Bought this 11/8/2014 to replace a Bose LifeStyle v20 Home Theater system. The Def Tech system performs just as well as the Bose did without wires or speaker ceiling mounts. The flexible wireless subwoofer makes it easy to move around to find the best placement in the room. Blu-Ray DTS movies sound amazing! Music and cable network Dolby Digital stations sound fantastic! Very pleased with this system. I had to increase the height of my UHDTV to keep its IR exposed. Not an issue at all. The HDMI output to the TV is not ARC (audio return channel) capable and my UHDTV HDMI input is. Not an issue as the HDMI inputs into the sound bar decode DTS and Dolby Digital without having to use the UHDTV's decoder.

Excellent soundbar with dedicated, adjustable center channel for clear voice audio. This product package, when set-up correctly, greatly enhances the whole television and movie experience. Highly recommended for this purpose. If I were looking for a dual purpose tv/music solution I would probably go with the Studio W Micro version and add 2 additional speakers. However, that set-up and switching gets a little more tricky for someone like me with limited tech skills.

    Ying and Yang

There is no doubt that the outputs great sound for it's size. I spent a while looking at the Sonos to see what the hype was about and finally settled on the Definitive as the sound quality blew the Sonos away. The build quality is fantastic too. So why only 2 stars you may ask? 1. I have no issue with it not having Bluetooth. That limits me to a radius around the soundbar and the quality Bluetooth output is awful. 2. I have no issue with it not having ARC. Yes that means you will not get the highest quality streams out there but then a soundbar is not going to be able to deliver the sound quality that is required so what's the point in receiving a True-HD or MA stream. 3. Yes the volume control is a pain and you cannot get to low volumes, but that I can live with. My real issue is that the W Studio cannot be used in a 5.1 format. DT say that it has 5.1 built in ("Room filling 5.1 Channel Surround Sound") and you need to use a Studio Micro if you wish to add surround speakers for true 5.1 sound. Please tell me how they can honestly think that building 5 channels into the sound bar can cover rear surrounds! So I have to downgrade to the smaller Micro to get true 5.1? Surely it is should be the other way around. The Best Buy sales guy who was very knowledgable in general, also thought that the Studio could be used in a true 5.1 setup as I thought after I reading this website, so I therefore have to question Definitives marketing and sales techniques as well as the training of the people who sell their product. I love the sound and at the new discounted price of $899, I am going to keep it until I build out a true 5.1 system.

    Superb Sound, Simplistic Set Up

If you have been researching Soundbars over the last few years, you know that major manufacturers are diving into the Multi-Speaker product category. With that transition, better brands such as DT have made the move. Audiofiles will agree that no Soundbar will reproduce sounds like a stand alone 5.1 or greater system but this system does an excellent job at trying. The Spacial Array technology delivers a immersive sound experience and Dolby Digital and DTS decoders provide a lush surround sound experience. DT has leveraged their speaker engineering heritage to create a complete sound reproduction soundbar system that in my opinion owns that specific category space. Lows, Mids and Highs are reproduced quit elegantly with minimal distortion. And the ability to control both the center and bass levels allows for simple sound adjustment to fit any room design. With a quick downloand from Itunes or Google Play the Play-Fi App allows playback from any personal device music library or standard internet radio service like Pandora. Additionally the DT system is the 3 HDMI , 1 HDMI Input and 3HDMI outputs which is rare is this crowded field. Meaning your TV, Blue Ray, and Streaming Service can all seamlessly be integrated into the Soundbar and allows control to any DT multi-room speaker providing the ability to sync all your speakers together to create house filling sound. The price may seem a little steep, but you must consider what you're receiving. Right now, from a music reproduction perspective, DT is heads above the competition. And with their history and heritage I only expect that to gap to grow.

    Great sound but lacks features

Best sound bar I have heard. Music sounds crisp and the sub power is just right. Only reason I am giving a 4 star is because of the lack of features. No Bluetooth, no Arc, no USB 2.0 for 4K and an awful looking GUI. The app is weak and not so easy to connect to the wifi. If you are not using this bar for 4k and don't mind wifi only set up, this is the bar for you.

Sound was good, but very inconvenient setup

This sounded great, but we ended up returning. If you want to use an HDMI ARC cable, which is recommended for the best sound, this soundbar has to be the "hub" of everything which was incredibly inconvenient. That meant using the soundbar remote (which is pretty low quality for a nice system) to change the TV inputs between TV/AppleTV/etc. This also meant we were not able to put something on TV to watch and listen to music at the same time (which we do often with sports). It also would not work when we used the Smart TV features on our new LG (not a huge deal since we use Apple TV, but for such an expensive system that was surprising). The PlayFi app was also a struggle, not particularly user-friendly and would constantly cut out. We returned this and got the Bose setup and are SO much happier. The Bose has Bluetooth capability which is great for visitors and whenever you don't want to use the whole-home app. Very simple setup.

Powerful bass and strong mid-upper range

This sound bar and sub woofer are the best sound system combo I have ever purchased. I tried 5 different brands of soundbars and settled with this one because of the quality of the sound it produced. The sound might be a little too crisp for some buyers, but I prefer it like that. The mix between mid upper and lower ranges is clean. The bluetooth is a nice feature. I feel like this particular soundbar is best served in a larger room, but it works flawlessly in my smaller-than-usual living room.

