First and foremost, this is one beautiful machine and certainly worthy of the XPS designation (Extreme Performance System). This 17 inch model has the size of most 15 inch laptops on the market but weighs in at a heavy 5.3 pounds (due to it being packed full of hardware and having the 4k touch screen). This is by no means a knock on this machine as it has the best of the best for any computer out there.
Setup of this Dell took all of a few minutes and transferring all my files, pictures and music took a little over an hour (175gb). The USB-C thunderbolt transfer was rather quick for this large of file transfer. A very nice extra came with this laptop – a USB-C dongle that can attach USB-A and HDMI – the laptop has neither natively which allows to keep the slim form factor of the chassis.
The screen (4k UHD touch) is simply outstanding – colors seem to pop off the screen and at times seem 3d like – especially the preinstalled background pic of the water flowing through granite rock faces. The touch screen is responsive and does not seem to collect fingerprints as much as my old laptop.
Battery life was a little less than I expected – approximately 8hours - even with the screen brightness turned down to 20%. Perhaps this is due to intense computing testing I put the machine though over the first 3 days. The last full day I used it as I normally would, and the battery was plenty sufficient to last all day.
Over the last 4 days I have tested this machine with gaming on PlayStation Now and while this is technically not a gaming laptop, it certainly handled its own with no lag or latency noticed. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 card was sufficient enough and the laptop remained nice and cool with the dual fans installed.
Testing this with my Photoshop Premier Pro account proved that this machine is capable of every form of video editing possible – not one hiccup which was simply a pleasure as my old laptop struggled at times.
Simple pleasures of this machine are numerous – the carbon fiber around the keyboard and trackpad has a soft feel to it and is not cold to touch. The speakers are superb for such a thin machine and the track pad is nicely responsive without too much sensitivity.
I have owned many premium laptops and ultrabooks in my life and this one is my absolute favorite. I was not too sure I was going to like a 17 inch form factor but it is only slightly larger than my previous 15.6 inch laptop. All in all, Dell has a winner here if you can manage the price. The old adage “you get what you pay for” certainly applies in this instance. Highly recommended!

The Dell XPS 17 9310 is a beast of a machine, more than ample as a desktop replacement for the office or home. Despite the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, it's not aimed at the gamer. Rather, with its 16x10 ratio (3810x2400) thin-bezel UDH+ display and 100% Adobe RGB gamut, it’s aimed at content creators.
The keyboard is wonderful. Nice soft touch and quiet. There is no separate number pad. Instead, the space on the side is used by speakers that are larger than if a number pad were included. It’s a trade-off for sure, but does deliver excellent sound.
The size of the touchpad is commensurate with the screen. Large and a blessing for content editing software. Folks have reported quality issues with Dell’s trackpads in the past, but I had no issues on my machine's touchpad.
There a couple of flaws that are worthy enough for me to knock off a half star.
• The screen comes uncalibrated and is heavily red shifted. Creators will pick up on this immediately, though, to be fair, most serious or professional creators will use their Spyder or other tool to calibrate anyway. But even office users are likely to notice it. You’ll want to at least use the Windows calibration tool to adjust the screen.
• Though the screen is is UDH+, to view any kind of HDR10 (such as Netflix UltraHD) you will need to keep the laptop plugged in. When watching such content on battery power, you will see banding in low light scenes.
The laptop has 4 USB-C ports and a full-size SD card reader. Dell includes one USB-A/HDMI dongle, but if you have a lot of USB-A devices, you’ll need a different adaptor. The Windows 10 license will allow you to upgrade to Windows 11 at no cost as it gets released over the next few months.
Overall I give this 4.5 stars and highly recommend putting this on your shortlist.

