Great all around camera for video logs and more!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a single sentence the Canon EOS R50 is an excellent feature packed camera for your everyday shooter, vlogs, and a lot more. In the box you get the following: EOS R50 camera body RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Standard Zoom Lens Camera cover Neck strap Lens cap Battery charger LC-E17 and pack LP-E17 Battery cover Various papers The camera itself is very well built, compact, and a lot lighter than expected even with the lens. It feels very solid and premium in the hand even with the plastic parts. The flip screen is very easy to read with all the necessary info needed to get your shot or video just right without information overload. The touch screen is very responsive and despite being fairly small I never had an issue where I was pressing something I wasnt intending to activate. Feature wide it has everything you will need if intend to use it as your go to shooter, or if your planning on video logging with uploads to Youtube, etc. It has multiple shooting modes if you want to just shoot and upload, or if you like to tweak things afterwards. Even with the auto modes selected pics and video came out amazing. Everything from auto, to food mode, to HDR, and everything in between its fun to try all the different modes to see exactly how each changes your pics and vids. Uploading to my phone for extra storage or to view content for quality, or directly to my laptop to edit the the final cut was simple and just worked. The battery life was great for pics and I would say adequate for videos. I plan on getting an extra battery for those times where you dont have a charge port available. But if anything I would run out of room on my SD card before the battery was done. It also comes with a nice selection of free programs as well. And the Canon app was easy to use with all the features I need so getting set up and going was a lot easier than with previous cameras. Overall like I said in the beginning this is the perfect all around camera if you just want to take excellent pics and videos. But if you need more it has all the features needed for high quality video logging as well. So if you to be able to just have one camera to do it all this is a great choice. Looking forward to trying even more of its settings and features to improve my shooting!

Great lightweight camera!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Canon EOS R50… This is an entry level camera? Not quite… The pricing indicates it is, however once it’s in your hands you will feel otherwise. TLDR - If you are looking to get into photography or vlogging, look no further than the EOS R50. Pros: > This camera is super lightweight. Makes for taking it anywhere almost a no brainer as you can easily pull it out to begin pointing & shooting. > Autofocus is very good. Like very good!!! Given the price point, i was surprised at how it was able to keep up with moving targets & targets coming into view (whether snapping a shot or recording a video). > The vari-angle touchscreen allows for versatility whether point & shooting or vlogging. Anyone looking to get into content creation will definitely be happy with this camera. > The A+ Assist is actually not too bad, especially when you hand off the camera to inexperienced hands such as my 8 year old son. Would say 3 out of 4 photos came out with decent to great quality shots with occasional ones which were not. > Burst shot capabilities were very good. Was afraid the camera would overheat, however I was able to get many sequential shots without any issues. > Battery life is good, considering i had sessions where i took 100+ photos and still had enough juice to keep going. Cons: > The location of the USB C charging port is less than ideal. May get in my way one day if i forget to bring spare batteries and have to use the battery pack to charge it while shooting. > Lens selection is limited… Overall, this is a great little camera with a lot of versatility. Highly recommend especially for those looking to get their feet wet with content creation!

Great all around camera!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Canon camera is a great camera with lots of capabilities. It is a lower end model and does a decent job with whatever paces input it through! It has tons of capabilities. It comes standard with a RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Standard Zoom Lens, shoots 24.2 megapixel shots with up to 15 frames per second, a nice liquid crystal display which is viewable from many angles, and more. Having a moveable screen is really nice in those tight situations or when you have the need to raise the camera over heads that are blocking your view. This is a real easy camera to learn to operate and take great pictures and videos with. You will need to purchase a memory card as one is not included with this product. For those people who have never used a digital camera, a memory card stores all of your pictures and videos. Remember that videos utilize quite a bit of memory, so if you are planning on making or taking videos, I highly recommend a large capacity memory card. I fooled around with the video capabilities of this camera and was impressed with the cameras video quality as well as it’s picture taking capabilities. Videos were smooth, not jittery, and had awesome color definitions. As compared to my other camera which is triple in price, video quality was equal or better with my Canon. I give the Canon manufacturers a lot of credit with this camera! I think it important that users that might be interested in this product understand exactly what a mirrorless camera is. A mirrorless camera lacks a “reflex mirror”. Light passes directly through your cameras lens onto the systems digital sensor. During this step your image is then displayed onto the camera’s screen. At this point you can tweak and adjust the cameras settings prior to the actual shot! You can fix the pictures composition and lots of other things. The Canon camera has less moving parts and less items to wear out and break. I have an older DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera which has a reflex mirror. It is a high end camera and when I do a side by side comparison of photographs there is not much of a difference between them. The Canon takes awesome pictures and videos, is much more compact in nature, and much lighter and smaller. You really can’t distinguish differences between the two unless photographs are enlarged substantially and printed. For all intents and purposes, I rarely print anything larger than an 8” by 10” photo meaning that there is no discernible difference in a printed photograph. This camera is a lot of fun to use and take videos with. On a trip to the Everglades I took some awesome videos of all sorts of wildlife. Video was absolutely stunning and I’m very happy with the results. Learning all of the capabilities of this camera will take you a little time and practice. This is a great all around camera so take it on vacation and put your phone camera down. I highly recommend this product.

