I have been using this drive with my PS5 as expandable storage to save my game library due to the large file sizes of games these days. This portable SSD is plug and play so no additional software is required to download onto the PS5 as the PS5 will immediately recognize an expandable storage device and give you the option to transfer over some files. I got several games with a total of 212.514 GB transfered over and it took about 20 minutes to complete. This would leave the data transfer at around 10.63 GB per minute or 177.17 MB per second. You can only launch PS4 games directly from an expandable storage device so that's unfortunate but transferring PS5 games back onto the internal SSD is a lot quicker than downloading the game again from the PlayStation Store. Moving WWE 2k23 from the Crucial X9 which is a 77.695 GB file took 11 minutes to complete. Overall as a game storage library, this ultra compact portable SSD gets the job done. 1 week after receiving: I wanted to use the Crucial X9 as an expandable SSD for work so I transferred my data back to PS5 and formatted the drive. Although the transfer speeds aren't ridiculously fast, it's a lot better than the internal storage on my Windows Surface tablet. I have been saving everything to this drive and have had zero complaints about launching any files or programs. The only complaint I would have is that the drive is very small and with one drop from 1.5 ft high something came loose inside of it. It still functions properly but now there is a rattle every time it's moved. Not a deal breaker but durability might come into question if accidentally dropped. I have since kept it on a lanyard.

Just came across this branded device in the store. Fell in love with the physical dimension of a 2 TB size ssd. It was a blinder to purchase at that time. I am using for a while now. Speed and usage is amazing and as expected.

This Crucial X9 is a very nice option for additional storage as it seems like our files are ever growing with photos, videos, games and documents. Routinely, it seems like we keep getting a warning that our cloud storage needs upgraded. Well, no longer with this as we’re now expanding our storage and backup capabilities with this 2TB SSD and saving the added fees of cloud storage. Crucial supplies a USB-C to USB-C cable for connectivity to multiple devices that include Macs, PCs, mobile phones, tablets and gaming consoles. There is also an adapter available from Crucial should you need to connect to a legacy USB-A port. The X9 is an upgrade for us as it is much smaller in size than our previous external storage which is great for portability. Even better is that we no longer have the concern of our traditional hard disk drive incurring a failure due to it having moving and spinning parts. The X9 is shock, vibration, extreme temperature and drop proof up to 6.5 feet. We’re appreciating the fast file transfers with read speeds up to 1,050MB/s. Even gamers will appreciate how fast this SSD is and the Crucial reputation for durability and quality will ensure one’s storage remains safe and accessible as they additionally stand behind the product with a 3-year warranty. This particular X9 2TB is a good value given its speed, quality and size, but there are additional pro model options and varying storage sizes should your need be somewhat different. Password protection can be utilized on the Crucial X9 via use of builit-in operating system tools such as Microsoft Bitlocker To Go or Apple’s Filevault. If the drive password is associated with your Windows or MacOS account these tools will also allow one to recover drive data should your password be lost.

Small pocket size and good value, if you do not need the Pro version with password protected capabilities this is the one.

I only have one complaint about this product, but it's a sizable one if you are expecting this to be the full package in regard to backing up your data. Your mileage may vary here, but when I attempted to use the included Acronis backup software it failed (entirely) due to a 'system file error'. I ended up using my already existing iDrive software to perform a backup instead, since the support website offered essentially 0 help for my issue. So while not technically Crucial's software, they did supply it on the drive... I have this unit hooked up to the front USB-C port (unit comes with a very short cable) of my admittedly aging Dell XPS gaming PC. The drive showed up in Windows as an available option - no formatting or anything required. Using iDrive it took roughly 24 hours to backup ~370GB of data. Obviously if you're looking to backup more, you better be in for the long haul. The unit is exceptionally small and even during that backup produced on minimal heat. It doesn't require power beyond what is provided via USB, making it by far the easiest of my external drive solutions to just move around to different PCs at will if I need to.

The Crucial X9 2TB USB-C external drive is kind of interesting to me (I'll explain in the review). The first issue I encountered with the Crucial X9 was a noticeable delay in Windows Explorer recognizing the drive upon connection. This was a rather unexpected hiccup, as I'm accustomed to the near-instantaneous recognition of most external drives. The delay, albeit not a deal-breaker, can be mildly frustrating, especially when you're in a hurry to access your files or perform a quick backup. It's worth noting that this delay appeared consistent across multiple Windows machines, suggesting it's more than just a one-off issue. Now with that being said maybe I have a complete system wide issue with Windows (My Linux box had the same issue). The interesting part of my experience with this drive is when I installed a couple of games to run from it and they play flawlessly with zero lag. Final thoughts As someone with a background in tech support, I emphasize the importance of data integrity and a seamless user experience. The Crucial X9, despite its impressive specifications, falls short in delivering the smooth experience one would expect from an external drive in this price range. If you're a Windows user with a strong focus on data management and quick access, you might want to explore alternative options until these issues are addressed.