I was excited to review the new Dell XPS17 and I must say, Dell, didn’t disappoint. Even the packaging was premium. Inside the box, the XPS 17 is packaged in a second sleek, all-black, magnetic closing box. Giving an initial impression of luxury right out of the gate.
The sleek aluminum body feels sturdy, with tight, secure hinges. I actually found it a bit difficult to open the laptop sometimes because the body is so smooth but the hinges are tight. I didn’t consider it an issue though and in fact, was quite impressed with the build quality. The solidity of the chassis may partially explain the weight, which I found a bit heavy. The XPS 17 weighs in at 5.4 pounds, which is still definitely mobile but, you won’t forget you’re carrying it.
The gorgeous 17 in UHD+ display on this laptop is just extraordinary, at 3420 x2400 resolution with amazing 100% Adobe RGB color accuracy and 500 nits brightness. Combined with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, you’re in for a great gaming experience. Did I mention it’s a touch screen? Tap, slide and glide just like on a tablet if that’s your thing. Now you can play Candy Crush on your laptop. It’s responsive and smooth. It’s handy to highlight objects in photos or documents. When scrolling via touchscreen, I didn’t see any stutter. I’m not the biggest fan of touchscreens on laptops. When you have a beautiful screen like this, do you really want to put fingerprints and smudges all over it? To each his own, I guess, the touch screen is there if you need it.
The chiclet-style, backlit keyboard includes a fingerprint reader, which is to be expected on a premium laptop. The fingerprint reader can be finicky, but generally works as it should. The keyboard is comfortable and spacious. There is no number pad, with the extra space being used for the stereo speakers. (more on this later) The touchpad, however, is freaking huge. As, a person who is prone to misclicks, I just love this spacious touchpad. The deck is covered in carbon fiber.
This device is also eligible for upgrade to Windows 11 when it's available, which is a plus.
The XPS 17 doesn’t leave much to complain about, but here is my shortlist of negatives;
Speakers - Stereo woofer 2.5 W x 2 and stereo tweeter 1.5 W x 2 = 8 W total peak are better than average, but at this price, Dell could have done much better. There is room in there for better speakers, so no excuses on this.
Webcam - What happened here? This thing is awful. I mean, seriously, awful. Bad picture, appalling sound quality, this webcam is just not good at all. Now in a device at this price point that is supposed to be a desktop replacement and suitable for work, this is a big fail. God help the person who uses this webcam for a zoom meeting with the boss. I suggest you cover it and forget about it. Then go drop $20 on a simple webcam and move on. You’ll thank me later.
Ports - 4 Thunderbolt™ 3 with power delivery & DisplayPort / 1 Headset (headphone and microphone combo) port. That’s it. No legacy ports. No HDMI. No USB. Dell does include aUSB-C to USB-A/HDMI dongle, which is thoughtful, but can be easily lost. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but considering how many peripherals still use USB, it’s a bit disappointing.
Overall, I’m rating the XPS 17 at 4 stars. The good features are superb, but the negatives don’t leave room for that 5th star. If you have the deep pockets and want to treat yourself to a device that’s great for entertainment and powerful enough for serious video editing, you won’t be sorry.

Purchased this item online. Computer delivered was not as advertised. It was identified as Open Box Excellent. It was designated as Open Box Excellent. To be designated excellent the item must: Look brand new; Includes all original parts/accessories; Typically contains packaging. The computer which I recieved did not include the proper power supply unit for the computer. Took the entire package back to the Best Buy Springfield store, explained the situation but they were unable to provide me with the manufacturers included power supply. Was able to charge computer with my wife's Apple IPad charger but it took quite a while. I believe that I entered into the transaction with open eyes. However, the item I was provided failed to meet the specifications that Best Buy outlined. It appears that if I want to obtain the OEM Power Supply I will be forced to purchase it from DELL. Thanks for a horrific online purchase experience Best Buy. It has been no where near a positive experience.

Great laptop with a few gripes

I love my older smaller Dell XPS so I was super excited to get this bigger more capable model. The screen quality is amazing. I like how big it is and that there is hardly any screen bevel. It gives me a lot of real estate for multi tasking or for photo editing. I watched some movies on the laptop and they looked crisp and rich. The sound was really good for laptop speakers as well. I played some games that looked great. Using Adobe Photoshop was really easy.
I was also very impressed with the speed. The laptop boots fast. There were no issues playing games. Loading up Photoshop was fast and photo processing was fast. I'm really happy with the CPU and GPU performance. The cooling is impressive too. It will get hot with heavy use like other laptops but it doesn't get super hot in your lap. This makes it feel like more of a go anywhere laptop. To that point I love how slim, sturdy, and lightish it is. It helps out on portability that it's not too heavy to carry around even with a 17" display and a metal chassis. Also the battery life is better than any of my other laptops. I can easily work on what ever I want without fear of the laptop going dead.
With all the good things to be said there are a few things that bothered me enough to not give it that extra star. First off the mouse pad is too big and clunky. My hands end up resting on it to type and clicking is very intermittent. The right click is the worse. The pad down presses but more than half the time the click doesn't register. Left clicking isn't so bad since most of the time you can get away with just tapping anywhere. Next is the fact that it is a touch screen but unlike other XPS's I can't fold this in half to use the touch screen easier. I think it would of been great to be able to have it in my lap like a tablet for drawing and watching movies or flip the keyboard under so that I can just have a drawing pad and the laptop screen. Lastly with all the keyboard space due to the large display, I was disappointed that a number pad wasn't incorporated.