Going from a stereo sound system to the Definitive Technology - W Studio Soundbar with 8" Wireless Subwoofer I was not too sure about this purchase. But I need to down size to a smaller space. I have to say is why didn't I down size a long time ago. Love the sound and the features this sound bar and subwoofer gives. I have already recommended this to multiple people.

I have been listing to our Studio W for a year before writing this review. Last fall we remodeled our living room and decided to downsize our audio system. My 20 year old Klipsch KG 5.5's , KV 3 center speaker and 2 year old Marantz AVR were replaced with a sound bar! Initially I was underwhelmed with its low end output and every time I turned it on I missed that huge bass sound. I don't even notice it now and appreciate how balanced the Def Tech really is at any volume level. One of our most used features is the ability to easily use the remote to raise the the center volume and decrease the bass output for some of those hard to understand TV programs. I could never get consistent results with the Def Tech iOS app until I deleted it and switched to the Play-Fi app. Nothing is perfect and one year later we would definitely buy this again

    Too Much Technology, Mediocre Sound.

I have had this sound bar now for about three years. I am neutral about this product, which is not what one should be. First of all, rather that connecting through Bluetooth, as with other devices; one has to download Definitive Technologies application for use with a cell phone or tablet. I find that I have to re-program my mobile devices to connect with the application. It would be much better if they just stuck with Bluetooth connectivity, rather than use this indirect approach. Also, the sound is not better than any of the other sounders out there. Finally, the remote control is not working, and I cannot find a way to buy just the remote control. Beware Does not support ARC

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this sound bar to pair with my new Samsung 9000 series smart TV. Definitive recommends connecting the sound bar using HDMI cable. After spending over an hour and trying it on two smart TVs without success, I contacted tech support and was told the W Studio does not support ARC (HDMI out). I find this unacceptable for a $1,200 sound bar. The point of buying a "smart TV" is for it to serve as the hub of your system. Not being able to use the full capability of my TV is frustrating. I read plenty of reviews and this was never mentioned. Had I known this, I would not have bought this unit. I own several other Definitive speaker products and have always found their products to be top shelf so I naturally assumed this product would be up to date technically.

    Not worth the $$

I did a ton of research before buying this soundbar and every review I read said this was the soundbar to buy. I talked to the best buy magnolia department and they backed up everything I read saying this was a great soundbar and nothing will touch it for the money. I get it home and set it up through optical and right away I thought there was something wrong. It doesn't get loud at all. I litteraly had it at full volume playing music and I'm like, is this it?? For a $1000, this is what I'm getting? I have a generic LG sound bar upstairs that I got for a few hundred dollars that sounds just as good. I've tried cable, YouTube streaming, their WiFi app and the bass barely hits. I turned the bass all the way up and I'm just shocked there isn't more... I tried contacting definitive a few times and only got one email stating to change it from music to movie mode which did nothing. My other emails to them went un answered.... If this sound bar costed $300 I would say go for it, but the for the amount of money you spend it is not worth it for the sound quality. Sound is very flat with too much treble and no bass. The volume control is poorly designed as well. Very disappointed. I should have returned it but got busy during the holidays and now it is too late. Look elsewhere...

I read the reviews and bought on sale for $499.98. Honestly I should have returned it. Have had and heard less expensive sound bars that were just as good if not better. I'm not an audio tech so i can't give you expert commentary, all I can tell you is I like a good sounding system and this was below my expectations. Have tried different hookups and still TV sound is terrible, Bass is pitiful for such a large speaker....I will say music played is not bad but for movies this is really lacking. That's all i can really say about it Other's can give you the tech jargon better than me so choose wisely grasshopper...

Sound is excellent! The app could be better, but here is the major complaint, if I have the app on my phone only, android, or just the wives phone only, IOS, no problem, but if we both have the app, the most an app like Pandora will play is one song before the phones fight for control. I just found this out, and will email Definitive to see if there is a solution tonight, but shame on you Play Fi,..... Signed, wishing for Blue Tooth every minute. Also, something people need to know, to use Spotify, you need to have the paid subscription.

This sound bar is average with a hefty price tag. It doesn't compare to any $700 sound bar let alone any 1300-1400 sound bars on the market. I purchased this thinking it would somewhat rival bose or sonos considering its price and brand. Absolutely not! The bass is not coming close to sonos and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as BOSE. I had the bose 300 already and i thought what the heck this unit just went on sale for half the price let me try it out. I hooked it up put on Avengers infinity war and disconnected it in 20 seconds. The soundbar had to be turned all the way up in order to get half of what bose offers. I also could barely hear the words over the action even after adjusting the center channel. Honestly I wouldn't spend over 300 dollars on this sound bar. Just get bose! There is NO other soundbar that will give you that home theater experience like it! Not even the sonos or sony. Trust me when I tell you don't trust the 5 star comments, I did and i wasted two trips and time to figure out that this sound bar is horrible. I'm not going to even complain about the old features missing bluetooth, hdmi arc,app issues etc. I was willing to deal with those things if it was at least decent but the sound is terrible! It arrived in my doorstep at 6:30 i was at best buy at 6:50 returning it. Do not waste your time.

This review is for the sound bar itself. The quality of sound is superb! However, after 3 years of below average usage, all of the 3 HDMI inputs failed. Completely unacceptable! Def Tech doesn't have in-house tech repair and they do not offer parts. You're told to either buy another new or refurbished sound bar or you're left to trying eBay for a used one or one for parts. The tech support supervisor at Def Tech says these sound bars last in good working order for 3 to 5 years. I wish I knew that going in before dropping 1K on the system.
