Oven and microwave in one!

This thing pops corn like a microwave and cooks a brisket just like an oven! It doesn’t sear meat at all, and I had a really hard time cooking rice in it. But otherwise, it’s a sheer delight for cooking. The clock and oven functions are easy to set. Push or turn one of two knobs. It’s that easy adding time or raising/lowering the power level.

The Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 is a wonderful addition to any kitchen. This stainless steel beauty is compact but contains a very sophisticated and powerful combination of microwave, convection oven and air fryer capabilities.
Breville was founded in Sydney, Australia in 1932. It began as an electronics manufacturer then sold that unit in 1955 and focused on small appliances exclusively. Today it produces a premium array of counter-top ovens, coffee machines, grinders, juicers, cookers, food processors, blenders, toasters, griddles, mixers and microwaves (among others!) Breville’s stated goal is to create products which deliver innovation based upon consumer insights, empowering their ability to create more impressive results in home kitchens, more easily than they thought possible. The Combi Wave 3 in 1 certainly achieves that goal in every respect.

Like all Breville appliances, the Combi Wave 3 in 1 is beautifully designed and the quality of construction is very evident. It features a full, but very intuitive LCD display and control panel set into a stainless panel, augmented by six buttons, two large dials and two smaller buttons. Open the door and there is a column of one touch buttons to initiate common tasks, such as making popcorn, softening butter, keep warm, etc.) Putting these one touch buttons behind the door simplifies the appearance of the main controls – just another example of fine engineering by Breville.
The LCD display panel is large and contains all of the information needed during any cooking task. When no cooking program is active it just shows the time and the backlight is off. Open the door or touch any button and the screen brightens, moves into the default microwave mode, showing the power level and the cooking time (with 30 seconds as the initial time.) If your task just requires a microwave oven you are ready to go.
In microwave mode you will notice that this oven is much quieter, both in operation and when closing the door. The soft close functions like a fine automobile’s door, quietly and securely closing by itself in the last few inches. If you are annoyed by the slam of a typical microwave’s door, this will thrill you. When operating, the microwave is noticeably quieter. I assume this is due to the inverter technology which varies the microwave output as needed and also due to a much quieter fan. Inverter s allow the microwave to function are varying power levels, compared to conventional coils and transformers which require the microwave to run at 100% power, switching on and off during the cook time to attempt to achieve a similar result. But the varying power level of the inverter distributes the microwave energy more consistently, cooking food more evenly and greatly improving defrosting efforts (burned edges are typically eliminated.)
While Breville calls this a 3 in 1 oven it really could be considered a 4 in 1 oven. It can serve as a microwave (which heats food internally by using microwave radiation to excite water molocules), convection oven (which heats air and blows it around your food item to cook it by convection), air fryer (which also uses hot air but at a greater velocity) and a grill (which uses a heating element above the food tgo cook with radient energy.). The Breville Element IQ processor combines all four of these functions in a sequence and for the time as required to most effectively complete your cooking task.
To access the primary functions of the Breville you can just touch the appropriate button for microwave, grill, convection oven or air fryer, enter the time and temperature desired and start the process.
