Not for adults. Or little boys. Good for little girls. Character voice is annoying. Graphics were good.

What if you’d been told your whole life that you were destined for something you didn’t want? Worse yet, something you hated with almost every fiber of your being. How far would you go to change it? King Fergus and Queen Elinor (voiced by Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson, respectively) have four children. Their triplet sons Hubert, Harris, and Hamish, and there oldest, a daughter, named Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald). Before her brothers were born Merida (Macdonald) bore witness as a bear attacked her family and took her father’s leg. Subsequent to the attack, Merida, much to her mother’s dismay, has grown into a free spirit who rejects her mother’s influence. This doesn’t stop her mother from offering tips as to how a princess must behave on a near constant basis, however. And when Merida hears the ancient tale of a prince who broke off from his duty and caused his kingdom’s downfall, she rejects it without a thought. So, even with her daughter’s objections, the Queen holds a contest for the first-born sons of nearby allied clans. The winner will receive her daughter’s hand. As the first-born of her clan, Merida competes and wins, causing a rift that is exacerbated when Merida destroys a tapestry and the Queen retaliates by throwing Merida’s bow in the fire. Merida flees to the forest in anger and follows a will o’ the wisp to a cabin. The old woman inside first insists that she is a wood carver but changes her tune once Merida offers a family amulet in trade for the witch’s services. The witch gives Merida a cake and tells her that it will change her mother, leaving out a few minor details as to the nature of that change and telling her only that the spell becomes permanent after the second sunrise. Kelly Macdonald is tragically underrated as an actress. I first saw her in Two Family House, an independent film released in 2000 and then in the 2005 BBC film The Girl in the Café. She had some recent success thanks to Boardwalk Empire, but nowhere near what she deserves, in my opinion. She does a great job as Merida, and I feel similarly about the job Connolly does voicing King Fergus. Thompson does well, but the role doesn’t have anywhere near the same number of lines, for obvious reasons. The story is highly entertaining, as is the music. I will say that the ultimate consequence of the main character’s actions leave a little something to be desired. Still, a great time.

    A Fantastic Disney Film.

A Fantastic Disney Film. Brave is a quite good tale deftly told, filled with moments of insight, beauty and humor. And of course the animation is amazing. But in terms of content, it cowers ever so slightly. Bear rears and bare rears wriggle across the screen. Lords moon one another. Magic coats the Scottish highlands like so much dark frosting. Brave also can be scary. This place is populated by fearsome beasts, hidden dangers and unexpected threats. And the subject matter can play on a child's deepest fears. For sensitive, younger kids, Brave may well spark a nightmare or two. Which brings me back to something I wrote earlier: We've come to expect a lot from Pixar. Ever since the release of Toy Story in 1995, the studio has dazzled us with some of the finest, most family-friendly movies ever. In this humble reviewer's opinion, not even Disney in its golden age (1939-47) or renaissance (1989-2000) can match Pixar's present run. All of which sets up Brave as a bit of a disappointment ... except in the area of its familial lessons learned by both mother and daughter. They're not just magical: They're practical. They're discerning. And they're inspiring.

    Not what I expected

I thought this was going to be a kids movie about a girl finding herself and blah blah blah but I was pleasantly surprised when I realized it's for adults, too. I might spoil some things so beware. I'll do my best not to. PLOT: Wee little lass is a huge tomboy. Her parents agree to marry her to a qualified suitor. She doesn't like this, a witch gets involved, stuff happens, then we get to the end. It's a great story about parents not understanding their children and how listening more to each other, kids included, will clear up lots of problems. BLU RAY: I loved the look of this. The main character has long frizzy hair and each hair looks like it has a mind of its own. It's really beautiful to look at. Sound and picture are what I'd expect from a Blu Ray. EXTRAS: Short films, La Luna and The Legend of Mordu. There's a lot of other stuff like an alternate opening, commentary, extended scenes, and stuff I didn't watch so I won't comment on it. Overall, I thought this was a great buy. I was told it was funny and cool so I bought it on a whim. I was not disappointed.

Definitely strays away from the idea of needing a Prince Charming. Brave definitely sets the standard for the self empowered "princess" following her own path of discovery.

I had my reservations up front, because I love it when Scottish or Viking culture shows up in these kinds of things, and I didn't want to resent the movie for being another pointless animal transformation flick, but it's not. It's quite touching and well thought out. Quite good.

I just received this movie and BEST BUY tag lists it as a Brave RPKG! Physically the movies look fine and the Disney movie code works fine. I will update if there are any issues with the movies but I will not be able to watch every disc. I have wanted the 3D version and this was the best price for it. Even through the Disney club it is one of the more expensive movies so I always had to pay full price as the most expensive movie. I will definitely watch the 3D and Blu Ray though.

I bought this for my 3 yr old twin grandkids to watch. The only thing about it is that the one bear is rather frightening to smaller children. My grandson had no problem with it but my granddaughter was frightned of the bear. Other wise us adults really enjoyed it all.

Brave is a fantastic animated film. Both my children like the characters in this film better than most other new animated films. There is some rude humor, but all in all, the content is appropriate for most children.

I loved the setting of this movie, with the Celtic inspirations. Merida, the main character was developed well, for an animated character. The music was great. The animation was outstanding, as usual from Disney.

A decent film, is a misfire for Pixar

After the 2011 Pixar misfire with "Cars 2" I had expected for Brave to be much better. Only better by a little Not anywhere near Pixar's USED TO BE great story telling, characters, etc. You follow the story then you go into this weird story line that true you did NOT see coming BUT just went south from there. No spoiler alerts although I will say it had to do with Oscar winner Emma Thompson's Queen Elinor. For a 5 disc set, this SHOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER. I always look for extras like "Making Of" on Disney/Pixar films. NONE here, there are plenty of extras but none of real interest to me. They made a new Disney Princess that just stands out because of her appearance, the red hair. If you want to go to a GOOD liberated Disney Princess look at 1992's "Aladdin" for Princess Jasmine. It is a good film but NOT up to usual Pixar stands. If you want extras on your blu rays you got them but for me just not the type I want.

"Brave" is another Disney triumph - a great story, with compelling characters and lovely animation that's even better in 3D. Not quite as good as "Tangled" - but what is?

This is very entertaining but it just didn't "grab" me or my family as much as all the other Disney movies we've purchased... And we've purchased a lot! I can't say, specifically, what was lacking. We laughed and we enjoyed it but I would recommend RENTING vs. purchasing.
