Luxury Wireless Audiophile Perfection
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Luxury around ear headphones are typically used for one thing - listening to music in the best possible quality. Everything else is secondary. These Bowers & Wilkins headphones have some expected conveniences, but first and foremost- they excel at audio perfection. Plus, they look really swanky! Of the built-in extras, the Active Noise Cancelation (ANC) is better than most and the Transparency mode is also good. Calls are nice and clear, and the battery life ensures that you’ll be set for marathon listening sessions.
Highlights:
* Built-in 24-bit DsP for exceptional sound quality.
* aptX Adaptive and Bluetooth 5.2 for great audio over Bluetooth.
* Supports the new BLE GATT audio profile for future compatibility.
* Supports Multi-point Bluetooth pairing.
* Better than average ANC with 4 microphones.
* Clear calls with 2 microphones.
* Good ambient passthrough (Transparency) mode.
* Can listen over Bluetooth or USB-C while charging.
* Easy to find and use buttons for local control.
* Long battery life of 30 hrs on a full charge with ANC on (15 min quick charge for 7 hrs of listening).
* Fold flat and store in case with room for included charging and analog audio cables.
Room for Improvement:
* Power light is not easy to see while being charged if folded flat.
* Cannot toggle between ANC and Transparent only.
* Have to choose between shortcut button toggling audio mode OR being able to trigger phone’s assistant.
* Ear pads are not removable or replaceable.
Setup:
Setup was about as easy as you can get. As always, plug ‘em in to ensure a full charge first using the provided USB-C cord and your choice of USB adapter. Charging takes up to 2 hrs and the LED turns solid green when done. By the way, the battery status LED is on the left edge of the right ear cup which when folded flat, is hidden so it’s not easy to see the LED light.
Install the Bowers & Wilkins Music App on your Android or iPhone and sign in with your free account. Turn on the headphones and slide the power switch to “pairing” until you hear the friendly lady say that pairing is enabled. The app should then quickly find and pair to your headphones.
There are a few basic settings you can change in the app, but nothing is required. Settings include things like what the shortcut button on the left ear cup does and the bass and treble boost (no EQ curves, though).
Once setup, you basically just turn it on and it reconnects to the last two devices you paired to (or used). There’s also audio confirmations for which sound mode you’re in, whether the battery needs recharging, etc.. The reset is just listening to whatever source you like.
Usage:
As with most around-the-ear headphones, the position of ear-cups is adjustable to fit your particular head. The storage case only fits the headphones when the cups are fully retracted, so unless you use them is this position, you have to adjust them for use each time you take them out of the case and adjust them back down to fit them in the case. Of course, if you don’t put the headphones back in the case after each use (or always use them in the most retracted state), then this doesn’t matter.
On the right ear cup is a power button that s slightly non-standard in that it its a physical toggle rather than a momentary tap button like usual. Slide the power button up to turn on the headphones and slide it back down to turn them off. When the switch is on, slide it up further and hold for a few seconds to put the headphones in pairing mode to pair to another device like your tablet or computer.
Below the power button is a trio of buttons that includes dedicated volume up and down buttons and the typical multi-function button. The multi-function button has a nice textured surface so you can easily find it with your finger while wearing the headphones and then easily find the volume buttons from there.
The only button on the left ear cup is a shortcut button that you can set up to either toggle the audio mode (ANC On, Transparency On or both Off), OR trigger your phone’s assistant (if applicable). If I had my way, I would make it so that the shortcut button does one of those options on a tap and the other on a long press, and you can choose which is the tap and which is the long press via the app. As it is, that button can do one or the other so if you choose to invoke your Assistant, you have to use the app to switch audio modes, etc.. Also, it would be nice if we could omit the “both off” option from the audio mode shortcut so that tapping that button toggles only between ANC ON and Transparency ON and skips the “both off” option. This is a nit, though.
The Napa leather-wrapped ear cups are supremely comfortable for long listening sessions as is the leather-wrapped headband. The overall design is very chic and sculpted with excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail. Even the case is well-designed with a compartment with a magnetic lid that stores the provided audio and USB-C cables.
All of this is the details and the fluff for headphones and is meaningless if they don’t sound good…. and these sound AMAZING! I listened to “lossless” audio of various genres via Apple Music on my iPhone 15 Pro Max as well as FLAC files on my dedicated audio player. These headphones revealed nuances in the music that I have never heard before!
Overall:
These headphones sound superb with all genres that I threw at them. They fit great and feel comfortable for hours of listening pleasure. The Hybrid ANC works well, the transparent mode works well, and they look fantastic. What more can you ask for in luxury wireless headphones?