However, Breville has also cleverly programmed the preparation of many food items. If you touch the Food Menu button a list of fifteen items appears and selecting any of these will initiate the internal program. You will be advised on whether to use the included pan, its legs (folded or unfolded) and/or the wire rack. A preheating cycle may be initiated and there may also be instructions on any actions required (e.g., stirring in the mid-point of the preparation). While the cooking is underway icons will appear on the LCD screen indicating which functions (microwave, convection, air fryer, grill) are currently being used.
So how well does it work? Just great! I have already used many of these food preparation programs to make a variety of items (beef roulade, mixed (russet and sweet) potato French fries, a pear/apple strudel, Atlantic salmon, hamburgers with grilled onions, eggplant parmesan and pizza.)
In most cases I found that the pre-programmed settings did an excellent job of properly cooking the item. (See photos!) In some cases I needed to use the handy “a bit more” button to add time to the process but that was effortless. I did try the “from frozen” process for my salmon entrée and it worked well but I had to add quite a bit of time to bring the internal temperature of the salmon up to a correct level. To make pizza I would recommend using the wire rack and the convection oven feature rather than the crisper pan suggested by the food menu.
The Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 scores very well when you examine any of its basic features. As a microwave oven it is superb. The quiet operation alone sets it apart from its competitors but the inverter technology also gives very fine control over the power output which makes tasks like defrosting much more effective. Another great option is the ability to turn off the rotation of the turntable. This latter feature is essential if you need to use a rectangular pan for a specific cooking task.
I had some reservations about how good the results of the air fryer feature might be. But the ease with which I made delicious French fries swallowed those qualms as fast as the fries disappeared when I placed them into a serving bowl. I used the air fryer function on some other sliced vegetables and also achieved great results.
The convection baking feature was outstanding in both baking and protein (meat and fish) preparation. The pear/apple strudel had a nice browned crust with a juicy fruit filling. The meat and fish entrees were suitably seared on the exterior and the interiors were fully cooked but still moist and tender.
While you can use the grill function as a stand-alone cooking element, it does not seem as powerful as the broiling element of most counter-top ovens. I did grill with it but its best use is to add browning in conjunction with the convection or microwave functions.
There are really only three negatives I can note about this Breville oven. First, it would be nice to have the actual oven temperature displayed on the LCD panel. The device preheats in most cooking programs but you never know what the actual temperature is, just the programmed temperature. Some might like a wired temperature probe to use during operations but I prefer to just use a chef’s thermometer to test meat or fish, so I think probes are unnecessary. Second, the internal light is rather dim and it is a bit hard to actually see the food being cooked. Finally, I would like to see Breville include a recipe book or even just a nice set of recipe cards. They do provide a number of suggested recipes on their website but I think they should print those up and include them in the box. Alternatively, they could mail them to new owners upon registration.
But these are relatively minor issues. I find it hard to criticize such a great appliance and only offer them as suggestions in case Breville reads these reviews.
When you add up the superb individual functions of the Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1, the multiplied power of these functions through the Element IQ programming, the ease of preparation afforded by the food menu/one touch buttons and the elegant design and other advanced technology features of this appliance, the Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 has certainly earned a full five stars and my very enthusiastic recommendation!

