I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who is making the leap from point-and-shoot to DSLR photography. This is no longer the newest camera in the Rebel series, so it might not have the latest and greatest features, but it is beyond adequate for a beginner DSLR photographer's needs, and is therefore an excellent value! With the T3i, there's a nice stepping-stone learning curve. You can decide whether you'd like the camera to do all the work, or whether you'd like to shoot manually, or anything in between. The instructions are very clearly written and easy to understand, so you can quickly learn and advance into the more "pro" features. Since this camera has been around a while, you can also find other books and resources that explain how to use it. I found the camera very easy to figure out, even without reading everything in the manual ahead of time. Once you understand the functions of all the buttons, you can very quickly and easily manipulate the settings -- it is easy to make fast changes while hardly looking at what you are pressing. Photo quality is great. It's not a multi-thousand dollar piece of equipment, so of course you're going to be sacrificing some image quality over a high-end professional camera. But for the average person this is going to be plenty good enough, worlds away from a cheap point-and-shoot or a cameraphone. I can fill my giant iMac screen with these photos and be blown away at the quality. I have really surprised myself with several "WOW" images. The image size is large enough that it leaves you plenty of room for cropping. This camera, despite being more towards the "entry-level" side, is highly expandable and something you can "grow into" by purchasing additional lenses and accessories. Another way you can "grow into" this camera is by shooting RAW images and learning about that whole process. The camera has the option to shoot a RAW image and a JPEG at the same time, if you prefer, which is a nice feature if you're not ready to make a full jump to RAW. As far as I'm concerned, battery life is excellent - though the book warns of shortened battery life with live view / video shooting and use of flash, of course. I have not taken this camera on a multi-day adventure yet, but I have had no problem shooting over 300 photos without the battery indicator moving toward the "charge soon" indication. I compared this to a large lineup of Canon DSLRs online and in-store. Although I'm of the female/smaller-hands target market of that lighter-weight, smaller-sized Canon Rebel SL1, I found the SL1 to fit awkwardly in my right hand, as if I would drop it. Plus, my thumb rested upon (and pushed) a button. Your mileage may vary. This was actually a dealbreaker for me that sent me back in the T3i/T5i direction. The SL1 and some of the other Canon models also do not have a swivel LCD like the T3i. I like how the T3i's swivel LCD flips around for storage, to prevent damage. The swivel function has already come in handy when I had to reach over a wire fence. When comparing the T3i to the T5i, the reason I went with the T3i was the lower price and not feeling like I needed the next step up yet.

Picture quality and video quality are awsome! Light weight and easy to carry around all day. Abundent settings to get whatever type of picture your looking for. Great battery time. Articulating screen makes this camera a breeze to use in any position and the quality of the screen is outstanding. 18 mp stills and 30 fps video makes for fantastic pics and HD 1080p videos on my 55 inch big screen. Professonal quality all the way giving you the best of both worlds in one camera. You'll have many years of enjoyment with this baby. I highly recommend it!

    Great or Enthusiasts

This is a great camera, incredibly easy to use compared to its competition nikin d5100, i have had both shooting at the same time, the built in flash is not that great in the canon compared to the d5100, ISO is great in semi low light situations, but once you get to 4000 or so 6400 the pictures can get a little noisy. The focusing on the canon is pretty fast considering this is a camera for Enthusiasts. I will say this over all I love this camera and I would prefer it over the Nikon bc of the easy of the menu IF you are using it in manual mode more then often, in the Nikon every thing seems to take a series of extra steps to get to what you want (ISO, White balance, ETC), so IF you are serious about photography and you are seriously learning and interested in becoming a pro, you will quickly outgrow this camera and would suggest getting one in the 2k rage at least, other wise, the price of this camera, quality and all the features make it a steal if you would like to takw casual great pictures.

Great! But get a good memory card

Great camera, takes amazing quality pictures and has a nice clear swivel screen. I have a transcend class 10 memory card and when testing movies in 1080, after about 8 seconds the camera stopped recording automatically. the reasons for this is either overheating (this wasn't the case) or a bad memory card. I am going to get a sandisk extreme III card to see if this issue goes away (hopefully my camera isn't defective?). Once this happened, I was able to restart recording, and I only had the problem in 1080, not in 720 so hopefully the new card will prevent this. You can only use the cool digital zoom in 1080 video so I want to be able to use it. Also I LOVE the creative filters...the soft filter especially, it makes pictures look soft and pretty, and you get 3 levels to choose from. Miniature and toy camera are fun too!

Amazing picture & video for under $1000

If you're looking for an excellent DSLR that shoots full HD video as well as high quality photos for under $1,000, then look no further than the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. This is my first DSLR and I can't believe it took me so long to buy one. When I first purchased this camera, I had the intention to use it primarily for video, but upon playing around with it the first few days of ownership, I began to use it just as much for photo as I did for video. It's so easy to use and it just feels comfortable in my hands. The photos come out great in nearly any setting, and it's especially great in low-light. The video is just as good, but if you're looking to pick up sound as well, good luck. The camera's built in microhphone doesn't meet the quality of the video, so having an external mic set up is highly recommended. All in all, I give this purchase two big thumbs up!