These headphones are expensive, but they are the best headphones I have ever owned.
---Packaging--- Impressive packing, red case. Heavy, and hearty. The details start with leather pull strap and canvas case. The case also has a suede lined interior to protect these headphones. It’s a little larger than most headphone cases, but I appreciated the included storage (secured with a heavy magnet) for the charge cord and aux cord which include B&W branded velcro strips for cord management.
---Headphone construction--- Again, heavy but in the best of ways. Leather ear surrounds and headband. Metal construction with B&W branding imprinted on a brushed backdrop. Nicely weighted headband adjustments and solid hinges. These headphones take me back to a time when electronics where also a show of craftsmanship. Precision engineered to wrap around your head and provide an engaging sound experience.
---Sound--- I have never heard such clear sound from a set of headphones. I listened to my favorite songs, my life ballads, some anthems and I have never experienced such pure and defined notes. For the first time, while listening to a podcast, I heard the echo from the room they were recording in. Words were crisp, base was strong, and treble was clean. The noise cancelling reduce most of the ambient noise of the house and the vehicle I was riding in while testing. The headphones brought me into the booth with the artist and producer, gave me centered orchestra pits sound, and a wonderful immersive experience. One minor disappointment is that the paired app only offers treble and bass adjustment, while I was able to find a sweet spot for me, I would have expected a bit more in terms of audio adjustments.
---Function--- In addition to music, I used the phone to speak with a few family members and they said I sounded loud and clear. There is also an option to use the headphone as a wired set (with a 4ft included cable) and they still function as a headset for calls when using them in wired mode. I like the separate power slider with spring return for Bluetooth pairing. The dedicated volume and textured play/pause buttons, make adjustments easy to figure out, and there is no remember some crazy combination of swipes like some modern headphones. There is also an additional button that can be configured to control the noise cancelling mode (on, pass-thru, and off) or activate your device’s voice assistant. I have not needed to recharge them yet, but battery life so far is great and I am actually doing a little better than the quoted spec. of 30hrs.

Elegant & Exceptional

[PROS]
Top Tier Build Quality: The construction of the Px8 is about as high-end as it gets. The nappa leather cushion feels plush and allows me to wear these headphones for an extended period (2hr+) without any irritation. The band gentle contours to my head and provides a snug fit.
Usability: The B&W App is very straightforward in highlighting the controls and features of the headphones. The layout is very intuitive and not cluttered. All options are explained concisely.
Effective Noise Cancellation: The Px8 does is extremely impressive in shielding out external noise. The headphones fit over the ears which provides the first layer of noise cancellation. However, the actual implementation blocks out outside sound even when my volume was well below 50%.
Battery Life: Battery life is long. Unless my app is inflating the battery percentage, I've been able to heavily use these headphones daily without needing to recharge.
Sound/Mic Quality: Music seems to sound more vibrant and crisper with these headphones. There seems to be some subtleties that I've managed to pick out compared to other alternatives which is a major plus. The mic is above average in its delivery, but is hampered by environmental noise.
[CONS]
Wear sensor instability: My experience with the intelligent playback control feature was so-so. There were times where the audio paused expectedly when I lifted my earcup. Other times, the headphones failed to trigger a pause in the audio playback.
Pass Through Performance: I prioritized being able to hear external noise right below active noise cancellation (ANC). Despite the multiple mics and a lower music volume at the time, I still was unable to hear my spouse or even the television strongly as I would have preferred to.
EQ Settings: The biggest drawback in this area is that the only adjustable audio settings is bass & treble.
[CONCLUSION]
I enjoy the Px8, and it works exceptionally well as a daily driver. It sounds great, and feels even better. It's top tier in feel and performance. I would highly recommend it.