Soft close is broken in a few months

The soft close door function has broken in a few months. When pushed to close, it will just hit the hinge and stop as if it hit a wall. It does not have a way where it can be slammed close like the simple ones do. It was one of the highlighted features we purchased this product for and for it to break in a few months with average to below average usage is pretty bad in my book. Whats worse is once the soft close doesn't work, it is harder to close the door compared to a regular $30 oven, you can't just close it, you have to take extra steps to push it in nicely as though it was soft closing itself, so its a solid 5 second TLC to the door EVERY time you want to close it, while opening and closing. It gets tedious very soon. I am working with their customer support and will update the review on how the issue gets addressed.

Breville Combi Wave - Cooking Perfection
My wife loves to cook for family, friends, and especially for our Grand Kids. So, when I had an opportunity to review the Breville Combi Wave™ 3 in 1 1.1 Cu. Ft. Convection Microwave in exchange for the actual product, I was delighted. My better-half is fantastic at planning meals and 'goodies' ahead for family and friends. But, our six Grand Kids present a unique challenge to her culinary skills, and last minute preparation. They pop-in often unannounced, and, are always hungry. They know Grandma can rustle up some sort of 'Snack-Plate' quickly to keep their tummies happy. In the past her snacks have been mostly cold items out of the fridge, and, or, food-stuffs heated quickly in our ancient microwave.
When I first received this unit I was impressed with its build and design. The whole cabinet is made of metal, brushed stainless steel at the front of the unit and polished SS in the interior of the cooking oven. It easily fits on my kitchen counter top, however it requires a minimum of 8 inches of clearance from the top of the unit for proper heat dissipation (see pic). Grandma immediately fell in love with this Breville Combi after reading the included Instruction Book and going over the recipes for this unit on-line. She made me pack-up our toaster, convection oven for 'Good Will', and toss our old microwave in the recycle bin.
She said the six cooking food functions with their various settings enabled her the assorted options to quickly cook most anything for our family, guests, and Grand Kids, resulting in healthy cooking too. WooHoo! The majority of time it is just me and Grandma, so the 1.1 cu ft multi-purpose oven is our ideal size.
Bottom Line – Why should you buy this Breville Combi Wave for over Four Hundred Dollars?
** Multi-Function Cooking – This Breville Combi actually replaces, my old microwave, smallish air fryer, and convection-toaster oven. It saves much needed counter space in my kitchen. It also keeps us from using our large (5 cu ft), energy consuming, freestanding, convection oven. And, because it has 'Fast Combi' we can combine microwave, convection cooking, and oven grilling into one cooking process, which cooks foods to CRISPY perfection. When the Grand Kids show up out of the Wild-Blue-Yonder, Grandma can now quickly cook frozen burgers or sliders just like the kids want them with added cheese or garnishes. YUM!
** Intuitive Controls – At first I was overwhelmed by the myriad of cooking controls and numerous options. However, after two weeks of using this baby several times a day. It is an easy learning curve if it is used often. The generous 2 ½ by 3 ½ inch digital display screen is easy to read and very comprehensive. The bright whitish/bluish tinted background, contrasted by the deep blue lettering on the digital display screen is amazing. There are six cooking function buttons on the front of this unit. We can cook almost anything from frozen to refrigerated with these comprehensive cooking functions. Or, just simply use this baby as a microwave with numerous features over conventional units. I personally love the 'AirFry' button feature. Whatever I put in this Breville, Fries, Brussels Sprouts, Cauliflower, Broccoli, etc. it cooks it to a Crispy-Perfection. Yahoo!
** Shortcuts Panel – On the inside of the front door panel is the most fascinating vertical list of icon, touch-controls. They are simple, but effective. I can set the clock, use the 'child-lock', set unit measure from Celsius to Fahrenheit degrees, and program the 'Favorites' functions, which I use the most on this Combi Oven. I can cook popcorn, melt chocolate, and butter from these touch icons. I can also set the volume of the 'beep' after any function is completed, change the sounds, and Mute them also. And, I can utilize the 'Grill' feature, or, just keep my cooked food on 'Warm'. How cool is that?
** Smart Cook, Reheat, & Defrost – This is one Smart Microwave. Under the 'Food Menu' settings I can choose to cook, reheat, or defrost my selection. Under cook I can choose from popcorn, hard or soft veggies, rice, bacon, cake, cookies, butter, chocolate, pizza, nuggets, fries, chicken, meat, and, or fish. What is fascinating is that I can adjust my cooking to Quantity, and, or Weight. WoW!
** Healthy & Delicious Food – Fast Combi and Air Frying gives us sumptuous foods without the heavy, cholesterol, fatty oils, and greasy tastes. So glad that the crispy, air-fry food tastes so great without the added cooking oils.
** Plus Features – Rotating, glass round turntable. Super-Quiet operation. Half-way through any cooking time-cycle, the digital display will prompt me when to 'Turn-Over' the food in the combi crisper, or microwave dishes. Love It! Great Feature!
** Clean-Up – After each use of the Breville Combi Wave Oven, the manufacturer suggests to wipe down the interior of the oven with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Always use a dampened cloth first.
** TIPS – Use microwave cooking dishes and covers for more even cooking and results that are more more true to the suggested cooking times. Microwave plate and dish covers contain splatter and make clean-up a 'breeze'. Microwave-safe cookware is OK for reheating leftovers, etc, but, not for cooking in the recipes. If what you are attempting to microwave is very dry and has little moisture – hand sprinkle water droplets on the food items for more efficient cooking results. Use trivets or oven-safe pots and bowls to elevate your food items so that the 'Oven' convection cooking function can circulate hot air under your cooking dish and all around for complete cooking.
** Summary – This Breville Combi Wave 1.1 Convection Microwave is actually a multi-purpose cooking appliance, all-in-one. It microwaves, cooks food as in a convection oven, air-fries without conventional oils for healthier cooking, and grills with top, conventional heating elements. What more do you need? I love this Breville unit because Grandma loves it, and uses it to make many gastronomical feasts. It would make a outstanding gift to your 'Special-Someone', family member, or friend. It is a great gift to yourself, believe me, you won't be disappointed.

