I'll start by saying these earbuds are not necessarily tailored for audiophiles. Mainly due to the open ear design, you'll probably never get really deep or punchy bass out of them which is difficult for in-ear buds as well). However, they do sound really good otherwise and do actually lean a little to the bassy side so you may even want to dial that back a tad with the EQ. But whether you're working from home, at the office, or simply going about your daily routine, they do a really great job of what they're meant to do. Which is allow you to listen to quality audio or take phone calls while also being aware of your surroundings. While it might be awkward putting them on at first, they really are comfortable. The design allows for extended wear without causing discomfort or fatigue, making them ideal for working all day or binge-watching sessions. You can easily forget you're wearing them, especially when watching a TV show or movie, due to their lightweight and unobtrusive build. Speaking of that, the immersive audio actually pleasantly surprised me. While they may not deliver the depth and richness of over-ear headphones, they do a good job of enveloping you in sound without completely isolating you from your surroundings. This makes them perfect for catching up on Netflix series or enjoying some YouTube content without completely disconnecting from the world around you. But if you don't like that, you can always just use them in the standard stereo mode that you might be used to. Their open-ear design also has practical benefits. Unlike traditional earbuds that seal off your ear canal, these allow ambient noise to filter through, enhancing situational awareness. This feature is particularly useful for outdoor activities like jogging or cycling, where being aware of your surroundings is essential for safety. But don't think exterior noises will overcome your music or calls. It's a weird sensation at first but wearing them at a normal listening volume, such as you would on a phone call, you hear the audio just like if you were wearing regular in-ear buds, but but if someone talks to you or the dog barks, or whatever, you'll hear that too. Now you alao can turn up the volume enough that you can drown out some or most of those outside sounds, but you're still going to hear those higher pitched noises coming externally (i.e. sirens, screams, barks, etc.) It's up to you really - the higher the volume the more you can drown out. So you can turn the volume up where you can clearly hear your music, etc. but still be able to hear and understand someone talking to you, or you can turn it up a little more and be able to hear them talking but maybe can't fully understand them. They really are very versatile in that aspect. They're really easy to use and unlike some earbuds, pairing them with your device is quick and hassle-free, and the controls are intuitive, allowing you to adjust volume, play/pause, and take calls with ease. However, they do have their limitations. As mentioned earlier, if you're a discerning audiophile seeking studio-quality sound, you may find these earbuds lacking. Additionally, the open-ear design means they may not be suitable for noisy environments where you need complete isolation from external sounds, so they're not going to be sufficient for use as PPE. I feel like you really do get what you pay for with these though. Yeah you can get better sounding earbuds for less, but you're not going to find anything as versatile as these. I find myself leaving them in my ears throughout my workday because I can hear everything same as if I have nothing on my ears, and if I get a call or want some music, they're already in. And I really do forget they're in at times. So after using these, I really can't see going back to in-ear buds (unless it's a situation I need PPE.) They really are that versatile and innovative. And don't get me wrong though in regards to audio quality, because that is subjective to different people. And these do sound good. Plus this is a gen-1 product and I haven't gotten any updates yet so I'm sure they will be taking user feedback and constantly improve them further. I would definitely recommend them and am even thinking about getting my wife and teenage daughter a pair.

The sound is great especially for me who prefers to listen to music and also stay aware of my surroundings. I really appreciate the uniqueness of the design. When I’m on the phone it’s hard for family/friends to hear me sometimes especially if theres noise being made around me though that’s one thing that for sure needs to be improved. Otherwise, its nice to have. The battery life is great on them as well.

      Hello,

Thank you for writing this review about the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds.

I am glad to hear that you are happy of the sound quality and the design of these buds.
If you experience any issue during calls, please check the following:
      - Make sure the microphone holes on the inner edges of the earbuds are not blocked, as it can causes poor sound quality for a listener on the other end of the call.
      - Be sure the microphones are not obstructed by headwear and that the earbuds are positioned properly on each ear.

This review is for the new Bose Open Earbuds Ultras. And just like all my other Bose devices these just feel like high end earbuds. I’ve only had them a few days but you can tell from the build quality they were made to last. They have very good sound quality. But the bass just isn’t the same as in ear earbuds or over the ear headphones. They use the same easy to use app as my other Bose headphones, so if you already have Bose stuff you don’t need a new app. So far the battery life has been great. I haven’t had to charge the case once yet. Using them a few hours each day and then keeping them in the case they have stayed charged the whole time I’ve had them. The new fit did take me a little while to get use to. But on the flip side you can hear what’s going on around you very well. So when out running/biking I can hear cars or trucks coming up from behind me. As to where I can’t at all with my other in ear earbuds. Also phone calls went very good. No one I talked with could tell I wasn’t just using my phones mic and speakers. All in all if you’re in the market for a new set of ear buds you should give these Bose open earbuds a try.

