Canon EOS R50: A Compact Powerhouse

The Canon EOS R50 Camera is a mirrorless camera capable of shooting 4K video or still shots. This 24 megapixel (compact sensor APS-C) camera is light in weight and comes with an 18-45 mm zoom lens, built-in stereo mic and a built-in flash. The monitor screen tilts and swivels so you can use it in different positions, perfect for still shots where you are behind the camera and for videos where you are in front of the camera. The EOS R50 has HDMI, USB and mic input/output ports on its sides and a standard tripod socket on its bottom. UNBOXING Place the battery in the charger, and plug the charger into any A/C wall socket. Then unwrap the camera and lens and install the lens. Install the shoulder strap and the charged battery. SETUP If you have never used a digital SLR camera, or are not familiar with how a Canon digital SLR works, you might want to read the instruction manual first. You can go to the Canon start page for the EOS R50 to find the instruction manual, advanced user guide, software, and more (see screen shot). Turn on the camera and set it up either from the menu (menu button > wireless icon), which asks you to scan a QR code with your smartphone to download the Canon Camera Connect App, or by adding this new camera to the app, if you already have it on your smartphone. Wireless connection allows you to use your smartphone as a camera remote, to upload photos to Canon, connect to the EOS utility, or print photos on a WiFi printer. Use the Menu button to adjust Camera settings, Autofocus, Playback, Wireless, etc. Insert an SD card into the slot next to the battery and format the card using the Menu. NOTE: SD Card not included. SHOOTING I tested the Canon EOS R50 in still and video modes, indoors and outdoors, using a 128 MB SDHC (SD high capacity) disk. Even though I am familiar with Canon DSLR cameras, and have taken thousands of videos and photos, I still had to search the User Manual for a couple of items. If you are a newbie, try using the camera set to Automatic; when you are comfortable with the camera, you can learn more of the advanced capabilities. This Canon has sharp, true-to-color images and works well in low light situations. The range of ISO ("film speed") and shutter speed settings allows great shots in a range of lighting situations. You can set the camera to shoot using Auto or Manual exposure, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Video, and more. The built-in flash provides works well on its automatic setting, or you can set it manually (See photos with and without flash). PROS The Canon EOS R50 has features—and pros—too numerous to mention. Here are many that come to mind: - small, lightweight and easy to carry - zoom lens has STM (stepper motor) image stabilization - can record over 2 hours of 4K video and 9 hours of standard 1920 x 1080p Full HD (FHD) video - Bluetooth connection for a computer, smartphone, tablet, and wireless printer - tilt and swivel touchscreen works well for stills and videos - intuitive user interface with buttons and/or touchscreen to change settings and scroll through images - camera shoots in RAW, JPEG, other formats - OLED viewfinder with diopter adjustment on the eyepiece - auto and manual exposure settings, auto and manual focus - hot shoe for external flash or other accessories - self timer and remote operation (with smartphone or optional remote switch) - detailed user resources available online (see screenshots) CONS - The numerous features and settings can be overwhelming to a first-timer (start with default settings). - The diopter adjustment switch is hard to find (look under the eyepiece). - The supplied lens did not auto-extend when the camera was turned on or retract when turned off (you can extend and retract it manually). OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES The camera works well as is. At a minimum, I recommend: - 49mm lens filter and a lens hood to protect the lens from damage. - a spare battery, especially for long shoots. Some of the key accessories to consider if you are a serious hobbyist or social media influencer are: - Canon EOS RF 55-210 mm zoom lens (or buy the EOS R50 kit with two zoom lenses). - Canon mount adapter (to use EF and EF-S lenses on the R50). - Canon external stereo microphone and Speedlite flash. - Tripod(s)—desk and/or full-size for videos, long exposure or high-speed action shots. - Ring light for shooting videos indoors. The Canon EOS R50 is an excellent lightweight, compact entry-level camera with serious features that you would expect in a more expensive, professional camera. The 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor provides loads of capability. You can shoot 4K videos over 2 hours, and standard Full HD videos over 9 hours. A micro SD card can store hundreds of images, even when shooting in the RAW + JPEG image mode.