    Excellent Beginner DSLR

I bought this camera back in August of 2011, so I've been using it for 8 months. I wanted to wait long enough that I'd had proper time to learn and use the camera before writing a hasty review. Prior to buying this camera, I'd only used simple Canon point-and-shoots. I knew I was ready for a DSLR, but I couldn't decide between this camera and the comparable Nikon product. After reading what felt like hundreds of reviews, comparing photo quality from both cameras, and trying them out at the store, I chose the Canon. Main reasons being, I was familiar with Canon and I liked the way it fit in my hands better than the Nikon. Truthfully, I find them both to be amazing products and I think you'll be happy either way you choose. The first thing I did was buy the Canon T3i For Dummies book and read it cover to cover. I can't tell you how helpful that book has been in udnerstanding just what this camera is capable of. Your camera comes with a manual, but it's not nearly as user friendly and informational as the book. At the beginning, I shot solely in the automatic modes - Auto, Landscape, Portrait, etc. These settings produced beautiful photos, but I knew the camera could do so much better if I learned to use it to it's full capabilities. I branched out and started trying the settings with more creative control and worked myself up to shooting, almost always, in manual. The pictures that you can take in Manual, even just using the kit lens that comes with the body, are amazing! The colors are bright, the focus is sharp, and the artistic control you have over your photos is well worth the money you'll spend on this camera. I've recently ordered the Canon 55-250 telephoto zoom lens and the Canon 50mm 1.8/f prime lens and I'm looking forward to learning to use those lenses in conjunction with the camera. My advice: Take everything slow. Be slow to make a decision on the camera you want. And be patient as you're learning to use it. I don't see myself purchasing another camera for a LONG time.

I discover new features every time i use it or while i use it i discover new ways to take certain pictures. I love all of its features and was easy to learn how to use them all. This camera has no cons, its all pro.

    T3i Rocks

I am still learning this camera moving up from smaller point and shoot digital cameras. All of my pictures have been amazing. Just operating on auto is all I have needed to do, except sometimes disabling the flash for more fantastic photos. I can't wait to experiment around. You won't be sorry if you buy this camera. My son has the T2i and really, I don't see a big change except the wide screen display on the T3i can be moved out to the side and tilted for better opportunities for photographing. I really don't think I will use it though.

This camera is very easy to take photos with. The quality is very good. The ease of operation makes it a simple and less frustrating camera to use than most. This is the first SLR (well DSLR) that I have purchased in 20+ years. Much to my surprise, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. I purchased additional lenses and hope to get back into my much missed hobby. The quality of the camera mechanics seems to be as high as my old Canon AE 1 that I have had for over 20 years. This is a great investment for a novice to an intermediate or even an advanced photographer.

Great step up for capturing sports

Bought this camera as a step-up from the 2 Sony point-n -shoot, small digitals I have. I need to capture my kids at there sporting events, { volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball}, without all the blur I get on slower, smaller cameras. It was a little intimadating at first, but the staff at the Waterloo store showed me how easy it is to use. I find my self using the extra 55-250 lens,{ that I bought as a package}, the most. The supplied 18-55 is great for close shooting, and is a lot lighter to use than the larger lens. The settings are easy to understand, {sports, low light, scenic}, and the large display is easy to read. It will take me a little while to figure out all the fine adjustments of speeds and exposures, but thats just part of educating yourself to the advantages of a full sized camera. There's quite a few bottons on the body, {that I've yet to figure out all there functions}, but I haven't had any issues with bumping them inadvertantly. The camera fits my large hands well, and looks like it will serve me well for years to come.

I love this camera. If you're hesitant because you're worried about photo quality or ease of use for a beginner, please stop! This camera is easy to use and the manual helps a great deal for people who have never used a DSLR before. It also comes in Spanish! Also, the photo quality is gorgeous! I just upgraded from a Rebel XT to this T3i and I have to say, it's like entering a whole new world of color quality and smoothness. Thank you, Canon, for making such a wonderful product! The only bummer is the price. But, I will admit that the image of the number I paid that was burning through my brain has completely vanished because of how fantastic this baby is! I give it 4.5/5. The negative .5 is just because of price. BUT, if you have the money, go for it! This camera will make you smile! :)

Love the T3i Easy to use, has the flip out tilt screen. I bought a 100-400MM lens and it takes very crisp pictures together. It shoots video too which my older rebel doesn't. Good buy for the money.

I have been researching cameras for the past few weeks and I've only heard great things about the T3i. I've been looking for a camera that would be great for both candids and professional shoots for weddings and modeling shoots. The first night with this camera I couldn't put it down. The quality of the shots were absolutely breathtaking and not to mention the ease of use when it came to altering the filters and fine tuning the specs to get that perfect shot. With this camera I'm looking to build a great portfolio that will best display the beauty of this camera. Definitely would recommend this one to any person whether they be beginner or pro.

I finally upgraded from my point and shoot camera Lumix ZS7 to this Canon T3i DSLR camera. Wow, this Canon camera is amazing. It takes great pictures. I love the ISO pictures at night. They are super clear and bright. This is the main reason why I switched from my point and shoot camera. I can always count on my new Canon T3i to take beautiful pictures. I'm not a professional but just a photo enthusiast who loves taking great pictures. I took most of my pictures in the AI setting as I'm still used to point and shoot. I will need to try the manual mode to explore other options of taking photos for fun. If you're in a market for a nice new camera, this one is it. Good price too.

Way to go canon! - Get the 18-135MM lens kit...

This Camera is awesome for the money. It is more for the video than it is for the Photography professional. If you want to take pictures spend the $$ and get the 60D. The swing out screen is awesome and the video quality is great. The sound is less than pro but you can use a Zoom H4n to capture audio and sync up later. My recommendation when buying this camera is spend the extra $$ and get the 18-135mm lens instead of the 18-55mm. You will be much better off. Awesome piece of hardware. Way to Go Canon!