The Combi Wave by Breville packs in up to 4 cooking methods in one medium sized appliance. It has a commercial quality and appearance to it both inside and out. The stainless face cleans up easily, which you'll be needing since it catches a lot of fingerprints! I put it through its paces and I have mixed results about the various features. The 4 cooking methods are convection, grill, airfry, and microwave; these are either used alone or in combination depending on the type of food and size. First of all, be sure to read the owner's manual before you decide to use it; it's not just a microwave and also not an oven, but can do both. That was my confusion when deciding to use the smart feature to cook a pound of sirloin tips in the included crisper pan. Since the weight wasn't sufficient, the smart cook feature used a combination of convection and microwave giving me an end result of boiled meat. Had it been 1.5lbs. however, it would have foregone the microwave in favor of the grill function which I'm sure would have provided more desirable results.
As a microwave, it has features and shortcuts that work great. Melting butter and dark chocolate was perfect using the shortcuts found with the open door. The butter gets to the perfect consistency to fold into a mixer bowl. The soup shortcut first defrosts then heats using the inverter, comes out hot but not blazing, just right.
The convection oven works well if you use the crisper pan or have a baking dish that conforms to the turntable. Using larger rectangular pans causes uneven cooking (the turntable can be stopped). Baking financiers in a rectangular silicone mold caused the ones to the left to burn considerably compared to those on the right.
Airfry mode produced excellent results the 2 times we've used it, first to bake an artichoke struedel for 15 minutes (crispy, flaky, nicely browned), then sweet potato quarters for 10 minutes.
Now we get to why it's called 3 in 1, Fast Combi uses 3 different methods together for up to 50% faster results depending on the food. We baked 6 bacon wrapped chicken thighs using the crisper pan with legs (high position) in 20 minutes and the result was impressive, the chicken fully cooked, semi-crisped bacon sizzling in its own fat reduction! It used a combination of Microwave, Convection, and Grill to achieve such great results.
The smart cook menu also offers combination cooking methods depending on the food being done.
The only thing this failed at miserably was cooking frozen pizza. The smart cook setting says to put the pizza in the crisper pan, but it's too small to hold an entire personal pizza of 12 inches so while cooking, it sagged into the pan. It used a combo of microwave and convection that failed to even melt the cheese at the 12 minute time setting listed on the box. When comparing to convection alone in a Breville Smart Oven, on the center rack, the pizza was bubbling and crispy in 9 minutes.
This Combi Wave 3 in 1 is great for so many things and I would recommend to anyone who is short on kitchen space to fit a full size oven. But this is countertop only, they don't suggest using it in a cabinet nor do they provide a forward venting heat deflector (yet). Just make sure there's still room for your toaster, still an invaluable kitchen tool.