This is a great camera overall because it has plenty of features and it is lightweight and compact. Videos: Very good picture quality. Lighting and Auto-Focus works very well which means there is less work for me to do. Camera seems to heat up relatively quick, so I had to keep my videos short. I think I can resolve this by making some changes in the settings. Also recording videos drains the camera battery quickly. Photos: I have a lot experience shooting videos, but I am still a novice when it comes to photography. I like the way everything is setup. I can navigate easily and find the mode that I want, but then I can also do a lot tweaking of the settings and features once I find the mode I need. The images I took with this camera are very sharp. Battery life is great when using the camera for only photos, but I think I will purchase another battery to be safe. Being able to connect the camera via WiFi or Bluetooth is a good option for remote operation. For transferring videos and images, I will stick to the USB to my computer. This is a great camera and I will be taking it everywhere with me to get some amazing shots and footage.

I recently purchased the Canon R50, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. The image quality is outstanding, with vibrant colors and sharp details, even in low light. The autofocus is incredibly fast and accurate, making it perfect for capturing action shots. I also appreciate the 4K video capabilities, which produce high-quality footage for my video projects. The camera is lightweight and easy to handle, with a user-friendly interface that makes it a joy to use. Overall, the Canon R50 is an excellent choice for both beginners and enthusiasts looking for a versatile and high-performing mirrorless camera. Highly recommend!

Image Quality That Wows: One of the standout features of the Canon R50 is its exceptional image quality. The camera captures stunningly sharp and vibrant photos, producing impressive detail in every shot. Whether you're shooting landscapes, portraits, or action-packed scenes, the image clarity and color accuracy will leave you in awe. Video Recording that Keeps Up: If you're into shooting videos, the Canon R50 won't disappoint. The camera's video recording capabilities are top-notch, especially when it comes to maintaining focus on moving subjects. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the camera adapted and kept the focus locked on my subjects, even as they moved through the frame, and I maneuvered the camera to follow them. This feature ensures your videos are consistently sharp and professional-looking, regardless of the action happening on-screen. Lightweight and Compact Companion: This camera is incredibly lightweight and compact, making it perfect for on-the-go photography. Whether you're traveling, attending events, or exploring nature, the sleek design and manageable size make it easy to handle and a joy to use, even for extended periods. A Lens Compatibility Quirk: It's worth noting that this camera is not compatible with previous-generation lenses like those I have for my EOS 6D. If you're upgrading from an older Canon model and have invested in these lenses, you may need to consider purchasing new lenses or an adapter to enjoy the full potential of the R50.

Virtually everyone has a camera in their pocket cell phone cameras have come leap and bounds coming to the point where point and shoot cameras from that era have more or less gone the way of the flip phone as well. Save for vloggers and the the niche who prefer the dedicated camera. The Canon EOS R50 is an entry level camera will be a step above that. Then there are those that are serious about their cameras which this is definitely not directed toward. The EOS R50 is an affordable package geared for beginners who may not know exposure vs. aperture. It's a lightweight package that includes a screen that you can flip around to take selfies or vlog, simple to learn with a low barrier of entry with easy to use and flexible autofocus that can be customized. The camera was too not heavy to spend the day out on the trail either strapped to my wrist or hanging from my Black Rapid sling strap. I appreciate the sharp view finder as well as the rotating screen that can be flipped over to be protected and use the view finder only, flipped around with live image preview or flipped out to use to take selfies or vlog. One of the best things about the camera was the Bluetooth connectivity. Utilizing the app I was able to easily and quickly transfer all the photos I wanted immediately to distribute without having to download the from the card. Additionally I am able to use my phone as a remote shutter and secondary view finder. You have to love Bluetooth. Though at the end of the day the R50 is still a very entry level package. I found that Canon used an older image sensor which is less than stellar in low light situations and can lead to slightly dull photos. But in a well lit outdoor environments, the R50 is quick and images look better than those taken with my Samsung S22+. I was able to take a lot of photos of my kid who never seems to stop and using the intelligent autofocus I was able to just concentrate on staying on her without having to fumble with all the various settings. The R50 is easy enough to use that my 7yr old took some great photos and some videos with it over things she found interesting and even of herself. The R50 appears to be marketed toward vloggers and social media types, but it should be noted that videos will cut off at about 1hr. I'm not sure if its due to overheating issues, but honestly even filming for more than 20mins on an entry level camera is an ask. Not the worst thing to start another clip. The cost saving do show when you start to dig further into the R50. Lack of in body image stabilization means added cost for more expensive IS lenses. The body of the camera is not sealed so it won't be weather or dust resistant so try not to get caught out in the rain or use it in extremely dusty environments. The SD card reader is UHS-I so it will be slower to write photos. For the price point I am not suprised the a lot of the features are omitted. For a simple to use entry into the daunting world of both mirrorless cameras and full on DSLRs the R50 is a great gateway device to learn on. It is a welcome break from pointing my phone at everything.

