Love this movie on many levels. Personal redemption, action, lots of comedy and of course the amazing flerken Goose! Must admit I have probably watched it 10 times. Samuel Jackson is also a gem in this movie. Make sure to watch it through until the end of the credits.

...What can I say. Look my friends, I have been a video fiend for decades. I have had VHS, S-VHS, Laser Disc, DVD, Blu-Ray and now 4K. I have over a thousand films on all of the aforementioned formats and have enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) them all. I don't buy films unless I am CERTAIN I will view them a lot more than just "once or twice". Example? I have seen my absolute favorite film, "Kingdom of Heaven" well over 100 times. I have seen my second favorite film, "Quo Vadis" well over 100 times. I have seen all of the "Thin Man" series of films well over 100 times. Musicals such as "Oklahoma" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"? Well over 100 times. And the bestest part of it all? They are mine now. And I can watch them whenever I want to. "Captain Marvel" is now a part of my collection of films, which by the way, goes back to the 1920s. I do not buy poop. I buy that which makes me smile, laugh and sometimes..."think". Yup. I like to smile. I like to laugh. And movies are meant to do that. Don't believe me then I suggest you watch the excellent "Sullivan's Travels". Then you will know why. This film, "Captain Marvel" is a fine edition to my life. It's fun. It's silly. It's fun. Did I mention it's "FUN"? Well it is. I highly recommend it. Trust me. I know what I'm doin' when I'm reviewin'.

Captian Marvel takes it to the next level

It's hard for me to talk about a Marvel movie without going into a certain amount of detail, but I will say first that Captain Marvel is not just a great Marvel movie; it's also a great tale about personal empowerment that applies also to a broader spectrum of people than those in the movie alone. Many can relate to this story, about how one person strives to be better no matter what it takes. Carol Danvers, an Air Force test pilot, has been living as a member of the alien Kree culture for some time, with no real memory of her past. In 1995, that all changes as a mission against the shape-shifting Skrulls, the Kree's current adversaries, goes awry and Danvers is captured for vital information. When she escapes, she lands on Earth, and quickly makes the acquaintance of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury and his colleagues as she continues to fight for the truth behind her memory loss. A lot goes on here to fill in some of the blanks on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's backstory, especially concerning Fury, and ties in nicely with Avengers: Infinity War, bridging the gap to the next film. There's a lot here also on Danvers herself--not just about her memory loss and the events that precipitated it, but also her drive and motivation to do better than before, to exceed everyone's expectations of who she should be and what she should be doing. This part of the movie is what resonates so strongly and makes it worth seeing again and again, and the period songs and fashion also help.

    An Intelligently Feminist Anthem

Captain Marvel, coming on the heels of Avengers: Endgame, had high expectations to meet. This superhero, more than any since Thor, had to be a blockbuster in every sense of the word. She would be the secret to saving the universe. The movie delivered. But it went several steps further. We get plenty of action and see Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel demonstrate astounding abilities and power (she is, without doubt, Marvel's answer to Superman). But we also get a whole list of treats. Phil Coulson is back, this time as a rookie agent of SHIELD hanging out with Nick Fury. Fury himself is a suit, with both eyes, no less, a lowly agent on the beat, so to speak. Want to see an early iteration of a quinjet? It's here. Then there's deeper gifts the writers and director bring to the film. Though Danvers is all supered up from the beginning of the film, we get to see how she got there in a well-done series of relevant flashbacks that speak more to her spirit than to plot points. Like Captain America, she can take a beating. She often takes a beating down, but she always, always gets back up. She has confidence in herself even when so few others do. She's harassed and oppressed for entering a male dominated profession, but she excels nonetheless, worming her way around the glass ceiling until, finally, she smashes it to pieces. There's a strong feminist thread to this story, but unlike in Wonder Woman, it isn't revealed in silly speeches, sneers, and blatant male/female conflict. In Captain Marvel, the idea that women are just as good as men, just as capable as men, just as worthy as men is communicated as the personal spirit of Carol Danvers herself. It comes down to "I can do this. I may fall, but I get back up. I can do this. I have to, to prove myself, but only to myself." And, man, does she. By the end of this movie, knowing she will help the Avengers save the universe from Thanos, you have to wonder, what's she need those guys for?

While this isn’t a True 4K release as the movie was shot on digital, the upscale of the 1080p picture is nice. The sound enhancement is also great if you have a surround sound system in place. All in all, this is a fairly standard release that comes with a 4K disc, blu ray disc, and digital copy. If you are a fan of the film, this is a great edition to have. If you’re a Marvel fan and just want to have a copy for your collection, you’d probably be safe grabbing the regular blu ray if 4K isn’t a high priority for your personal collection.

    Great Movie

Captain Marvel is a great origin story of the most powerful hero we've met to-date in the Marvel universe. When you boil it down it's really about respect, finding oneself, love, friendship, and family. Carol Danvers' life before she received her powers is just as heroic as the one after. I like her, a lot, and love her relationships with her chosen family, her character, and her perfect chemistry buddy relationship with Nick Fury. Carol is a snarky U.S.A.F. pilot who doesn't take guff from anyone, but she will always try and do the right thing and protect those in need. She finds her true strength in this movie, and it's not the only powers she's granted. There are repugnant trolls out there who tried to trash the movie before it came out and decided to hate Brie Larson (who, btw, is terrific in the role), and they haven't give up even though the movie has made $1.2B and was awesome. These angry folks are upset it did well and all seem to broadly be offended by empowered, powerful women, which Captain Marvel is. Don't listen to the trolls, go watch and enjoy! I left the theater feeling uplifted and happy after watching this film with my daughter first, then my son, and I went back a third time just for me! Like Fury, I love Goose the cat (no spoilers!) so much!