Warning to those who buy this! The headphones have a break in period of about 1-2 days (2-4 hours of listening) so when you first get them give them a few days. Once you get past that you will hear things so clearly. Sound signature is about half way in between Bose QC and apple AirPods Max. What I mean by that is that it has the warmth of the Bose headphones without the muddy textures. On the flip side it has the sound accuracy of the AirPods Max but more of a record player warmth. USB-c to iPhone 15 is compatible, sound quality much better corded but still amazing over Bluetooth. Comfortable, not as heavy as AirPods Max, with better build quality. The only thing that is subpar is the noise cancelling. It’s enough to drown out plane noise but it’s no where near as good as Bose. That being said, if you value sound quality over noise cancellation, these are for you. Price isn’t great but customer service makes up for it. Overall if you are an audiophile they are great headphones, and A worth while upgrade to get away from the big 2 (Bose and apple)

These headphones are definitely on the pricier side, but they offer incredible value for those who truly appreciate high-quality audio. The Supersoft padding on these cans provides perfect separation between you and outside world, even when you do not use the active noise cancelation. Few sounds make it through, so you don't have to blast your music to tune out the world.
These headphones excel in the comfort area. The leather earpieces and a light metal frame are staying securely in place when using the cans!
The sound is high quality. While using the mobile app base and treble can be adjusted, however, these are not the booming-techno-music headphones. These were designed for audiophiles.
The sound is velvety rich!

I love everything about the Bowers & Wilkins PX8 Over Ear Wireless Noice Canceling headphones. The included case and the headphones themselves are well made with the customer in mind. The soft side formed storage case has velvet lining and leather on the zipper. It has a magnetic flap that holds the charging cables. The headset themselves are adaptable to any size head comfortably. These are not plastic. They are steel and leather. The control buttons are on the sides of the ear piece. They are large enough to feel without guessing where they are. My fingers just glide over them. There are buttons for all the tasks I need to perform. It is so much easier to get the task I need than my previous headphones. I really like that all I need to do is find the right button. It took a little practice to get the hang of which button was for which task but it makes it so much easier than My previous headphones which had one button that I needed to press so many times for each task. .
I downloaded the FREE Bowers & Wilkins Music APP from the APP Store to set up the headphones. . It was so easy to set up my headphones and syncing was a breeze. I use my headset for music and love that I can easily answer phone calls. My phone calls are clear and I love that the headset is noise canceling so nothing interferes with my calls, podcasts, much or such. I really love my new headphones and they are the very best I have ever had.

I never really write reviews but felt like I had to for these things since I’m so blown away. Personally I do a lot of audio mixing and mastering with high end , high impedance headphones I plug into an amp. I’m really picky about sound quality. I’ve already purchased and returned several other pairs of headphones. What really impressed me Is their natural detailed sound. I feel like a lot of other offerings over process the sound, possibly to make up for other design constraints, to add artificial clarity, depth, and separation. These just have the naturally robust detailed sound like amplified analog headphones, but with the added benefit of anc. No artifacts or harsh artificial highs. Yea these things are pricy, but I wouldn’t call them overpriced at all.

I was contemplating to buy px8 or focal bathys. comapring them and watching reviews it is almost a toss up between these two maybe bathys slight edge. Px8 is significantly better looks than focal and sale price on black friday was tempting to buy it. I own focal eligia so i am familiar with focal sound. I find px8 a bit more slimmer vs focal. I am in break in period so it will get better like any headphones. Connects easy to iphone. Sound is better with high res audio from amazon hd service i have noticed better sound details. 1-2 hours is max i have used and i want to take them out for a breather i dont think any headphones will be good for 3-4 hours continuous use the pressure build up on head needs a beeak, the quality of sound is really depends on input it was quite evident in my listneing. I have momentum 3 as othe NC headphones. A decent NC is good enough for my use as i am not going to use in airplane or very noisy environment. In airplane use airpod pro is winner portability and quality of NC has no match. I think $700 is high price for it $500 is ok with quality of sound and finish. I chose the tan color just for a change from black headphones i have owned.

