Customers are saying

Customers praise the G7 15.6" Gaming Laptop's performance, graphics capabilities, and build quality. Many appreciate its price point and the included solid-state drive, although some find the storage capacity limited. However, the laptop's weight and potential for elevated fan noise during use are frequently cited as drawbacks. Battery life is generally considered acceptable, though opinions vary.

Wonderful Laptop for Gaming and More!

This laptop is a joy to play modern games on. It also runs older games smoothly, boots up everything quickly thanks to having an SSD. My only qualm is that 256GB is not a lot of space to work with, when one wants a laptop completely dedicated to gaming. This is solved using an external device. Overall, I'd recommend this laptop.

Great performance/ cost ratio. This laptop played most of my games on steam at max settings without a problem. The best thing about this laptop is how easy upgrading is. All upgradable components are easily accessible and you can even add a 2nd hard drive for additional storage. Even though this was made for gaming, it handles everyday tasks extremely well due to the i7 processor. Perfect balance of performance. The blue lit keyboard is a plus as well as the feel of the keyboard. There are only two downsides, one being the screen. It is anti glare and doesn't get to bright. It is easy to see from any angles so while I prefer bright screens some will prefer anti glare over brightness. The other thing I wish was better was the size of the power brick. It is huge so picking a good laptop bag is important. It wasn't an issue for me since I use a backpack but still adds bulk. These two items are in no way deal breakers and this laptop should be someones first choice, especially if they are a casual gamer.

Excellent value - read if considering RAM upgrade!

I bought this and installed a 2Tb spinning HDD and swapped the RAM for 32 Gb 2666mhz DDR4. All in all, it is a tremendous computer now considering what I have in it (around $1,400). I easily run a Windows 10 Pro host OS and two guest VM's on separate monitors at native speeds. Easily. The 6 core i7 make allocating cores among 3 machines a simple matter. Also, in regard to the RAM upgrade, you have to be careful which RAM you buy. The motherboard BIOS is picky and will not accept XMP RAM, so use the memory selection tool at crucial.com to make sure you choose the right RAM (I tried three types before figuring this out). It'll save you a headache (and shipping). The device's service manual is online and explains the installation process. I haven't done much gaming on it, but my son and I easily run a minecraft server, client and API, while browsing the internet and listening to music, etc. The fans rarely spin up for anything. Also, I really like the internal cooling mechanisms. First, the two fans seem huge, one on either side of the board. Second, there's internal ducting that channels the air straight to the CPU and GPU. It's a great, simple design. At it's current specs, the laptop I described above will likely beat the benchmarks of just about anything else Best Buy sells, but can be purchased/upgraded for much less money. Compare for yourself.

-solid build -gtx 1060 desktop performance -heat generation and fan noise at expected levels (it is a 1060 in a laptop!) -battery life is average. 4-5 hours non gaming. -Screen is good. Wish it was brighter. Viewing angles are great. overall very impressed, using it for school and moderate gaming on the go. Played pubg on ultra and got around 60 frames. great performance. Given the price and the specs, this laptop is unbeatable. Check it out for sure.

Decent gaming laptop, but not very upgradable

This is a decent budget laptop if you are OK with the specs from the factory. The I7 processor is top of the line and the GeForce 1060 graphics, with 6 GBs of RAM, is more than sufficient for most gaming and graphics intensive activities. The 15.6 inch display looks good and the keyboard is easy to use. The overall plastic housing feels cheap and you will need to be gentle with the screen hinge. The looks however are very nice. Three USB, a card reader and HDMI ports provide plenty of connection options. The downside is that it only comes with 8 GB of RAM. IT is dual channel DDR4 2666 MHz, which at the top of available laptop RAM. However, good luck if you are wishing to upgrade to the supported 32 GB. DDR4 2666 is not that easy to find and either 3000 or 2400 speeds are more available. Both should work and the BIOS adjust to the highest speed allowed by either the laptop or the RAM type. Most modern games suggest at least 16 GBs of memory. To upgrade you will have to replace what comes installed because it is two 4GB SODIMMS. I tried to replace with two 8GB SODIMMS of 3000 and then again with 2300 MHz DDR4. The BIOS would not recognize either kind and the laptop would not boot. I contacted Dell Support and they advised they do not recommend any updates to this model laptop. The SSD harddrive is speedy, but you will be limited on how many programs you can install. The installed harddrive is M2 type, which looks like a stick of RAM. It is a faster drive than most standard SSD drives. There an enclosure and SATA connection for a standard 2.5 harddrive or SSD drive to add for additional storage. With this said, it is a very good performing laptop. My suggestion is to get this if your are OK with sticking with only 8GB of memory. Otherwise, get a model that has 16 GB, or greater of memory.

