In order to adjust this, rotate the circular ridged piece at the base of the mount. This will extend the base of the mount and widen it so that it fits snug in your cup holder. I'm sorry to hear you had some trouble getting your phone to stay secure in the mount –– there is a black circular piece on the back of the mount (on the ball joint) which you can twist in order to tighten or loosen the mount.
