This Denon is extremely hard to adjust the sound levels. Instead of using a system such as 1 - 10, low to high, it has to be gauged in feet. (!) I've had Geek Squad out twice to help adjust it. Still, the sound level is different from TV to BluRay, to apps on the TV such as Netflix. I would not recommend it.

Yes, a TV is required to set this unit up. However, you can press the back button on your remote to exit the setup assistant to begin using the receiver without doing a speaker calibration.