I've had this laptop for almost six months now. Very pleased with my purchase. Added a 2TB HDD and plan on upgrading the RAM to 16GB. The M.2 Solid State Drive is blazing fast and boots into windows fast than any computer I've ever owned. The only complaint I would have is that it does run warm. That is to be expected though in a gaming laptop. Excellent laptop that runs every game I've tried at acceptable fps.

This unit has a great screen and keyboard and good battery life. It's Intel Optane ready but doesn't come with Optane drive included. Fast I7 processor with a 2 gb discreet video card and 8 gb of ram upgradeable to 16 gb and a 256 gb SSD. The laptop is light enough to carry in a backpack, but it's not a "lightweight" model. It's a plus from a non-gaming standpoint to find a 15" class laptop with a separate numeric keypad! And being a Dell, support is always available! This is a fantastic value for the price!

    Great Stealth Gaming Laptop

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Does not look like a gaming laptop. The simple blue led and trim sets it apart from all the black and red gaming laptops with over the top supercar styling. Great deal for the money. 8th Gen i7-8650H CPU, very fast 256gb NVME drive, open 2.5 bay for additional storage. Only caveat is that the 8gb RAM is made up of two 4gb SODIMMs so if you want to upgrade to 16gb RAM, you need to buy two 8gb SODIMMs. Beware that not all 2666Mhz 8gb SODIMMs are compatible with i7-8650H (HyperX Impact is incompatible with i7-8650H/HQ/HK. Safer bet is 2400Mhz, you won't notice any real world difference in speed and they are cheaper.

Great Laptop (with a little TLC)

This is a fantastic laptop! I had the previous gen i5 (Inspiron 15-7577) and was very pleased with it, so I didn't have any issues choosing to upgrade to this model. It runs great, plays every game (flat and VR) that I've tried, and I really like the blue backlit keyboard and accents. I only have two minor issues with it, but they are very minor (one of them is negligible with a few quick tweaks): - This particular model doesn't include a fingerprint reader or Windows Hello camera, so the fastest way to log in is with a pin code (again, minor) - The temperatures for the i7-8750h are *very* high out of the box (and fans are *very* loud because of that) I was hitting 98c (max) in several games. This is easily remedied with ThrottleStop, though. I was able to undervolt it by -.184v, and I limited the turbo on all cores to 3.2GHz. Now I max out at about ~84c, even in VR and multiple flat games I've tested, and fans are a bit quieter.

    Nice Gaming Laptop

This is a really solid gaming laptop for the money. It can play any game in 1080p on ultra settings with no problem with very high FPS(120+). I play all the free games(Smite, black squad, ect.) hooked up to a monitor in 4k on high/ultra settings without a hiccup as well(70+ FPS). The SSD that it came with is ok, it is a m.2 sata. The 8 GB of RAM is split between two sticks, so thats not the best either. But it doesn't matter because the GPU is awesome, also the NIC is great you can game on wifi with no issues. This does come with USB tyce C thunderbolt 3. If you are looking to get a budget gaming laptop with tons of power buy this.