Its just fantastic! I cant even deduct a star for the dongle requirement.
This laptop chews through rendering, video editing, and photo grading. The gaming on this is surreal. The new Nvidia 3060 brings to life the latest and greatest games like COD and old games like GTAV take on a whole new detailed look and can be played at the highest settings. Its easily the baddest laptop I ever touched. Nothing comes close. I can only imagine what a N3070 does!
The build quality is nothing short of stellar. Aluminum and carbon fiber! The carbon fiber palm rest is so nice and adds to the weight reduction and rigidity of the construction of this laptop. I really appreciate the size of the charger. I've had several gaming laptops that had gigantic power bricks so being able to put the laptop and the power brick in the backpack with no concerns for space does not go unnoticed. The edge to edge bezel is exactly where we should be on bezels. Its 2021 time to loose the bezel. The touchscreen is very responsive and all my touches are registered correctly. The screen itself is completely absent of one of my pet peeves. I'm happy to report that there is no LED light leakage around the display. Everything about this laptop is premium and that's exactly what you expect when you jump up to Dell's XPS tier.

This Dell 17” XPS Windows Laptop is certainly not a lightweight, either literally or figuratively. It's solidly built and loaded with features. As tested, the specs included a 10th generation Intel I7 processor, a 17” UHD+ touchscreen, 16Gb of memory and a 1T Solid State Drive. It has an NVIDIA graphics card, a lighted keyboard with a fingerprint reader and a webcam with dual-array top-mounted microphones for better video and sound quality, making it ideal for those ever-more-frequent virtual meetings.
There are four Thunderbolt ports and a port for a headphone/microphone, as well as an SD card slot. There’s also an adapter included in the box that provides both USB-C to USB-A and USB-C to HDMI connections while only using one of the four Thunderbolt ports. That’s a nice, thoughtful touch.
Connections include Wi-Fi6 and Bluetooth 5. It also includes a one-year subscription to McAfee security software.
The exterior is aluminum, which adds to both the strength and the weight (4.65 to 5.53 pounds). As I said at the outset, this is no lightweight.
After unpacking and charging the new computer, Cortana walks you through the setup. You can choose either facial or fingerprint recognition at startup which enables you to logon faster. I chose facial recognition on this computer, but I do use fingerprint recognition on the startup key on other computers, since I find both methods work well for me. Choose whatever works best for you.
I was scheduled to do a video conference session shortly after setup, so I decided to put the XPS to work right away to see how it worked for the Zoom meeting. The first thing I noticed was the sharp video on the larger screen, which made viewing the session a real pleasure. The sound was clear, and the speaker volume allowed me to hear the conversations easily. The larger screen also helped make the presentation charts and slides easier to read. In fact, while I normally use an external monitor on several of my other computers, after using this XPS for a while, I didn’t feel the need to add one to this device because of the larger 17” screen size. That, of course, is a personal choice.
After that two-hour video session and another four hours of other work, I decided to recharge the battery before starting another session. Depending on the load you put on it via your settings choices, it appears that you can expect to get around six or more hours of work done from a single charge.
Because the large screen covers a lot of area, I did find the small size of the default Windows mouse tracking pointer hard to follow, so I increased its size in Settings. You probably will want to do the same.
The extra 17” width allows the keyboard to have larger keys, and that makes for a really nice typing experience. However, if you’re used to the keys on smaller devices, it may take a little while for you to get used to putting your fingers on the correct home keys on this larger keyboard. Nevertheless, it’s well worth any short learning curve involved, since most users will probably enjoy typing on the larger keytops like I do. And, with the larger overall size of the keyboard section of the computer, there’s plenty of space next to the larger touchpad to rest your hands and wrists.
While I have other smaller and lighter computers that I will probably take on the road, this loaded XPS will still serve me well, since I’ll be using it primarily as a desktop that I can move around easily like a laptop. This XPS 17 Laptop has all the bells and whistles. It’s destined to be another winner from Dell.

For the money this is an outstanding laptop in everyway and in fact overtakes my Macbook Pro and as well over 50% of the desktops out there that I've owned.
Solid construction ensures the feel that you're holding a substantial device. For its overall size the amount of actual screen is tremendous. All the speed and power you could possibly want in a laptop for at least 90% of us. Great sound for a thin device, and unbelievably sharp picture with deep colors. And not too heavy (my guess would be about 4 or 5 pounds). And Dell was sure thinking when it enabled plugging in the charger on either side.
My only complaints were the plastic bottom, and a long start up / update time period when first running it.
A little tip: the on button is a unmarked upper right key that is also the fingerprint reader.