Nice camera for content creators
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently received a Canon EOS R50 Digital Mirrorless Camera. I’ve had a few days to try it out and put it through its paces. It is heavily geared towards the Internet Content Creator, but I’m going to review the camera as a whole. This version of the EOS R50 came with an RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS lens. It’s a nice lens. There are, of course, other lenses available for the camera which greatly increase its flexibility. I found that this one works well for portraits, landscapes, and general everyday use. It has image stabilization built in so you don’t need to utilize the digital image stabilization that is also available in the camera, but at the loss of a little frame size. The camera takes great pictures and videos. It can take pictures at up to 24mp and video can be shot at 3840x2160 or 1920x1080 at 59.94fps, 29.97fps, or 23.98fps. They offer Standard and Light IPB compression when recording. There is also an option to record at 1920x1080 at 119.9fps but when recording at this frame rate, audio is not recorded. Something that took a while to find is how to connect the camera to your computer for livestreaming. There is an option on the 4th yellow setup screen saying “Choose USB connection app”. After selecting this option, you can select either “Photo Import/Remote Control”, “Video calls/streaming”, or “Canon app(s) for iPhone”. Selecting the second option allows your PC to see the camera and allows you to use it for streaming. There is an android application that you can use with the cameras. It allows you to see the images that are on the camera, remote live view shooting, auto transfer photos to your android device as they are taken, control camera settings, display the camera user guide, and much more. There is also an iPhone app which I would assume has similar capabilities, but I don’t have an iPhone to try it out. Overall it’s a great camera. It does have a number of drawbacks however. First of all, keep in mind that this camera does not have a full frame sensor. It utilizes an APC-C sensor, so to determine the crop factor of the lens you have to multiple by 1.6, making this lens functionally equivalent to about 29mm – 72mm. If you are using this for vlogging, this is important because you will appear very large in the frame unless you are using a tripod set some distance away from you, or you have very long arms. You can see this in the pictures I’ve included. Both are shot at 18mm. The 1st is shot with my arms fully extended. (I’m 6’3” and have long arms.) The 2nd is shot holding the camera at a comfortable distance from my body. Another issue is the fact that you cannot charge the unit as you are using it to stream or record. If the USB port is set for video, the camera will not charge with the USB cable plugged in. If you want the camera to run on external power, you will have to buy a dummy battery which will allow you to operate the camera from an external power source. You also have a 1 hour streaming limit. Once the hour is up, you can restart streaming right away, but it is a limit built into the camera that you need to be aware of. Another issue is that in place of a standard hot shoe for the flash, Canon is using their new “Multifunction Port”. This means if you don’t have an accessory built for this port, you will have to buy an adapter to allow the use of any other hot shoe accessories. A minor issue is the placement of the USB-C and Micro HDMI ports. They are on the right side of the camera. If you are using either or both of these ports, it is nearly impossible to hold the camera for handheld shooting because the cables are located where your hand should be. The last issue is the RF-S lens mount used on the camera. This is a proprietary connection allowing only Canon to make autofocus, and auto-anything lenses for the camera. You will only be able to use lenses that Canon designs for this specific mount. Despite all of the negatives that I mention, I still think this is a great entry level Mirrorless Camera system. It takes great photos and videos, has a tremendous number of options, is very customizable, and easy to use. The integration with your smartphone and PC makes it a great tool for content creators and vloggers. It is far superior to using any smartphone by itself for these purposes. Canon should make a few tweaks to their next version, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Canon EOS R50: A Compact Powerhouse
