Only if you love frustration
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The good thing about this device is that, sometimes, it works. But all too often, it doesn't. This thing is totally unreliable. No matter how often I reboot the thing, restart, re-initialize, re-this, re-that, it never works for a long time. Sometimes, it will stop working, and start working again for no apparent reason. Amazingly, despite having flown across the room, landing forcefully against a wall, the thing is still showing signs of life. Get a Roku.

Keep your old, non GTV Chromecast.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Keep your old Chromecast. Google TV is a terrible platform. Previously, you did not need to download the apps to your device, simply cast whatever app is on your phone onto the television. Now, it does not function properly without the apps pre-installed to the Chromecast itself. The remote functions only when it wants to. If you set it up to control your tv power and audio, it will work sometimes, it won't work sometimes. The interface is slow and laggy. The default screen is the generic home screen that looks like any other smart tv. You need to push the back button to turn on the original ambient mode. Some apps cast on this new device with no audio. Some apps don't cast at all. Literally everything that made Chromecast the best option has been un-done with the new iteration. Immediately returned the device and went back to my old non GTV Chromecast and still love it. I've always recommended Chromecast to friends over other smart TV options. I still feel this way about their old devices. Please bring back the non GTV option.

Remote sucks

My issue is the remote it very rarely works which really kills the entire experience. I have tried every single method to list it online to get the remote to work properly and it will not work it's garbage. I'm very disappointed.

Ok, but …..

Stutters.

It's not my internet, i have a high end WiFi6 router with gigabit fiber service. Plex also stutters. To make matters even more annoying the TV is 1080p so nothing we're streaming is 4K.

Here are some steps you can try out that may be helpful with the stuttering issue:
- If you're using a modem/router combo, we recommend removing Chromecast from your Wi-Fi 6 network, and try connecting it to your combo. This will help isolate if there might be a setting in your Wi-Fi 6 network that's causing the issue.
- Try resetting Chromecast with Google TV (4K). Keep in mind that resetting it will erase all data and that you may need to set it up again. Here's how:
a. With the Chromecast Voice Remote:
- In the upper right of your TV screen, select your profile and then Settings.
- Select System and then About and then Factory Reset.
b. From the Chromecast device:
- While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV and powered, press and hold the button on the back of the Chromecast. The LED should start to blink yellow.
- When the LED light turns solid white, release the button, and the Chromecast should then reset.

Beware. Not for families with kids

You can’t put a pin to lock any Channels. You can’t put a pin to prevent the download of any channels. It shows ads for shows That are not kid appropriate. You can’t set up kid accounts that only shoe appropriate material. Please fix this Google!

Does not connect to anything other than the remote

No matter what I do, I cannot pair this device with anything other than the stupid remote it comes with. I've done everything that has been suggested from google and youtube from power cycling the router, disabling AP isolation, resetting my network settings on my phone, enabling local network settings, to factory resetting the new chromecast several times and I always get the "something went wrong. A tv may be set up but we could not communicate with it from your 'device'" message. I've tried to connect on multiple devices (iphone, ipad, android phone). NOTHING WORKS. I've been at this for about 3 hours and just want to break this piece of junk.

Chromecast 4K

Do Not Buy If You Want 4K Streaming!

It does not have 4K streaming for Fox Sports or Amazon Prime (both of which the Amazon Fire Stick has). The Fire Stick 4K also has the remote, and has way more 4K content

Underpowered budget device
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really liked the device at first. It was fast and snappy, performed way better than the Fire Stick 4K. However, as months passed, the device started being laggy, slow to respond to the remote, apps crashing, YouTube crashing, the voice assistant lagging or taking 10+ seconds to even register the command, etc... Looking into the internet, you'll find many are experiencing this lag and blaming it on the underpowered CPU and RAM. The device had so much promise, but Google had to kill it by cutting corners. I generally am a Google-phile, with Pixel, speakers and displays all over my house, it's unfortunate the this device fails to live up to the promise of Google.

Terrible hardware even worse software
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have no idea how this is rated so high, every time they push an update it is riddled with bugs. Currently the audio doesn't work unless you restart the dongle. The remote needed to be replaced which they did but it is messed up again and now out of warranty. Also casting to this device doesn't work, I have to open Spotify in order to cast Spotify to the TV. I can't stress enough how awful this thing is. I'm always on the phone with Google support which is pretty awful too.

Typical Google bugs

From Dolby Atmos functionality disabling on various streaming services (Netflix Dolby Atmos no longer functioning as of this review) to having to set your display settings every time you turn the device on because it can't save the settings, there always seems to be something not working with this thing. Just save yourself some time and money and get a Fire TV 4K or Apple TV instead of this thing.

Good but not great

Google: will you brick this like Nexus Players?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Just wondering if Google is planning to brick this device, just like they did to tens of thousands of Nexus Player customers, when they decide to put something different or better on the market. This is a widely publicized issue throughout the Nexus Player forums, and realistically, Google should face a class action suit for their unlawful forced obsolescence of a perfectly good, functioning product. 3 of my five Nexus Players died on the same day, at the same time. Coincidence? I think not. At very least Google should be giving the new Chromecast TV devices to all Nexus Player owners affected by their bad faith, and unscrupulous business practices.

Ad supported product

I can arrow down to a row of more ads. Having to have to scroll past Google's "recommendations" to get to my content is awful.

Highly intrusive setup

The setup is also cumbersome, whether you go withe the Home app or without it - which you can do but no one seems to tell you on the internet, and it is well hidden inside the setup options. It also made me create a new gmail account even I already gave it one. I give 1 star b/o the intrusive questions, otherwise the device seems OK so far. Bought it for cash so I can't be a verified reviewer.

No "free" codes were emailed for streaming

Still not not receive the emails for FREE 3 months of Apple TV Plus , Youtube premium, and Fubo. Best Buy customer service called and emailed made aware 3 times now and still nothing done about it. And no, they were not accidentally deleted. Only I have access to PC and have been waiting for the Apple TV plus code to arrive. They say, "the "master coder" has to take care of this issue. Well the master coder better get moving because I read it happened to many people.

not a happy camper!!!!!

Caused problems with network settings--got interrupted wifi connection. The unit also had impact on the picture quality of my TV!!! Had to do a soft reset of my Samsung Q6 65in. TV--before it returned to normal. Would not recommend!!!

Video quality issues may be caused by a few factors other than your Chromecast with Google TV, and you may follow some steps below to isolate it further:
- Ensure your Chromecast has a strong Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.
- We recommend a high-speed internet connection of at least 20 Mbps.
- An High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port that supports both High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) 2.2 and 60 frames per second (60 FPS).
- A high speed HDMI cable when an Audio/Video Receiver (AVR) is part of the environment.
- Use only the power supply that was provided with your Chromecast.

Half Backed Product

I was only able to get 5.1 audio from HBOMax and over the last few days that has stopped working. The device constantly defaults to 1080p on my 4K OLED TV. I don't use use since it either fails to display 4k content or 5.1 audio or both.
