Underwhelmed
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very surprised at the poor quality of this product. Doesn’t compare to a cell phone and defeats the purpose of having a dedicated camcorder. Only practical use is to zoom but the picture quality is very bad.

Bought to record Soccer Matches
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this so I could record my kids soccer matches, but the video quality was poor even when set in high quality mode. My iPhone records a much higher quality video. I returned the camera.

trash
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.recording church service during covid so that we can keep the message going to our members. Lost so much footage because this camera records in a format that is not compatible with a computer apparently. Tried a conversion software that I paid for online...the video is garbled and replays on top of itself. Dont waste your time. Keep looking for a camera that will already be set up to record in mp4.

Entry Level Recorder
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had high hopes for the quality of this camcorder. Has trouble in less than bright light. Also you can hear camera noise in the recording. Less than excited.

Not bad, but Not quite what I was hoping for
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It seems like everyone nowadays only records with their phone or tablets, which may be fine for most. Between orchestra and theatre performances, I do a lot of recording set on a tripod (and almost feel like an outcast using a real camcorder). While I do sometimes record in 4K on my phone (on the tripod), the sound quality isn't always as good. I've had a nice Sony HD camcorder that I've used for the past 10 years (and still works great), but was hoping to find something newer with better sound and video recording, a fresher battery (and didn’t use a Memory Stick). So, he comes the Canon VIXIA HF W10. It does have nice look to it. It does have some nice features, such as being waterproof (to 5m/16.4ft up to 1 hour), dust-proof, shockproof and freeze-proof (to -10º, but I wouldn't be outside for that). The flip-out LCD touchscreen monitor is a decent size, displays great. It is pressure-sensitive touchscreen, which makes it functional under water (capacitive doesn't work so well in the water). The on-screen menu looks nice and is easy to use. Outside, it has only two buttons: Record, and a rocker with Zoom in/Volume up and Zoom out/Volume down. Inside a sealed door on the back, there is a Mini-HDMI, micro USB (PC connection and charging) AV port and the SD card slot (for up to a 128GB SDXC card. It warns to not use a microSD with adaptor or it may cause malfunction). It has 8GB internal memory (which I do feel is quite small in today's world and my 10-year old one had 8GB internal as well). The 40x optical zoom works nice, just need to have it on a tripod or something stable when going full zoom in. It also gives you other zoom options, such as a 60(55)x Dynamic, 120x Digital and 200x Digital. I do like that the base 1x is zoomed out a little more, so you can be a little closer and get the full picture. So, I did some side-by-side recordings (in Intelligent Auto mode) with my older camcorder to compare, and this is where the Canon doesn't quite make it with me. Outside in the afternoon sun, the picture and color quality are fairly good with the Canon, but still slightly better on the older one. Overall, not quite as vivid on the Canon. In lower to mid lighting (inside with no lights, but some sunlight coming in through some windows), the Canon did record a little better, not quite as grainy when getting to darker areas, but the focus didn't seem as good. Also, I started noticing some backlighting washout/flaring, even when the brighter area isn't in the picture. Then, inside a room with no windows, just light fixture lighting, it wasn't too bad with the Canon, but still experienced the backlighting issue when getting closer to the light fixtures (which the older one really didn't have an issue with on either recording). Now, for the most disappointing part: sound quality (which is very important to me). I had my cello player play some while I recorded with both at the same time. I'm not sure if it has to do with the waterproofing, but the sound was just not as good. You couldn't really hear much bass to it (as you should for a cello). Overall, it wasn't very rich at all (like it was with the older one), and I was recording only about 6-7 feet away. I tried again with the Zoom Mic turned on but no improvement. So, looks like I'll be sticking with my older one for recording the performances. One thing I don't like with the menu us when you change certain menus settings, it takes you all the way out, which is a pain if you're trying to quickly make video quality changes in Manual mode. I also don't care for how it was designed for where you hold it, the way it juts out isn't quite comfortable to me. Also, it doesn't have a built-in lens cover with an open/close lever, just a clip in cap that will dangle while you're recording (or, like I did, the cord can be removed and just stick the cap in your pocket or case). Since we do like going to the beach every year, I will probably bring this one along for better recording out in the water (sometimes the phone in one of the waterproof pouches just don't work as good as I would hope). For recording under water, it does have a couple of white balance settings to choose from to get more natural color (look for the fish icons). This Canon will get some use, just not as much as I was hoping.

Decent Rugged Action Camera
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're in the market for camcorder that can take abuse, the Canon HF W10 should be on your list. In fact, I don't see much of a reason to have a dedicated camcorder nowadays with how capable smartphones and compact cameras are, but this Canon fills one major exception. It's rugged. You can take it 16 feet under water, drop it from 5 feet, and put it through tortuous environments without fear of it breaking on you. Sure a GoPro can do the same thing at 4k, but this has a live viewfinder so you can actually see what you're recording, plus it can zoom! The ergonomics are fine, pretty standard design for a handheld camcorder with a pop off lens cover that has a nice clip to latch onto the hand strap so it's not just dangling around as you're recording. Recording wise, it's a 1080p camera that takes good video in bright light, but is a bit noisy in lowlight. You can easily snap photos while you're recording, which is great, and the menu system is pretty simple to navigate through. There's a manual camera mode that more advanced users might love, but to me this camera is all about quick and easy convenience for nasty terrain. I already have a camera for fine photography and my phone does 4k pretty decently, but would I dare take them out on a boat or kayak? Or while swimming? Or heck, going underwater??? NO. That's what this camera is for... perfect for going fishing, swimming in the pool, shallow scuba diving, recording in the rain, a water gun fight, or even giving to your nephew / niece to play with (who you know will drop it). The only thing I don't like is exporting videos. I wish every camera recorded in mp4 to make transfers easy, but this camera compiles all the videos into a package that you then have to select the video and export it into the file format of your choosing. While it's kind of a standard process that I've gotten used to, it's so much more convenient when cameras record directly into mp4, or other widely accepted media platform so all the user would have to do is copy the files directly over. Not a deal breaker, and it's a common issue for camera manufacturers, but something I wish they would improve on. Overall, get this camera if you need something rugged that can zoom, go underwater, handle freezing temps, and can handle some drops. Excellent camera for the boat or beach!

Alot of Features that fit in your pocket
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Canon Vixia HF W10 has a lot of great features packed into a small device. The 40x optical zoom with image stabilization is a great feature especially since high school football season is starting. We Will be able to take it to the games, zoom in on the kids and since it is water proof we won't even have to worry about the weather. We have tested the Shockproof feature by accident, kids being kids, it didn't skip a beat. The LCD touch screen has great picture quality even in sunlight. One of the great things that I like about the camera is that I can give it to one of the kids and they can use it without any worries or being overly complicated.