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Canon EOS R50 Camera is a mirrorless camera capable of shooting 4K video or still shots. This 24 megapixel (compact sensor APS-C) camera is light in weight and comes with an 18-45 mm zoom lens, built-in stereo mic and a built-in flash. The monitor screen tilts and swivels so you can use it in different positions, perfect for still shots where you are behind the camera and for videos where you are in front of the camera. The EOS R50 has HDMI, USB and mic input/output ports on its sides and a standard tripod socket on its bottom. UNBOXING Place the battery in the charger, and plug the charger into any A/C wall socket. Then unwrap the camera and lens and install the lens. Install the shoulder strap and the charged battery. SETUP If you have never used a digital SLR camera, or are not familiar with how a Canon digital SLR works, you might want to read the instruction manual first. You can go to the Canon start page for the EOS R50 to find the instruction manual, advanced user guide, software, and more (see screen shot). Turn on the camera and set it up either from the menu (menu button > wireless icon), which asks you to scan a QR code with your smartphone to download the Canon Camera Connect App, or by adding this new camera to the app, if you already have it on your smartphone. Wireless connection allows you to use your smartphone as a camera remote, to upload photos to Canon, connect to the EOS utility, or print photos on a WiFi printer. Use the Menu button to adjust Camera settings, Autofocus, Playback, Wireless, etc. Insert an SD card into the slot next to the battery and format the card using the Menu. NOTE: SD Card not included. SHOOTING I tested the Canon EOS R50 in still and video modes, indoors and outdoors, using a 128 MB SDHC (SD high capacity) disk. Even though I am familiar with Canon DSLR cameras, and have taken thousands of videos and photos, I still had to search the User Manual for a couple of items. If you are a newbie, try using the camera set to Automatic; when you are comfortable with the camera, you can learn more of the advanced capabilities. This Canon has sharp, true-to-color images and works well in low light situations. The range of ISO ("film speed") and shutter speed settings allows great shots in a range of lighting situations. You can set the camera to shoot using Auto or Manual exposure, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Video, and more. The built-in flash provides works well on its automatic setting, or you can set it manually (See photos with and without flash). PROS The Canon EOS R50 has features—and pros—too numerous to mention. Here are many that come to mind: - small, lightweight and easy to carry - zoom lens has STM (stepper motor) image stabilization - can record over 2 hours of 4K video and 9 hours of standard 1920 x 1080p Full HD (FHD) video - Bluetooth connection for a computer, smartphone, tablet, and wireless printer - tilt and swivel touchscreen works well for stills and videos - intuitive user interface with buttons and/or touchscreen to change settings and scroll through images - camera shoots in RAW, JPEG, other formats - OLED viewfinder with diopter adjustment on the eyepiece - auto and manual exposure settings, auto and manual focus - hot shoe for external flash or other accessories - self timer and remote operation (with smartphone or optional remote switch) - detailed user resources available online (see screenshots) CONS - The numerous features and settings can be overwhelming to a first-timer (start with default settings). - The diopter adjustment switch is hard to find (look under the eyepiece). - The supplied lens did not auto-extend when the camera was turned on or retract when turned off (you can extend and retract it manually). OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES The camera works well as is. At a minimum, I recommend: - 49mm lens filter and a lens hood to protect the lens from damage. - a spare battery, especially for long shoots. Some of the key accessories to consider if you are a serious hobbyist or social media influencer are: - Canon EOS RF 55-210 mm zoom lens (or buy the EOS R50 kit with two zoom lenses). - Canon mount adapter (to use EF and EF-S lenses on the R50). - Canon external stereo microphone and Speedlite flash. - Tripod(s)—desk and/or full-size for videos, long exposure or high-speed action shots. - Ring light for shooting videos indoors. The Canon EOS R50 is an excellent lightweight, compact entry-level camera with serious features that you would expect in a more expensive, professional camera. The 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor provides loads of capability. You can shoot 4K videos over 2 hours, and standard Full HD videos over 9 hours. A micro SD card can store hundreds of images, even when shooting in the RAW + JPEG image mode.

