    Terrible hardware even worse software

    I have no idea how this is rated so high, every time they push an update it is riddled with bugs. Currently the audio doesn't work unless you restart the dongle. The remote needed to be replaced which they did but it is messed up again and now out of warranty. Also casting to this device doesn't work, I have to open Spotify in order to cast Spotify to the TV. I can't stress enough how awful this thing is. I'm always on the phone with Google support which is pretty awful too.

    Good but not great

    I bought this to compare with the firestick. They’re comparable but you can find the firestick on sale for as little as $25 whrn the best proce i found on these is $40

    Typical Google bugs

    Like most things from Google, this streaming device constantly runs into software bugs with every google update. From Dolby Atmos functionality disabling on various streaming services (Netflix Dolby Atmos no longer functioning as of this review) to having to set your display settings every time you turn the device on because it can't save the settings, there always seems to be something not working with this thing. Just save yourself some time and money and get a Fire TV 4K or Apple TV instead of this thing.

    Ad supported product

    Ads, ads, ads, ads, ads. Every time I turn my TV on, I'm greeted by a full screen ad. I can arrow down to a row of more ads. Having to have to scroll past Google's "recommendations" to get to my content is awful.

    Google: will you brick this like Nexus Players?

    Just wondering if Google is planning to brick this device, just like they did to tens of thousands of Nexus Player customers, when they decide to put something different or better on the market. This is a widely publicized issue throughout the Nexus Player forums, and realistically, Google should face a class action suit for their unlawful forced obsolescence of a perfectly good, functioning product. 3 of my five Nexus Players died on the same day, at the same time. Coincidence? I think not. At very least Google should be giving the new Chromecast TV devices to all Nexus Player owners affected by their bad faith, and unscrupulous business practices.

    Highly intrusive setup

    Asks for date of birth, gender, PRONOUN!!! what's next, my medical records? The setup is also cumbersome, whether you go withe the Home app or without it - which you can do but no one seems to tell you on the internet, and it is well hidden inside the setup options. It also made me create a new gmail account even I already gave it one. I give 1 star b/o the intrusive questions, otherwise the device seems OK so far. Bought it for cash so I can't be a verified reviewer.

    No "free" codes were emailed for streaming

    Been 3 1/2 weeks since purchase on December 4, 2021. Still not not receive the emails for FREE 3 months of Apple TV Plus , Youtube premium, and Fubo. Best Buy customer service called and emailed made aware 3 times now and still nothing done about it. And no, they were not accidentally deleted. Only I have access to PC and have been waiting for the Apple TV plus code to arrive. They say, "the "master coder" has to take care of this issue. Well the master coder better get moving because I read it happened to many people.

    not a happy camper!!!!!

    Video quality very low. I'm not sure how this unit messed up my TV but it did!!!!!! Caused problems with network settings--got interrupted wifi connection. The unit also had impact on the picture quality of my TV!!! Had to do a soft reset of my Samsung Q6 65in. TV--before it returned to normal. Would not recommend!!!

      - We recommend a high-speed internet connection of at least 20 Mbps.
      - An High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port that supports both High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) 2.2 and 60 frames per second (60 FPS).
      - A high speed HDMI cable when an Audio/Video Receiver (AVR) is part of the environment.

    Half Backed Product

    Very disappointed with product. It was released half baked. I was only able to get 5.1 audio from HBOMax and over the last few days that has stopped working. The device constantly defaults to 1080p on my 4K OLED TV. I don't use use since it either fails to display 4k content or 5.1 audio or both.

    started off great, but 2 weeks after using i this device it was causing my tv to do all kinds of strange things with the color and distorting the picture , i have unplugged it from my tv and i am planning on returning this destructive item

    Stopped working after 5 months.

    Worked well for 5 months. Then started dropping WIFI. Google support kept running me through troubleshooting that would go no where. Just at the 6 months part and they would not replace. Buying a Roku.

      Connectivity issues are mostly related to congestion in your network. If you’re willing to try, removing some of your connected devices may help free up some bandwidth space and allow you to get a stable connection on your Wi-Fi network. Chromecast typically requires a high speed Internet connection of at least 20 Mbps. You may also try resetting your Chromecast with Google TV and Voice Remote to see if it might be helpful. Here’s how:
      With the Chromecast Voice Remote
      - In the upper right of your TV screen, select your profile and then Settings.
      - Select System and then About and then Factory Reset.
      From the Chromecast device
      - While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV and powered, press and hold the button on the back of the Chromecast. The LED will start blinking yellow.
      - When the LED light turns solid white, release the button and the Chromecast will then reset.

      If the issue persists, we may need to take a closer look at the connectivity issue and figure out what may be causing it. This will enable us to understand it better and work on improving your experience.     Very limited version of any android tv. The quality of the remote sucks. Remote buttons mostly don't work when pressed once. Each time, need to press 5-6 times. If given away for free i would trash it.

      Other than setting up your receiver with the Chromecast, you may also adjust the sound format (surround sound and manual) settings to get surround sound. The steps below will help adjusting the sound format using your Voice Remote:

      - Go to Settings.
      - Select Display and Sound.
      - Select Advanced sound settings.
      - Select Format selection.
      - Then select between Automatic, Never, or Manual to choose formats from available formats.
      - Under the various sound settings range, toggle the buttons to either on or off. For example, Dolby Atmos in Dolby Digital Plus, AAC, Dolby Digital.

    I read reviews stating this had advantages over the Roku but I much prefer my Roku over this. The Roku remote is so much better designed and easier to use. Also closed captions can facilitated with Roku and not with the Google.
