Overall this is a very good gaming laptop for the money. The screen is high quality and the laptop does what it does quickly. Areas for improvement that you can control are more RAM and more SSD space. What I can't stand about this laptop is no power light and the terrible support.

I purchased this laptop to supplement my AMD 3900X / 5700XT desktop.
So far I have upgraded its stock ram to 32GB, using a Kingston HyperX kit operating at DDR4-3200 CL20 (slightly better timings than the stock ram). It is also quite easy to add an additional M.2 storage drive, although I would probably stick with SATA or try to see if Dell can ship an additional SSD heatsink plate if using NVMe.
Regarding temperatures, the machine does get quite hot under load and is warm at idle. Using the "Gameshift" feature to boost fans to boost fans to max does help keep the palm rest comfortable. A hidden power plan option can also be used to change how the CPU boosts which can help manage temperatures if the game does not need the full 4.3ghz speed.
AMD has also provided a special graphics driver package at their website for this model which enables certain features like Freesync. I am not sure how often they will update this package but it may be a way to get game specific fixes quicker than through Dell support directly.

This computer struggles to keep up with games. The computer gets super hot, and sometimes forced shutdowns. For a gaming laptop, it is ill prepared to run games.

My gaming laptop. It can handle most things but it does chug along sometimes and the fan is VERY LOUD! Noise Cancelling headphones are mandatory and I even have it racked a few feet away from me on the other side of my monitors!

This gaming computer is amazing. I love the light up keyboard and the graphics. The size is good. It’s not too bulky. The storage capacity is great. Occasionally the frame to second drops, but that could be a power source issue on my end.

The Dell G5-15SE epitomizes the ugly duckling fable. It's a bit on the chunky side, with a chassis design that is a bit dated, but once you start using it --- Wow! Dell put all the right pieces together to come up with a blistering fast gaming computer at a bargain price.
As I said, the chassis is unexceptional, sturdy and solid. Under the hood, the AMD Ryzen R7-4800H offers a significant performance boost over the equivalent Intel I7. The AMD Radeon 5600M graphics card I would put in a class with the Nvidia 2060, for comparison. The display is bright, sharp, and runs up to 144Hz and the keyboard is a full size keyboard that I found to be quite adequate. The G5-15SE also comes with a 512GB internal SSD, which is more spacious than the 256GB SSD's usually found in this class of laptop. Important notes: the memory can be upgraded with standard dimms, and there is an additional m.2/pcie slot for a second internal drive, so the internal storage can be upgraded without having to duplicate and swap drives. The assortment of ports is generous, including a mini DisplayPort and an gigabit Ethernet port. The Killer Wifi is fast enough to keep up with any of the games I tried.
Performance was stellar! I will say that the AMD drivers were updated a couple of times during the week I've been had the laptop, and seemed to improve performance a bit each time while reducing the temperature (more on this later). With each update, I reran the benchmarks and watched the performance tick upwards. Good to know that there is still active development going on. While the unit is a bit on the heavy side, it seems to because of the battery capacity. The battery life in good old, go to work mode is seven to eight hours, running web apps and office, which is WAY above the usual gaming laptop standard of two or three hours.
For gaming, you probably want it plugged in, as the battery life drops dramatically to maybe a couple of hours. There is a game shift button that locks in high performance mode and turns the dual fans on high. At first, the unit got really hot after a while, actually making the keyboard uncomfortable. The later drivers seem to have tamed that without impacting performance somehow. Fortnite ran at around 80-85 frames per second, Doom Eternal ran at 40-45 FPS without stuttering. Cycling simulators (Zwift, Rouvy) using the DP port to a large external monitor were great, although the 15 inch built in screen was also fine with the G5 on a stand.
Additionally, I did some video rendering (transcoding some videos from a GoPro) which completed in nearly half the time my I7 desktop takes. Video operations were really fast and the bright, sharp screen made it easy to edit. I have a new video editing station!
The Dell G5-15SE is not without it's warts. The fans get pretty noisy in game mode, although it 'normal' mode they are very quiet. The power brick is a 240 watt unit that is huge and heavy by laptop standards. None of this should take away from the fact that Dell has put all the pieces in place for a high performance gaming laptop at a price a couple of hundred dollars less than any equivalent performer. You could spend more money for far less performance. For gamers or video enthusiasts, I highly recommend the Dell G5-15SE.

Ordered this for my son who is off to finish his Bachelor degree in computer programing at university. It needed to be powerful enough for work and play because play is what drives his career! This laptop had a great price and was a cinch for him to set up - took less than 5 minutes. We bought it as an "excellent" condition open box item, and everything seems fine. However, it came with a HUGE (4" x 9" x 1" thick) power adapter; it's almost half the size of the laptop! Dell's website sucks and doesn't want to tell me what the power adapter should be, and all I really know is this one is 240 watts. Good grief! I expected a little better from Best Buy, even for an open boxed item. That's the reason for a 4 star, although I guess you get what you pay for ($920). I'll have my son put it to the test and hopefully add to this review.

As expected you will be getting top notch performance. When I first
did my research, I knew it was going to be on the heavier side of things with a 5.51 lb weight. The laptop doesn't look too bad from the outside which other people seem to hate but you can tell that the build quality is poor. At this price range, it is a fine option for gamers on a budget and can get office work done well. When this laptop was first released, it had cooling issues but luckily it got better with the new BIOS updates. If you really need those high-specs, then go for it. If not, then go for a slightly more budget-friendly laptop.

This surpasses my ROG team blue and greens better life 5x! Bought it for my wife and she was on all day emailing and working from it, after 7 hours it still had 14% to go! It's speedy and respectable for gaming, working on it is very impressive. DESKTOP SPEED ON A BATTERY! Wifi speed is decent and it doesn't come with that much bloatware, it was clean and firing on all cylinders in less than 5 minutes. This was an upgrade from 2nd gen Ryzen laptop and it was worth it.

Works great! Most likely a popular item because it was not in stock when I went to the store to purchase. It had to be ordered and then shipped to me, which was delayed but as stated once received, is great!

It’s been only a month of use but I throughly enjoy the product. Not many laptops have the refresh rate at this price and it’s good for what I specifically use it for. It does well where it says it does.

I got this laptop in order to try the HP reverb G1 and G2 for VR. Absolutely every update that had to do with BIOS was required because overheating is an issue. I use 0CCT to watch temperatures and clock frequencies and perhaps there’s a better app but I haven’t discovered yet. I have a high end desktop and this laptop gives me 80% of that performance which means that the VR results are quite good.
Be sure to google overheating for this laptop so you understand from those who have solved it.I also ordered a laptop cooler to help. Be sure to have the fans at max before running any VR apps

After two weeks my two teenage boys have been gaming almost all day long with their Dell G5 laptops, I haven't heard any complaints. I made sure they updated every software available, specifically the bios and video card firmware - the result is stable thermal management and glitch-free system overall. The two brand new units were on sale at the time of the purchase which made the decision to buy these laptops easier. In the near future, the RAM and NVME drives would be upgraded to allow for maximum performance and usability.