Revolutionary Upgrade For the Microwave

What’s in the box:
Trivet. Crisper pan. Glass turntable. Turntable roller. Instruction book.
Microwave: 1200 watt (perfect wattage for quick cooking time)
Convection oven: 1400 watt (fast)
Grill: 1100 watts
Appearance: The stainless steel look of this microwave goes well with my stainless steel appliances in my kitchen.
Function Buttons: There are 6, of which most are self explanatory. They are Microwave, Air Fry, Oven, From Frozen, Fast Combi and the Food Menu. Once you press one of these buttons you need to set the temperature and cooking time. The screen will have directions for all the steps.
Food Menu: When you push the Food Menu button it will state Cook, Reheat and Defrost. From there you turn the Start dial to select a preset item that appears and follow the instructions on the screen.
From Frozen: This function/button uses two stages to defrost and cook your food, microwave to defrost and Fast Combi mode to cook the food. The different cooking stages are displayed on the screen, so that when the second stage is ready to start that is when I add my seasoning, if I haven’t preseasoned it before freezing.
Fast Combi: A very unique feature. It uses the convection oven, microwave and grill to cook food faster than a regular oven. You need to make sure to use the crisper pan when using this selection to help brown whatever dish you are cooking. Select a time and temperature to use this function. For ideas on cook time and temperature look at the Instruction and Tip sticker on top inside your microwave.
Quiet: A wonderful feature is that this microwave has a soft close door that closes itself with a little push and makes no noise. You can mute the timer for less noise also. I really like this when I am up late at night and don’t want to wake anyone in the house up while heating a midnight snack or even popping popcorn. When you turn the microwave on, it is very quiet. My old microwave was loud enough that you knew it was on and cooking.
Inside Door Panel: There is a panel inside the door when you open it. This includes Favorite, Child Lock, Units, Set Clock. Then the Quick Start Menu: Grill, Keep Warm, Melt Chocolate, Soften Butter and Popcorn. Sound button – this is for the sound that alerts you when a function is done, beep volume and mute button.
Turntable: If you don’t want the turntable on, you can turn it off by pushing the Turntable Off button. To put it back on, simply push it again.
Extra 30 Second Feature: Push the Start button and this will add an extra 30 seconds to your cook time. With each press of the Start button it will add another 30 seconds.
Child Lock: Great for a family with little curious kids. Open the microwave door and there is a panel that includes this button. Just press it and close the door and all operating functions are locked. What a great safety feature that I have not seen on any other microwaves that I have looked at.
Just to clarify – The Air Frying function is used for crisping your foods without the oil involved. It is much healthier than frying in oils and yet you can still have the pleasure of the crispiness of your favorite fried foods.
I highly recommend cooking with this appliance. I made a delicious pork roast using this. It came out juicy on the inside, yet crisp on the outside. I have full confidence in using this appliance more than any other I have ever had. It is so much more than a microwave.

Premium Oven - Many Options

This oven is perfect for someone looking for many cooking options in a single device. Smart features and solid construction make a worthy addition to a great kitchen.
Pros
- Premium look and feel. Screen, knobs, and interior light all look great. Even the tones for alerting you to completing a step or finishing cooking a musical - no shrill beeps like a normal microwave. Interior is all stainless steel.
- Soft close door is really quiet
- Fast and even cooking (3lbs eye of round roast in 60min, apple cinnamon pound cake in 40 min).
- Crisping pan is easy to clean
- Computer helps determine cooking time and method, with on screen prompts (actually works well, very smart)
- Doesn’t get super hot like a cheap air fryer or toaster oven
Things to Consider
- Complexity may be an issue for some. You have to read the manual. Multiple functions and modes, many settings, you have to set the position of the pan for different cooking or use the included trivet for baking.
- Air fryer results weren’t bad, but not quite as good as I wanted. We tried fried shrimp; they cooked well, but were more done on one side than the other (I might flip next time them - despite what the recipe says).
- The crisping pan legs are extended for air frying limiting the height of what you can cook (to less 4in).
- It is deeper than a normal microwave or toaster oven due to an extension on the back. So it takes up a good amount of counter space and technically can’t be placed under some cabinets (the instructions have a clearance requirement of 8in that seems super conservative - it doesn’t get that hot).
It does have a few quirks, but once you get the hang of it, this oven produces great results.

