Gets very slow with used as a backup of Windows 11

I bought two of these to backup four Windows 11 PCs system drives. For the first ten minutes or so, they ran very fast but then the data rate slowed to half the speed of a slow spinning hard drive. It worked for my purposes but I am disappointed with the time it took to backup my system drives.

    1. Performance: Probably the single most critical factor in assessing any drive, and of course SSD is its overall performance. This drive is blazing fast with read/write around 1,050 MB/second. This speed for an external drive is just insane. The drive utilizes USB 3.2 gen 2 which is rated up to 10Gb/second and it shows. Of course final performance numbers will depend on a lot of other system factors but this drive can keep up with whatever you’ve got in the case. I’m running a fairly well decked out i9 13900k system and this drive seems to be a good match for quickly and easily adding some mobile storage. This drive is ideal for really any application whether it's for gaming, media storage, or general data backup, you won’t be disappointed with the performance. 2. Storage Capacity: The 2TB capacity is quite sufficient for me and I would assume most users. If you’re gaming this should typically hold about 2 dozen top notch titles. Otherwise, LOTS of pictures, videos, files, etc. 2 TB goes a long way! 3. Build Quality and Durability: Build quality of this SSD drive is top notch. It is well-constructed and durable. Boasts excellent 6.5 feet drop proof. Also has excellent shock, vibration, and temperature resistance, which is especially important while you're using it on the go. 4. Portability: This thing is incredibly mobile when considering the physical size and weight of it. If you plan to use it as a portable drive, you'll love how compact, lightweight, and easy to carry this is. I was shocked how tiny this thing was when I opened it. Also important to note that this doesn’t require any additional power source, just powered by the USB C cable, no extra power adapter or cable needed – making it even more portable and easy to use. 5. Connectivity: Ensure the USB-C interface is compatible with your computer and know your interface. USB-C is becoming the standard, but it's still wise to confirm compatibility with your equipment and realize that you’ll need USB 3.2 gen 2 to get the most out of this drive. 6. Price: Compared to the price of other similar drives on the market, the Crucial X9 seems incredibly cheap when considering its speed, capacity, and portability. 7. Warranty: Three year warranty can’t be beat when it comes to technology products. 8. Brand Reputation: Crucial is a reputable brand in the SSD market. They have an excellent track record and known for great customer service. Overall phenomenal drive. Would definitely recommend to a friend and will probably be buying another one of the same for myself.

Sloooow write speed. I get it, it's only 1050 but man. It's waaaaay slower than that. I would be thrilled with that at this point. Maybe 225 - 250 megabytes per second.

The Crucial X9 external SSD is a very small format drive. It measures just under 2” x 2.5”and comes with a 9” long USB-C to USB-C cable. This is obviously meant to be used on a laptop because of the short cable supplied, however it works the same with any good quality USB-C to USB-A cable. The drive weighs 31 grams and the cable supplied weighs 13 grams. This would be very handy when used with a laptop in school or being carried all the time. The drive itself has a place for a lanyard but nothing on the USB cable. I have seen USB cables with lanyard attachments but I’m not sure if they would be compatible with the drive. The stated drive speeds were only slightly above what I was able to achieve while testing. I tested the drive on 4 Windows computers with all different specs, none of them match the testing computer Crucial used for testing. I have no doubt that the specs Crucial supplied are correct, since I saw a varying array of transfer speeds depending on what computer I was testing it with. I also tested it against a competitor’s external SSD and although it was very close to that drives speed it didn’t quite match it. The very small difference in transfer speeds would be made up in space and weight saved by the size of the Crucial drive. The drive comes with some Crucial branded software that you can download via links already on the drive. The drive can be password protected by your operating system, if you require hardware password protection you may wish to look at the Crucial PRO series of the drive. For me using password protection was not of any importance since I will be using it to move large files from one computer to another computer that is not on my network. Overall the only thing I would like to see included with the drive is a case of some kind and the addition of different USB cables, but being honest, cases and cable are a dime a dozen and trying to please everyone would just drive up the cost.

    Compact SSD with Top Speeds

Since you probably have more files, games, photos or videos, you've needed an easy way to store these in a compact and portable device. The solution would be an SSD device like the Crucial X9. This memory device comes in 3 sizes: 1, 2 or 4TBs. For most users, the 2TB version should be sufficient. Upon opening the box, the actual SSD is quite small--2" x 2-1/2" x 1/4". My previous device of several years ago was 4-1/2" x 3-1/4" x 1/2" that held the same amount of memory! Although the small size is commendable, especially for traveling purposes, it could easily be lost or misplaced. Inside the box is SSD itself as well as a 9" USB-C to USB-C cable. For laptops, the size would be enough, but for more users (especially desktops), a longer cable would have been more helpful. Of course, these can be easily purchased. The X9 comes with a scanner in which to load the Acronis backup software. When I loaded the X9 to my Mac the first time the link to the software was already installed. I connected the USB-C cable to my Mac and the SSD was ready to use without any additional steps. Previous hard drives were susceptible to damage if they were dropped. The X9 is shock, vibration and drop proof up to 7.5 feet. By purchasing this SSD, you could avoid monthly storage fees. The speed on this SSD was amazing. It even has a hole if you want to attach it to a lanyard to lower the chance of losing it! Buying the Crucial X9 is a no-brainer. You get lots of storage at an extremely reasonable price.

