In the pictures both online and even on the packaging, the matte black option looks black. It’s actually more of a blueish slate color. More gray than black. I can’t speak to how it toasts because I am returning it for a refund. It matches nothing in my kitchen.

This toaster is made to seem high quality by having a high price tag and some fancy looks. However, it is simply a cheap toaster with some rose gold colored plastic. The main button is wobbly and cheap. The stainless steel looks horrible! The finish is soooo bad! To top it all off... This toaster shorted out after 8 uses! In the first week this thing just died. Best Buy won't replace it and GE Cafe has gave me the run around. Buyer Beware!!!

Mine is a brushed silver with beautiful copper accents. It will be replacing a 4 slice toaster and I was a bit concerned about it doubling the time for our breakfast bagels and English muffins. I took it out of the box and note that it is simple in its elegance. There is the copper slider, a copper knob that sets the light/dark and cancels, and 4 buttons, two on each side of the slider: bagel, express finish, reheat and frozen. There is a side drawer that pops out to empty the crumbs. The cord is pretty long, but comes out under the front of the toaster which is inconvenient. There is a cord wrap guide that allows you to direct the cord to the back but by its design shortens the length of the available cord. The plug, unlike my old toaster, is three prong. I only mention this because I wound up needing a good extension cord to make it work in my spot. (Not generally a good idea to use an extension cord but sometimes necessary, hence “good” extension cord). Once you plug it in, the knob has a light around it. The heating elements hold the bread very firmly ensuring more even toasting. There is a pictograph on the top of the unit that indicates the correct way to position bagels so that the inside is toasted to your desired degree, but the outside stays soft but warm. I love the express function. It solves my biggest worry which was sacrificing time when toasting for two. The express does exactly that, faster toasting. All in all I really like my new toaster. It is beautiful while being very good at its job. Sadly, it is also very expensive. After all it is still just a toaster. If you can afford it and, especially if you have the full suite of the GE cafe appliances you won’t be sorry.

I have the KitchenAid toaster that you drop the toaster is the slot, it automatically goes down and toasts. I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought this toaster. I guess I liked the fact it matched the coffeemaker, not a good reason to buy a toaster. I put the KitchenAid back on the counter.

Select a lower setting next time if your toast is too dark and a higher setting if your toast is too light. You can also check to make sure that the frozen button is not selected.