Great Mid-Range Camera
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great camera overall because it has plenty of features and it is lightweight and compact. Videos: Very good picture quality. Lighting and Auto-Focus works very well which means there is less work for me to do. Camera seems to heat up relatively quick, so I had to keep my videos short. I think I can resolve this by making some changes in the settings. Also recording videos drains the camera battery quickly. Photos: I have a lot experience shooting videos, but I am still a novice when it comes to photography. I like the way everything is setup. I can navigate easily and find the mode that I want, but then I can also do a lot tweaking of the settings and features once I find the mode I need. The images I took with this camera are very sharp. Battery life is great when using the camera for only photos, but I think I will purchase another battery to be safe. Being able to connect the camera via WiFi or Bluetooth is a good option for remote operation. For transferring videos and images, I will stick to the USB to my computer. This is a great camera and I will be taking it everywhere with me to get some amazing shots and footage.

Compact Powerhouse with Excellent Imaging
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Image Quality That Wows: One of the standout features of the Canon R50 is its exceptional image quality. The camera captures stunningly sharp and vibrant photos, producing impressive detail in every shot. Whether you're shooting landscapes, portraits, or action-packed scenes, the image clarity and color accuracy will leave you in awe. Video Recording that Keeps Up: If you're into shooting videos, the Canon R50 won't disappoint. The camera's video recording capabilities are top-notch, especially when it comes to maintaining focus on moving subjects. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the camera adapted and kept the focus locked on my subjects, even as they moved through the frame, and I maneuvered the camera to follow them. This feature ensures your videos are consistently sharp and professional-looking, regardless of the action happening on-screen. Lightweight and Compact Companion: This camera is incredibly lightweight and compact, making it perfect for on-the-go photography. Whether you're traveling, attending events, or exploring nature, the sleek design and manageable size make it easy to handle and a joy to use, even for extended periods. A Lens Compatibility Quirk: It's worth noting that this camera is not compatible with previous-generation lenses like those I have for my EOS 6D. If you're upgrading from an older Canon model and have invested in these lenses, you may need to consider purchasing new lenses or an adapter to enjoy the full potential of the R50.

Gives a taste of the world of DSLRs
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Virtually everyone has a camera in their pocket cell phone cameras have come leap and bounds coming to the point where point and shoot cameras from that era have more or less gone the way of the flip phone as well. Save for vloggers and the the niche who prefer the dedicated camera. The Canon EOS R50 is an entry level camera will be a step above that. Then there are those that are serious about their cameras which this is definitely not directed toward. The EOS R50 is an affordable package geared for beginners who may not know exposure vs. aperture. It's a lightweight package that includes a screen that you can flip around to take selfies or vlog, simple to learn with a low barrier of entry with easy to use and flexible autofocus that can be customized. The camera was too not heavy to spend the day out on the trail either strapped to my wrist or hanging from my Black Rapid sling strap. I appreciate the sharp view finder as well as the rotating screen that can be flipped over to be protected and use the view finder only, flipped around with live image preview or flipped out to use to take selfies or vlog. One of the best things about the camera was the Bluetooth connectivity. Utilizing the app I was able to easily and quickly transfer all the photos I wanted immediately to distribute without having to download the from the card. Additionally I am able to use my phone as a remote shutter and secondary view finder. You have to love Bluetooth. Though at the end of the day the R50 is still a very entry level package. I found that Canon used an older image sensor which is less than stellar in low light situations and can lead to slightly dull photos. But in a well lit outdoor environments, the R50 is quick and images look better than those taken with my Samsung S22+. I was able to take a lot of photos of my kid who never seems to stop and using the intelligent autofocus I was able to just concentrate on staying on her without having to fumble with all the various settings. The R50 is easy enough to use that my 7yr old took some great photos and some videos with it over things she found interesting and even of herself. The R50 appears to be marketed toward vloggers and social media types, but it should be noted that videos will cut off at about 1hr. I'm not sure if its due to overheating issues, but honestly even filming for more than 20mins on an entry level camera is an ask. Not the worst thing to start another clip. The cost saving do show when you start to dig further into the R50. Lack of in body image stabilization means added cost for more expensive IS lenses. The body of the camera is not sealed so it won't be weather or dust resistant so try not to get caught out in the rain or use it in extremely dusty environments. The SD card reader is UHS-I so it will be slower to write photos. For the price point I am not suprised the a lot of the features are omitted. For a simple to use entry into the daunting world of both mirrorless cameras and full on DSLRs the R50 is a great gateway device to learn on. It is a welcome break from pointing my phone at everything.