Over the past couple of years, we have amassed several new kitchen appliances. We are slaves to trends in our house and have three crockpots, two air fryers, and two electric griddles. It’s a mess. So, when I saw the Combi Wave 3-in-1 as an option to replace my gigantic microwave and have a better option for air frying, I took the leap. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. I thought there was no way that this ‘microwave’ could make crispy food items in the same way that our air fryer could. And it couldn’t possibly bake a cake…could it?
Getting the Combi Wave set-up isn’t a lengthy process, but understanding everything it does, is. For basic functions, you simply select the mode you want the device to cook with — for example, if you want to use the microwave, press the microwave button. After selecting the mode, you turn the top dial to indicate the length of time you want something to cook and then you press ‘start’. If you need to adjust the temperature or cooking power you turn the bottom dial. That pretty much covers the ‘basic’ functions of the Combi Wave. To be honest, I still haven’t covered all of the advanced settings on the cooker yet. I do, however, keep the manual close at hand so that I can refer to it often.
As a microwave, the Combi Wave does a great job. Since we’ve had it we’ve used it for some smaller cooking jobs like warming up leftovers and cups of coffee. My grandmother has been very happy with how well it reheats her coffee and also loved how evenly it seems to reheat food. The most surprising feature of this device is the Air Fryer mode. We have used it to make chicken quesadillas many times. We have been shocked at how well it heats the food inside the tortilla shell and how toasted the outside of the shell was. Finally, I used the convection oven to bake some potatoes. It takes approximately the same amount of time to cook them in the Combi Wave as it does in the standard oven, but it’s much more convenient when you need to use the oven for something else. It’s been a remarkable kitchen appliance to add to our collection.
The look of the Combi Wave is top-notch. It has a stainless steel finish and looks professional. The door has a soft-close feature that makes the door softly latch closed. The device is quite powerful and has a lot of customizable cooking options if you are willing to take the time to figure it out. Even though there is a steep initial investment, this does combine several kitchen appliances into one. I can recommend this to all types of users, but be prepared to study a lot to get the most out of it.

Fantastic microwave, air fryer as Breville is the best and has many options for popcorn, from frozen food, to various vegetables that you have a presetting. Easy close door that closes securely on its own. This is just the number one and I would definitely purchase this one again over any other brand or model. Beautiful and easy close door with all of these functionalities, makes it well worth the cost.

I love this microwave! I have a separate air fryer, but in my house, we are constantly using it, and this just takes the pressure off of it. You can cook anything just about in it, and it’s fairly easy to use. The soft-closing door is kind of a gimmick, but it does make a difference. I only wish the door lock could be disabled. I’m sure there is a way to change that, but I haven’t figured that out yet. Overall, Breville did pretty good here.

Bought this as a gift for my wife so we could upgrade our microwave and get rid of the toaster oven to free up some counter space. Love the look and the soft close door is unexpectedly a one of my favorite features. The interior is smaller than our old microwave and it cooks a bit slower. We’ve had a few minor explosions with uncovered food, and cleaning is a bear! There’s a heating element on the top, and it’s almost impossible to clean around it. I’ve tried the air fry option and it’s ok, but not remarkable. As an oven, it takes a while to preheat, and there isn’t an indication of current temp. It does throw off a LOT of heat from the sides and back. Using the included tray is cumbersome, and if you open the legs, it’s super close to the oven top, not leaving much room for tall food. Tending to avoid the oven use due to cleaning challenges. We like the concept of dials for time and power settings, but the feel is cheap. Hope they last. Finally, an illuminated clock would be helpful.

I just love my Breville combi wave! Makes me glad my old microwave broke. This machine is so multi-functional, beautiful and quiet. Using the food menu makes it so easy to use, just select and start! I've been using the air fry function a lot! I've used the convection oven feature a couple times and, of course, the microwave. The soft close door is so cool and the oven is so quiet that no one will ever know you're heating up leftovers in the middle of the night. It even makes me more enthusiastic about cooking and trying new things.
