Top budget performer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I took a chance on this unit when it went on clearance, and man am I happy I took the chance! This thing is just downright awesome as a home theater receiver! It has a ton of hdmi 2.0 connections and supports a bunch of the latest audio codecs like atmos. Setup is fairly painless and it has plenty of power to push a 5.1.2 atmos setup, which sounds incredible in case you are wondering. The atmos does take some trial and error as far as angle, placement if you are using up firing speakers, and you need to increase the speaker level for the atmos speakers quite a bit, but once you get it dialed in, it will put a smile on your face! I watched John Wick and it sounded like rain was coming down from the ceiling!

Why did I wait so long to upgrade?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Background: After doing ** LOTS OF RESEARCH ** on Denon receivers, I finally decided on this model, to replace my 20 year-old Denon AVR-3200 receiver, for these reasons: * It was the TOP RECOMMENDED UNIT from a number of on-line A/V review sites * The "electrical specifications" were close-enough to my old receiver * The PRICE WAS RIGHT (on "Clearance" sale) * It was IN STOCK (i.e., LAST ONE on the shelf) at the store where I purchased it Essentially, I wanted a modern A/V receiver as a "central switch" for HDMI-equipped components (DirecTV HD DVR, Samsung 4K Blu-Ray, PS4) and I wanted Just One Cable to feed a 55" Sony Bravia 4K screen. My old Denon didn't have HDMI capability (I bought it when "S-Video" Was King!), but it had Dolby Digital bitstream inputs, which used the Sony TV as the Audio Source. Nitty Gritty: The amp power rating of my old Denon was 85 WPC, into 8 ohms. The AVRS730H is rated for 75 WPC, which is a mere -0.5 dB LESS in per-channel power. For my needs, this is inconsequential! The 6 ea. 4K-capable HDMI inputs (5 rear, 1 front) are More Than Enough for my needs, as are the two "Rear Surround" outputs that, if I ever want to, can use for a "remote" listening area. Installation: This unit is, in my estimation, 25% physically SMALLER and definitely LIGHTER than the old Denon receiver. The speaker and HDMI inputs are VERY WELL IDENTIFIED, so If I need to "change" or add wiring, it won't be difficult to do. I was VERY THANKFUL for the supplied CABLE LABEL SHEET (all labels "color-coded" to match the intended connections!) and I applied them to those cables that didn't already have readable labels. After connecting all my cables per the "Quick Setup Guide", I proceeded to the actual Setup steps. Setup: I applied power to the receiver and, after a few seconds for the receiver and Sony to "link up, etc.", I was greeted with the "Welcome, let's do the automatic setup!" screens. NOTE: to all those who complained about the "look" of the Menus - GET OVER IT! so what if the graphics "look 80's", THEY WERE VERY LEGIBLE, "no nonsense" in the presentation, and CLEAR IN THEIR INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT! The Automated Setup took less than FIFTEEN (15) MINUTES to perform (even with stepping through the "here's where you connect the wires" sections - I could've skipped them, but I wanted to see what they were about). The Very Thorough Audyssey "calibration" system discovered the following "errors" in my installation: * The CENTER speaker was MISWIRED (reversed "phase") * My powered subwoofer WAS NOT POWERED (an oversight on my part!) After making the necessary corrections, the setup finished and informed my "You're Ready To Go!". Operation: it's been a long time since I got "goose bumps" from the output of a receiver! the audio from ALL channels is CRYSTAL CLEAR and "spaciously full"! My subwoofer has never sounded so good (even on the old Denon) and the "audio corrections" from the Audyssey setup has my speakers reproducing things that I Never Knew Were There. Like the "Summary" statement, WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO UPGRADE? Summary: Other than not having S-video or Component video inputs/outputs or Line Level "Preamp Output" RCA jacks, this receiver has everything I realistically need to enjoy my A/V material. The lack of these items DOES NOT rate a "demerit" - they're just "wishful nits" based on what I've been used to. I'm looking forward to investigating the HEOS functionality as well as eventually "tapping into" Internet audio/video via the receiver's Network Connectivity capability. Until then, I'm Gonna Have Fun enjoying the "new stuff" I'll hear thanks to the many Digital Bitstream Decoders this receiver can handle.

wireless not as expected
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.stereo is overall not bad. The menu is very cheesy, I was expecting a much more modern user interface. This system is setup for phone control and pay apps and is almost featureless without them. Plus it does not even have youtube and does not accept a cast from my android phone when on youtube. the HEOS app is not very user friendly and when it wants to update you can not use your system until updates are complete. WIFI and Bluetooth feature seems to be set to have HEOS speakers and is to brand specific. WIFI and Bluetooth are universal so I would have expected to have the same result from this receiver as a wireless speaker or any other WIFI or Bluetooth enabled device. I should have purchased a regular receiver and bought a cheep WIFI interface instead of paying extra for a sub standard brand specific wireless receiver.

Great features but it doesn’t last!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this reciver less than a year ago. I set it up on my wireless internet. Loved the sound liked using the app to control it. But today I got the blinking red light of death! It means something has gone wrong with the reciver internally and it won’t turn on. So less than a year and it’s dead. Don’t buy this. I’ve had surround sound recivers for 25 years and none of them have broken after 9 months. It’s not worth it.
