I've known Bose fan-boys and Bose haters over the years; but regardless of what you might think about Bose, there's generally no denying that their products tend to produce remarkably full-bodied sound from often diminutive enclosures and deceptively simple-looking devices that probably shouldn't be capable of pumping out jams at the volume levels they manage. That's not to say their products produce the most accurate, bit-for-bit pure, audiophile-quality sound you can possibly come by...but the good folks at Bose do seem to know a thing or two about manufacturing products that provide perfectly engaging, background filling, fun-sounding products that tend to either a) blend seamlessly into a room's decor, or b) unobtrusively disappear into a room while still filling it with sound without filling it with speakers. And that pretty much sums up what you're going to get here. No, the Bose TV Speaker surely isn't going to replace a dedicated home theater setup to deliver that visceral, movie-theater-accurate, teeth rattling, immersive there-in-the-soundtrack experience--heck, it doesn't even bother with attempting simulated surround sound. Bose’s own marketing materials even suggest what you can expect in that it “…delivers surprisingly rich and deep sound for a speaker of its size.” That’s precisely what you need to remember here…for what you get--a very small, unassuming soundbar that requires virtually no effort to install and operate--it manages a very capable, much-better-than-built-in-speakers, sound experience that capably (maybe even admirably) complements today's minimalist TV/design aesthetic. You don't HAVE to struggle with stringing little speakers all over your room or purchase a dedicated credenza or TV stand…this speaker will work very well if you have a small office, bedroom, or other media room where style, form, or space command at least as much concern as sound fidelity, if not more so. The Bose TV Speaker is a cinch to set up, as most Bose products tend to be. There are only 3 physical inputs hidden away at the back: an HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) port, one optical connection, and one 3.5mm analog port. There is a USB port on the back, but it is marked for "Service"...don't flip it around and think you can load MP3s or other files onto a thumb drive and play them back on this device. The TV Speaker also supports Bluetooth for those of you looking to stream some tunes or audiobooks without needing the TV running to do so. Curiously, the package includes an optical cable but forgoes a complimentary HDMI cable--both are pretty cheap to obtain so it's not a BIG deal, but I found this to be an odd omission because the most seamless integration of this device with a newer flat-screen TV is only possible via HDMI (more on that in a bit). The small 8-button remote is a bit chunkier (thicker) than most credit-card sized remote controls, but it is still small enough that it seems to beg to be lost in the couch cushions. Fortunately, the remote is IR-based so you can use a Harmony or URC or other universal/learning remote to capture the relevant signals. This may be necessary if your TV does not fully support HDMI-CEC control of the speaker and definitely for accessing the bass or dialogue enhancing adjustments that go beyond simple power and volume controls. We first tried the Bose TV speaker on our Panasonic plasma TV; it’s an older set that supports HDMI, but not the newer audio return channel feature, so we hooked up the unit via the included optical cable. The Bose remote control worked flawlessly with no input delay (thankfully) and we could quickly cycle between the TV’s sound input (helpfully depicted on the remote with a little ‘TV’ icon) and a streaming Bluetooth connection from my iPhone (which took less than 2 seconds to establish). It quickly became tiresome looking for the Bose remote just to power up and power down the speaker, but we later discovered that the unit can be placed into auto-wake mode so that it will power on when an input signal is detected…it will also re-enter standby mode after a while once the TV is turned off. We still needed to use the Bose remote for volume adjustment, so it’s not quite as elegant as a single, integrated remote or HDMI-CEC solution, but it worked pretty well. And once you’ve paired a Bluetooth device to the speaker, you don’t need the remote to put the TV Speaker back into Bluetooth mode to start playback—you can simply “force-connect” the Bluetooth input from your phone or DAP and the speaker will automatically cycle over to the Bluetooth input. Then we moved the TV Speaker to our workout room in the basement—that TV has a newer ARC-enabled HDMI port and the