Terrific Computer but with some issues

Here's the Negatives first that dropped it down to two stars: 1) The heat. This laptop gets -hot- to the point that I have considered using my usb keyboard instead when I'm gaming because of the heat emanating from the laptop itself. This is my #1 complaint and concern for what the life-span of this computer will be. 2) I have had multiple issues with audio failures and then wifi failure on the computer. I have worked with geek squad tech support 5 times online as well as two in person check-ins only to now have my computer on its way to the Dell Service Center to get worked on for a failed wifi chip after having it for less than a month. Not promising. The Positives: So this needs to be said. Despite the negatives, I still REALLY like this computer and don't want to give up on it despite the issues that i have had. 1) The response time is incredible. 2) The game graphics are beautiful. 3) It is a powerhouse for video editing and multitasking. 4) It has great ability for expansion both with additional RAM as well as an additional hard-drive. 5) And, best of all, it feels like it delivers a much higher quality machine for a lower price than just about anything else I've seen on the market. Also, props to Geek Squad for being so good to work with as I have had issues with my computer. I really appreciate having your support!

The price to performance on this thing is pretty good. Knocking off 1 star for the poor battery. Only get about 3 hours of use (non gaming) without plugging in.

Just got this last week and WOW... I had an older 8370 with 32GB and this thing took it out back and beat the crap out of it... It's not just the CPU or GPU, it's also the 2GB/s SSD and 1080p ULTRA w 60fps in Call Of Duty... It should get close to 90fps in Doom Vulkan... Definitely the fastest laptop I've used in the last few years at work... About to upgrade the RAM to 16GB, but it does have dual channel 3200 so it's just so I can have more windows open when I game... This is my desktop replacement for awhile...

First, I will just say this laptop does not run games very well out of the box and I will be returning it for a different model. This laptop SHOULD be one of the best gaming laptops at this price point with the raw performace of its parts (Ryzen 7 4800 is the best processor in it's class by itself, and the Radeon 5600M alone is comparable, if a tiny but slower, to the 1660ti), the 144hz IPS screen is great and I like the looks of the chassis. However, due the mix to AMD's terrible drivers and Dell's terrible software on this particular model, the laptop is less than the sum of its parts, and just plain does not perform as it should. First, the CPU on this laptop regularly hits over 100°c while performing non-demanding tasks, and while gaming the aluminium chassis is literally too hot to touch with CPU temps over 100 and GPU temps around 90. I understand laptops run hotter than desktops on average, but in general it is not great to constantly run a CPU over 100°c, and there is no way to limit the temp or change how the drivers allocate performance between the CPU and GPU. AMD's "SmartSwitch" feature is currently terrible, sometimes underpowering the GPU to speed up the processor when you need GPU power and vice-versa, and as far as I can see there is no easy way to either disable it or tweak it for all game titles. The processor has an i-GPU in it in addition to the discrete GPU, and the comouter recognizes the i-GPU as the primary GPU while the discrete GPU (that you're paying for the gaming laptop for) is recognized as the secondary GPU. The laptop will try to run some games on the i-GPU only which severely limits the performance with NO WAY to change settings to run it throigh the discrete GPU. This is one of the first laptops to incorporate an all-AMD build (with this generation of parts) and to me it seems there are a lot of kinks that AMD needs to work out with the drivers. Dell's limited version of the Alienware software is also not great on this model. It seems they give you the Alienware software just as an advertisement for their more premier products, because with the pre-installed software I literally was not able to change anything about how the laptop ran (while I was trying to get very basic games to run properly from the discrete GPU) even though the features to do so show up in the software, nothing happens when you try to select certain changes. But I was able to change RGB settings on the keyboard, so there's that. If you've read this far, I would not recommend this laptop as it does not run many games well out of the box (or after any amount of tweaking as far as I can tell) and it runs way too hot. Get something with an Nvidia GPU and save yourself the hassle of fighting AMD's crappy drivers to try (and fail) to make it work as it should out of the box.

