You can link it to some other Bose smart speakers as well, but it's still a little odd that the SoundLink Max can’t link to the other SoundLink speakers. Overall, this is an expensive, premium portable speaker that punches well above its size. Showing up at a party with it or using it when you have guests over will almost certainly get comments about how much sound is coming out of this still relatively compact package. Portable, modern Bluetooth and charging capabilities, and still having an analog input make for a well rounded speaker that will keep your party rocking for hours.

Thank you for your review, Keyan! I'm happy to hear that the SoundLink Max Portable Bluetooth speaker has impressed you with its stereo and bass performance. It's also good to see that you took advantage of the customizable EQ settings in the Bose app, which can indeed be tweaked to achieve an output that is just right for you. I live this so much! I got it for my bicycle and it matches my orange theme, not to mention the sound quality is incredible and the strap is surprisingly secure ! I did however purchase a cover/case just in case. The case also has a Carabiner that I have attached to a zip tie for peace of mind! I like it so much I may purchase another and have surround sound now that I see they can be paired and do party mode!!!

Huge sound from this tiny speaker!

I am so impressed that a speaker this small can produce such great sound! This speaker blows away any other mini speaker I have ever owned. The sound is rich and the bass sounds great. The speaker is waterproof and encased in rubber so it will hold up to picnics and pool parties but I like to listen to it in the house too. It's the perfect bathroom speaker and it's great in the kitchen while I'm making dinner. It's very lightweight and has a stretchy rubber strap on the back so you can hook it on almost anything. The app lets you name the speaker, check the devices it's currently connected to, pair two speakers in Party Mode and set auto timers. You can control the volume from the app or directly from the speaker. When the speaker is paired to my smartphone it acts as a speakerphone and the sound is very good. There are two buttons on the speaker, on/off and Bluetooth. When the speaker is first turned on it tells you how full the battery charge is and what devices it is connected to. It remembers the last two devices it is paired to and you can clear devices and keep them in memory for next time. With the amazing sound quality and compact size, I use this speaker daily and in many different places. Definitely recommend this little speaker for its great sound quality and portability.

The Bose SoundLink Micro is a very pleasant surprise! Though we obtained it for the family to use, I plan to get another one just for myself. Honestly, it is QUALITY audio from such a diminutive design that it is hard to resist. Here are some thoughts about our experience with Micro so far. First and foremost - the sound! I have a very expensive pair of headphones as my primary means of listening to music. When those headphones are not in use, I also have a very nice set-up of loudspeakers in a couple of rooms in our home. I am picky about sound quality and I know every nuance of some of my favorite albums which I have listened to for years. Believe it or not, the SoundLink Micro actual competes! At much lower volumes, of course, and only when the Micro is placed in close proximity; yet, this little speaker puts out very rich and pleasing high-quality music. The lows, mids and highs are all there and well represented. The sound is as detailed, dynamic and accurate as a little speaker possibly could put out. When compared to other bluetooth speakers we own, I like the Micro somewhat better (more accurate) than our Bose SoundLink Mini II. The bass is also tighter on the Micro when compared to the MIni. The Mini has bass that punches deaper but it tends to drown out the highs. The Micro does not have that problem. I also like the Micro much better than our Bose SoundLink Color II. The Color is not nearly as dynamic though it plays louder. The only bluetooth speaker I like better is our Bose SoundLink Revolve which handedly tops the Micro in every area. That is, every area except for ruggedness and portability. Speaking of portability, that is another aspect that makes the SoundLink Micro stand-out. It fits so perfectly in the hand. There is a nice weight to it that feels right. Also, the silicon outer shell has a quality feel to it. It does not quit feel rubbery in a cheap way. It reminds me more of the fluoroelastomer sports band that came with my wife’s smart watch. It just feels right. The back strap has the same quality feel. The strap secures firmly in place and seems durable enough to last for years. Though the speaker is small enough to fit in my pocket, I probably would rather use the strap to attach the speaker to a bag or belt. My son likes to strap it to his trumpet case when he goes to band practice (see photo). The speaker is both water proof and shock resistant which just adds to its portability. The small size and rugged “take anywhere” aspect of the Micro is what really sets it apart from every other speaker we own. Bose claims that the battery will last up to six hours. Honestly, I have not kept track of how long we use the speaker before needing to charge it. I do know that our experience with Bose with our older speakers is that they tend to under promise and over deliver on their battery claims. I fully expect the Micro would last longer than six hours if played near 60% volume which is where I tend to keep it. As to features, the Bose Micro has plenty. The speaker doubles as a speaker phone with a dedicated button to answer phone calls. The same button also multitasks to pause/play music, skip tracks and summon our devices’ voice assistant. The Bose Connect App is available to download to tweak the speaker’s auto-off settings and to update the firmware when available. Bose says that the App also serves to link the Micro to other Bose bluetooth speakers. I have not tried this feature yet, but certainly will soon. How awesome to have two speakers playing stereo music on the go! The Bose SoundLink Micro is probably not be for everyone, but for most will be absolutely fantastic. It certainly sounds nice for its size. Actually, it just sounds great - period. Great job Bose!