I was wary of these but should have gotten them sooner. The best way I can describe the experience of wearing these is, it’s kind of like having a really good sound system in whatever space you’re in. You can listen to these and everything around you, but the music, or podcast, or whatever you’re playing is private and insanely high quality, especially at lower volumes. The immersive feature is also pretty cool, and the battery is a monster. I was also surprised at how little sound leakage there is. It’s not particularly detectable unless you blast the volume, and you won’t want to. The only thing that’s not great is the call quality. I’ve tried a few times and don’t really like using them for phone calls.

These Bose open earbuds are excellent and are definitely worth it! Bose never ceases to disappoint me especially regarding the quality of the sound that comes out of any of their products. These ones not only sound good, but for a new concept of having open earbuds, I believe Bose hit it right out of the park. As far as the style is concerned, it looks nice and futuristic, but I think they could’ve done better. The charging case is rounded so it can’t stand, and it’s a little bigger than other charging case. The open concept is what makes it stand out since not many others, if any, have this. “Clipping” the earbuds on the ears instead of inserting it is a game changer. The earbuds themselves are lightweight. If not for audio coming out, I don’t think I’ll remember putting them on. Regarding the quality of the sound, because these are open earbuds, you won’t hear the bass and other minute details as well as you normally would if you have earbuds that you insert in your ears. However, it’s Bose so they made sure it still produced excellent sound. The levels are well balanced as usual, including the bass, and the dialogue is still crisp when watching videos. There are a few things I don’t like about this, besides not being able to get the best sound since they’re open earbuds. The bluetooth connection is spotty, getting disconnected at times. Also, I’m not sure what the reason is, but sometimes, the sound gets staticky which is a minor issue. It gets fixed right away just by moving the earbuds. The features are a plus. The immersive audio is pretty cool. The sound really seems like it’s coming from somewhere else. Either it’s stationary or it’s moving with you. The battery life is long. I used it all day, and it lasted for more than six hours. Charging it was very quick. Because they’re open earbuds, there isn’t a noise cancelling feature which is fine by me. I prefer to be aware of my surroundings. Surprisingly, as loud as it can get, other people seemingly can’t hear what you’re listening to. Overall, I believe the pros outweigh the cons. These earbuds are great. I definitely recommend this especially if you’re someone active. These really don’t come off. I shook my head violently, and it still stayed in place. Once again, Bose came out with a great product.

I recieved these as a gift on christmas, after a few weeks with them I can genuinely say that I am very pleased with them. These are different, I can wear them both at work and still hear all my surroundings, the sound they deliver is clear and encompassing. They have an odd way of filling a niche that I think does have a place in your daily life. They are really fun to use while excercising and playing sports as well as they are the first earphone I can wear while laying down that does not hurt my ear. These however are NOT the type of earphones you’d go to for bass or even a full experience for your music. The best way to describe them is to imagine you are carrying a speaker on you and it is firing from all sides, its there but not overhwhelming. It fills a spot in my cycle of headphones and earphones that I previously had not realized I needed.

The latest and greatest from Bose in earbuds. They sit on the outside of your ear rather than inside allowing you to listen to music, podcasts etc. and never have to stop having conversation with those around you. I work in IT in a corporate environment and these are great for staying connected and being available to provide support all day. Battery life is fantastic 8 hours on standard play mode, 4 hrs on immersive and the charging case gets you another 19 hrs of play time. You might be concerned about comfort but despite clipping on your outer ear these are so comfortable you will forget you are wearing them throughout the day. These are custom made for a particular user who wants to listen to music but be available to chat or listen to their surroundings all day. If you are looking for the best in ANC these are not the earbuds for you. Couple things the case is not wireless charging enabled and a since they don't go in the ear there is no real adjusting the earbuds they just clip on and sit. With the app you can do the usual amount of customization, firmware updates, edit what the buttons do. The buttons are mechanical push buttons not touch sensors which feels satisfying to push. If you are the user these were intended for you won't find any more comfortable earbuds to get through your day and listen to music while staying engaged in water cooler talk.