Highs mids and lows, all can be heard in both music and movies when using the Bowers and Wilkins Px8 headphones. They are built strong with metal components instead of all plastic and are also very comfortable. Some of the best noise cancelling iver ear headphones on the market as well, truly cannot hera any of the iutside world when immersed in my music or movies. Easy auto pairing to devices and will also auto switch between devices. Worth every penny and cannot recommend enough!

When I first unboxed this, I did a stretch test and the headband started to fall apart as the middle of the headband split open from the seams. I tried to pop it back in, but when I stretch it again, it would pop out from the seam. This already gave me hesitation as they are $700, I would have thought the build quality was going to be flawless. In all honesty, the headband felt pretty cheap to me and not worth the $700 price tag.
Beside the initial issue, everything else was great. The soundstage on these are fantastic. Notes are clear and warm. Unfortunately, there's only a 2 band EQ (bass/treble), so there's not much configuration you can do. I know if given a better EQ option, these would be top 3 for sure. So at first, I compared these with my AirPods Max and to be honest, the AirPods had a better soundstage. Though these have a warmer presence, the sound felt more like it was contained in a small space like a closet. There were times where it sounded muddy vs. the AirPods and that's with the default EQ settings. But I do feel that the clarity is better on these. The PX8 is 3 years old and I've read that there is a new version 2 model coming out this year. So I would wait for that one to come out as I am sure there will be improvements and more options.

These are my current ones. Sound, quality is top notch. You get what you pay for here. When you get into this level, expect real leather ear pads and headband. They look sexy. I have the forest green and love them. The app is a little finicky sometimes, but once you get setup, you really don’t need it. The buttons are great, takes some getting used to. Overall, I’d give them a 20 if I could. If this is not in your budget, then go with the QC Ultras.

These headphones made me realize that I am not an audiophile, and probably don’t want to be. I have had the Sony WH-1000XM3 for years and ADORE those headphones. I thought it was time for an upgrade and researched for hours, had super high hopes for the px8.
When I started listening I could immediately understand the hype. The sound is incredibly clear and detailed. But I pretty much exclusively listen to EDM. And the bass was just not there for me. I didn’t FEEL the music. Many people complain about the bass being too high on these. Those people are audiophiles, and I guess I am a basshead. I had to turn up the volume for the bass to sound loud enough, but that would make my ears hurt. I returned them and got the Sennheiser M4.
I will say these headphones sounded great for other genres. Radiohead sounds incredible in these headphones. You can hear every instrument super clearly.
Get these if you are an audiophile. Save some money and get the Sony’s or Sennheiser M4 if you are a basshead like me!

Best headphones I have. To take advantage of lossless audio be sure to use the usb-c cable to your device (my iPhone 16 pro max). Also in settings make sure to have download lossless audio checked and redownload your songs to use lossless (if you downloaded music before lossless was checked then you have to redownload to download in lossless. Very great headphones. Still sounds amazing for on the go with Bluetooth also!

I got these on sale and have been using these as my main headphones now. There usually is a break in period to warm up the drivers so they sound different from initial use vs hours of playing. So far they are my best sounding headphones. I have the airpods max, bose QC45, master & dynamic, etc. These are very comfortable and I can wear them for hours without any discomfort. Sound is very subjective to every person however for me- these have a sound signature I enjoy. My main use for these is purely for music. I am not concerned with things like transparency/noise cancelling, multipoint connections, etc as I have other headphones for those purposes. If you are looking for a pair of headphones that are comfortable and have good sound quality, give these a chance.