    Classy little speaker sounds amazing

I love this little speaker. I have review a bunch of Bluetooth speakers so I know what I like. Setup was easy. There is a special Bose Connect app, but you don't need it. You can connect just through the bluetooth setting like any other speaker. The only thing the app does that you might need is a firmware update oh and party mode where you connect multiple Micros together. I am not keeping it on my phone. When you turn it on a very nice lady tells you the battery level. I love this. When you connect to a device, she tells you and even says the name of what you connected to. The documentation says it is waterproof. For me that means it's ok to be outside when it starts to rain. Then I put it under cover. I'm not going to push it. There is a rubber strap on the back that disconnects on one ent then snaps back. It's kinda tight, so I'm not sure what I can use it for. The charging cable is the standard USB Micro. I wish it was USB C because that is where things are moving. Finally, the sound! It is awesome. gets nice and loud with full base. I listened to it for hours around my campfire and decided I just love it. The size is very nice too. Overall a very well made classy speaker. Notes: - Water proof so you can use it outside without fear - Sounds amazing, loud volume, clear sound - Long 6 hour battery life - Nice lady tells you the battery level and when you are connected - Don't really need the app to connect. - Uses micro USB cable, would have liked USB C - Strap on back to attach speaker to something

This bluetooth speaker from Bose boasts impressive volume from such a small unit, very capable of playing over crowd or background noise, and has the capability of connecting to other SoundLink Micros to offer a multi-speaker environment. Though, the numerous speaker set up seems unnecessary from my experiences with it. The speaker is able to produce a decent quality sound with more than enough volume to make itself heard in a crowd. The sound quality is comparable to other bluetooth speakers of a similar and even slightly larger size, good but not great. With that being said, for the settings you'll use it, the sound quality is more than good enough! Pros: -Compact and lightweight -Durable -Easy setup -Ability to pair with other Bose SoundLink Micros -Waterproof -Elastic strap to clip your speaker to a bike, backpack, or shower curtain rod! Cons -Elastic strap is not able to be used as a stand as well (makes sense as it is elastic) -Price per unit, one is sufficient for most things it's designed for but the ability to connect multiple to one device for a multi-speaker setup can be more costly than a larger bluetooth speaker I would highly recommend for smaller outdoor gatherings for some background music, cookouts, using on group bike rides, and for music in the shower. Very nice and durable little device!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review for the Bose SoundLink Max The Bose SoundLink Max is honestly one of the best portable speakers I’ve owned. The sound quality is powerful, clear, and rich with deep bass without sounding distorted, even at high volume. Whether indoors or outside, it fills the space perfectly. The battery life is excellent and lasts for hours, making it great for trips, BBQs, cabins, or relaxing outside. I also love the premium build quality — it feels durable, stylish, and easy to carry. The Bluetooth connection is fast and reliable, and the sound stays consistent even when moving around. What impressed me most is how balanced the audio sounds. Vocals are crisp, bass hits hard, and music sounds immersive no matter the genre. Bose really did an amazing job combining portability with high-end sound. Definitely worth the investment if you want a portable speaker that sounds like a much bigger system.

The SoundLink Max delivers excellent sound quality (which BOSE is known for!) The speaker measures in at 10.5” x 5” x 4” which makes it very portable. The first thing I noticed was the building quality. It has a little heft, which I love, and the rope handle is a nice touch. The sound quality is amazing, which is nice is such a small package. Too many times, I have used bluetooth portable speakers, and the sound quality negates portability. The bass was not too much, and the mids sounded great. I am a big classical fan, and this speaker manages to perform well in the genre. For battery, we are looking at 20 hours at moderate volume. I was able to use the device for around 5 hours, low volume, and the device was still at 100%, which was crazy. I believe if you keep the device at a decent to low volume, you could possibly see better battery life in terms of hours. There is also a USB-C port you can use to charge a phone, which is a neat feature to have. You can never have enough ways to charge handy. Overall, this is a well-designed, excellent performing Bluetooth speak. This will be a daily driver for me and my family as the portablity and sound, along with excellent battery life make this a must have for us.
