Huge upgrade in sound quality. It can be set to auto on and off. My old ones used to buzz very quietly when the computer was off which would drive me nuts. Not cheap but it's a solidly built upgrade. I haven't used it in a home theater setting, but I imagine it would be a solid upgrade over built in speakers.

The problem is the internal speakers are poorly designed. You had to turn the TV up all the way and still could not hear. This Bose speaker is amazing. Now you can hear with the volume turned up to a minimal level. The sound quality is superb. I highly recommend this Bose Speaker, P.S. The reviews on the Sony TV I bought are poor for sound quality.
