Customers enjoy the SoundSport Free True Wireless Headphones for their excellent sound quality, comfortable fit, and long battery life. The charging case is also well-received for its convenience. However, some users have experienced connectivity issues, find the design to be bulky, and feel that the price is not justified by the product's performance.

Glaring issue overlooked by support
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I, and many other people judging by Bose online community response, have a glaring issue with the earbuds. Thus far the issue has been completely overlooked by Bose support. In fact, the response given has been the same "working as designed, limitation of the technology" canned response given for another issue that was overlooked until engineering recently found the cause and a fix that will be available in mid-December. The issue I'm experiencing isn't the typical interference experienced by all bluetooth devices (although the Soundsport Free does seem to be much more susceptible to interference than other true wireless earbuds I've tested). The issue is the left earbud completely loses connection to the right earbud and doesn't attempt to reconnect. If you look in the Bose Connect app when this occurs, you see the left earbud greyed out. The only way to get the left earbud to connect again is to either hard reset them by putting them back in the case, or clear the device list and start the connection from scratch. This is really disappointing because everything else about the earbuds is awesome, the sound is far superior to any other earbud I've tested and the fit and comfort level are too. However, the continuous disconnects that require manual intervention render these earbuds unusable and impractical to use while working out. PLEASE take this issue into consideration. I REALLY want to love these earbuds.

A Great Set of Wireless Sport Headphones

These are some of the best Bluetooth wireless headphones I have ever used. They sound as good as some of the over the ear headsets I have used.
Positives:
Very comfortable and fit will with included (multiple sizes) of inserts
Stay securely in the ear while running or other sports
Charge quickly with included USB Case and charging cable, which also provides extended runtime
Can use one at a time if you don't want both ears plugged (They need to both be nearby though)
Sound quality is incredible
Volume can be cranked higher than you need to without distortion.
Very good Bluetooth range when using them with phone and laptop
Pairing with devices was quick and easy.
Not so positives:
The buttons are a little hard to press, but not a problem once you get used to it.
Size is a little large, but the quality hardware and sound makes up for any inconvenience.
Overall, these are excellent headphones and I have replaced my previous over-ear headphones with these for daily use.

5 being the best, 1 being worst
Comfort: __5__I have had a hard time finding some great sounding earbuds (ex: Powerbeats3) that wouldn’t give me pain when wearing them. My ears I guess are different than many, my wife says the beats don’t affect her, but it does me. Anyhow, the bose stay hear tips are quite comfy. Have worn them for an hour so far and no pain. Had to use the Large in my situation.
Sound: __5__ sounds amazing. Perfect mix between treble and bass. Bass is killer as compared to my previous Skullcandy Jib wireless. What else can I say, Bose is Bose. Not sure if the comparison of beats. Didn’t have beats for too long for a comparison.
Controls misc: __5__ this is my first set of true wireless. So not sure if all of them have this feature, however the Bose has an app that you download and use to control the earbuds. The feature of locating your earbuds when misplaced is an major plus for those who tend to misplace things. I’m not one but is a cool feature. It show where it’s located on a map and also makes the earbuds make a sound so you can locate them.
That’s it for now, and as of now, I am very happy with my purchase. Hope this helps.

Exactly what I'd expect from a Bose product

The Bose SoundSport Free wireless headphones are Bose's first foray into the true wireless headphone market. They are also my first true wireless set; I have plenty of Bluetooth/wireless speakers and headphones, but none of the true wireless type.
Being a Bose product, I expected a certain type of sound quality and reliable performance.
As far as sound quality goes, it was exactly what I expected. The "Bose sound" is definitely not "flat" or "reference quality." It tends to add more punch to the audio, not unlike that Loudness button that you always wanted to use but were a little embarrassed to admit you enjoyed.
Most people are interested in hearing how hard it is to connect, and stay connected, to true wireless headphones, since they tend to have smaller antennas and/or are more susceptible to interference.
For iOS and Android, there is a Bose Connect app which makes pairing easy, as well as provides a mechanism for updates.
The SoundSport Free can actually pair to multiple devices, although of course you can only use it with one at a time. The documentation says it can be paired with up to seven devices; so far I have them paired to four and it is easy to connect to a different device with a push of a button.
Speaking of buttons; the left earpiece has a single button which tells you what device it is connected to, and can be used to switch to another device. The right earpiece has three buttons for play/pause/skip, plus separate volume buttons.
In practice, all worked well. The bluetooth connection worked surprisingly well. I actually appreciate the ability to use a single earbud, for spatial awareness.
A couple things to note. You can use these for phone calls, but phone audio only comes out of the right earbud.
Also, Bose does not publish specifications, but from my Google Pixel XL it appears that the SoundSport Free only supports the SBC and AAC codecs. AAC does sound better than SBC, but still suffers from noticeable latency when trying to watch a video, for example. I really wish aptX or LDAC was supported; it's unclear whether that is available via a firmware update or not.
The overall design is a bit on the larger side of things, although it doesn't really bother me. Multiple StayHear+ Sport tips are included, and they really do a great job of keeping the earbuds in place and ensuring a good seal for best sound quality.
Finally, the included storage/charging case keeps the earbuds safely stored and charged at the ready. When you power them on, the battery level is reported. When connected to iOS, it also reports the battery level. Google is supposedly adding this to Android soon, but in the meantime you can also see the battery level in the Bose Connect app.
Overall, I am very pleased with the overall sound and performance of the SoundSport Free. Connections seem rock solid, and the sound quality is what I expected. I appreciate being able to use just the right earbud to maintain spatial awareness. The battery life has been good as well, and the charging storage case makes it easy to avoid losing them or finding them out of juice.