I was unhappy with the purchase experience - I ordered several hours before closing and went there 30 minutes before closing and was not able to pick it up. Also, when you buy open box, I expected that it comes with a power adapter or in a box. Instead it came in plastic and without power adapter. Given that these 240Watt power adapters retail for $140+tax (+ shipping and time to arrive) and I had to drive to the store twice to pick it up, getting it like that didn't seem like a deal - maybe next time I'll try something with delivery. Laptop itself is Ok. A bit bulky, noisy and hot when using the graphics.

Bootup and shut down times are excellent. The screen is not only 144hz but the colors on it are vivid. The keyboard with its textured keys feels good. The laptop itself is light and thin. The one area that needs improvement is cooling. Most modern games will not be playable on Ultra settings due to the amount of heat generated. You'll probably have to reduce settings to medium or high. You'll want to buy a laptop cooler with this purchase unless you don't game.

This was a b/d present for my Godson. He looooooves it! He loves how it looks (lights are awesome). He loves the connectivity. The speed is phenomenal. No “lag time” with the games he plays. There are so many things that he loves about this laptop and I’m happy that I was able to get such nice laptop w/o spending an arm and a leg! We purchased the “tech support” service program which means this laptop should bring years of use!

Solidly built laptop but the thermal solution simply doesn't cool well enough despite the fans constantly running at audible speed. Performance was OK, but CPU speed was constantly throttled (presumably due to the heat.) I do not recommend this laptop until Dell re-designs the cooling solution.

This laptop is a great value if all you intend to use it for is gaming. After some time spent updating and configuring the G5 SE is a bargain. The screen on this model is lackluster. Despite having good specs, I found the brightness to be significantly lower than some other 300 nit screens in use. The colors are also bland even with tweaking. If you intend to do anything with you laptop other than game look elsewhere. The G5 SE's build quality is even worse than alluded to on other review sites. Everything is plastic with similar coloration to faded mid 90's economy cars. I'm not squeamish when it comes to aesthetics but the grey sparkly case is truly something to behold. The keyboard matches poor aesthetics with poor performance. The G5 SE was genuinely a horrible typing experience, even by gaming laptop standards. Probably the worst thing about this laptop is how large the power supply is. Reviews on other sites allude to its size but their comparisons don't convey scale properly. The power brick is massive!

The included software with Dell products always seems a bit overbearing. Needing to disable or Uninstaller nearly 1gb of active memory consuming applications from the get go is a bit silly. This laptop has very good specs however the customizability of the software is a bit of a shame. I wish you could adjust the fan speeds or throttle the processor to reduce noise... after uninstalling the dell software the keyboard lost its back light, but id rather deal with that than sacrifice what little ram I have in the system

The package arrived when it was suppose too. Package was in decent shape, wasn't banged up or misshapen. When I plugged it in and it started. It was mere seconds. This thing flies. Haven't had a chance to play any games yet but so far I am impressed. I have always been an AMD guy and happy I waited to get this instead of the intel version.

Dell - G5 15.6" Gaming Laptop - 144Hz - AMD Ryzen 7 - 8GB Memory - AMD Radeon RX 5600M - 512GB Solid State Drive is a powerful gaming laptop at a price you can live with. The 512 GB Solid State Drive is super-fast. The system boots in seconds not minutes. The Ryzen 7 and RX 5600M are well suited for this machine. Kudos to Advanced Micro Devices. The keyboard had a nice feel. It is back lit, and you can control the colors with the Alienware Command Center. The display operating at 144Hz brings all the games to life. Brilliant color and performance. RAM 8GB is a little low for most of my games, but all played without a problem. There was no lagging. Overall The Dell G5 5505 performed almost as good as my $3,000.00 desktop. There was a slight heating problem that was corrected with a cooling pad. The laptop and power supply are a little bulky. This is not a problem as what is on the inside will make your games better. First thing out of the box is set up then run both the Microsoft windows update and the Dell Update. This system is also great with spreadsheets and video editing. This is an all-around better system. I would recommend this system to my family and friends.

This laptop has done a nice job for my son. We however, upgraded to a desktop gaming rig because he was having lag issues playing Madden on this machine. I really don't know what happened, as it used to run fine. The internet bandwidth is 200MBPS. The graphics card is great for younger kids with lighter graphics needs (like Minecraft and Fortnite).