one-cable connection I think Bose was really shooting for worked exactly as it should. This was a far more compelling use case because the integration worked *very* well. When powering on the TV, or even a connected 4K player, the TV Speaker also powered on at the same time. Volume and power cycles worked from the TV’s remote and the only thing I really needed the original Bose remote for was bass enhancement and activating the dialogue mode. If you’ve got a newer TV with an ARC-enabled HDMI port, this is *definitely* the most seamless and easy-to-use employment of the Bose TV Speaker. As for performance…well, as the title of this review indicates, it was good enough to be “surprising”…for what it is. First, truth in advertising: using the TV Speaker in our living room on the Panasonic plasma was probably an unfair test because it’s a HUGE room with 14’ vaulted ceilings…the Bose is still a pretty small unit and even with the little bass port on the back and the bass level bumped to maximum, it just didn’t have the oomph to make for a very compelling viewing experience for something bombastic like a Star Wars or Marvel movie. But for dialogue-heavy TV (news, sitcoms, TV drama, etc.), the Bose did a really good job of clearly rendering the soundtrack without distortion even at high listening levels--clear enough that you could easily make out the soundtrack from the next room. The Dialogue mode actually DID do a good (and noticeable) job of enhancing the dialogue with only a VERY tiny and VERY infrequent hint of unnatural, DSP-sounding echo…honestly, the Dialogue effect really does do enough to enhance intelligibly of the soundtrack that we’ll probably leave the Dialogue mode permanently engaged. There are only 5 bass levels (2 boosts, 2 cuts, and one “neutral” setting) at your disposal; but bass adjustments, at least in our large room, were hardly noticeable from one level to the next. Yeah, we could tell the difference between maximum bass cut and maximum bass boost, but it’s not like “max bass” felt too overblown or muddy from neutral so we just ended up leaving it at maximum. The bass effect was more pronounced in our smaller basement workout room (as one might expect), but only just. By and large, the sound from the Bose TV Speaker was pleasing and more than serviceable, but I suspect you really need to add one of the Bose Bass 500 or 700 Modules to get more compelling performance out of this unit, especially if you intend to do any sustained or even “moderately serious” viewing with one of these units in tow. If there was one place where I personally feel usability could use a tweak, it's the display...or lack thereof. There are only two LEDs situated in the upper left corner of the speaker, each serving multiple roles to indicate active input, effect level, or status of all your interactions with the speaker. Green means Dialogue Mode is active, Blue is for Bluetooth, Orange and Red make an appearance supposedly only for updates/problems; but otherwise, it’s just a series of audible tones and white, not-so-bright-white, and unlit LEDs that you have to remember and interpret to know just what exactly is going on with the speaker at any given time. This definitely keeps the unobtrusive/minimalist design aesthetic and it mostly works; but the manual goes through a litany of LED color and flashing combinations and obscure "press this button for X seconds to activate” functions that you have to keep track of and remember what they mean…a small numerical/text readout that briefly appears and then disappears behind the grill would have been VERY nice. Still, many users can probably just set-it-and-forget-it for most functions anyway, especially if they’re able to integrate the remote either with a universal unit or via HDMI-CEC to the TV’s own remote control. Overall, we’re very pleased with the performance of the Bose TV Speaker; you probably will be too IF you set your expectations accordingly. I suspect most users looking to place this speaker with their primary TV will want to augment performance with a bass module as the low-end grunt just isn’t there to support anything but fairly tame soundtracks. But for a secondary set in a small bedroom or office, or somewhere that Bluetooth streaming would be handy to have along with TV sound reproduction, the Bose TV Speaker probably does about all you would need--and just a hair more--with simplicity of both design and system integration to sweeten the deal. Definitely a solid choice amidst today's rather crowded soundbar market.

Bose soundbar was easy to set up. I thought it would have more subwoofers/more base that would vibrate the room. I guess since it is such a small box it does not have that capability