    A Solid Film

I am not a film student, have no degree in the field, etc... so when I say a movie is a Solid Film, it means I liked it. There may've been holes in the plot, there may be faults in the blocking/cinematography/etc, and for all I know the structure could be lacking. The truth is, the things I didn't like were based solely on growing up with the comic books (AKA things like how the Skrulls were used... not going to give spoilers, but I'm not sure I like the precedent that sets for the future). Taking the movie on its own merits, it's a good one. Oh, and for those of you concerned... it does a very good job of having solid Female Characters without either making them stereotypes or pushing anyone's agenda, so for both sides get EITHER of those notions out of your head and just enjoy the movie. As for the Blu Ray itself... well, it's pretty standard for this day and age. Good additional content, good quality, good Digital Copy for those of us on the go. I think that, as well, is Solid. A worthwhile purchase if this is your genre.

    A story for our times...

Superhero origin stories can be dicey. Captain Marvel's origin is more complicated than most. And included in this movie is the origin of Fury, Nicholas J., head of S.H.I.E.L.D., and his Avenger Initiative. Just to add degree of difficulty, "Captain Marvel" is part of the set-up for "The Avengers: Endgame", due out in April 2019. "Captain Marvel" gets all that done in two hours, and manages to be quite entertaining along the way. The beginning of the movie finds an extra-terrestrial Kree warrior wrestling with her fragmented memories of an earlier life, while preparing for a difficult mission. Viewers will have to pay attention, as the story only really starts to make sense when she gets to Earth and meets Agent Fury. There's plenty of action and good CGI, especially a de-aged Nick Fury and Agent Coulson. The story arc eventually puts the viewer in an interesting place. Does Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel come off as a bit of a feminist? News flash: Any woman wanting to fly fighters in the USAF in the 1990's would almost have to have been, and it fits the story of how she becomes who she is by movie's end. Her interactions with Fury are some of the best bits of the movie. Be sure to stay through all the credits; there are a couple of imbedded Marvel Easter eggs. Well recommended to fans of the MCU.

Captain Marvel is, in this reviewer's opinion, nowhere near one of Marvel's best. It's a fun movie, but the character is not nearly as dynamic as she should be, and I think that can be traced back to what is so far the only casting misstep in the MCU yet: Brie Larson as the titular character. Everyone else does a good or great job, particularly Ben Mendelsohn (Talos) and Sam Jackson. Goose is a fun addition to the canon, and I'm hoping that he can somehow show up in future MCU films. That aside, the extras on this disc are fun, though there could be more. Marvel seems to take a less-is-more approach, and when it comes to behind-the-scenes stuff, that is certainly not the case. The only set I can remember where there was a deep dive into the development and production process on one of these films was the first Iron Man film. Also, the Steelbook case is nice.

Saw this when it was in the theaters. Story was good, VFX were excellent! Soundtrack was your typical 90's tracks that you've likely heard before, which in my opinion worked for this movie since the story takes place in the mid 90's. If you love Marvel then this is definitely on your "to see" list already and you don't need me to tell you to watch it. The steelbook is beautiful and worth the few extra dollars if you collect them. The 4K is superb (DIsney doesn't mess around when it comes to quality!). The effects used to de-age various characters (Fury, Coulson, etc.) is really, really good. I honestly couldn't tell that it was a visual effect! If you're looking for fun, action packed and a overall decent origin story then Captain Marvel is a must see.

Best of the most recent MCU

As a consumer of Marvel comics from the 70's to the early 80's, all the MCU is kinda new to me since pretty much all the storylines have been reworked. I kind of remember Carol Danvers being Ms Marvel to differentiate from the male Kree Captain Marvel, who was originally Capt Mar-vell since I think the Captain Marvel name belonged to Shazam who was a character from the Golden age of comics. The movie kinda paid homage to that by naming the Kree scientist played by Annette Benning Mar-vell. But rather than a movie made to cater to femnists like the all female Ghostbusters or Oceans 8, this was done pretty nicely to the point where the MC being female is not the whole point of the movie, but something that is more of an aside and not that important to the plot. Because of that this movie is very entertaining and one of the better recent releases from Marvel/Disney.

Ok,being a comic book geek,I am fully away that the original Captain Marvel character now published by DC,was first in Fawcett comics. during the 1960s,Marvel comics took the name over and created an all new character ,a Kree male soldier called Mar-Vell,eventually Carol Danvers inherited his powers and became Ms Marvel and then Captain Marvel. In this movie Marvel, for the first time, did not stick with the source material all the way. In this version of her origin, she doesn't remember her earthly origins and Mar-Vell is a woman (among many other changes ). Somehow it works and works well. Brie Larson is great in the title role and nice to see Samuel l. Jackson as Nick Fury. I'm sure those that are not aware of how much her origin was rewritten will love this movie. As one who did notice,I liked the movie as a whole too.