    It's about the same

I tried Best Buy's financing and only got approved for $1K, so I ended up with this Dell and not the Alienware that I would have wanted. The reviews seemed okay so I decided to go with it. I was expecting a huge step up but unfortunately, the GTX 1060 graphics card performed about the same as my GT 750 ti. I only play one game at the moment - Champions Online, the oldest RPG out there (or so they claim). Side by side, the GT1060 gave the same FPS of 60-70 at high setting; and 50-60 at mid setting. I use the function keys a lot when I play, but this laptop's keyboard layout is tricky. you could lock yourself out of skills by accident. It's counter-productive when dueling in games; and the dual-function keys have no light indicator, such as when unlocking the function keys or numerical keypad. Only caps lock had the small, almost unnoticeable indicator light. The fan too blows really loud that even my mom was complaining about it. The SSD is small, and I'm going to need to upgrade it soon especially after installing office 365. I feel like I rushed into this without a clear head.

      Miles,

We're sorry that your computer is not exactly what you were looking for. If you'd like to see if your fan can operate with less noise we'd recommend updating the BIOS on your computer:

An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

Fantastic Gaming laptop for the price

I actually owned an ASUS gaming laptop with the 1070 and loved it but I never used it since I used my MacBook pro. Sold it a while ago but anyways I decided to sell the MacBook and get a windows machine. I wasn't looking into a gaming laptop since I wanted something more thin and premium but at this price I got this after looking at the HP envy 360 which was priced similar to this which was $979. I paid $950 after taxes and the $100 discount so this isn't bad when you compare it to the ASUS I bought for $1,500 with the 1070 inside. The CPU is amazing fast and the gpu is pretty good for what I need it for. Only playing older games like KOTOR 1 and 2 and the Sims so its good for me. The only downside is the 256GB SSD but I do like the SSD speeds though even if it is SATA speeds. Might add a 1TB HDD or something down the line. In the end I would totally suggest this over other laptops in the price range like the Lenovo 520 which looks cool and thought about it but for $50 more I get the 1060 Max Q ( bit slower then the reg 1060 ) and a SSD. And a side note is I really hated Dell but after getting a Dell 2 in 1 I thought about getting this after all my hatered from past experience and so far I dont regret it.

Deceptive description - not typical of Dell

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was looking for a GTX1060 notebook that I can use for school and play games. I've specifically asked for a GTX1060. Both the BBY employee and also the BBY website calls out GTX1060. I've stated I don't want Max Q variant of the GTX1060. I was pointed to this notebook. Spec wise, it looked great. On the box, it shows GTX1060. I was happy. And, on the palm rest, it stated that the system is less than 24.95mm thin (oh so precise), sweet! In reality, I've received a Max Q variant, with boost clock speed of 1480Mhz, and my friends told me that I got the Max Q, not the GTX 1060 as advertised by BBY. Add insult to injury, my notebook seems to be much fatter than 24.95mm. Mine feels closer to 29-30mm than it is to 24.95mm. I'm pretty sure that Dell had ran the thickness claim with its legal. And, maybe, at some thin spots, you might be able to find a spot that is 24.95mm. Performance is decent for a Max Q variant of the GTX 1060, with a reduced boost clock speed. You probably won't be getting a full fat GTX 1060 performance. If you want full GTX 1060 performance, you probably should look else where. The performance does seem to be better than GTX 1050Ti. I would certainly pick this over similar priced GTX1050Ti any time (Omen). However, thinking if it's a GTX 1060 Max Q gpu, why is it so loud? The Inspiron 7577 seems to have good reviews, and supposed to run quiet. But, mine (G7) runs around 51-52 DB when playing games like Overwatch or PUBG. It feels like the fan is screaming to try to cool the system down. Not typical of a Max Q design. And, I've measured the notebook to be around 114 deg F around the top number keys, and around 120 around the function key. Design wise, it looks nice. Except for the two sharp corners on the front that digs into my forearms.

Just got this laptop yesterday to run the oculus rift setup, it works perfect so far. no complaints. ok just a small one. The keyboard back lighting doesn't stay on (sleeps after a few seconds)and there is no setting to change this. Spent about 30 minutes with dell online support trying to change this setting. Long story short cant change it to stay on. Other than that awesome!!