Decent open ear headphones, but not for big ears

These Bose earphones are an interesting form factor, using a tension on a coil to hold the open ear earphones around the edge of your ear above your ear lobe and place the speaker portion near your ear canal. This is good in theory, but it relies on the right size of ear to work properly, unlike other open ear earphones that have a band around your head or a small band that goes between the top of your ear and your head. I tried these, but my ears are far too big to use these properly. The barrel portion does tension around the edge of my ear above my ear lobe as intended, but the distance from where the speaker portion then rests on my ear is quite a distance from my ear canal, so the sound of the music is fairly low. Even when I have them at full volume, the volume I hear in my far away ear canals is mid level at best. I did test this by having people with more normal size ears wear them and they reported the sound was way too loud at full volume and they generally listened to music at about 35 to 40 percent of full volume. The sound quality is excellent. I could also observed that the speaker portion was much closer to their ear canal than on my ear. Definitely pass for those with large ears. The immersive sound options were very nice, especially the motion one, its pretty cool to hear the music move around you as you move, it must use an accelerometer to detect movement. The Bose app does tend to get confused and takes a bit to get reset when it has a hiccup, but it does this by itself, with no user intervention needed, and does it without restarting the app. I would recommend to try this if you have normal sized ears and want an open ear earphone that doesn't have any bands around your head.

    Perfect for outdoor runners

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I run outdoors a lot and I like to be aware of my surroundings because there are a lot of bikers and cars passing by and you never know what might happen. I learned my lesson when I had a close call with a car that lost control and I couldn't hear the honking with my noise cancelling ear buds (that would always wiggle out of my ear canal eventually). My left ear has a weird ear canal where most earbuds will rattle out eventually, which left me to utilize the ear hook style headphones when running. The only issue with the ear hook style is that they still shift more than I would like. The ear clip design of the Ultra Opens are a very new design that solves my specific problem. I can hear my surroundings and they don't wiggle around. In addition the sound quality is much better than my ear hook style earbuds. Now, I am not saying the Ultra open earbuds will be a bass head's first choice because without a proper seal you will not be getting any significant bass. For those that want to be aware of their surroundings and want earbuds designed for runners and bikers that want to be aware of their surroundings, then these are the earbuds you've been looking for. The one feature I wish these earbuds had is wireless charging. I think Bose really missed an opportunity by not having wireless charging.

Love these! I dont have to keep pulling my over the ear heads phones off, when ppl talk to me! Its great when you want to multitask. I use them when Im doing yard work, that way, I can hear cars coming. To me, I feel less rattling in my ears when I turn them up all the way. I did have to replace them once, because one stopped connecting to my phone. But if you have the Total Plus membership, they were replaced for free. No fuss no hassle. It was the best warranty experience I have ever had.

I dont normally write reviews but i have weird ear canals and used the UE fits until they broke. Saw these and as an audiophile i know Bose is hit and miss. In regards to other headphones that have open ear options like sony, shockz, ect these provide the best sound possible for an open ear concept with out noise leakage, very immersive and they dont slip at all.

Dont leave reviews often but thought i would share my two cents. I wanted an open ear pair of headphones for running. Tried the Cleer Arc 2 and returned them. They werent for me. Purchased these and they surprised me. Really love them. Very comfortable, good/great sound. And i dont feel anti socialt when i put them on because i can still hear whats going on around me (volume dependent). Needless to say i kept them and love them.

Bose Open Earbuds Ultra is an interesting take on the open headphone/earbud concept. As an audiophile that also suffers from chronic ear infections, Traditional earbuds are a challenge to keep clean and keep from creating or exacerbating ear problems. This open ear concept is a wonderful creation and much better than bone conduction earphones. The way the Ultras "clamp" onto your ear takes some getting used to but they are not uncomfortable. The nice thing is that the position can be adjusted. Unlike traditional earbuds, these have a look more like a thick earring so it's not obvious you are wearing earbuds. Sound quality is good and clear, however due to the design, bass does seem to suffer. In a number of places these give the effect that the sound isn't in your ear, but rather coming from around you in the room like traditional speakers. You can also turn on Auto-Volume which raises and lowers the volume depending on your environment. As to be expected by design, there is no noise cancelling function. For people that are concerned with safety, or need to be able to hear ambient sounds due to their work or environment the open design ear means that you can really hear everything around you. Pairing is a breeze with no issues across multiple devices. Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Iphone 14, Galaxy tab 8. The Bose app is intuitive and gives you access to all the extended functions. If you already have the app for other Bose products, it's simple to add these in. A couple of detractors are the price and which at $299 is a little steep (But in my opinion worth it) and the phone call quality. Listeners said I sounded far off, and I would have trouble hearing callers in louder open environments. These are great for active people. Riding a mountain bike, jogging, working out at the gym and even vigorous headshaking did not cause them to fall off.
