This is my first receiver and I must say, this thing works great for all my speakers. It also comes with eARC which is essential! The added 4K 120hz port is a nice addition too.

    Too finicky

When it’s working it’s great. But it’s very finicky when switching sources. If I play music via Bluetooth and then try to switch back to my Xbox one it will often not detect a source. I’m currently in a blackout period and cannot get it back to working. I’m now having to invest in a $700+ balun setup to see if that helps to strengthen the video signal to my projector. When it was working it was great for movies and gaming. Too bad it’s not reliable. I would not buy this again.

    • Brand response from Denon Team
      Posted .

We're very sorry for the poor experience. That could be a data transfer issue with the cabling and trying a different cable or balun is one way to troubleshoot that. It could also be an EDID related negotiation issue between the projo, AVR and source. To test that, use a different make/model display with a short (6, 12 foot) HDMI cable. See if you run into the same issues with the test monitor and cable. denon

Great interface & features in an unusable product

I'd read reviews about this receiver as well as some other Denons "running hot." I dismissed them, believing people must have them in too-tight spaces and thinking there is no way a company would continue pumping out products with this issue. I'd read reviews about people having to repeatedly switch inputs back and forth in order to get the one they wanted to "stick" and not lose connection. I figured those reviews were anomalies. I should have paid attention and gone with the Yamaha to begin with. My new Denon receiver - sitting alone, on top of an entertainment center with lots of free space around it - ran so hot on several occasions that we hunted through the house trying to find the source of the burning plastic smell. This wasn't something that happened only initially. It happened twice in a week's period of time and the smell was one that made you believe if you didn't shut the thing down you'd soon be dealing with an electrical fire. We also experienced the input problem. Our main use is a Fire Stick going into the receiver, then out to the TV via HDMI. We kept losing the connection, and the only way to get it back was to switch to another input, then back. Sometimes it would happen 3-4 times over the course of five minutes before it would "stick." The morning I had to do this 10-15 times over 10 minutes is the morning I purchased the Yamaha and returned this. Loved the receiver otherwise, but these issues made it unusable and potentially unsafe.

Pleased overall so far. Does everything I wanted. Don't have an 8K TV yet, but it's set up to handle one. That was the big selling point. Will be shopping for the 8K TV on Black Friday, or whatever we have this year.

I preferred the SONY for my home system. I could never tweak this one to my liking. No maybe I just didn’t take the time to figure out how to get into all the submenus but it was much easier to do that w/ the SONY 1080.

Has every feature a average joe would need. However it does cut in and out every once and a while. And to get the 120 FPS you need a new connector which is a free item from the manufacturer.

I was looking for a receiver that would allow me to use the series X to its full potential. So far this receiver has worked great. It sounds great but also allows 4k 120Hz passthrough.

Very impressed. Really like the speaker set up mode. Can be a little difficult to navigate with all the options. Was disappointed that the unit did not come with a manual.