Fast External USB-C SSD storage from Crucial

The Crucial X9 2TB External USB-C SSD is so fast that it feels like a local (internal) SSD drive. 2TB of storage is a lot of space, for the average user, this is more than they'll ever use. The only difference from an internal drive is you have something dangling from your USB-C port, and you must make sure you 'eject' it (with software) each time before you unplug it. It is great for extending your internal storage, sharing files between computers, and backing up important files. When I copied 50GB of files (one folder) to it, it took about a minute to finish copying (that's somewhere around 800MB/s write speed). Reading from the SSD drive is even faster, with a claimed 1,050MB/s read speed (this seems accurate). I've been backing up to a NAS hard drive, but this is much faster and much more portable (files available off the local network if needed, at high speed). If you're used to external hard drives that fail after being dropped, this shouldn't have that problem as there are no moving parts to cause easy damage because it's not a hard drive- it's much more durable. As per the crucial brand, it's a brand I've known for a long time and trust. Many years ago (decades?) crucial even sponsored a college bowl game that my alma mater played at. I will share that I also own a Samsung T7 which gives similar performance, but an advantage of the Crucial X9 2TB External USB-C SSD is that it's much smaller (when you carry it with you, you'll appreciate that).

What can I say about this drive except wow. I've had my share of portable hard drives, going back to 3.5 drives inside of powered enclosures and this blows my mind in all the good ways. First off, this drive is nice and small. You could put this in your pants pocket and forget you have it. And just so you don't lose it, crucial included a spot for you to attach a lanyard to the drive without needing a carrying case. The drive uses a standard USB-C port to connect to any cable you have and the speed on this will likely be bottle necked by the port you have it attached to, not the drive itself. This thing completely saturated my 10g USB port on my desktop and I found it perfect for carrying around as a between devices storage medium. Speak of that, I was blown away that this always worked with my Android phone. Now your mileage may vary, but allowing the phone to format the drive as exFat allowed the Android device to read and write files from it as well as still being readable by my PC. My iPhone still didn't like to see it, but that wasn't unexpected. All in all, this drive rocks and I look forward to adding more to my collection.

You Won't Believe How Small This Drive Is

Upon opening the box, I was utterly amazed at the size of this usb-c drive. It was tiny. The dimensions of this drive were so small that the largest dimension on the drive was not quite the width of my smartphone. And the smallest size was only 2/3rds of the width of my smartphone. And that got me to thinking.... "Would this drive work on my smartphone as extra storage?" I hooked up the usb-c cable supplied to the usb-c port on my phone and after about 30 seconds, the phone displayed the folders that are provided on the drive at boot: - Alarms - Audiobooks - DCM - Documents - Download - Movies - Music - Notifications - Pictures - Podcasts - Recordings - Ringtones While I am perfectly able to create folders, it was nice to have this set up especially for phone use. The drive does come with some links to some software like Acronis and some support link icons. I tested the drive on a pc with windows 11 and usb-c connection and moved 365 gigs of recordings in about 8 minutes. This is actual performance and not some benchmark - speed was as much as 780 mbps and down to 440 mbs. This is perfectly acceptable for a backup drive or to add media to use with your phone on a trip. I also downloaded without any issue 6 HD quality video streams and saved them to the drive as they were downloading. I did not sense the drive was getting hot - I held the unit while these downloading streams were being saved to the drive. Cool to touch which is also surprising. I am very surprised by this drive considering how small the unit is in size. I will definitely be using this as a mobile media drive for my phone when traveling. This unit is perfect for such an application. I love the fact that I can plug this into a PC and then save whatever movies I might want and then to remove and to carry with me to plug into my phone.

Excellent product. If you are in the market for an external hard drive that is fast (not the fastest but more than adequate), quiet, efficient, with a very small footprint, this is a great buy. 2 TB is enough for most of our consumer's needs. This is my first Crucial review and I am happy to report that it is an excellent value and can go toe to toe with the other big names in this sector. Few quick notes: Why is the cable so short? It makes no sense. I tried this out on 3 of my laptops and my desktop as well. The operation was seamless every time. A previous reviewer had mentioned that the product worked only with the included cable but in my experience the computers could easily read the drive with my other cables as well. So that should not be a problem. The drive is fast and the transfer and read speeds were over 1000 MB/sec and a little under, respectively. You can encrypt the drive (if you know how to...BitLocker etc) and supposedly password protection is present but perhaps for Windows Pro users. I don't know, maybe it is just me, but how do you use the current version to enable the password protection? I don't think that feature is present as of now. For the home user who needs to store pictures and other files, this is a great buy. Highly recommended.

I have been using this drive with my PS5 as expandable storage to save my game library due to the large file sizes of games these days. This portable SSD is plug and play so no additional software is required to download onto the PS5 as the PS5 will immediately recognize an expandable storage device and give you the option to transfer over some files. I got several games with a total of 212.514 GB transfered over and it took about 20 minutes to complete. This would leave the data transfer at around 10.63 GB per minute or 177.17 MB per second. You can only launch PS4 games directly from an expandable storage device so that's unfortunate but transferring PS5 games back onto the internal SSD is a lot quicker than downloading the game again from the PlayStation Store. Moving WWE 2k23 from the Crucial X9 which is a 77.695 GB file took 11 minutes to complete. Overall as a game storage library, this ultra compact portable SSD gets the job done. 1 week after receiving: I wanted to use the Crucial X9 as an expandable SSD for work so I transferred my data back to PS5 and formatted the drive. Although the transfer speeds aren't ridiculously fast, it's a lot better than the internal storage on my Windows Surface tablet. I have been saving everything to this drive and have had zero complaints about launching any files or programs. The only complaint I would have is that the drive is very small and with one drop from 1.5 ft high something came loose inside of it. It still functions properly but now there is a rattle every time it's moved. Not a deal breaker but durability might come into question if accidentally dropped. I have since kept it on a lanyard.
