Customers are saying

Customers are positive about the exceptional sound quality, comfortable fit, and lightweight design of these earbuds, which many users find ideal for smaller ears. While the battery life and open-ear style are also frequently praised, some users have expressed concerns regarding occasional connectivity issues and a maximum volume level that feels too low. Additionally, a small portion of customers feel that the product is priced higher than its overall value.

Bose Ultra Open-Ear Earbuds – Honest Review

The Bose Ultra Open-Ear Earbuds are excellent when it comes to music listening. The open-ear design delivers clear, immersive sound while still allowing awareness of your surroundings. For enjoying music during walks or at work, they perform exceptionally well. However, call quality is not the strongest. People on the other side of the call often struggle to hear my voice clearly—possibly a mic issue, though I’m not entirely sure. If calls are a priority, these may not be the best option. One more thing I noticed: the sound quality becomes even better when I bend my ears slightly forward, which obviously isn’t practical to hold all the time :-) . This might be due to my ear shape not perfectly matching the intended design :-) , so the fit could vary from person to person. Overall, despite a few quirks, these are among the best open-ear earbuds in this price range, especially if your main use is music and comfort rather than calls.

The Bose Ultra Open-Ear True Wireless earbuds are a game changer. The open-ear design feels incredibly comfortable—I can wear them for hours without any pressure or fatigue. They stay secure even during workouts, but still let me stay aware of my surroundings. The sound quality is exactly what you’d expect from Bose: clear, balanced, and powerful. Music feels immersive, with great bass that doesn’t overpower the mids and highs. Calls are also crystal clear, and the noise management is impressive for an open-ear style. Battery life is solid, lasting easily through my day, and the charging case is compact and easy to carry. Pairing with my devices was seamless, and the controls are intuitive.

These are both great, and not great at the same time. The greats- they STAY IN PLACE. These will not fall out or off while running, which is specifically why I bought them. They also sound wonderful! The not as great- They sometimes switch listening mode on their own, so the music will sound surround and full, then switch to a more transparent, dull sound all of the sudden. Sometimes the only fix is simply opening the Bose app then it correct itself, so unsure whats going on. Or I'll get a weird connection interference sound mid songs if other bluetooth devices are around it. Since this pair can be updated, hopefully these are software fixes. Once fixed this is a definitely 5 star pair of headphones.

      Hey Matthew,

Many thanks for leaving your initial thoughts of the Ultra Open Earbuds! It's great to hear you chose this product for your music listening needs and it's fantastic to learn they have fit you well, especially when you've been exercising.

With your feedback regarding them switching automatically, this clearly isn't normal behavior and not something that is expected to happen so we'd encourage you to reach out to us so we can learn more about the problem. If it's happening randomly, I'd also suggest resetting the buds and setting them up as a new device to see if a fresh connection makes any changes to performance. You can find instructions for resetting the buds here: https://bose.life/4eSKFfe.

I've had 4 BOSE Earbud products go bad in a row

Positive notes first: ---- - The actual buds that go into your ears are comfortable, and the sound is great and seems to be very private while also allowing you to be aware of surroundings. I use it for hiking and trail running primarily. They stay put and are a great design themselves. The cons: ---- I was also a customer of BOSE for the Sports Open "over ear" series. Collectively: I have had to do 4 straight replacements of one variety of another with their products. For the sports open ear: I had to replace once two charging stands and a third replacement for a earpiece that went bad. For this new ultra setup: I now have my first charging case to replace. EACH of these replacements has occurred within 6 months to a year across the board. It was so frequent, in fact: that I remained within warranty with BOSE for all of my replacements of my BOSE sport. The bose ultra case managed to last me up until just past my 1 year anniversary with the product and so thus im stuck paying $100 for a replacement case on amazon. THeir charging stands and cases, simply put: are VERY cheap. You'll run into issues with the pins connecting or getting jammed into the small spaces. You'll feel the cheapness and how delicate they are. The only reason the bose ultra lasted the full year is I used them signifcantly less than my bose sport. Im confident they would've broken within first 6months to year as well had I used them as often as the sport open ear. BOSE is "getting away with this" with me as a customer simply by having a design that is superior to the competitors so far with open ear. However I cannot wait until competitors start to match them on good solutions for open ear wireless buds (not in-ear) because I am more than ready to ditch this brand. Their stuff simply does not last and you WILL be sending it back for a replacement if in warranty OR be replacing a case or bud soon enough. --- Note that for SOUND QUALITY, BATTERY LIFE, and CONNECTIVITY I'd give better star rating than "overall". Battery life I am giving a 2 star because in reality the battery charging is always an issue. However when you DO charge them the charge length is fine to get through a nice hike, etc. I've been happy with that piece when they actually work.

Good sound and high quality but not for me. I use them most in the gym and its nice to not have them right kn the ear. I find that the open ear though makes it hard to hear when there is so much noise around me.

I have larger earlobes, so they sit back further from my ear canal. I think for more normal sized ears this product would be even better. I could squish my earlobes for better audio quality and noise isolation, but the fit would no longer be secure. I personally find the spatial features to be gimmicky and turn them off for better battery life. Have had little bluetooth issues like some other wireless buds out there.

Good sound quality and impressive noise cancelling feature even though buds aren't fully in the ear. Pro - no in ear fatigue. The battery life is okay, could be better, but the buds do charge fast in the case.

Open ear headphones... doesn't seem what I need to drown out the noise. Decided to try them, and I have to say the fit is great and comfortable. The sound amazes me that it could be this good not even covering my ears. And nobody can hear them near me. Took a minute to find the right position for them but they have amazing immersive sound. Cant wait to actually try them in a louder environment. The fact that I forgot I had any headphones on is a plus. And they are easy to use. Easy setup and easy customization!

Not the Bose I Remember—Returned With Regret

The Bose Ultra Open Ear wireless earbuds just didn’t hit the mark for me—especially when it came to sound quality. I wanted immersive, enjoyable audio, but what I got felt flat and underwhelming for something carrying the Bose name. That said, my biggest issue isn’t exclusive to this model. It’s something I’ve noticed with multiple recent Bose Bluetooth headphones: the call performance has taken a serious hit across the board. The active noise cancellation (ANC), or maybe whatever processing is layered with it, seems to interfere with voice clarity. My voice is often transmitted lower than the background noise—leaving the person on the other end hearing more of my environment than me. With the Ultra Open Ear specifically, my wife and kids frequently told me I sounded like I was in a tunnel, or they’d hear their own voices echo back during calls. This happened whether I was moving in a car or even sitting stationary in my office. The clarity just wasn’t there, and it made hands-free calls frustrating instead of convenient. Bose still delivers on build quality and aesthetics, but they’ve drifted from the acoustic precision and reliability that made them a leader. It feels like the brand is leaning too much on its legacy—and less on making sure every new product is actually worthy of that legacy. I returned these, and I hope Bose takes feedback like this seriously.