I recently got to review the Canon EOS R50 and I have to say that it is one of the best cameras I have ever owned. The R50 is a fantastic camera for both beginners and experience content creators alike. Setting it up was simple thanks to the Canon Connect App that makes transferring content from the camera to your smart device and controlling the camera from your smart device extremely easy. You can also use your smart device as an external monitor which is extremely helpful for remote shooting scenarios. The camera body itself is lightweight yet solid, providing excellent ergonomics and featuring controls that are easy to access and operate (albeit simpler controls to a higher end camera). It has a good selection of ports for connecting external accessories such as microphones or flash units. In addition, the R50 offers several features that make shooting more productive and enjoyable such as Eye Detection AF, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, 4K video recording at 30 fps (oversampled from 6k), Full-HD high-frame rate movie recording up to 120fps, 12 fps Electronic First Curtain (15 fps Electronic Shutter Continuous Shooting), HDR Movie Mode and more. The image quality is outstanding – with the 24.2-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor and DIGIC X image processor, photos taken with the camera are incredibly sharp and detailed, even in low light. The autofocus system is incredibly fast and accurate (up to 651 automatically selected AF zones during Whole Area AF), making it a great choice for action photography and portraits. With automatic subject detection and tracking, keeping your subjects in focus is very easy. The digital viewfinder (OLED, 2.36 million dots) is bright and clear, making composing shots or tracking a subject much easier than with an optical viewfinder. The 3.0 inch, 1.62 million dot Clear View LCD touchscreen makes it incredibly easy to compose and shoot from almost any angle. It’s easy to changes settings and you can use the touchscreen to quickly define or move the autofocus point. Overall, I would highly recommend the Canon EOS R50 to anyone looking for a high-quality camera that can capture beautiful stills and videos without breaking the bank. With its excellent build quality, fast autofocus system and advanced features, it's sure to please photographers of all levels. This is a fantastic camera for anyone from a beginner hobbyist to seasoned professional that needs an extremely compact, lightweight camera for their varying needs.

The camera is everything I needed for a beginner. I bought and gave this camera to my wife who wanted to do what I do, but she did not feel comfortable with my professional cameras. This is lightweight, has all the options for a beginner, and can even be upgraded to reach professional level quality with the addition of lenses a top mounted flash. Overall great quality! Be sure to get a camera bag for it!

I was a little intimidated by this when I opened it up. This thing feels expensive and so solidly built. The packaging was super nice and everything felt really secure. I love the cover for the camera and the lens so everything is secure when it's not in use. I don't feel as nervous that I'll scratch anything or damage it since the delicate parts are all protected. I was pleasantly surprised to see the screen was a touch screen as I have something similar from another brand without that feature. Set up was super easy and the app connected pretty quickly as well. I love that you have the ability to share the pictures straight to your phone vs. having to plug it into the computer every time. I like the size of the screen on the back for reviewing pictures on the fly. The automatic mode seems to be the thing I'll use most as it figures out how best to take the picture in front of the screen. I used this for random pictures of my kids and things outside as well as for my business. I rely on whatever camera I'm using to be able to pick up small details and this camera does amazingly well with that. I've been having fun seeing what the automatic mode can do and love that it reminds you to open the flash if you have mixed lighting to make sure your pictures are properly lit. This did really well with action shots as well and previous camera's I've had struggled with that. I was able to get some amazing pictures of my kids running and playing sports. I'd highly recommend this to anyone looking to go above and beyond what your smartphone camera can offer and was really pleased with everything that came included for the price. If you want something built well and that should last you won't be disappointed with this camera.

The image is incredibly sharp, with true-to-life colors and excellent balance. Even in low light, it performs really well—minimal noise and solid focus. The autofocus is fast and accurate, which makes a big difference for both video and action shots. It records in high resolution, making it perfect for professional content or social media. I received my first camera many years ago. It was a Canon AE-1 I received as a college graduation gift. As the years went by my trusty camera allowed me to show my creative side. Over time, my career and family obligations put an end to that hobby. Until I retired went to Best Buy I found my new Canon Camera. Excellent design. Reasonably lightweight. Makes taking great pictures very easy. Great price point. Once again I can see the world through my wonderful camera taking beautiful pictures. I can tap in again to my creative side.

Great camera for photo and video. In my opinion I would just buy the body and then invest the money saved into a prime lease since that’s what’s truly important rather than the camera itself. Bigger aperture, clarity, image balance and stability, colors and over all quality of the image. The camera is very pretty, it’s not heavy, pretty good battery and easy setting and custom settings.