Hello Ron, thanks for your review and we are happy to hear that you love them! We’ve heard from some customers who are experiencing audio synchronization delays while watching videos. We know truly wireless headphones are subject to some latency between audio and video, but the feedback we’ve received indicated the product wasn’t performing how we expected.
A SoundSport Free software update is now available to improve audio-video synchronization for most customers and use situations. You can download the new software wirelessly through the Bose Connect app or by visiting btu.bose.com on your computer. This update will benefit customers with Bluetooth devices that fully support Audio Video Distribution Transport Protocol (AVDTP) version 1.3 or later. We have confirmed Apple iPhones and iPads use this protocol and we continue to evaluate other popular Bluetooth devices. Audio-video synchronization may also vary depending on the mobile app being viewed (e.g. Netflix, YouTube). We encourage customers to use the most recent software for your mobile apps, Bluetooth devices, and Bose headphones.
If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact us directly at our Customer Support Line at 1-800-379-2073. We're open Mon-Fri, 9 AM to 8 PM. Or you can follow us on Twitter @BoseService.

Hi Jonny,
Let's get your call issues resolved today! Clearing the pairing list on the headphones and your source device then reconnecting like a new connection. You can do this by pressing the button for 10 seconds until you hear 'device list cleared'. This will help maintain a stable connection with your device.
Thanks!

Hi! Thank you very much for your review. The SoundSport Free headphones operate on stereo audio when listening to music, and mono audio when operating telephone calls. This may explain why you may only hear sound from one headphones whilst receiving a call. If you are experiencing issues with the functionality of your product, I would recommend contacting our technical support team. They will be more than happy to help you out.

Bose is probably my favorite headphone manufacturer. It just seems like they actually care about what they're creating and care about what the customer thinks. I have the QC 35 and they are the best headphones on the market. Now they've taken it a step further for those of us who love to listen to music while training. Of course Bose gets it right with this one. The sound is great. An attractive design. A quality product. One thing that I don't like about them is the size. My ears are on the smaller side so they look bulky on me but that's a very small thing to deal with lol. I like Bose's version of the ear tips. They actually stay in my ear. I've had problems in the past with other earbuds not staying in place while working out. Another thing I don't like is that I don't have that air tight feeling. So they always feel like they're not properly inserted(but they actually are). While I do think the sound is good, I really was expecting them to be better. Maybe it's because I'm used to the great sound of the QC35. Nevertheless, you would not be disappointed with this purchase. Especially if you will use them for working out.

I have had these for the past 3 weeks. They are awesome and easy to use. I love the charging case and the ease of start up. I like that after the app and your phone sync they pair right away.
The fit is a bit tricky at first but once in I had no prob. I cleaned the house and had no probs as I ran around. The sound is super clear and drowns out background noise. So you are hearing only your music or book, like i did.
I loved that the charger is the case so you dont have to carry a case and cord for your earphones and case. The case has stayed charged for longer than a week. I used my phones and have not encountered to have to charge them.
Now for the bad. I left my phone in another room and as I got farther away the signal would come in and out. But if i kept my phone by it was clear. So def not go to the gym and leave your phone in the locker. That is really the only downfalls so far.

Some Issues..But Overall a good product

Wow, I'm impressed with the sound quality, the battery endurance, and Bluetooth range. I've only had these for a week or so..but so far so good. This is my first wireless ear buds so can't really compare to others but am finding these are great while exercising. No wires!
I looked into the problems reported by others about reception problems and audio delay when playing videos. Bluetooth is 2.4 Ghz so it has to fight with other items on the same frequency - - which is a good majority of wireless electronics. As such, I get drops between the left/right at times but is only when there's interference.
As for video, Bluetooth has a delay. The synching answer is with delaying the video so it's on track with the audio. I'd guess Bose would have to either make their own player or extension for other players.
Overall I like the product, its durable and reliable and the case is the cutest!
