Not Everyone's Portable SSD; depends on your Needs

The Crucial X10 Portable SSD is one of the smallest and most compact external solid-state drives I have reviewed, measuring just 0.3 by 2.6 by 2 inches (Height/Width/Depth). If you have the hardware to match, it can run at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds. The way I understand it, for professionals who need to store and quickly work with large files, this disk is a great option. However, for folks who need a drive to do complete backups of another disk, the QLC (Quad-Level Cell) technology that is used in the X10 shows its greatest weakness quite quickly: When the SLC cache is filled and converts to QLC writes, the write speed becomes underwhelming. The X10 comes with a 9-inch USB-C-to-USB-C cable and is preformatted in the exFAT file format. It works out of the box with Windows and Mac (as well as Android, iPad, PC, Linux, Xbox, and PlayStation). Testing the X10 External SSD: Copying 1TB of files and folders from one disk to the X10 Connecting the X10 to my HP OMEN motherboard's 10 GBps USB 3.1 port, I copied 1TB of (Hi-Res) FLAC files from a SATA SSD to the X10. Both drives were formatted with NTFS. With 520 MB/s, its sequential write speed was initially high and constant until after 13 minutes, when it fell considerably off the pace. After consulting with Micron Support (who are outstandingly kind, professional, and fast), I learned this slowdown was not caused by thermal throttling (after 13 minutes, the disk's temperature was 49 °C), but "... with large, sustained write operations, the performance decreases when the SLC cache is filled and it converts to QLC (Quad-Level Cell) writes. The X10 is a QLC drive and is not recommended for NAS (Network-Attached Storage) solutions or continuous writes. I needed to learn more about QLC (Quad-Level Cell) vs. TLC (Triple-Level Cell) disks. Now that I know the X10 is a QLC drive, what would a TLC drive do better? - QLC drives wear out faster when subjected to heavy workloads or frequent read/write operations. The X10 has a label on the box that states READ speeds up to 2100 MB/s. With those drives, READ speeds are sustained high (I tested this to be true), but write performance slows down significantly after the SLC cache is used up. QLC is suitable for read-heavy workloads . - TLC drives typically outperform QLC drives regarding continuous read/write operations, i.e., TLC is better for write-intensive tasks. In conclusion, the Crucial X10 Portable SSD is a "General-Purpose" SSD. It does extremely well in environments where, for example, video editing is being done, or just the normal day-to-day. It should not be used for NAS operations, or, as tested in my case, it should not be used as a backup disk to copy more than ~200 MB to the X10 continuously due to cache wear-out. Pros: - Lightweight, tiny, and compact - Super-fast continuous read speeds (providing you have a laptop or desktop that supports it) - You can string a loop to secure a strap on the corner of the drive that has a hole Cons: - Requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port to hit peak speeds of 2100 MB/s - Underwhelming sequential write speed - No indicator light for read/write operations Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Absolutely CRUCIAL for my gear bag!!!

I am on the go for both work and play and love to have my data with me whether it be a current project or just cherished memories in my gear bag. I love having multiple safe places with my data on it in the event of a catastrophic failure. Those were hurtful in the early days with disk drives. Now, I have all my data everywhere! Crucial makes that soooo easy, safe and fast! I have a few Crucial drives, But this one is for a home project to take all my mini DV home movies and port them onto the CrucialX10 for long-term backup and to access them on my PS5. First off – I love the form factor. The newest Crucial X10 that I am writing about is a cool blue color. I have a black one, but I like the color change options so I can immediately tell them apart. I also love that it is keyring ready, although they did not provide a ring or string to attach it to a ring. The keyring ready hole is nice to clip onto a bag so it’s always handy…It’s small but I don’t want to add anything else to my car keys so I clip it onto my gear bag. BUT YOU COULD! I love that it’s IP65. IP65 means it is dustproof and water resistant. Do not submerge! But a splash or rain should not hurt it! A coffee spill or beer explodes near it…not a problem! The biggest reason I love the Crucial X10…Flat-out breakneck speeds!!! I mean I can actually video edit on it. I can keep all my files on the X10 which keeps my computer hard drive clean, clutter-free, and fast. Gaming…same thing! Crucial states that it is 15 times faster than many traditional hard drives… Honestly, it feels way faster than 15 times. I mean I dumped 300GB of data like it was a Word doc onto the Crucial X10…Lighting fast!!! I also love the portability…. I dumped my Mini DV tapes onto the drive using a laptop and then just unplugged the USB C (which I love) and took it to my Imac for editing or my PS5 to watch them. Super easy! Overall, LOVE IT. I have other brands but for size, durability, and speed. I have not found anything better!

The Crucial X10 portable SSD is the newest edition in the X series. I’m already an owner of two Crucial SSDs, and my experience so far has been that they’re durable and reliable. This version of the X10 is blue, 2 TB and offers read/write speeds up to 2100 MB/s. My first transfer was from another Crucial SSD of around 330 GB. It finished the transfer in about 10 mins, meaning that it would take roughly 30 mins to transfer a terabyte. This transfer was completed on a 2022 Mac Studio and both SSDs were formatted to APFS. This SSD is also compatible with PC and Android. I love the design of Crucial SSDs, they just look so neat. Kinda reminds me of old video game cartridges, so I can see myself having a collection of these, perhaps in different colors. I’m a video editor so I need plenty of storage, so these come in handy, especially when they’re that small and dust/water resistant (IP65, which is an improvement from the previous model, which was IP55), and it can handle a drop up to 9 feet. I edited a video in Final Cut Pro with roughly 70 GB of 1080p footage, and the experience was very smooth, both in terms of editing and transferring footage between drives. The included cable is USB-C both directions and as usual, I recommend using that cable and not a longer, third-party cable unless strictly necessary. Also included is a one month subscription to Adobe Acrobat Pro, which I personally don’t need, since I already have the full subscription, but it might be a nice added bonus for you. Overall, a great SSD that’s fast, light and durable. It’s Crucial!

It works well and seems to be sturdy. I'm happy with it! Just remember to use the included cable, or a high-speed data USB cable or you won't get the performance you expect.
